Application Of The Group Conference Method Of Teaching To Beginning Classes In Plant Pathology, I. E. Melhus, G. C. Kent Jan 1943

Application Of The Group Conference Method Of Teaching To Beginning Classes In Plant Pathology, I. E. Melhus, G. C. Kent

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The teacher's ability to stimulate and to work with each student largely determines the value derived from a course by the student. The contact of teacher with the individual student is more difficult to effect in large classes (50 students or more) than in small classes. In the large classes a restraint and formality may prevail that are lacking in groups of 20 students or fewer.

A Basin Method Of Nut Tree Culture, J. M. Aikman, C. C. Lounsberry Jan 1943

A Basin Method Of Nut Tree Culture, J. M. Aikman, C. C. Lounsberry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nut tree culture in Iowa is confined almost entirely too selected and grafted varieties of the black walnut, Juglan nigra L. This tree is one of the dominants of the Elm-Ash-Walnut Associes of the Deciduous Forest Formation of eastern United States. Its native habitat is the upper flood-plains of rivers, creeks and even intermittent streams. In spite of the fact that Iowa is near the western limit of its range, the walnut thrives in the rich alluvial soil of well drained but moist floodplains throughout the state and attains a size almost as great as it does farther east near …

Additions And Notes To The Bryophyte Flora Of Linn County, Iowa, R, V. Drexler Jan 1943

Additions And Notes To The Bryophyte Flora Of Linn County, Iowa, R, V. Drexler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the spring of 1942 numerous collections of bryophytes in the vicinity of Cedar Rapids have added several interesting and rare species to the known flora of Linn County. Most of these species are rather infrequent in the remainder of the state. From the vantage point gained with but a few years of collecting it can be said that forests and swamps on Lindley fine sand and fine sandy loam seem to be the most favorable bryophyte habitats at this time. Prairie bogs and the moist, rock-strewn, forested ravines at the Palisades State Park are also excellent collecting areas. Perhaps …

Comparison Of Dominant Prairie Grasses As Interplanting Ground Covers On Eroded Soil, J. M. Aikman, Robert E. Mcdermott Jan 1943

Comparison Of Dominant Prairie Grasses As Interplanting Ground Covers On Eroded Soil, J. M. Aikman, Robert E. Mcdermott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experiments were initiated in 1938 for the purpose of studying vegetative ground covers. This series of investigations was undertaken as the basis for studies in the integration of herbaceous and woody plants which constitute an important phase of the research in progress at the Floris Field Station of the Iowa Cooperative Hillculture Project. The herbaceous plants used at the station in these studies of integration with woody plants may be classified in three groups: natural weed covers, legumes and grasses.

Two Notable Plant Hybrids From Alaska, J. P. Anderson Jan 1943

Two Notable Plant Hybrids From Alaska, J. P. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hybrids are known to occur in nature, but they are generally between closely related species and give rise to fertile offspring which often make the taxonomy of the group difficult. Natural hybrids that give rise to sterile forms are not so common. The purpose of this paper is to put on record two such hybrids observed in Alaska.

Illustrations Of The Fleshy Fungi Of Iowa V. The Pink-Spored Agarics, Joseph C. Gilman Jan 1943

Illustrations Of The Fleshy Fungi Of Iowa V. The Pink-Spored Agarics, Joseph C. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This series of illustrations of the fleshy fungi of Iowa was started in 1940 in the Iowa Academy of Science Proceedings. At that time the purple-brown-spored forms were treated. Later the white-spored (1941), black-spored agarics (1942), and the fleshy ascomycetes (1942) have been covered. In this contribution illustration is made of three species of pink-spored agarics, Volvaria bombycina, Entoloma griseum and Pluteus cervinus, and an interesting abnormal form of the last named species.

Thirty-Five Iowa Mosses, Henry S. Conard Jan 1943

Thirty-Five Iowa Mosses, Henry S. Conard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1938 "One Hundred Iowa Mosses" (1) were distributed to ten herbaria. In that distribution Number 4, "Anomodon viticulosus" was wrongly identified. The plant is Anomodon minor (Beauv.) Lindb., like the figure in Sullivant's Icones, pl. 74. Much more common in Iowa is a smaller form, everywhere on trees, distributed as No. 2. To avoid such confusion as I fell into, this form should probably be named and entered in the manuals. Number 44 "Fissidens viridulus" had better be referred to F. minutulus Sull., according to the Moss Flora of North America (3). Number 62 " …

The Effect Of The Great Drought Of 1934 On The Leaf Structure Of Certain Iowa Plants, F. M. Turrell, Margaret E. Turrell Jan 1943

The Effect Of The Great Drought Of 1934 On The Leaf Structure Of Certain Iowa Plants, F. M. Turrell, Margaret E. Turrell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By August, 1934, it was evident that the Middle West had been through the greatest drought in its recorded weather history. This drought, which began in June, 1933, was the driest twelve-month period ever recorded for Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and the Dakotas (Kincer, 1934b).

Germination Studies Of The Seeds Of Some Common Weeds, John N. Martin Jan 1943

Germination Studies Of The Seeds Of Some Common Weeds, John N. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The germination of the seeds of weeds and other plants that reseed themselves is noticeably periodic. In some species the grand period of germination closely follows the rise in temperature above freezing and the thawing of the soil in the spring while in other species germination is delayed till late spring or summer, and in the case of winter annuals the seeds germinate mainly in the fall.

The Use Of 2-Chlorophenoxyacetyl Chloride In The Preparation Of Mixed Diacyl Derivatives Of Ortho Aminophenols, Paul H. Bacher, L. Chas. Raiford Jan 1943

The Use Of 2-Chlorophenoxyacetyl Chloride In The Preparation Of Mixed Diacyl Derivatives Of Ortho Aminophenols, Paul H. Bacher, L. Chas. Raiford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Raiford and coworkers (1) have proved by a long series of experiments that when two acyl radicals, R-Ć=O and R'-Ć =O, are introduced into an ortho aminophenol only one mixed diacyl derivative can generally be obtained, regardless of the order of introduction of the radicals; and in this product the heavier and more acidic of these groups is usually found attached to nitrogen. To meet this requirement the migration of acyl from nitrogen to oxygen must occur in one of these reactions. If the acyls are R-Ć=O and R-0-Ć=O the latter is most frequently found on nitrogen.

Some Binary Systems With Acetamide, Ben H. Peterson Jan 1943

Some Binary Systems With Acetamide, Ben H. Peterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation was carried out with the aid of the Research Grant of the Iowa Academy of Science. The unusual solvent character of molten acetamide has been reported by Stafford1. As a solvent for inorganic salts it is very similar to water. The conductance of salts dissolved in acetamide closely resembles that of aqueous solutions2. Organic compounds with the exception of some aromatic hydrocarbons are very soluble in molten acetamide. The higher normal amides are quite similar in their solvent properties. In this investigation the freezing point-composition diagrams have .been determined for the binary systems, acetamide …

Simple Proof Of Wüllners Vapor Pressure Law, Le Roy D. Weld Jan 1943

Simple Proof Of Wüllners Vapor Pressure Law, Le Roy D. Weld

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is well known that the vapor pressure of a solvent liquid is lowered by dissolving a nonvolatile solute in it. The experiments of Wiillner (Pogg. Ann. 110, 56. 1860) indicated that if the solute is nonvolatile, nonelectrolytic, and without chemical action on the solvent, the vapor pressure of the solvent is lowered by an amount proportional to the concentration of the solute; concentration being in this case defined as the ratio of the mass of the solute to the mass of the whole solution, i.e., the mass fraction. Nearly thirty years after Wiillner's work, Raoult (Zeits. Phys. Chem. 2, …

The Attention Value Of Color Evaluated By Means Of Ocular Photography, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1943

The Attention Value Of Color Evaluated By Means Of Ocular Photography, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Innumerable research studies have been made to evaluate the intensity of color. The general consensus of opinion is that color has attentional advantages over black and white, and in order to gain and sustain attention a bit of chroma thrown in will generally solve the problem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate by means of ocular photography. The attensity of red as compared to black and white of a given field. Fifty subjects were selected at random to observe an exposure card, while their eye movements were photographed. Two advertisements, one in color and the other in black …

Myxoporidian Parasites From The Gills Of Some Fishes Of The Okoboji Region, Verne J. Rice, Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1943

Myxoporidian Parasites From The Gills Of Some Fishes Of The Okoboji Region, Verne J. Rice, Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Myxosporidia are protozoan parasites which infect various/ 7 lower groups of vertebrates, and which cause several serious epidemic diseases of fishes (Kudo, 1920, 1939). The purpose of the present papers is to describe some of the species of Myxosporidia which have been found parasitizing fishes of the Okoboji region. The present study includes only the Myxosporidia found on the gills. The internal organs were also examined, but the results of these examinations are reported in a separate paper (Otto and Jahn, 1943).

Internal Myxosporidian Infections Of Some Fishes Of The Okoboji Region, George R. Otto, Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1943

Internal Myxosporidian Infections Of Some Fishes Of The Okoboji Region, George R. Otto, Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Protozoa of the order Myxosporidia are primarily parasites of fishes, and no major group of fishes is entirely free from infection. Apparently most species of Myxosporidia do not produce serious pathological changes. However, some of the most destructive diseases of fish, such as the "wormy" halibut of the Pacific coast of North America; the "boil" disease of barbel in European waters; and the "twist" disease of salmonoid fish, are caused by myxosporidian infection. These infections are often fatal and sometimes occur in epidemic form. The life history of the myxosporidia has been discussed by Kudo (1920, 1939). The present paper …
