Erosion Characteristics And Horizontal Variability For Small Erosion Depths In The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, California, Usa, David H. Schoellhamer, Andrew J. Manning, Paul A. Work
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Erodibility of cohesive sediment in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta) was investigated with an erosion microcosm. Erosion depths in the Delta and in the microcosm were estimated to be about one floc diameter over a range of shear stresses and times comparable to half of a typical tidal cycle. Using the conventional assumption of horizontally homogeneous bed sediment, data from 27 of 34 microcosm experiments indicate that the erosion rate coefficient increased as eroded mass increased, contrary to theory. We believe that small erosion depths, erosion rate coefficient deviation from theory, and visual observation of horizontally varying biota and …

Eurasian Ice-Sheet Dynamics And Sensitivity To Subglacial Hydrology, E Gudlaugsson, A Humbert, K Andreassen, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Ice-stream dynamics are strongly controlled by processes taking place at the ice/bed interface where subglacial water both lubricates the base and saturates any existing, underlying sediment. Large parts of the former Eurasian ice sheet were underlain by thick sequences of soft, marine sediments and many areas are imprinted with geomorphological features indicative of fast flow and wet basal conditions. Here, we study the effect of subglacial water on past Eurasian ice-sheet dynamics by incorporating a thin-film model of basal water flow into the ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS and use it to better represent flow in temperate areas. The adjunction of subglacial …

Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Actives Onto Microporous Functionalised Calcium Carbonate (Fcc), Charlotte L. Levy, G. Peter Matthews, Giuliano M. Laudone, Samuel Beckett, Andrew Turner, Joachim Schoelkopf, Patrick A.C. Gane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Microporous ‘functionalised’ calcium carbonate (FCC) has potential for use as a carrier for the controlled release of ‘actives’, by permeation and diffusion. We have investigated the nature of the FCC surface and the mechanism of adsorption of two typical actives, namely the anti-inflammatory drug aspirin and the flavour compound vanillin, from chloroform and aqueous ethanolic solutions. There is indirect evidence from the quantitative perturbation of Tóth isotherms that their adsorption is hindered by a stagnant diffusion layer of water trapped in the micro-porosity of the FCC. To complement previous studies of the surface of FCC, it was also tested with …

In Defence Of Intrinsic Human Rights: Edmund Burke’S Controversial Prosecution Of Warren Hastings, Governor-General Of Bengal, Chris Monaghan
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
For the first time, this article examines the impeachment trial of Warren Hastings from a human rights perspective. Even now, the seven year impeachment trial retains a degree of controversy, particularly as to its merits, and to the motivation of Edmund Burke, the man responsible for holding Hastings to account. The trial resulted in the clash between the reality of Britain's colonial expansion for many contemporaries and a defence of the intrinsic human rights of the Company's Indian subjects. If for many, it is debatable as to how successful Burke was in raising awareness of 'human rights' and whether the …
From Oppel To Callomon (And Beyond): Building A High-Resolution Ammonite-Based Biochronology For The Jurassic System, Kn Page
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
By 1849, Alcide d'Orbigny had proposed a very modern looking global subdivision of a Jurassique ‘System’, into a sequence of 10 étages. D'Orbigny's stages were based on a basic biostratigraphical framework, but there were still a number of issues with its actual demonstrable applicability internationally. In 1856, Albert Oppel took d'Orbigny's framework and, as stated by W.J.Arkell in 1933, ‘breath[ed] new life into it…placing the whole science of stratigraphical geology on a new footing’. Oppel recognized eight ‘Etagen’, divided into a sequence of ‘zones’ which he considered to be time-related to correlation units of theoretically universal application – a very …

Undiscovered Country: Towards A History Of The Criminal 'Underworld', Heather Shore
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
The concept of the underworld is a central feature in popular histories of crime and criminal behaviour but one that has tended to be dismissed by academic historians as somewhat nebulous and indefinable. This article seeks to bridge this gap by suggesting that the construction of a chronological history or model of the underworld can further understandings of societal attitudes towards crime and criminality. Drawing on case studies and snapshots of deviant cultures and behaviours from the eighteenth century to the 1960s the discussion highlights the role of the underworld and its relationship with social panics and social network theories …

Blueprints Of Effective Biodiversity And Conservation Knowledge Products That Support Marine Policy, Lv Weatherdon, W Appeltans, N Bowles-Newark, Tm Brooks, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Biodiversity and conservation data are generally costly to collect, particularly in the marine realm. Hence, data collected for a given—often scientific—purpose are occasionally contributed toward secondary needs, such as policy implementation or other types of decision-making. However, while the quality and accessibility of marine biodiversity and conservation data have improved over the past decade, the ways in which these data can be used to develop and implement relevant management and conservation measures and actions are not always explicit. For this reason, there are a number of scientifically-sound datasets that are not used systematically to inform policy and decisions. Transforming these …

Consolidation Process Boundaries Of The Degradation Of Mechanical Properties In Compression Moulding Of Natural-Fibre Bio-Polymer Composites, Hossein Mohammad Khanlou, Peter Woodfield, John Summerscales, Wayne Hall
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In spite of the volume of literature on natural fibres, bio-matrix materials and their composites, the choices of optimum process parameters such as moulding temperature, pressure and compression time are still largely based on experience, rules of thumb and general knowledge of the chemical and physical processes occurring in the melt during consolidation. The moulding process itself is a complex balance between processes that must occur for the composite to successfully consolidate and the onset of thermal degradation of the natural fibre and/or matrix materials. This paper brings together models of thermal penetration, melt infusion, thermal degradation and chemical degradation …

Radiocarbon Dating Of A Multi-Phase Passage Tomb On Baltinglass Hill, Co. Wicklow., R Schulting, A Sheridan, A Mcclatchie, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Baltinglass is a multi-chamber Neolithic passage tomb in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, excavated in the 1930s. This paper presents the results of a radiocarbon dating programme on charred wheat grains and hazelnut shell found underlying the cairn, and on cremated human bone found within and near two of the monument’s five chambers. The results are surprising, in that three of the six determinations on calcined bone pre-date by one or two centuries the charred cereals and hazelnut shells sealed under the cairn, dating to c. 3600–3400 calbc. Of the remaining three bone results, one is coeval with the charred plant remains, …

The Bothnian Sea Ice Stream: Early Holocene Retreat Dynamics Of The South-Central Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Sl Greenwood, Cc Clason, J Nyberg, M Jakobsson, P Holmlund
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Gulf of Bothnia hosted a variety of palaeo-glaciodynamic environments throughout the growth and decay of the last Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, from the main ice-sheet divide to a major corridor of marine- and lacustrine-based deglaciation. Ice streaming through the Bothnian and Baltic basins has been widely assumed, and the damming and drainage of the huge proglacial Baltic Ice Lake has been implicated in major regional and hemispheric climate changes. However, the dynamics of palaeo-ice flow and retreat in this large marine sector have until now been inferred only indirectly, from terrestrial, peripheral evidence. Recent acquisition of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry opens …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
2016 marked a milestone in the development of the principles and practice of Geodiversity, Geoheritage and related conservation through the establishment of IUGS’s new International Commission on Geoheritage (ICG) at the 35th International Geological Congress in Cape Town (29th August to 2nd September 2016). This broad subject is fundamental to society’s interaction with the geological sciences, as it concerns all aspects of geological materials and processes, both in a natural and a cultural context and their intrinsic importance for a great range of human activities, including research, education, outreach, cultural value, sustainable development and as part of a shared natural …
Estimating Bedload Transport Rates In A Gravel-Bed River Using Seismic Impact Plates: Model Development And Application, Pj Soar, Pw Downs
Estimating Bedload Transport Rates In A Gravel-Bed River Using Seismic Impact Plates: Model Development And Application, Pj Soar, Pw Downs
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
A data-driven, uncertainty-bound estimation technique for bedload transport rates is developed based on passive sensing devices. The model converts sediment samples to a mass in transit for each instantaneous discharge according to impacts detected and a Monte Carlo simulation of the load determined at random from the particle size distribution. Using impact count data autogenically produces a supply-limited, location-specific and high-resolution time-series of bedload rates, while the probabilistic approach inherently accommodates the stochastic nature of bedload transport. Application to the River Avon (Devon, U.K.) provides cross-sectional bedload rate estimates within the bounds of experimental data and calibrated to observed field …

Mineral Assemblages And Textures Of Granite-Hosted Veins In The Hemerdon W–Sn Deposit: Constraints From Scanning Electron Microscope Chemical X-Ray Mapping, C Wilkins, B Jeffery, J Speer, Ah Dijkstra, J Mcfarlane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
We report the results of a petrological and mineralogical microscopy study of granite-hosted greisen-bordered veins within granite of the Hemerdon W–Sn deposit, Devon, one of the five largest W deposits in the World. The deposit is currently mined at the Drakelands Mine. The Hemerdon granite is a satellite intrusion of the larger Dartmoor pluton of the post-Variscan Cornubian granitoid batholith. Using a range of microscopy techniques, including fast large-area chemical mapping by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) on a scanning electron microscope, we identified three types of mineralised veins in drill core material: W-only veins, Sn-only veins and …
Rural Change In The Context Of Globalization : Examining Theoretical Issues, F Da Silva Machado
Rural Change In The Context Of Globalization : Examining Theoretical Issues, F Da Silva Machado
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Early discussions and theoretical positions concerning rural change were developed by researchers from countries with post-production economies in order to explain the rural transformations. When discussing economic change in rural space over the last decades, Marsden, T. et al. (1993) presented a new perspective for understanding rural restructuring that includes new subjects, such as capital mobility, flexible production regimes, complexity in the relationship between technology and environment, economic deregulation and new political processes. According to these authors, in order to understand such processes, it is necessary to research the effects of globalization at local scale of action. A recurrent theme …

Event Satisfaction And Behavioural Intentions: Examining The Impact Of The London 2012 Olympic Games On Participation In Sport, Graham Brown, Stephen Essex, Guy Assaker, Andrew Smith
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
esearch question: Does event satisfaction influence future intentions to attend events and participate in sport? The research addressed this question by focussing on participation in swimming and the influence of watching the London 2012 Olympic Games; an event which sought to create a legacy of mass sport participation. Research methods: Surveys were conducted at the Olympic Aquatics Centre (n = 185) and at a Leisure Centre in Plymouth in south-west England (n = 135) making it possible to test for differences between people who experienced the London Olympic Games as a live event and those who watched the event on …

A Global Map Of Saltmarshes, C Mcowen, L Weatherdon, J-W Bochove, E Sullivan, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Background Saltmarshes are extremely valuable but often overlooked ecosystems, contributing to livelihoods locally and globally through the associated ecosystem services they provide, including fish production, carbon storage and coastal protection. Despite their importance, knowledge of the current spatial distribution (occurrence and extent) of saltmarshes is incomplete. In light of increasing anthropogenic and environmental pressures on coastal ecosystems, global data on the occurrence and extent of saltmarshes are needed to draw attention to these critical ecosystems and to the benefits they generate for people. Such data can support resource management, strengthen decision-making and facilitate tracking of progress towards global conservation targets …

Agricultural Productivity Growth And The Role Of Capital In South Asia (1980–2013), A Anik, S Rahman, J Sarker
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study assessed agricultural sustainability in South Asia (i.e., Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Nepal) by computing multi-lateral multi-temporal Total Factor Productivity (TFP) indices and their six finer components (technical change, technical-, scale- and mix-efficiency changes, residual scale and residual mix-efficiency changes) and examined the role of capital in driving TFP growth covering a 34-year period (1980-2013). Results revealed that all countries sustained agricultural productivity growth at variable rates with Bangladesh experiencing highest rate estimated @1.05% p.a. followed by India (0.52%), Pakistan (0.38%) and Nepal (0.06% p.a.). There were little or no variation in technical and scale efficiency changes among the …

Abstract. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and salps are major macroplankton contributors to Southern Ocean food webs and krill are also fished commercially. Managing this fishery sustainably, against a backdrop of rapid regional climate change, requires information on distribution and time trends. Many data on the abundance of both taxa have been obtained from net sampling surveys since 1926, but much of this is stored in national archives, sometimes only in notebooks. In order to make these important data accessible we have collated available abundance data (numerical density, no. m−2) of postlarval E. superba and salp individual (multiple species, and whether …
