Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients

I completed my Koob scholarship project, which was to create a system to more easily track reunification, re-entry, and re-abuse statistics for children who are part of the Parent Representation Project. I did this by creating an excel spreadsheet and collected data on the names of the clients, the date the case was opened and then closed, the date of the removal of the children if they were removed from parent custody, if the children were returned to the parent custody, how long they were removed from parent custody, if the children re-entered the child welfare system and if re-abuse …

Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients

During my internship, I planned enrichment activities and recruited volunteers to lead those activities for our Free Summer Lunch Program, including an end of year celebratory pool/ pizza party . I created a social media plan to get engaged with more of our social media audience. I updated our “Wish Book” for our partnering agency wants. I updated and revised our selfreferral youth assistance directory. Finally, I was also able to assist with marketing our event of Christmas in July, collecting and distributing over 1,500 personal hygiene products throughout our community.

The Effects Of Varying Nitrogen Amounts On The Growth And Leaf Morphology Of Cattail Species, Anissa Forero, Kenneth J. Elgersma Jul 2018

The Effects Of Varying Nitrogen Amounts On The Growth And Leaf Morphology Of Cattail Species, Anissa Forero, Kenneth J. Elgersma

Undergraduate Student Work

In Iowa, there are three types of cattails (Typha spp.): Typha latifolia (broadleaf), Typha angustifolia (narrow leaf), and Typha x glauca. T. latifolia is native to Iowa, while T. angustifolia and T. x glauca are not native. Cattails are found in wetlands, highly productive ecosystems that provide many services such as water filtration and flood control.

However, Typha are opportunistic and invasive: if left uncontrolled, Typha grows rapidly by clonal reproduction, quickly dominating the ecosystem, lowering overall diversity and hurting the wetland’s conservation value. Being able to easily identify these taxa will improve the pace of future research.

The purpose …

Collecting Carbon: An Analysis Of Soil Carbon In Conservation Reserve Program Fields And Agricultural Fields, Cody Welcher, Destiny Magee, Kenneth Elgersma Jul 2018

Collecting Carbon: An Analysis Of Soil Carbon In Conservation Reserve Program Fields And Agricultural Fields, Cody Welcher, Destiny Magee, Kenneth Elgersma

Undergraduate Student Work

Intensive agricultural practices are associated with detrimental effects to the environment including, but not limited to, increasing the rate of soil erosion, introducing pollutants to water supply, reduced habitat for various species, and reduced atmospheric carbon sequestration in soils.

The Conservation Reserve Program allows farmers to enroll sensitive lands into the program and out of circulation for agricultural purposes. It has been shown to increase soil carbon sequestration, reduce erosion, increase water and air quality, and provide habitat restoration for displaced species, along with other benefits.

Mass Analysis Of Ballistic Electron Spectra, Willie Brown, Andrew Stollenwerk Jul 2018

Mass Analysis Of Ballistic Electron Spectra, Willie Brown, Andrew Stollenwerk

Undergraduate Student Work

The metal/semiconductor interface is of vital importance to a number of electronic devices. The energy barrier that forms at this interface can dominate the overall electronic properties of a device. A poor interface can prevent a device from reaching its full potential. Thus, a better understanding of the mechanisms that determine this barrier could aid in the optimization of an interface for a particular application. For the current project, electrons were shot into gold films deposited on a molybdenum disulfide (𝑀𝑜𝑆2) semiconductor at different voltages using a scanning tunneling microscope in a ballistic electron configuration. The number of …

Relationships Between Fluvial Ecosystems And The Iowan Erosion Surface, Lilian Heinzel, Chad E. Heinzel Jul 2018

Relationships Between Fluvial Ecosystems And The Iowan Erosion Surface, Lilian Heinzel, Chad E. Heinzel

Undergraduate Student Work

The streams and rivers of the Iowan Surface partially form the foundation of our local ecosystems, everything from providing drinking water to producing floods. The Black Hawk Creek, Cedar River, and Maquoketa River were studied in the months of June and July of 2018. The goal of the research was to understand the ecology of each water way, how life was sustained by these rivers and creek and how the surrounding landscape may have determined the features of the waterways. Datasheets were filled out describing the sites’ ecological and geologic makeup, and GIS Trimble units were used to chart the …
