Temperature Changes In The Chick During The Course Of Fowl Typhoid, A. E. Bell Jan 1947

Temperature Changes In The Chick During The Course Of Fowl Typhoid, A. E. Bell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many diseases are characterized by the production of a fever in the infected host. Contrary to early beliefs a moderate fever is now thought to be one of the defense mechanisms used by the body to, combat some infections. High temperatures alone are enough to destroy some invading organisms. Carpenter and others (1933) showed that the causative organism in gonorrhea can be destroyed in vitro by temperatures such as those induced in artificial fever. Ellingson and Clark (1942) observed increasing phagocytosis with rising temperatures. Others have reported increased antibody production under the influence of fever.

Illustrations Of The Fleshy Fungi Of Iowa, Ix. Further Gasteromycetes, Joseph C. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In addition to the puff balls and stinkhorns reported on previously1,2 many other interesting fungi are found among the Gasteromycetes, a few of which it seemed proper to include in this series. They are certain earth-stars, the common birds'-nest fungi, a stalked puff ball and a curious form which throws its spore ball like a catapult. The earth-stars, all in the genus Geastrum, are peculiar in that the outer wall of the basidiocarp, consisting of three well-defined layers, splits into lobes which bend away from the inner wall, giving the mature structure the characteristic star-shaped appearance. They are not …

Distribution Of The Tropical Rat Flea (Xenopsylla Cheopis) In The Interior Of The United States, Elery R. Becker Jan 1947

Distribution Of The Tropical Rat Flea (Xenopsylla Cheopis) In The Interior Of The United States, Elery R. Becker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The addition of Xenopsylla cheopsis, proved vector of plague and endemic or murine typhus, to the known fauna of Iowa was made by Roudabush and Becker (1) in 1934. It was believed at the time to be the first collection of that flea in the interior of the United States, but there existed several previous records which, strangely enough, had been generally overlooked, principally because the reporters had not pointed out the implications of their findings, and because of their inclusion in official reports rather than in widely circulated journals. As was claimed by Roudabush (2) and as several new …

Some Historical Features Of Potato Stem Necrosis Associated With Actinomyces Scabies, W. J. Hooker, J. E. Sass Jan 1947

Some Historical Features Of Potato Stem Necrosis Associated With Actinomyces Scabies, W. J. Hooker, J. E. Sass

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Certain varieties of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) are extremely susceptible to the common scab disease caused by Actinomyces scabies (Thaxt.) Güssow, whereas the tubers of others are very resistant. The scab organism is also capable of parasitizing the stems, causing severe necrosis which may result in premature death of the plant. Varieties known to be resistant to tuber scab show considerable resistance to stem necrosis, whereas those susceptible to tuber scab are likewise susceptible to scab on the stems.

Twenty-Five More Mosses And Liverworts From Iowa, Henry S. Conard Jan 1947

Twenty-Five More Mosses And Liverworts From Iowa, Henry S. Conard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

On previous occasions I have reported the distribution of 135 Iowa mosses1 and 30 liverworts2 to each of ten herbaria. I am now distributing ten sets of mosses and liverworts to the same herbaria to which the former sets were sent. For number 6 (part), 7, 9, 14, 22, 24, and 25, I am indebted to Professor W. A. Anderson, Curator of the Herbarium, State University of Iowa. A list of mosses and liverworts of Iowa, with the counties in which they have been collected, complete to date of going to press, was presented in THE BRYOLOGIST, 48: …
