Acceptance Of E-Mobility In India, Anja Marlen Buechler Jan 2023

Acceptance Of E-Mobility In India, Anja Marlen Buechler

Plymouth Business School Theses

India signed in 2015 the historic Paris climate agreement together with more than 170 nations in order to fight against global warming and to reduce CO2-emissions in order to control global warming caused by greenhouse effect. The transportation sector was in 2021 the second biggest source of CO2-emissions worldwide. Decarbonising this sector will have a major effect on the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. That is the reason why this sector will be challenged by the pressure through politics and legal demands for CO2-neutral and emission free vehicles. India is also facing those challenges. At the Glasgow Climate Change Conference in …

Effects Of Preservation By Ethanol On Δ13c And Δ15n Of Three Tissues Of The Critically Endangered European Eel Anguilla Anguilla, Rose M. Boardman, Adrian C. Pinder, Adam T. Piper, Catherine Gutmann Roberts, Rosalind M. Wright, John Robert Britton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The temporal effects of ethanol preservation on the δ13C and δ15N values of tissues excised from European eel Anguilla anguilla were assessed. Preservation significantly enriched 13C values of fin and mucus but not dorsal muscle. The 13C enrichment occurred in the initial 15 days of preservation and was independent of initial eel mass. Tissue preservation effects on δ15N values were negligible. These tissue-specific isotopic shifts should be considered when ethanol-preserved eel samples are used.

Testing The Adequacy Of Formal Models Of An Irrational Learning Effect, Lenard Dome Jan 2023

Testing The Adequacy Of Formal Models Of An Irrational Learning Effect, Lenard Dome

School of Psychology Theses

The inverse base-rate effect (IBRE) is an irrational phenomenon in predictive learning characterized by as a preference for rare, unlikely outcomes in the face of ambiguity. This thesis investigates the adequacy of formal explanations for this puzzling phenomenon. In the first project, I will focus on mechanisms of learning that mathematical models posit underlie this preference. A class of attentional explanation produces a counter-intuitive prediction: the effect disappears under concurrent load. I confirm the prediction, but only when participants were under an obvious time constraint -- irrationality reduces under increased task demands. This suggests that multiple learning mechanisms operate independently …

The Application Of Data Analytics Technologies For The Predictive Maintenance Of Industrial Facilities In Internet Of Things (Iot) Environments, Thomas Rieger Jan 2023

The Application Of Data Analytics Technologies For The Predictive Maintenance Of Industrial Facilities In Internet Of Things (Iot) Environments, Thomas Rieger

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In industrial production environments, the maintenance of equipment has a decisive influence on costs and on the plannability of production capacities. In particular, unplanned failures during production times cause high costs, unplanned downtimes and possibly additional collateral damage. Predictive Maintenance starts here and tries to predict a possible failure and its cause so early that its prevention can be prepared and carried out in time. In order to be able to predict malfunctions and failures, the industrial plant with its characteristics, as well as wear and ageing processes, must be modelled. Such modelling can be done by replicating its physical …

Bond Behaviour Between Carbon Fibre Strand And Mortar Under Marine Environment, Jie Ji Jan 2023

Bond Behaviour Between Carbon Fibre Strand And Mortar Under Marine Environment, Jie Ji

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Owing to the steel corrosion in traditional steel reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environment, the present study explores carbon fibre textile reinforced mortar (TRM) as the alternative construction material. Moreover, sea sand and seawater can be used in casting mortar in this study, because carbon fibre is non-corrosive. Focusing on the long-term bond degradation at the interface between the carbon fibre strand (CFS) and mortar in carbon fibre TRM under marine environments, experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out by using single CFS-reinforced mortar (CFSRM) specimens. Interfacial debonding is one of the key failure modes in TRM, due …

Modelling Of Chloride Transport In Concrete, Lixuan Mao Jan 2023

Modelling Of Chloride Transport In Concrete, Lixuan Mao

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel has been recognized as the primary factor in degrading the durability of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chloride-rich environments. This research aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms of ionic transport behaviors in both natural and recycled aggregate concrete and to develop accurate and reliable prediction models to estimate the chloride transport processes during diffusion and migration tests. Based on the understanding of ionic diffusion, electromigration, polarization, and physicochemical reactions, several numerical and analytical models for chloride penetration in heterogenous concrete are proposed. Firstly, Poisson, Laplace, and current conservation models are developed based on Gauss’s law …

Single-System And Dual-Process Accounts Of Explicit And Implicit Memory, Rory Wilfrid Spanton Jan 2023

Single-System And Dual-Process Accounts Of Explicit And Implicit Memory, Rory Wilfrid Spanton

School of Psychology Theses

While some expressions of memory are accompanied by conscious awareness, others do not elicit this awareness yet still impact task performance. Theorists have long questioned whether these explicit and implicit forms of memory are governed by separate cognitive systems or a single system. There is much behavioural evidence for multiple-systems and dual-process accounts, mainly focusing on studies of recognition memory and long-term repetition priming. However, experimental results and mathematical modelling have shown the ability of a single-system account to explain the relationship between various forms of explicit and implicit memory. This thesis uses behavioural experiments and mathematical modelling to further …

The Role Of Circadian Entrainment In Rice Blast Disease, Ciaran Griffin Jan 2023

The Role Of Circadian Entrainment In Rice Blast Disease, Ciaran Griffin

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A circadian clock is present in some capacity in almost all forms of life, and is useful for a wide array of traits, but crucially allows organisms to predict future conditions and adapt their behaviour to synchronise with, and thrive under, their dynamic environment. Accordingly, plant environmental stress responses are gated in a circadian manner, including that for pathogenic defence and immunity. Comparatively less work has been carried out on the plant pathogens, but there are increasing reports of pathogens capable of rhythmically altering their behaviour and virulence-related traits. Magnaporthe oryzae, the fungal pathogen responsible for the destruction of enough …

Towards The Validation Of Novel Cognitive And Physiological Indicators Of Affective State In Horses (Equus Caballus), Sarah Kappel Jan 2023

Towards The Validation Of Novel Cognitive And Physiological Indicators Of Affective State In Horses (Equus Caballus), Sarah Kappel

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Assessing animal emotions reliably is crucial for making accurate decisions about animal welfare, but subjective affective (emotional) states are inaccessible for direct measurement. We know that negative affect modulates attention in humans and some animals. The overarching aim of this thesis is to investigate if the preferential attention allocation towards certain information (i.e. attention bias, AB) could be a potential proxy measure of affective valence in horses. First, I provide an overview of the theoretical background to attention and AB by reviewing the literature on AB in humans and animals (Chapter 2). I examine which methodological aspects need consideration when …
