Minor Parties In English Local Government, Luke Samuel Sloan
Minor Parties In English Local Government, Luke Samuel Sloan
Plymouth Business School Theses
This thesis examines the electoral performance of minor parties in English local government from 1973 to 2008, a period that has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of candidates from such parties. Beginning with an overall assessment of the extent to which candidates from minor parties have contested local elections and the level of success in being elected, the thesis then explores the spatial distribution of minor party candidates, the types of people that become candidates and, considering the relative lack of electoral success, their motivations for standing. Traditional studies of party systems frequently exclude parties that do not …

Corporate Governance, Firm Characteristics And Internet Financial Reporting: Evidence From Egyptian Listed Companies, Ane Elsayed, Aa El-Masry, Im Elbeltag
Plymouth Business School
This study investigates the effect of corporate governance and firm characteristics on the Internet financial reporting (IFR) of the Egyptian listed companies. We develop a disclosure index to measure the three components of the IFR for the Egyptian listed corporations by using an un-weighted checklist. The results find a significant relationship between the three components of IFR (TOTAL, CONTENT and PRESENTATION) and firm size, ownership diffusion, type of business, profitability, audit type, institutional ownership and board size. The results indicate that large non-financial companies that are audited by the big four auditing companies with high diffusion in their ownership and …

Online Disclosure: An Analysis Of Egyptian Listed Companies, Aa El-Masry, A Elsayed, I Elbeltagi
Plymouth Business School
The internet becomes a very useful information disclosure tool in the recent years. Many corporations begin to disseminate their information on their websites to support the different needs of their stakeholders. Internet financial reporting has unique characteristics. These include, the ability to disseminate the information to wide audience on more timely basis and using different types of information format such as (hypertext, multiple file format (PDF, HTML) and using multimedia). As the internet financial reporting practices are voluntary, many companies can improve their disclosure with both the content and presentation of the disclosed information. Consequently, many studies in developed countries …

Exchange Rate And Interest Rate Exposure Of Uk Non-Financial Firms And Industries, Moji Olugbode
Exchange Rate And Interest Rate Exposure Of Uk Non-Financial Firms And Industries, Moji Olugbode
Plymouth Business School Theses
Exchange rate and interest rate risk have been documented as the most managed financial risks by most UK non-financial firms and industries. This is probably because of the severe adverse effects that contrary movements in these financial risks can have on the value of the firm or industry. Nevertheless, empirical studies on these risks have been very few and predominantly limited in scope. Therefore, using a sample of 402 UK non-financial firms from 31 industries, over the period January 1990 to December 2006, this study examines the relevance of these financial risks on the stock returns of firms and industries. …
Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers
Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers
Plymouth Business School Theses
Much of literature is predicated upon the assumption that learning occurring inside the workplace is related to developing expertise associated with the tasks for which the individual is employed and has a background in. This research investigates those individuals who acquire expertise in other disciplines and how the application of that additional expertise changes and enhances the individual and the organisation. By combining perspectives across the disciplinary boundaries and developing multidisciplinary expertise, these individuals demonstrate better methods of achieving business objectives, leading to faster, more imaginative solutions, more frequently, and with significantly less effort. The literature review commenced with defining …
A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast
A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast
Plymouth Business School Theses
Volatility within the UK housing market is thought to be a significant factor driving instability in the wider macro economy. Research investigating the characteristics and behaviour of the housing market has suggested that under supply of housing is one of the key reasons for the high and increasing levels of house prices the nation has recently been experiencing. Consequently, much of the current government's housing policy is aimed at increasing the level of supply by reforming the planning system and increasing investment in the development of new housing. Under supply is also a major concern at the regional level, particularly …
Impact Of Ifrs Adoption On Stock Performance And Financial Indicators: A Comparative Study Between Germany And The Uk, Ashraf Elsayed Mostafa Elbakry
Impact Of Ifrs Adoption On Stock Performance And Financial Indicators: A Comparative Study Between Germany And The Uk, Ashraf Elsayed Mostafa Elbakry
Plymouth Business School Theses
The compulsory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) in Europe has been one of the most important developments in the accounting and finance literature in the last couple of years. IFRSs have promised to provide more accurate and transparent financial statements, and hence to be more value-relevant to investors than local GAAP. Because there are broadly two different accounting systems in force in Europe: the accounting system adopted in common-law countries and the accounting system adopted in code-law countries and because the nature and concept of each accounting system is entirely different, researchers believe that the compulsory adoption of …

Bayesian Model Of The Dynamics Of Motion Integration In Smooth Pursuit And Plaid Perception, Kameliya Dimova
Bayesian Model Of The Dynamics Of Motion Integration In Smooth Pursuit And Plaid Perception, Kameliya Dimova
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
In this thesis, a model of motion integration is described which is based on a recursive Bayesian estimation process. The model displays a dynamic behaviour qualitatively similar to the dynamics of the motion integration process observed experimentally in smooth eye pursuit and plaid perception. The computer simulations of the model applied to smooth pursuit eye movements confirm the psychophysical data both in humans and monkeys, and the physiological data in monkeys. The temporal dynamics of motion integration is demonstrated together with its dependence on contrast, size of the stimulus and added noise. A new theoretical approach to explaining plaid perception …
Total Quality Management And Construction Project Management In Libya, Khaled F. Sherif
Total Quality Management And Construction Project Management In Libya, Khaled F. Sherif
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis sought to explore Total quality management (TQM) implementation and barriers that need to be overcome due to differences between societal cultures, which have become a subject of intense discussion in the wake of the globalisation of the world economy. lnter-societal cultural barriers to TQM implementation were contrasted against the accepted organisational cultural barriers, which are well documented in established literature on this topic. A case study for the analysis was taken from the Libyan construction sector, where TQM is increasingly being reported as being adopted by companies keen to solve quality problems in their industry. This research explored …
From Placebo To Self-Help: Investigating Retention, Outcome And Mechanisms In Self-Directed Gratitude Interventions, Adam William Alfred Geraghty
From Placebo To Self-Help: Investigating Retention, Outcome And Mechanisms In Self-Directed Gratitude Interventions, Adam William Alfred Geraghty
School of Psychology Theses
The research presented in this thesis explored unguided self-help therapy, primarily using a gratitude technique. Psychological mechanisms that underlie the placebo response may also play a primary role in beneficial response to unguided selfhelp therapy. Retention (whether participants completed the intervention), outcome (whether the technique effectively reduced symptoms), and mechanisms (the psychological processes which antecede outcome and retention), were investigated with participants engaging in procedures to improve a diverse range of symptoms, namely, mood, sleep disturbance, body dissatisfaction, depression and anxiety. Studies one and two investigated the role of two placebo mechanisms, response expectancy and motivational concordance, as predictors of …
Internet Marketing For Profit Organizations: A Framework For The Implementation Of Strategic Internet Marketing, Felix Rimbach
Internet Marketing For Profit Organizations: A Framework For The Implementation Of Strategic Internet Marketing, Felix Rimbach
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The development of the Internet has significantly changed the face of established markets and operation approaches across a tremendous spectrum of different industries. Within the competitive environment of those industries, the opportunities and risks derived from the new platform are so ubiquitous that unused opportunities quickly translate into potential risks. Those opportunities and risks demand for a structured approach how to implement a sustainable Internet marketing strategy that targets clear business objectives. Marketing and strategic management theory describes very clear structural principles towards their operational implementation. Based on those principles an extensive literature review has been conducted which confirms the …

The objective of this review is to describe the implementation of human factors principles for the design of alerts in clinical information systems. First, we conduct a review of alarm systems to identify human factors principles that are employed in the design and implementation of alerts. Second, we review the medical informatics literature to provide examples of the implementation of human factors principles in current clinical information systems using alerts to provide medication decision support. Last, we suggest actionable recommendations for delivering effective clinical decision support using alerts. A review of studies from the medical informatics literature suggests that many …
Sentence Processing: Linking Language To Motor Chains, F Chersi, S Thill, T Ziemke, Am Borghi
Sentence Processing: Linking Language To Motor Chains, F Chersi, S Thill, T Ziemke, Am Borghi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A growing body of evidence in cognitive science and neuroscience points towards the existence of a deep interconnection between cognition, perception and action. According to this embodied perspective language is grounded in the sensorimotor system and language understanding is based on a mental simulation process (Jeannerod, 2007 ; Gallese, 2008 ; Barsalou, 2009 ). This means that during action words and sentence comprehension the same perception, action, and emotion mechanisms implied during interaction with objects are recruited. Among the neural underpinnings of this simulation process an important role is played by a sensorimotor matching system known as the mirror neuron …

Grounding Action Words In The Sensorimotor Interaction With The World: Experiments With A Simulated Icub Humanoid Robot., D Marocco, A Cangelosi, K Fischer, T Belpaeme
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper presents a cognitive robotics model for the study of the embodied representation of action words. The present research will present how an iCub humanoid robot can learn the meaning of action words (i.e. words that represent dynamical events that happen in time) by physically interacting with the environment and linking the effects of its own actions with the behavior observed on the objects before and after the action. The control system of the robot is an artificial neural network trained to manipulate an object through a Back-Propagation-Through-Time algorithm. We will show that in the presented model the grounding …

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Oxidative-Induced Neoplastic Transformation, Daniel J. Puleston
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Oxidative-Induced Neoplastic Transformation, Daniel J. Puleston
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a normal occurrence in the life of a cell. ROS are derived from both exogenous and endogenous sources and take part in a plethora of normal physiological mechanisms from host immunity to cell cycle regulation. However, ROS also exhibit a deleterious, disruptive character that means they must now be taken seriously as a genuine carcinogenic agent able to alter a variety of pathways leading to the initiation of cancer. The two-sidedness of ROS means that the relationship between ROS and the onset and progression of cancer is hard to determine. ROS and …
The Role Of The Virus-Phytoplankton System In Marine Biogeochemical Cycling: Possible Impacts Of Climate Change, George Sorensen
The Role Of The Virus-Phytoplankton System In Marine Biogeochemical Cycling: Possible Impacts Of Climate Change, George Sorensen
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Phytoplankton is the main driver of ocean net primary production (Falkowski et al., 1998) and a dominant force behind biogeochemical cycling in the ocean. It is a component of one of the oldest and best described virus-host relationships (e.g. Suttle et al., 1990). Viruses have typically been viewed as pathogens of marine organisms but it has become clear that they also play a critical role in biogeochemical processes in marine systems, themselves falling into the category of dissolved organic matter (DOM) (Wilhelm & Suttle, 1999). Viruses play a large part in carbon (Middelboe & Lyck, 2002), sulphur (Hill et al., …
Understanding Unconscious Plagiarism: The Effects Of Idea Elaboration And Perceived Idea Quality On Later Recall And Recognition Of Ideas, Rachel Elliman
Understanding Unconscious Plagiarism: The Effects Of Idea Elaboration And Perceived Idea Quality On Later Recall And Recognition Of Ideas, Rachel Elliman
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Previous research has shown that idea improvement and perceived idea quality have differential effects on recall-own and generate-new plagiarism. Participants completed a generative task in pairs and read some ideas perceived to be of high quality before elaborating on a selection of the ideas. It was expected that other-generated ideas that had been improved or read out loud would be more susceptible to unconscious plagiarism. Participants returned a week later to complete recall-own generated, recall-own read, generate-new and source monitoring tasks. Partner-generated ideas were significantly more likely to be plagiarised following improvement only. Participants were significantly more likely to plagiarise …
Does Culture In The Darkness Effect Retina Morphology Of Sepia Officinalis?, Rachael Warrington
Does Culture In The Darkness Effect Retina Morphology Of Sepia Officinalis?, Rachael Warrington
The Plymouth Student Scientist
In Sepia officinalis there was no significant difference (P = 0.241) for the eye diameter in terms of body length. The body length was significantly longer in cuttlefish reared in the dark treatment (P = 0.029). This could be due to photoperiod regulating the release of growth hormones. The outer segment is similar in both treatments containing small compacted rhabdomeres elongating towards the inner segment. The dark retina has a thicker outer segment than the light, which could be an adaptation increasing the probability for photon capture by the rhabdomeres. Rhabdomeres vary little between treatments in comparison to vesicle cells …
The Impact Of Captivity On The Behaviour Of Mute Swans (Cygnus Olor), Jessica Guyon
The Impact Of Captivity On The Behaviour Of Mute Swans (Cygnus Olor), Jessica Guyon
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The mute swan (Cygnus olor) is a large water fowl species widely distributed in Great Britain. They are residential and territorial so often there is no interchange between groups. Swans face many injuries in the wild so are brought into wild life centres for treatment and rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to see if their captive behaviour differed from the behaviour of wild conspecifics. This was achieved by performing observations of captive and wild mute swans. From this it was found that several behaviours were more common in captivity these were standing, standing whilst preening or feeding, lying, …
The Effect Of Imipramine Hcl On Haemolysis Of Horse Erythrocytes, Tamara Esther Farrant
The Effect Of Imipramine Hcl On Haemolysis Of Horse Erythrocytes, Tamara Esther Farrant
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The mechanism of action of tricyclic antidepressant (TCAs) is not fully understood. The effect of the TCA imipramine on the haemolysis of erythrocytes was investigated, focussing on dosage and incubation time. The method used a drug free red blood cell (RBC) haemolysis assay (Watts & Handy, 2007) comparing experimental drug concentrations ranging from 0.0904 mg/ml – 90.4 mg/ml. Incubation time effects were also investigated, and haemolysis increased with decreasing osmolarity. Compared with the control the percentage haemolysis increased significantly with higher concentrations of imipramine, but was reduced by 0.0904 mg/ml imipramine. Haemolysis also increased with longer incubation time in both …

Labrador Sea Water Formation In The Irminger Basin And Its Dependence On The North Atlantic Oscillation, Philip Garner
Labrador Sea Water Formation In The Irminger Basin And Its Dependence On The North Atlantic Oscillation, Philip Garner
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Historical temperature and salinity data from the Irminger basin were analysed to determine if Labrador Sea Water forms in the Irminger Basin and if deep convection in the region is dependent on the North Atlantic Oscillation. This was undertaken by analysing the Surface Mixed Layer depth during the Boreal winter (December-March) and comparing it to the North Atlantic Oscillation Index. We find there is evidence of LSW formation in the region and there is a weak to moderate correlation with the North Atlantic Oscillation Index.

Developing An Attachment To Place Through Diy, Megan Heast
The Plymouth Student Scientist
An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was conducted of semi-structured interviews, with the aim of investigating factors which affect attachment to, and identity within the home and whether completion of DIY projects has any effect on these. The participants were eight students from the University of Plymouth who signed up to the study as part of a course requirement, and two others who were known to the experimenter to have undertaken DIY within their respective homes. The findings show that the level of personalisation and sense of ownership a home owner feels within their property, are key factors to attachment and …

How Effective Can Gsm Signals, Using Dcm, Be As An Aid To Coastal Navigation?, Charles W.G. Brewer
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The growth of the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) network has been considerable in recent years, and coverage can be expected in the majority of larger ports around the world. Additionally, the positioning of base stations means that coverage often extends some distance out to sea. Previous research has established that by using GSM signals a relatively accurate position can be determined when using the Database Correlation Method (DCM) in built-up urban areas (Ahonen and Eskelinen, 2003). Conducted in the Plymouth Sound area using commercially available software, this project examines the effectiveness of GSM signal positioning using DCM in …

Nitric Oxide And The Immune System: A Literature Review, Hannah Hosking
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Nitric oxide (NO) was discovered as a biologically active molecule over two decades ago and it has since been recognised as one of the most versatile components of the immune system, with involvement in both cytotoxic and regulatory functions. It is a readily diffusible gas that has been established as a universal messenger, capable of mediating cell-cell communication throughout the body. It is involved in the pathogenesis and also the control of infectious diseases, autoimmunity, chronic degenerative diseases and tumours. This review will collate, contrast and compare recently published literature, to provide an up-to-date and contemporary overview of the substantial …
