Some Effects Of Fertilization On Nitrification In High-Lime Soils, F. B. Smith, Hartzell C. Dean Jan 1933

Some Effects Of Fertilization On Nitrification In High-Lime Soils, F. B. Smith, Hartzell C. Dean

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Applications of potassium chloride at the rate of 100, 200 and 500 pounds per acre were made on two soils containing a high calcium content. Oat straw at the rate of 2 tons of dry matter per acre was applied alone and in combination with potassium chloride. Sweet clover at the rate of 2 tons of dry matter per acre was applied alone and in combination with potassium chloride. Samples of the soils were taken 4 weeks after treatment in the greenhouse and again after 5 months for nitrification determinations.

A Modification Of Bettendorff's Arsenic Test And A Quantitative Determination From Small Concentrations Of Mercury, W. Bernard King, F. E. Brown Jan 1933

A Modification Of Bettendorff's Arsenic Test And A Quantitative Determination From Small Concentrations Of Mercury, W. Bernard King, F. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The presence of mercuric chloride affects Bettendorff's test for arsenic. The addition of enough mercuric chloride to make its concentration 0.00001 M., before the addition of stannous chloride: (1) hastens the appearance of the coloration, (2) increases the sensitivity of Bettendorff's test ten-fold to one hundred fold and (3) enables the test to be made in a lower concentration of hydrochloric acid. Mercuric chloride in 0.00001 M. solutions does not produce turbidity when stannous chloride is added. In the presence of mercuric chloride Bettendorff's test will detect a smaller quantity of arsenic than Gutzeit's test or Marsh's test. The rate …

Paschen-Back Effect Of Hyperfine Structure And Polarization Of Resonance Radiation: Sodium, N. P. Heydenburg Jan 1933

Paschen-Back Effect Of Hyperfine Structure And Polarization Of Resonance Radiation: Sodium, N. P. Heydenburg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Preliminary measurements on the polarization of resonance radiation of the second doublet of sodium when a magnetic field is applied with its direction parallel to the incident light beam shows that the polarization changes from a value of about 10 per cent in zero magnetic field to a value of 34 per cent in fields less than 100 gausses. In order that a Paschen-Back effect of the hyperfine structure of the 52P 1/2 , 3/2 levels should occur in field strengths of this order of magnitude the hyperfine separation constant for these levels must be of the order.0005 …

New Charts For The Radioactive Series, C. J. Lapp Jan 1933

New Charts For The Radioactive Series, C. J. Lapp

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Very little that is new has been contributed to the arrangement of the three radioactive series in the past fifteen years. Recently Gamow and others have pointed out the desirability for a fourth series. Fred Allison and his co-workers have recently examined radioactive matter by a magneto-optical technique and report that they find 90 radioactive electrons and isotopes. These are arranged in four series. Substantial changes are made in arrangements of the three old series, particularly the actinium and the thorium series.

Reinfection Of Rats With Eimeria Miyairii After Immunization, E. R. Becker, Phoebe R. Hall Jan 1933

Reinfection Of Rats With Eimeria Miyairii After Immunization, E. R. Becker, Phoebe R. Hall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was shown in previous paper (1932) that rats which had not previously been infected became immune to Einzcria. miya.irii after recovery from an infection produced by ingesting 1500 oocysts daily for five days. It was also stated that in the passing of the weeks some of the immunity was lost. The latter statement was based upon an experiment with four rats which showed the last coccidia on September 25, 1931, and which could not be reinfected immediately, but which again became infected after ingesting large numbers of oocysts on December 12, 1931, - about 78 days after the last …

Nasal Resonance In Speech Sounds, Joseph P. Kelly Jan 1933

Nasal Resonance In Speech Sounds, Joseph P. Kelly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A special phonophotographic camera makes possible the photographing of nasal resonance together with a time line. On the basis of these photographs, it is shown that each vowel has a specific nasal element in its resonance, the duration of which varies directly with the closeness of the vowel. It is shown further that the duration of nasal resonance in vowels phonated by individuals with badly nasal voices is greater than in vowels phonated by those having superior voices.

Perennial Sow Thistle (Sonchus Arvensis L.) In Iowa, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Perennial sow thistle (Sonchus arvensis L.) has wide geographical distribution. It occurs throughout Europe to 70° 35' North, in Siberia, Caucausus and lower Asia to Afghanistan. It is naturalized in India, Ceylon, Japan, North Africa, Australia and New America. Perennial sow thistle thrives in cultivated and uncultivated ground and in a wide range of soils. Its seeds have a high percentage of germination, without requiring a rest period. The plant may be propagated from cuttings of the root less than half an inch long as well as from the short upright rootstocks. The flowers are perfect; in seven days after …

Some Properties Of Vitamin E Concentrates, H. S, Olcott Jan 1933

Some Properties Of Vitamin E Concentrates, H. S, Olcott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Preparations of vitamin E were obtained from lettuce and from wheat germ oil by fractional crystallizations of the unsaponifiable lipids. Still further concentrated fractions were obtained from the lettuce unsaponifiable lipids by fractional distillation in vacuo. The fraction collected from 190-220° (0.1 mm.) was the most active. After the removal of traces of sterols and other solid alcohols by crystallization from acetone, 10 mg. were sufficient, when fed to a female rat deficient in vitamin E, to allow the birth of a normal litter. Concentrates so obtained were resin-like material which would not crystallize. Some of the physical and chemical …

A Short Study Of Barkhausen-Kurz Oscillators, L. F. Dytrt Jan 1933

A Short Study Of Barkhausen-Kurz Oscillators, L. F. Dytrt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the field of ultra-short waves as used in radio communications, oscillators of the Barkhausen-Kurz type should play an important part. The wave-length of these is dependent on the potentials applied to the grid and plate, and on the magnitude of the filament current, and is only influenced to a small degree by the leads connected to the grid and plate electrodes. Since the oscillations are caused by a purely mechanical to and fro motion of electrons about the grid, they are somewhat weak. In order to study oscillators of this type, one was built in an attempt to confirm …

An Observational Study In A Playground Situation Of Differences In Artistic Personality At The Child Level, Mildred L. Dow Jan 1933

An Observational Study In A Playground Situation Of Differences In Artistic Personality At The Child Level, Mildred L. Dow

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The amount of activity and the type of play on playgrounds possessing equipment and on playgrounds lacking equipment were compared for six artistic and five non-artistic children, aged five to eight. Modifications were used of (1) the Barker technique of recording child's movements from place to place, and (2) the Goodenough technique of repeated short samples. The results indicate that artistic children differ primarily from the non-artistic in that they devote more time to play materials and are consequently less active physically and less social. Where play materials are absent the differences tend to disappear.

Influence Of Nitrogenous Compounds On The Respiratory Quotient Of Rhizobium, D. A. Anderson, R. H. Walker Jan 1933

Influence Of Nitrogenous Compounds On The Respiratory Quotient Of Rhizobium, D. A. Anderson, R. H. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using the Warburg micro-manometric technique, the influence of nitrogenous compounds on the respiratory activities of the legume root-nodule bacteria has been recently studied. It was observed in these studies that the form in which the nitrogen was supplied to the organisms greatly influenced the amount of oxygen which they consumed. The fact was apparent that the effect of the nitrogen source might be due either to a stimulation or depression of the respiration of the organisms or to a marked change in its respiratory quotient; i.e., the ratio of oxygen consumed to carbon dioxide produced, CO2/O2. In …

The Importance Of Soil Colloids To Soil Microorganisms, G. B. Killinger, F. B. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The significance of soil colloids with respect to microorganisms in the soil has received little attention by soils investigators. Results secured here indicate that the soil colloid is the principal habitat for both aerobes and anaerobes in the soil.

The Vapor Pressures And The Activity Coefficients Of Aqueous Solutions Of Perchloric Acid At 25°, J. N. Pearce, A. F. Nelson Jan 1933

The Vapor Pressures And The Activity Coefficients Of Aqueous Solutions Of Perchloric Acid At 25°, J. N. Pearce, A. F. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vapor pressures of aqueous solutions of perchloric acid have been measured at 25° for concentrations ranging from 0.1 m to 12.0 m. The activity of the water and the activity coefficients of the ions have been calculated and compared with those of hydrochloric acid for the same concentrations and at the same temperature. The free energy of transfer of both the solvent and the solute, and the partial molal volumes of both components have been calculated for each concentration. Deviations from Raoult's law have been discussed in terms of the attraction of water dipoles by the electrically charged ions.

The Potential Of The Silver-Silver Iodata Electrode At 25°, J. N. Pearce, Verda I. Wirth

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The electromotive force of a series of cells of the type: Hg, Hg2Cl2, KCl(m), KIO3 (m), AglO3, Ag, have been measured at 25°. By combination of these potentials with the potentials of the corresponding calomel electrodes, they find the most probable potential of the Ag, AgIO3 , IO3-(α = 1) electrode to be Eo 298 = 0.3569 volt.

The Occurrence Of Mottled Enamel In Iowa, Carl T. Ostrem, D. A. Greenwood, H. A. Wilhelm, Victor E. Nelson Jan 1933

The Occurrence Of Mottled Enamel In Iowa, Carl T. Ostrem, D. A. Greenwood, H. A. Wilhelm, Victor E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mottled enamel is a peculiar condition of the teeth. The teeth become chalky white in appearance and lack the lustre and translucency observed in the enamel of normal teeth. They are generally stained in an irregular manner and the dark brown stain supposedly accumulates between the enamel rods. However, some individuals have severe mottling of the enamel with little or no stain. We do not know the nature of the substance responsible for the stain. The teeth become soft and the dentist experiences difficulty with the teeth retaining fillings. It is not known for certain if mottled teeth decay more …

The Preparation Of Dibromoamine And Its Reaction With Grignard Reagents, George H. Coleman, Charles B. Yager, Harold Soroos Jan 1933

The Preparation Of Dibromoamine And Its Reaction With Grignard Reagents, George H. Coleman, Charles B. Yager, Harold Soroos

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dibromoamine was prepared by passing dry ammonia into a cold ethereal solution of bromine. The reaction may be represented by the equation: 3 NH3 + 2 Br2 → NHBr2 + 2 NH4Br. A study of the decomposition rates of the dibromoamine solution at 0° and -72° shows that the product decomposes very rapidly at 0°, but it is relatively stable at the lower temperature. Dibromoamine reacts with Grignard reagents to produce primary amines, secondary amines, ammonia, and nitrogen. The percentage yields of these products obtained in two typical reactions were as follows: for n-butyl magnesium …

Discrimination Of Relatively Pure Spectral Colors By Normal And Color-Blind Subjects, A. A. Benedict Jan 1933

Discrimination Of Relatively Pure Spectral Colors By Normal And Color-Blind Subjects, A. A. Benedict

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various methods for testing color blindness have been devised. In many of the tests commonly used, the light that reaches the retina of the subject's eye is reflected from bodies in which selective reflection and absorption of the pigments determine the wave lengths acting as a stimulus. It was thought worthwhile to try a series of tests in which narrow bands of relatively pure spectral colors were viewed directly. The apparatus for this purpose consisted of a constant deviation wave length spectrometer and a polarization spectrophotometer using the Brace prism. In addition to the test mentioned above, which was given …

Resistivity Of Mosaic Zinc Crystals, W. J. Poppy Jan 1933

Resistivity Of Mosaic Zinc Crystals, W. J. Poppy

Factors Which Influence Visibility In Daylight And Under Artificial Illumination, Alvhh R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study is part of an investigation sponsored by the National Research Council to ascertain the optimal colors; back-ground-legend combinations; and spacings of letters, numbers, or words of stimuli used in directing and controlling automotive traffic. One hundred and twenty-three license plates of the states and territories were subjected to analysis for ascertaining the factors involved. Later the colors of the plates were analyzed by a Razek-Mülder color analyzer for wave length as well as reflection factor of the colors.

Eye Movements Of Good Readers, Robert Y. Walker Jan 1933

Eye Movements Of Good Readers, Robert Y. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Simultaneous binocular records of the vertical and horizontal eye-movements were obtained by photographic technique for fifty students ranking in the top decile in the Iowa Silent Reading Test and the University of Iowa Qualifying Examination. Norms of seven measures of eye-movements were established on reading material moderate in difficulty and requirement of comprehension. Varying difficulties of reading material and requirements of comprehension gave significant differences in eye-movements for duration of fixation, size of fixation, and rate of reading; mode of duration and extent of forward shift remained fairly constant.

A Laboratory Investigation Of Problem Solving In Plane Geometry, Lyle K. Henry Jan 1933

A Laboratory Investigation Of Problem Solving In Plane Geometry, Lyle K. Henry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In investigating the mental processes involved in geometry problem solving the present study attempted to eliminate some of the inadequacies of paper and pencil analyses by the following procedure: 1. The stimuli were arranged according to increasing degrees of elaboration and presented to subjects, individually, through an exposure apparatus for a timed interval. 2. The subject expressed his ideas verbally, as they occurred, and these were recorded by a microphone-dictaphone unit. 3. The meanings of the responses were ascertained by cross reference and by use of a controlled set of questions. The data obtained throw light on the status of …

A Preliminary Report Of A New Departure In Mental Measurements And Some Of Its Practical Applications, D. D. Feder Jan 1933

A Preliminary Report Of A New Departure In Mental Measurements And Some Of Its Practical Applications, D. D. Feder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The field of mental measurements has been dominated by a theory sterile in its contributions to systematized psychology. Moreover, most traditional types of objective examinations do not adequately test anything more than amount of discrete information compiled. This technique goes beyond mere information, getting into the subtler intricacies of human thought and the functional aspects of intelligence. A definite theoretical psychological basis underlies this approach, and it is believed that important contributions to general theory can result from this type of experimentation. Future use in the individualization of instruction at the rate and level of the student's ability is described.
