The Leaf Organization Of Hedera Helix, Robert B. Wylie Jan 1943

The Leaf Organization Of Hedera Helix, Robert B. Wylie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hedera helix L. is commonly grown in our area as an indoor ornamental plant and in milder climates it thrives outdoors. Its capacity to endure difficult conditions is well known and quite naturally it has been used extensively in teaching and research. Several studies have related to its leaf form and size under various conditions. Ursprung and Blum explored its osmotic values and their work was later summarized by Ursprung (1929). Watson's recent papers (1942 a., 1942 b) discussed certain, aspects of its leaf tissues. The present paper deals with general foliar organizati9n of this plant in comparison with mesomorphic …

A Statistical Study Of Four Mechanical Ability Tests, Justine Bates, Marjorie Wallace, Mack T. Henderson Jan 1943

A Statistical Study Of Four Mechanical Ability Tests, Justine Bates, Marjorie Wallace, Mack T. Henderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to determine the extent to which a series of mechanical ability tests were related, and to observe any sex differences in the test results.

Solving The Schroedinger Equation For A Coulomb Potential With Cut-Off, Gregory Wannier Jan 1943

Solving The Schroedinger Equation For A Coulomb Potential With Cut-Off, Gregory Wannier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of solving the Schroedinger equation for a cut off Coulomb potential, has some importance in certain calculations concerning the excited states of solids1. The problem has actually been solved numerically for a particular case by Tibbs2. Numerical methods are always very specialized and have to be repeated in every new case. It is the purpose of this note to call attention to the fact that such problems are often capable of analytic solution comprising most of the possible cases.

Schiaparelli's Shooting Stars, C. C. Wylie, James R. Naiden Jan 1943

Schiaparelli's Shooting Stars, C. C. Wylie, James R. Naiden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fundamental work on this translation was done by Miss Francis M. Svaldi, a student working on National Youth Administration funds. After Miss Svaldi's graduation, her work was revised and corrected by James R. Naiden, Special Research Assistant in Astronomy (now 1st Lieutenant Army Air Corps), working under the direction of C. C. Wylie, Professor of Astronomy. The pressure of war work, and the enlistment of Mr. Naiden in the Armed Forces, have made it impossible to smooth out the translation as planned. However, it has been thought best to publish it in its present form, since it is not …

Notes On Iowa Fungi. X, G. W. Martin Jan 1943

Notes On Iowa Fungi. X, G. W. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This distinctive species, first reported by Buller (Res. on Fungi 6: 178. "1938) from Manitoba and noted by him as having been observed, but not described, by Thaxter many years previously in Massachusetts, has since been recorded by Christenberry ( Jour. Elisha Mitchell Soc. 56: 349. 1940) from North Carolina. It has developed repeatedly on rabbit dung collected in various localities in and near Iowa City and placed in moist chambers and is probably common and widespread but confused with other species. The umbonate sporangium is distinctive.

Some Of The Available Hepatics And Their Location In The Vicinity Of Iowa State College, John N. Martin Jan 1943

Some Of The Available Hepatics And Their Location In The Vicinity Of Iowa State College, John N. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Within easy reach of practically all colleges and high schools of Iowa and all prairie states there is a wealth of little used biological material for botany and other biological courses. This situation is especially true with respect to the simpler plants as the algae, fungi, lichens, hepatics, or liverworts, mosses, the ferns, and the fern allies. For this neighborhood growing material, commonly if not generally, there is substituted preserved material from the laboratory shelf and bearing the label of some company foreign to the state.

A Problem In Air Navigation, H. P. Thielman Jan 1943

A Problem In Air Navigation, H. P. Thielman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The following problem is solved. A pilot is ordered to make a scouting flight around a base. His orders are to fly out from the base along a straight path, make a complete circle whose center is the base and return to the starting point. If a constant wind is blowing and the pilot has fuel for n hours of flight, what is the greatest distance and longest time the pilot can fly away from the base and still have enough fuel left to carry out his orders? The solution, which involves elliptic integrals, is brought to a usable practical …

A Preliminary List Of The Elateridea Of Iowa, Billy Owen, H. E. Jaques Jan 1943

A Preliminary List Of The Elateridea Of Iowa, Billy Owen, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Elateridae, or click beetles as they are commonly called, constitute a comparatively large family. Leng's catalog lists over 600 species for North America, north of Mexico. While a few of our adult Elaterids reach the length of nearly two inches, the majority of our common species would range around l/2 inch in length, and occasionally species are not over 1/10 inch long. They are elongate in form, tapering more or less at each end, thus somewhat resembling the Buprestidae but are more loosely jointed between the thorax and abdomen. Many are dull brown or blackish in color, and are …

The Labiatae Of Iowa, Louis Nelson Bass Jan 1943

The Labiatae Of Iowa, Louis Nelson Bass

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is the outcome of a careful study of the specimens of Labiatae in the herbarium of the State University of Iowa. The aim of this study is to provide a workable key to the genera and species, records of distribution, and up-to-date nomenclature for the Labiatae of Iowa. Fifty-nine species included in twenty-two genera are recorded for Iowa in the collection. Of the fifty-nine species studied fourteen are rare, ten infrequent, sixteen frequent and nineteen common. Detailed descriptions have been omitted except for the rare species and those which are not sufficiently described in the key for easy …

The Operational Solution Of A Linear Homogeneous Differential System, Fred Robertson Jan 1943

The Operational Solution Of A Linear Homogeneous Differential System, Fred Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An operator is a symbol for an operation upon a function called the object function. The result of the operation is called the resultant function. The basic operator of the differential calculus is the differential operator D and of the integral calculus it is the integral operator D-1.
