Note On The Culture Of Lychnis Embryos, Verona Devine Dec 1947

Note On The Culture Of Lychnis Embryos, Verona Devine

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The additional literature cited in two recent reviews by White (2, 3) indicates the growing interest in tissue culture since his original review (1) of the subject in 1931. Although embryo culture is not tissue culture in the true sense of the word, the approach to the problems and the technics employed, are so similar that White has summarized the literature on embryo culture, and all other studies approaching a true tissue culture, in these articles. The present study was begun in an attempt to obtain normal plants from immature Lychnis embryos dissected from developing seeds. Although immature embryos of …

Solvent Extraction Of Soybean Oil By Mixtures Of Trichloroethylene And Ethyl Alcohol, S. G. Measamer, O. R. Sweeney, L. K. Arnold Jan 1947

Solvent Extraction Of Soybean Oil By Mixtures Of Trichloroethylene And Ethyl Alcohol, S. G. Measamer, O. R. Sweeney, L. K. Arnold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various solvents have been used for extracting vegetable oils such as soybean oil. Certain petroleum fractions are widely used commercially. They have the advantage of low cost, but the disadvantage of being highly flammable and their vapors being explosive in a wide range of mixture with air. Certain of the chlorinated hydrocarbons are excellent solvents but have had only limited use because of high cost and lack of suitable processing methods and equipment. Process and equipment for the use of trichloroethylene, one of these chlorinated hydrocarbons, have been developed in Engineering Experiment Station Laboratory, Iowa State College. Trichloroethylene is a …

An Evaluation Of The Various Short Forms Of The Wechsler-Bellevue Test, Bertram Cohen, Ira M. Steisel Jan 1947

An Evaluation Of The Various Short Forms Of The Wechsler-Bellevue Test, Bertram Cohen, Ira M. Steisel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The need for a rapid and efficient method of estimating adult intellectual level on an individual examination basis has been felt with increasing urgency in the past few years. An instrument of this type should include, to as great an extent as possible, the statistical advantages of a well standardized individual test along with the advantage of administrative economy. A brief scale meeting these criteria should be useful as a clinical screening device. It should be of some service as a method of sifting out of a large group those individuals who should be given further examination. Such an instrument …

A Preliminary Analysis Of Attitudes Related To Driving, Donald W. Conover Jan 1947

A Preliminary Analysis Of Attitudes Related To Driving, Donald W. Conover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Educators, psychologists and sociologists are stressing the problem of attitudes in many recent writings and those interested in safety feel it is one of the most fruitful approaches to successful accident prevention. Before the effects of training can be ascertained measuring instruments must be perfected and standardized. A review of recent literature on safety reveals that writers frequently refer to the attitudes of drivers as factors considered important in relation to general driving ability (Stack and Siebrecht, 1945) (Hubert, 1940). For present purpose, an attitude has been defined as the "acceptance value of a belief". It follows from this definition …

Selection Of The Optimal Scoring Plan For The Fritz Test Of Cynicism, Charles O. Neidt Jan 1947

Selection Of The Optimal Scoring Plan For The Fritz Test Of Cynicism, Charles O. Neidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an investigation involving a measuring instrument made up of situations to which a subject reacts on a response scale, consideration must be given the arithmetic weight-values to be assigned to the various responses along the scale before scoring the test. The present investigation was undertaken to select a scoring plan, i.e., weight-values, for the response scale provided in the Fritz Test of Cynicism.

Notes On The Occurrence Of Conodonts In Iowa, Walter Youngquist Jan 1947

Notes On The Occurrence Of Conodonts In Iowa, Walter Youngquist

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Conodont faunas in Iowa have so far been described from only the Ordovician and Devonian. However, they are known to occur in the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian systems, and are also reported from the Silurian. A summary of the known stratigraphic and geographic occurrences of conodonts in Iowa is given, and the Lime Creek shale and the shales of the Mississippian are cited as having particularly worthwhile possibilities with regard to future conodont investigations.

Some Species Of Cyphella, Solenia, And Porothelium, Paul Lewis Lentz Jan 1947

Some Species Of Cyphella, Solenia, And Porothelium, Paul Lewis Lentz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Thelephoraceae includes those genera of the Agaricales characterized by an inferior hymenium which is essentially smooth, that is, not borne on the surface of spines, pores or lamellae. The majority of forms are resupinate or reflexed, but a few genera are pileate. These have smooth, inferior hymenia and therefore belong in the Thelephoraceae as that family has been traditionally undestood. The genera Cyphella, Solenia and Porothelium are included in these forms.

Linospora Gledistiae In Iowa, E. Robena Luck Jan 1947

Linospora Gledistiae In Iowa, E. Robena Luck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A foliage disease of Gleditsia triacanthos L., caused by a fungus that has been given a variety of names, is of wide distribution in the United States, occurring from the Atlantic seaboard to Nebraska and Texas ( 1) and will be found to occur wherever its host does. The conidial stage of the fungus has been long known as Melasmia hypophylla (B. & R.) Sacc. and appears to be restricted to the one host Gleditsia triancanthos L. The fungus was first noted in the vicinity of Iowa City about 1940, and appears to be becoming more common. The imperfect stage …

Introduction Of The Belgian Schipperke Dog Into The United States, Max. A. Beemblossom Jan 1947

Introduction Of The Belgian Schipperke Dog Into The United States, Max. A. Beemblossom

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Schipperke (pronounced Skipper-ke) is a small stubby, jet black dog which weighs about 12 to 20 pounds and stands to the mature height of 12 inches. Its small foxy head carries a pair of oval, dark brown eyes, which portray expression and inquisitiveness. Its nose is small and comes to a moderate stop. The fur covering its small erect ears, head and legs is smooth, but the abundant, dense, black fur which covers the rest of the body is coarse and harsh to the touch. At the front of the neck the hair forms a culotte or a cape-like …
