Protocol For A Prospective Double-Blind, Randomised, Placebo-Controlled Feasibility Trial Of Octreotide Infusion During Liver Transplantation, Jeremy Fabes, Gareth Ambler, Bina Shah, Norman R. Williams, Daniel Martin, Brian R. Davidson, Michael Spiro

Peninsula Medical School

IntroductionLiver transplantation is a complex operation that can provide significant improvements in quality of life and survival to the recipients. However, serious complications are common and include major haemorrhage, hypotension and renal failure. Blood transfusion and the development of acute kidney injury lead to both short-term and long-term poor patient outcomes, including an increased risk of death, graft failure, length of stay and reduced quality of life. Octreotide may reduce the incidence of renal dysfunction, perioperative haemorrhage and enhance intraoperative blood pressure. However, octreotide does have risks, including resistant bradycardia, hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia and QT prolongation. Hence, a randomised controlled …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The cryospheric response to climatic warming responsible for recent Arctic sea ice decline can be elucidated using marine geological archives which offer an important long-term perspective. The Holocene Thermal Maximum, between 10 and 6 thousand years ago, provides an opportunity to investigate sea ice during a warmer-than-present interval. Here we use organic biomarkers and benthic foraminiferal stable isotope data from two sediment cores in the northernmost Barents Sea (>80 °N) to reconstruct seasonal sea ice between 11.7 and 9.1 thousand years ago. We identify the continued persistence of sea-ice biomarkers which suggest spring sea ice concentrations as high as …

That’S Me In The Spotlight: Self-Relevance Modulates Attentional Breadth, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae Dec 2021

That’S Me In The Spotlight: Self-Relevance Modulates Attentional Breadth, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae

School of Psychology

A core prediction of models of social-cognitive functioning is that attention is preferentially tuned to self-relevant material. Surprisingly, however, evidence in support of this viewpoint is scant. Remedying this situation, here we demonstrated that self-relevance influences the distribution of attentional resources during decisional processing. In a flanker task (N = 60), participants reported if to-be-judged stimuli either denoted, or were owned by, the self or a friend. A consistent pattern of results emerged across both judgment tasks. Whereas the identification of friend-related targets was speeded when the items were flanked by compatible compared with incompatible flankers, responses to self-related targets …

School of Art, Design and Architecture

There is a limited number of university buildings designed to the Passivhaus standard, therefore, only a few studies have assessed the standard's adoption in this context. This paper aims to address this significant gap by investigating the energy and carbon performance of The Enterprise Centre (TEC), a UK university building, designed and certified to the Passivhaus standard. The building's energy performance was monitored for four years and was predicted by the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) simulations. Results show that TEC met the primary energy requirement of 120 kWh/m2 and space cooling requirement of 15 kWh/m2 during the first four years …

Fear Of Cancer Recurrence And Adverse Cancer Treatment Outcomes: Predicting 2- To 5-Year Fear Of Recurrence From Post-Treatment Symptoms And Functional Problems In Uveal Melanoma Survivors, Sl Brown, P Fisher, L Hope-Stone, B Damato, Et Al Nov 2021

Fear Of Cancer Recurrence And Adverse Cancer Treatment Outcomes: Predicting 2- To 5-Year Fear Of Recurrence From Post-Treatment Symptoms And Functional Problems In Uveal Melanoma Survivors, Sl Brown, P Fisher, L Hope-Stone, B Damato, Et Al

School of Psychology

Objective The fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) in later survivorship can lead to poorer mental health, quality of life and physical and functional recovery. Later-occurring FCR may be a consequence of late-emerging physical symptoms and functional problems from cancer or its treatment. Based on the self-regulation model, we predicted that persistent or escalating symptoms and functional problems would prospectively predict FCR observed 2–5 years after diagnosis and treatment. Methods This is a five-year study of 708 uveal melanoma (UM) patients, measuring self-reported visual and ocular symptoms, functional problems and FCR at 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months post-diagnosis. …

The Purpose Of Copyright- Moving Beyond Theory, Simone Schroff Nov 2021

The Purpose Of Copyright- Moving Beyond Theory, Simone Schroff

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The rationales for copyright protection have come under intense and sustained scrutiny over the last two decades. The debates are wide ranging and even challenge that copyright is a suitable tool to support the creative industries in their economic and cultural function. The result is politicization, stagnating reforms, stakeholder dissatisfaction and the notion that copyright policy is failing. This article argues that the copyright aims need to be reassessed from an internal perspective rather than by relying on external normative benchmarks. It applies conventional content analysis to European Union (EU) copyright policy to identify the cross-institutional minimum consensus on what …

Nature-based solutions are widely advocated for freshwater ecosystem conservation and restoration. As increasing amounts of river restoration are undertaken, the need to understand the ecological response to different measures and where measures are best applied becomes more pressing. It is essential that appraisal methods follow a sound scientific approach. Here, experienced restoration appraisal experts review current best practice and academic knowledge to make recommendations and provide guidance that will enable practitioners to gather and analyse meaningful data, using scientific rigor to appraise restoration success. What should be monitored depends on the river type and the type and scale of intervention. …

Anchoring And Migration Of Balloon In Reboa, C. C. Mei, Y. L. Li, S. Michele, P. Sammarco, P. B. Mcbeth Nov 2021

Anchoring And Migration Of Balloon In Reboa, C. C. Mei, Y. L. Li, S. Michele, P. Sammarco, P. B. Mcbeth

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A mechanical theory is described for a phenomenon in the surgical procedure of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA). In this procedure a balloon is pushed into the aorta by a catheter and then inflated in order to stop haemorrhage. One of the hazards of this procedure is the tendency for the balloon to migrate away from its intended position. This work examines the mechanics of balloon anchoring and migration by analysing the effects of pressure waves, the sheet flow and solid friction in the thin gap between the walls of the aorta and balloon. A viscoelastic model …

Maritime Cyber Security: A Global Challenge Tackled Through Distinct Regional Approaches, Stavros Karamperidis, Chronis Kapalidis, Tim Watson

Plymouth Business School

Maritime cyber security is an emerging issue that requires immediate attention, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Feedback received from global shipping professionals indicate that a common threat to the industry, such as cyber security, is dealt with differently among industry practitioners around the globe. Data collected from two targeted focus groups (one in Europe and the second in Asia, two leading groups in the maritime transport sector) demonstrated that, based on technology adoption maturity, cyber security is perceived differently between these groups. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted these differences. Our findings lead to useful intelligence that will inform …

30-Year Record Of Himalaya Mass-Wasting Reveals Landscape Perturbations By Extreme Events, Joshua N. Jones, Sarah J. Boulton, Martin Stokes, Georgina L. Bennett, Michael R.Z. Whitworth Nov 2021

30-Year Record Of Himalaya Mass-Wasting Reveals Landscape Perturbations By Extreme Events, Joshua N. Jones, Sarah J. Boulton, Martin Stokes, Georgina L. Bennett, Michael R.Z. Whitworth

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In mountainous environments, quantifying the drivers of mass-wasting is fundamental for understanding landscape evolution and improving hazard management. Here, we quantify the magnitudes of mass-wasting caused by the Asia Summer Monsoon, extreme rainfall, and earthquakes in the Nepal Himalaya. Using a newly compiled 30-year mass-wasting inventory, we establish empirical relationships between monsoon-triggered mass-wasting and monsoon precipitation, before quantifying how other mass-wasting drivers perturb this relationship. We find that perturbations up to 5 times greater than that expected from the monsoon alone are caused by rainfall events with 5-to-30-year return periods and short-term (< 2 year) earthquake-induced landscape preconditioning. In 2015, the landscape preconditioning is strongly controlled by the topographic signature of the Gorkha earthquake, whereby high Peak Ground Accelerations coincident with high excess topography (rock volume above a landscape threshold angle) amplifies landscape damage. Furthermore, earlier earthquakes in 1934, 1988 and 2011 are not found to influence 2015 mass-wasting.

Heat Transfer Modelling Of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites, Yuan Fang, Long Yuan Li, Dassekpo J-B Mawulé, Sung Hwan Jang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

n this paper an analytical prediction model for the heat transfer analysis of two-phase composite materials is developed. Formulations for the effective density, effective specific heat and effective thermal conductivity of the composite materials are derived. The present model considers not only the effect of interfacial thermal resistance between CNTs and polymer matrix but also the influence of fibre aspect ratio of CNTs on the effective thermal conductivity of the composites. The validation of the model is also provided by using available experimental data to demonstrate the appropriateness and reliability of the present model.

Challenges And Coping: Perspectives Of Syrian And Iraqi Refugee Youth In Germany, Lina Alhaddad, Robin Goodwin, Patricia Kanngiesser

School of Psychology

Refugee youth constitute around a third of the refugee population in Germany. We studied the experiences of newly arrived Syrian and Iraqi refugee youth, aged 14 to 18 years (N = 20), in Germany. We utilized semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to investigate (a) the main challenges faced by youth and (b) their main coping resources to deal with these challenges. We grouped challenges into three levels: the individual level, the immediate social level, and the broader societal level. The most frequently mentioned challenges in our sample related to psychological wellbeing, school, friendship, accommodation, and discrimination. Youth reported relying on …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Understanding the relative performance of data collection methods is critical for the production of robust results in any biological field study. This is particularly relevant for monitoring studies of rare and inconspicuous species, such as some cetaceans. Here, we compared how passive acoustic and visual survey methods performed when surveying a multispecies cetacean community in a large-scale survey area and whether the simultaneous application of these methods leads to complementary results. For both methods we compared (1) frequency of unscheduled survey stoppages, (2) detection ranges, (3) success in identifying species, (4) precedence of either method in synchronous detections, (5) detection …
