Magnetic And Magnetocaloric Properties Of Co2-Xfexvga Heusler Alloys, K. Schroeder, J. Waybright, P. Kharel, W. Zhang, S. Valloppilly, J. Herran, P. Lukashev, Y. Huh, R. Skomsk, D. J. Sellmyer
Magnetic And Magnetocaloric Properties Of Co2-Xfexvga Heusler Alloys, K. Schroeder, J. Waybright, P. Kharel, W. Zhang, S. Valloppilly, J. Herran, P. Lukashev, Y. Huh, R. Skomsk, D. J. Sellmyer
Faculty Work
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of iron-substituted Co2VGa alloys, Co2-xFexVGa (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3), were investigated. The Fe-substituted samples, prepared by arc melting, melt spinning, and annealing, crystallized in the L2(1) Heusler structure, without any secondary phases. The Curie temperature and high-field magnetization at 50 K decreased from 345 K and 44 emu/g (1.90 mu(B)/f.u.) for Co2VGa to 275 K and 39 emu/g (1.66 mu(B)/f.u.) for Co1.7Fe0.3VGa, respectively, but the maximum entropy change remained almost insensitive to Fe concentration for x 1.85Fe0.15VGa. First-principle …
Out-Of-Plane Electron Transport In Finite Layer Mos2, R Holzapfel, Jake Weber, Pavel Lukashev, Andrew Stollenwerk
Out-Of-Plane Electron Transport In Finite Layer Mos2, R Holzapfel, Jake Weber, Pavel Lukashev, Andrew Stollenwerk
Faculty Work
Ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) has been used to study the processes affecting electron transport along the [0001] direction of finite layer MoS2 flakes deposited onto the surface of Au/Si(001) Schottky diodes. Prominent features present in the differential spectra from the MoS2 flakes are consistent with the density of states of finite layer MoS2 calculated using density functional theory. The ability to observe the electronic structure of the MoS2 appears to be due to the relatively smooth density of states of Si in this energy range and a substantial amount of elastic or quasi-elastic scattering along the MoS2/Au/Si(001) path. Demonstration …
Factors Influencing Corn Fungicide Treatment Decisions, Alicia Rosburg, Luisa Menapace
Factors Influencing Corn Fungicide Treatment Decisions, Alicia Rosburg, Luisa Menapace
Faculty Work
Fungal disease management in U.S. corn production has undergone a major shift in the last 2 decades. The decision to apply fungicide, a management practice that was once rarely considered, is now contemplated annually by many U.S. corn producers. We investigate potential factors underlying the fungicide treatment decision. We use economics, agronomy, and plant pathology literature to develop a conceptual model of the fungicide treatment decision and test the model using a survey of Midwest corn producers. We find the treatment decision is positively related to perceived economic gains, but heuristic factors also have a strong influence.

Novel methods to increase crop productivity are required to meet anticipated demands for food, feed, fiber, and fuel. It is becoming feasible to use modern sensors and data analysis techniques for predicting plant growth and productivity based on genomic, phenotypic, and environmental data. To design and construct crops that deliver desired traits requires trained personnel with scientific and engineering expertise as well as a variety of “soft” skills. To address these needs at Iowa State University, we developed a graduate specialization called “Predictive Plant Phenomics” (P3). Although some of our experiences may be unique, many of the specialization’s principles are …

Community Engagement Celebration Day
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a Society of Women Engineers (SWE) program designed to give middle school aged girls experiences and positive role-models in engineering careers. The University of Northern Iowa began partnering with Cedar Valley SWE to host an EYH event on the UNI campus in 2014. On Saturday, November 11th, 2017, the University hosted its 5th EYH event for more than 150 area 5th to 8th grade girls. Participants attended three small group active sessions (no more than 12 per group) in laboratories and classrooms in McCollum Science Hall, Latham Hall, and the Industrial Technology Building. Session leaders …

Panthers Exploring Fields Of Opportunity: Providing Faculty Time And Resources To Reach Out To Iowa Schools And Other Educational Institutions, Victoria Robinson, Benjamin Forsyth
Community Engagement Celebration Day
This poster will detail a unique effort that our Educator Preparation Program and College of Education has made in the last two years to provide faculty an innovative way to interact with various education stakeholders across our state. Faculty received dedicated time and resources to leave their classrooms and explore innovative, diverse and exceptional projects and programs our PK-12 partners and other educational institutions use to impact the profession. These visits were then shared with the program to inform our current practices. The program was a very simple concept, but has been very successful. Nearly 75 faculty across the University …

Infusing Forgiveness Education Into Hope Tree Acres Summer Camp, Suzanne Freedman
Community Engagement Celebration Day
The purpose of this project is to teach a curriculum on forgiveness education using children’s literature to children attending Hope Tree Acres’ Nature and Animal camp. Hope Tree Acres Nature and Animal Camp is a week long camp for children who have experienced trauma in their lives and are experiencing anger, anxiety and/or depression because of their past negative experience(s). Students who would be potential campers include foster children, children whose parents are in jail, children whose parents are using or have used drugs, and children who have been physically, emotionally or sexually abused. Hope Tree Acres will hold two …

Community Engagement Celebration Day
PIEER began in the Spring of 2014 as a partnership project in environmental resilience and equity, ERE issues with the Colleges of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences, CHAS RRTTC and the UNI Provost’s Office. It has continued since as a student internship and community engagement effort designed to offer PIEER interns the opportunity to explore the social/cultural, racial ethnic, technological, and equity aspects of environmental sustainability challenges. It’s goals are to expand knowledge and understand about and across ERE issues, to allow students to examine their understanding of differences and build bridges across difference, and to meaningfully engage the campus and …

Community Engagement Celebration Day
This project will showcase the work that the student organization, Art for El Salvador has done the past few years in conjunction with the non-profit organization, Art for El Salvador. The organization was brought to UNI by Maria and Niah Howard, both graduates of UNI. A student organization was formed and together the two groups have made and sold art to help provide educational needs to impoverished rural communities in El Salvador. Through the hard work of many people, Art for El Salvador actually provided the resources for a community of Casseria Mediagua to build a new middle school. The …
