A Simple Method For The Germination Of Pollen Maize And Potato (Abstract), R. A. Bair, W. E. Loomis Jan 1941

A Simple Method For The Germination Of Pollen Maize And Potato (Abstract), R. A. Bair, W. E. Loomis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In connection with studies of the effect of ecological factors on pollination and yield of maize, a reliable method for rapidly evaluating the viability of pollen has been developed. With both maize and potato pollen as high as 90 percent germination has been secured within 30 minutes after inoculation on a nutrient solution containing only agar, cane sugar and water. The growth of the tubes begins within ten minutes, is sufficiently rapid to be plainly visible under the microscope, and may continue until a tube length fifty times the diameter of the pollen grains is reached. Protoplasmic streaming is strikingly …

A Preliminary Report On The Developmental Anatomy Of Red Clover, Trifolium Pratense L. (Abstract), H. J. Romm Jan 1941

A Preliminary Report On The Developmental Anatomy Of Red Clover, Trifolium Pratense L. (Abstract), H. J. Romm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The investigations include the anatomy of several strains of red clover grown in the Corn Belt. The seed coat is of the typical legume type consisting of palisade, osteosclerid, and nutritive layers. There is a well-defined light line across the palisade cells. The embryo is enclosed in endosperm consisting of two layers of cells. The endosperm swells and becomes gelatinous in water. The embryo consists of hypocotyl, cotyledons, plumular meristem and buds in the axils of the cotyledons. The hypocotyl elongates in the seedling stage, elevating the cotyledons an inch or more; later the hypocotyl contracts, and in conjunction with …

Observations Of The Leaves Of Arborescent Lycopods From The Pennsylvanian Rocks Of Iowa (Abstract), L. R. Wilson, Iola Tillepaugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the coal balls of the Des Moines Series (Pennsylvanian System) many arborescent Lycopod leaves arc preserved. A number of these have been investigated anatomically in serial nitrocellulose peels and in thin rock sections. The anatomy and abundance are discussed in the paper.

Effect Of Added Salts On Solubility Of Hippuric Acid In Urine (Abstract), T. U. Marron Jan 1941

Effect Of Added Salts On Solubility Of Hippuric Acid In Urine (Abstract), T. U. Marron

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Solubility data are presented for the effect of added salts on the precipitation of hippuric acid from urine in quick liver function tests. Calculations appearing in the literature are inaccurate because they apply to varying solubility conditions. The effect of added salts is to standardize these conditions and give accurate calculations.

Durability Test On Iowa Limestones And Dolomites, Lyman W. Wood Jan 1941

Durability Test On Iowa Limestones And Dolomites, Lyman W. Wood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to summarize recent durability investigations of Iowa limestones and dolomites by the Iowa State Highway Commission, and to relate these investigations to the more general subject of the durability of Portland cement concrete. A subject as broad as the title indicates can be presented only very briefly at this time. The evidence discussed is for the most part from the Highway Commission records, supplemented by information from other sources including the Iowa Geological Survey publications and files. Acknowledgement is made to Bert Myers, Engineer of Materials and Tests, and to other employees of the …

On The Independence Of Operators On A Lattice, Frank Haight Jan 1941

On The Independence Of Operators On A Lattice, Frank Haight

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The operators under consideration will be formed from nine basic first order operators. These will, in their turn, be formed by combining in several ways one of their number, an undefined operator of 'derivation'.

A Preliminary Study Of The Visual Field In Athletics, Robert Hobson, M. T. Henderson Jan 1941

A Preliminary Study Of The Visual Field In Athletics, Robert Hobson, M. T. Henderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

If a basketball player sees an area half as large as another player, he has less chance of sizing up the entire situation on the floor at any moment. Likewise, if one player secs less at a given time than he did previously or will in the future, he is probably less effective at that given time. This study attempts first to discover whether or not there is a reason to suspect a measurable relationship between the size of the visual field and successful basketball playing. If there is, obviously a test of visual fields would be advantageous to a …

Observation Of Colonial Peritrichs (Ciliata; Protoza) Of The Okoboji Region, Everett L. Bishop Jr., Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1941

Observation Of Colonial Peritrichs (Ciliata; Protoza) Of The Okoboji Region, Everett L. Bishop Jr., Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The family Epistylidae includes those peritrichous ciliates with non-contractile stalks, either solitary or forming large colonies with dichotomous stalks; the individuals are cylindrical, inverted bell-shape, or ovoid. The organisms are attached to aquatic animals, and occasionally to plants. The most recent and complete key to this family is that of Kahl (1935). The majority of species described in this paper are found attached to the carapace and plastron of Chrysemys marginata bellii (Western Painted Turtle). These species may be found also on the Snapping Turtle, or, rarely, attached to some of the filamentous algae on these animals. Other hosts for …

Carcinogenic Hydrocarbon Effect On Rat Liver In Vitamin A (Abstract), T. U. Marron Jan 1941

Carcinogenic Hydrocarbon Effect On Rat Liver In Vitamin A (Abstract), T. U. Marron

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The depleting effect of methycholanthrene on rat liver vitamin A stores was studied by use of the antimony trichloride method. Phenanthrene injected rats served as controls for the carcinogenic agent. The results were checked on a later series of animals by the use of fluorescent microscopy for the deletion of vitamin A in the tissue.

Standards For Research In Personality (Abstract), Edward Rice, R. H. Sylvester Jan 1941

Standards For Research In Personality (Abstract), Edward Rice, R. H. Sylvester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Vivid word pictures of personalities have ever been portrayed in biographies and character studies. But until the present half century, no standards had been established for analyses, evaluations or comparisons. Bases for present endeavors in those lines were laid in the nineties by pioneers in general psychology. Progress was accelerated by the maturation of methods of mental measurement from 1908 to 1927. Since the latter date, research men in personality have advanced largely by means of methods developed within their own field. Present tentative standards come from the following sources: (I) Imitations of proved methods of mental measurement. (2) Fulcra, …

The Earliest Known Epiphytotic Of Rust In Iowa, Maria A. Corkle, I. E. Melhus Jan 1941

The Earliest Known Epiphytotic Of Rust In Iowa, Maria A. Corkle, I. E. Melhus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to a rust epiphytotic in l 858, which apparently has been overlooked in the study of plant disease prevalence in Iowa. Early Iowa agricultural records and newspapers contain numerous reports of the calamitous wheat and oat failures caused by rust in 1858, yet this rust year has not been reported in any scientific publication from Iowa. Miss Hamilton2, who summarized material regarding a rust epiphytotic that occurred in 1878 in southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and Wisconsin, likewise makes no mention of the epiphytotic of 1858.

Relation Of The Structure Of Sugars To Their Dissimilation In The Butyl-Acetonic Fermentation, James F. Guymon, L. A. Underkofler, Ellis I. Fulmer Jan 1941

Relation Of The Structure Of Sugars To Their Dissimilation In The Butyl-Acetonic Fermentation, James F. Guymon, L. A. Underkofler, Ellis I. Fulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The dissimilation of starch in corn mash by Clostridium acetobutylicum produces butanol, acetone and ethanol, commonly called "solvents"', in the approximate ratio of 60:80:10, respectively. Although corn mash is the usual substrate, fermentations of certain pure carbohydrates by Cl. acetobutylicum have been investigated previously to some extent. The studies of various workers (3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12) have shown that a considerable number of sugars are fermented by the butyl organism in semi-synthetic media. The sugar fermentations are somewhat slower than for corn mash, and the final acidities arc somewhat higher with yields of neutral products correspondingly …

The Developement Of An Educational Program In Iowa State Parks, I. E. Melhus, J. L. Fults, Elizabeth A. White Jan 1941

The Developement Of An Educational Program In Iowa State Parks, I. E. Melhus, J. L. Fults, Elizabeth A. White

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first state park was created in 1918; consequently the state park educational program is of recent development. Although the educational program and the development of a park system by the state is relatively new, the idea of state-owned lands for recreational purposes is almost as old as our statehood. T. S. Parvin, registrar of lands back in the fifties, advocated in one of his reports that the state should buy a large tract of land in Des Moines to preserve the statehouse ground, for in time the state would need it for recreational purposes. It is evident now that …

Motion Of The Wisconsin Ice In Story County, Iowa, Charles S. Gwynne Jan 1941

Motion Of The Wisconsin Ice In Story County, Iowa, Charles S. Gwynne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent inspection of airplane photograph maps of the area of the Wisconsin drift in Iowa discloses the presence of a pattern of narrow discontinuous bands in many parts. The entire map area is being studied in some detail but the pattern for Story County may now be described and some conclusions drawn. The bands are formed by alternating light and dark streaks, (Fig. 1). Each streak is only a fraction of a mile in width, so that there may be as many as thirty of them in a mile. The light and dark streaks are not continuous for any great …

Interpretation Of Variation Of Partial Moral Volume Of Solute With Aqueous Solutions Of Strong Electrolytes (Abstract), G. W. Stewart Jan 1941

Interpretation Of Variation Of Partial Moral Volume Of Solute With Aqueous Solutions Of Strong Electrolytes (Abstract), G. W. Stewart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One view is that the variation in the partial molal volume of water is produced by a change in its structure from a four-coordinated to a higher one. This view receives corroboration from experiments with the x-ray diffraction pattern of aqueous ionic solutions of thirty-one strong electrolytes. The results show a correspondence between the rate of variation of (1) the partial molal volume with concentration of the electrolyte; and (2) the liquid structure of the water also with concentration.

Ocular Patterns As Indices Of Intellectual Acheivement, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1941

Ocular Patterns As Indices Of Intellectual Acheivement, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to evaluate, by means of ocular photography, the indices of the learning process. Since the mind is known by behavior of some kind, it would seem logical to assume a study of the characteristic behavior of the human eye would reveal some of the mental processes involved. If attention, retention, reason and reproduction are different phases of the learning process, it is likely that the analysis of ocular patterns would provide a valuable technique to evaluate such mental content. This study is an attempt to evaluate: 1. The relative time spent on respective symbols …

A Neutral Sizing Material For Insulating Board (Abstract), L. K. Arnold, J. B. Mcleod Jan 1941

A Neutral Sizing Material For Insulating Board (Abstract), L. K. Arnold, J. B. Mcleod

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The usual sizing materials for paper and board are acid in reaction and interfere with certain chemicals useful for flame proofing. A wax sizing material precipitated by the action of calcium chloride produced excellent water resistance in insulating board and did not interfere with the flame proofing chemicals.

Construction Of The New Pressure-Insulated Electrostatic Generator At The State University Of Iowa (Abstract), A. Ellett, G. J. Plain Jan 1941

Construction Of The New Pressure-Insulated Electrostatic Generator At The State University Of Iowa (Abstract), A. Ellett, G. J. Plain

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The electrostatic generator will be housed in a new underground laboratory connected to the physics building by a tunnel. Since last fall work has been proceeding on the construction of the generator inside of the 2½' by 50' steel tank. This pressure vessel will allow operation of the generator at pressures up to 8 atmospheres absolute. An intermediate electrode has been introduced. Two cotton fabric woven-endless belts with a linear speed of about 5,000' per minute will charge the high potential electrode. The 22' accelerating tube is being constructed of short porcelain sections with steel spinnings serving as accelerating electrodes.

An Open-Air Ionization Chamber Roentgen Meter For Routine Measurements Of X-Ray Intensities (Abstract), L. E. Pinney Jan 1941

An Open-Air Ionization Chamber Roentgen Meter For Routine Measurements Of X-Ray Intensities (Abstract), L. E. Pinney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The meter is an adaptation of developments by L. S. Taylor at the U. S. Bureau of Standards. In working out this design, special attention has been given to convenience of operation. Certain modifications have been found necessary where the instrument is to be used with X-ray sources of very high intensity.

Retroactive Inhibition As A Function Of The Relative Serial Positions Of The Original And Interpolated Items, Arthur L. Irion Jan 1941

Retroactive Inhibition As A Function Of The Relative Serial Positions Of The Original And Interpolated Items, Arthur L. Irion

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The importance of retroactive inhibition as one of the major theoretical conditions of forgetting makes experimentation on it particularly important at this time. Retroactive inhibition may be defined as the decrement in an originally learned act attributable to the learning of a second act between the time of the original learning and its recall. More rigidly than this, retroactive inhibition may be defined in terms of the experimental operations, the experimental design employed in the production of it.

Implementing Recall, H. J. Haverkamp Jan 1941

Implementing Recall, H. J. Haverkamp

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The use of tests as schoolroom aids to learning has long been advocated. The conditions under which these benefits accrue have not, however, been fully explored. This paper is a summary of one of several recent studies at the University of Iowa which have sought information on this problem. An attempt was made, in the investigation reported below, to compare the effectiveness of a reading and a rereading of factual material with that of a reading and a completion test response. Specifically, three learning conditions were compared: (1) the reading of a selection of factual material followed by the taking …

An Empirical Study Of Compensation, A. R. Lauer, Lualis Uthoff Jan 1941

An Empirical Study Of Compensation, A. R. Lauer, Lualis Uthoff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Textbooks, which have tended to include psychoanalytic concepts, have used the term compensation more or less vaguely. Most authors refer to compensation only suggestively, while others, two in particular, Morgan (1) and Groves (2), have delved extensively into the problem. These writers, however, present rather elaborate expositions on the concept of compensation, but give practically no experimental data on the problems related to it. A review of the literature (3) shows no significant experimental data existing on the problem. It seems that most sources of information are to be traced directly to the Freudian exponents and are mostly of a …

Late Fall And Winter Bird Records, 1938 To 1941, In The Sioux City Area, Jean Laffoon Jan 1941

Late Fall And Winter Bird Records, 1938 To 1941, In The Sioux City Area, Jean Laffoon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is a continuation of a series of winter bird lists of Sioux City and the surrounding territory. The series was started by T. C. Stephens in 1916. Dr. Stephens covered the six winters from 1916 to 1922 in four papers1. Charles J. Spiker wrote a paper listing the records of the four winters from 1922 to 19262; William Youngworth, the four winters from 1926 to 19303; and Wilfred D. Crabb, the eight winters from 1930 to 19384. The present paper records the observations of the last three winters, 1938 to …

Theoretical Genetics - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, E. W. Timm Jan 1941

Theoretical Genetics - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, E. W. Timm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first task of genetics was to determine the laws which govern the transmission of characters from parent to offspring and to locate the material basis for this regular behavior. The task was quickly accomplished so that 20 years ago the gene-chromosome theory of heredity was well established; it has since been the ABC of genetics and provides the framework upon which more recent work rests. The substance of the theory, as you will recall, is that the characters observed in an adult individual are determined by genes which are arranged in a linear order in the chromosomes.

Additions To The Flora Of Mahaska Country, Iowa, D. W. Augustine Jan 1941

Additions To The Flora Of Mahaska Country, Iowa, D. W. Augustine

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the initial collections in the county for the first survey made in 1938, a few more plants which are residents of the locality have been discovered. In addition the work of other earlier investigators in the flora of the region have revealed a few species of plants which were not recorded in the original review. It is the purpose of this work to record these additions and make the floristic list more complete.
