The Application Of Psychological Classification Of Changes Effected Through Learning To Problems Of Curriculum Construction, R. H. Ojemann Jan 1933

The Application Of Psychological Classification Of Changes Effected Through Learning To Problems Of Curriculum Construction, R. H. Ojemann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Descriptions of the objectives of education have varied from general, all-inclusive statements, to extended lists of details. The inadequacy of general statements has been recognized by curriculum makers and several attempts have been made to develop more detailed classifications. The best-known classifications have used a mixture of general and specific abilities, or of general and specific activities.

Boron-Iron Relationships In The Growth Of Tomato, W. E. Loomis, J. J. Wilson Jan 1933

Boron-Iron Relationships In The Growth Of Tomato, W. E. Loomis, J. J. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

7. Boron-iron relationships

The work of Sommer and Lipman and of Johnston and Dore indicates that boron is required for the growth of plants representing eight families. Their results suggest that boron in small quantities may be an essential element for all plants. Before such a conclusion can be fully established it will, of course, be necessary to grow all plant species under the exacting conditions required for the elimination of boron from the culture medium. In the meantime any data which indicate that boron has a specific and indispensable function in the growth of any plant should be of …

Archaeological Finds In Northeastern Utah, Albert B. Reagan Jan 1933

Archaeological Finds In Northeastern Utah, Albert B. Reagan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The main centers of ancient occupation in this area, so far as investigations now show, are Ashley and Dry Fork Valleys and the Brush Creek-Greendale region, near Vernal, Nine Mile (Minnie Maud Creek) Canyon, east of Price, and Hill Canyon, forty miles south of Ouray (including some sites on Willow Creek and along Green River). The investigations also further show that four somewhat successive people have occupied the region, as follows.

On The Piezoelectric Properties Of Tourmaline, Morris Underwood Jan 1933

On The Piezoelectric Properties Of Tourmaline, Morris Underwood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oscillating piezoelectric plates of different frequencies have been made from California and South African tourmaline. These plates have a frequency response of approximately 3770 kc per millimeter of thickness. The temperature coefficient for both to be negative and is about 25.5 parts per million per degree centigrade for the African specimen and 28.1 parts per million per degree centigrade for the California crystal. Comparison of the tourmaline plates with a Y-cut quartz plate of the same size and frequency shows the tourmaline oscillators decidedly inferior on the basis of power output.

An Analysis Of Tone Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, Donald A. Rothschild Jan 1933

An Analysis Of Tone Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, Donald A. Rothschild

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sound waves from the instruments of the orchestra were phonophotographed, and by means of the Henrici Harmonic Analyzer the tone quality of each instrument was determined. Three notes covering the range of their registers, were taken of the wind instruments. An intensive series was taken from the string instruments to determine some of the differences in quality due to use of the mute, varied pressure in bowing, differences in fingering, and differences in structure of the instrument.

The Progessive And Step-Wise Decarboxylation Of Furan-Tetracarboxlic Acid, Henry Gilman, Harold Oatfield, Willard H. Kirkpatrick Jan 1933

The Progessive And Step-Wise Decarboxylation Of Furan-Tetracarboxlic Acid, Henry Gilman, Harold Oatfield, Willard H. Kirkpatrick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Tetra-ethyl furantetracarboxylate is readily prepared by the condensation of oxalacetic ester. The corresponding furantetracarboxylic acid can be progressively decarboxylated. Two of the interesting products of decarboxylation are 3, 4-furandicarboxylic acid and 3-furoic acid. The 3, 4-furandicarboxylic acid is interesting not only for purposes of absolute orientation (it completes the series of furandicarboxylic acids) but also because it gives unequivocal evidence for the constitution of a series of 2-nitrofurans. It now appears that this method of stripping carboxyl groups is the best now available for the synthesis of 3-furoic acid, which otherwise is prepared with considerable difficulty.

Conidial Production In The Genus Cercospora, C. M. Nagel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the limiting factors in the study of the biology of several species of the genus Cercospora has been the failure of investigators to obtain conidia abundantly and at will in pure culture.

Some Reactions Of Diphenyletyleneimine And Attempts To Prepare Aminoethenes, George H. Coleman, G. P. Waugh Jan 1933

Some Reactions Of Diphenyletyleneimine And Attempts To Prepare Aminoethenes, George H. Coleman, G. P. Waugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Ozone had no effect on diphenylethyleneimine. The benzoyl derivative was prepared in pyridine by the action of benzoyl chloride. In dilute sodium hydroxide the same reagent formed α-β-diphenyl-β-chloroethylamine. This compound was changed to benzoyl diphenylethyleneimine by heating with alcoholic sodium ethylate. On being heated to 225° diphenylethyleneimine rearranged to benzalbenzylamine. A number of experiments were tried in an attempt to prepare aminoethenes but the results were not conclusive.

Synchronization Of Action Current Waves From Homologous Muscle Groups During Reflex Activity, Mervin Patterson Jan 1933

Synchronization Of Action Current Waves From Homologous Muscle Groups During Reflex Activity, Mervin Patterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By means of two perfectly matched, non-interfering, amplifying-recording units, action currents were recorded simultaneously from two homologous muscles during reflex response. A common stimulus was used to elicit the reflex. The homologous muscles studied were the gastrocnemius, the quadriceps femoris, and the masseter in the human being. In all homologous pairs of muscles studied the action currents were practically the same for each member of the pair with respect to frequency, intensity, and wave form. These results show that homologous muscles have a common integrating center in reflex activity, and that neither the motor nerve nor the muscle masses alter …

A Study Of The Boiling Point Elevation In Solutions Of Potassium Iodine In Ethyl Alcohol, J. N. Pearce, M. L. Mcdowell Jan 1933

A Study Of The Boiling Point Elevation In Solutions Of Potassium Iodine In Ethyl Alcohol, J. N. Pearce, M. L. Mcdowell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study has been made of the elevation of the boiling point of ethyl alcohol by potassium iodide. A differential method has been employed and the temperature variations were measured by a sensitive thermoelement. The experimental boiling point elevation- molality curve has been found to follow very closely that of a normal undissociated solute, indicating only a slight degree of dissociation. From this data the activities and free energy relations are calculated.

Ionization Constants And Parachors Of Some Furan Compounds, Henry Gilman, Willard E. Catlin, Robert K. Davis Jan 1933

Ionization Constants And Parachors Of Some Furan Compounds, Henry Gilman, Willard E. Catlin, Robert K. Davis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The technical utilization of furfural and derivatives is dependent to a marked extent on the constitution of the furan nucleus, on rules governing orientation in nuclear substitution and on the relative negativity or super-aromaticity of furan when compared with aromatic types like benzene.

The Kansas City Formation In The Devil's Backbone Region, Madison County, Arthur Goshorn Jan 1933

The Kansas City Formation In The Devil's Backbone Region, Madison County, Arthur Goshorn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two beds of limestone, each 12-13 feet thick, above the DeKalb, are exposed in Gordon's Hollow, one mile north of the tunnel through the Devil's Backbone in Pammel Park. South of the tunnel about a mile, a heel of limestone 12-13 feet thick, above the DeKalb, is exposed at intervals close to the top of the bluff. Exact correlation of these beds may show that all members of the Kansas City are present in the Backbone region.

A Method Obtaining Absolute Values For X-Ray Energy Levels, John A. Eldridge Jan 1933

A Method Obtaining Absolute Values For X-Ray Energy Levels, John A. Eldridge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

X-ray absorption edges usually correspond to the removal of the orbital electron to some definite outer level, not to complete ionization. The difference between this state and the state of complete removal from the metal is not known. It is probably of the order of 25 volts. By measuring the energies of photoelectrons produced by known photons the energy levels can be definitely placed. The experiment suggested is a modification of the one recently described by Kretschman (Phys. Rev. Vol. 43, p. 417).

The Pattern Score In Scientific Study Of Music, Harold Seashore Jan 1933

The Pattern Score In Scientific Study Of Music, Harold Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The pattern score, developed in the psychology of music to express the facts pertinent to both music and psychology, is here demonstrated in its more complete form. There is presented a sample of a song graphed on the pattern score which coordinately records the melody curve, the intensity curve, sample timbre analysis, durational aspects, facts from the musical score and phonetic elements. In its standardized form the pattern score fulfills the requirement that the basic musical and scientific concepts must be presented visually in adequately coordinated relationships.

The Somatic Chromosomes Of Cypripedium Hirsutum And Six Species Of Habenaria, L. M. Humphrey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The chromosome numbers of eight species of the Orchidaceae were reported last year. The purpose of this paper is to report seven more species. The material was collected in Minnesota and Massachusetts. The following numbers were found: Cypripedium hirsutum, 2n = 20; Habenaria blephariglottis, 2n = 42; H. clavellata, 2n = 42; H. dilatata, 2n = 42; H. Hookeri, 2n = 42; H. hyperborea, 2n = 42; and H. obtusata, 2n = 42. The size relationships are the same as in the species studied last year. The Cypripedium has very large chromosomes, and the Habenarias relatively very small ones.

Determination Of Linear Coefficients Of Thermal Expansion Of Thin Samples By Optical Lever, John E. Gorham, George C. Higgins Jan 1933

Determination Of Linear Coefficients Of Thermal Expansion Of Thin Samples By Optical Lever, John E. Gorham, George C. Higgins

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to measure coefficients of thermal expansion of small samples varying from one to twenty millimeters in thickness an optical lever has been designed to allow detection of a change in thickness of the sample of plus or minus twenty Angstrom units. The dilatation is read in terms of the change of interference bands produced between two nearly parallel glass plates. A formula was developed which does away with continuous observation during the expansion. Through the use of this formula the accuracy of the result is comparable with that obtained by continuous observation. The samples do not have to …

The Influence Of Strong Electrolytes Upon The Rate Of Inversion Of Sucrose At 25°, J. N. Pearce, Margaret Thomas Jan 1933

The Influence Of Strong Electrolytes Upon The Rate Of Inversion Of Sucrose At 25°, J. N. Pearce, Margaret Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rate of inversion of sucrose by hydrochloric acid in some typical salt solutions was studied at 25°. In every case the molalities of the sucrose and of the acid were fixed at 0.1 m and 1.0 m, respectively; the concentration of the salts ranging from 0.05 m to 1.0 m. For each salt the inversion coefficient varies rectilinearly with the molality. The order of decreasing influence upon the coefficient is BaCl2 , NaCl, KCl. The order is exactly reversed when considered with respect to ionic strength. The velocity is decreased by potassium sulfate, due to the formation of …

Some Galvanic Responses Of Psychopathic Individuals, D. U. Greenwald Jan 1933

Some Galvanic Responses Of Psychopathic Individuals, D. U. Greenwald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study grew out of one previously made in the laboratories of the State University of Iowa in regard to the effect of motion pictures upon children as measured by their galvanic responses. A similar technique was applied to psychopathic individuals of the general classes, schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, organic disorder, and psychoneurosis. Records were taken on an improved form of the Wechsler psychogalvanograph which permitted the recording of the total responses over a period of time. The stimulus was of the continuous type, being a motion picture lasting one-half hour. Fifty individuals, representing many variations of personality under the above …

A Critical Analysis Of Reading Test Scores, Francis P. Robinson, Frieda H. Mccollom Jan 1933

A Critical Analysis Of Reading Test Scores, Francis P. Robinson, Frieda H. Mccollom

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since most reading tests have time limits, their scores are clue both to comprehensive ability and to speed of reading. In this experiment a time limit test and a no time limit test are analyzed to determine the relative importance of each of these variables. Although the usual clinician or teacher uses a reading test score primarily as a measure of comprehensive ability, a critical analysis indicates that speed of reading determines these scores more than comprehensive ability. The length of the test as a fatigue factor was also found to determine the type of reading a person does.

A Preliminary Study Of The Reaction Of Two Disease Resistant Stocks Of Chickens After Infection With Their Reciprocal Pathogens, W. V. Lambert Jan 1933

A Preliminary Study Of The Reaction Of Two Disease Resistant Stocks Of Chickens After Infection With Their Reciprocal Pathogens, W. V. Lambert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In another publication the writer pointed out that five generations of selection for resistance to fowl typhoid in the chicken resulted in a decided decrease in the mortality of the selected stocks. Specifically, the effect of the selection was to decrease the mortality from approximately 85 percent in the unselected parental stock to slightly more than 10 percent in the fifth selected generation.
