On Generalized Means, H. P. Thielman Jan 1949

On Generalized Means, H. P. Thielman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Every student of elementary mathematics is acquainted with the concepts of the arithmetic mean, the harmonic mean, and the geometric mean of sets of numbers. These concepts are also common mathematical tools used in the analysis of data in many applied sciences. It may not be so well known that there exist various types of means of which those mentioned above are very special cases. It is the object of this paper to give postulational definitions of the concept of means in general, and to derive certain relations between different kinds of means. In this connection it will also be …

Spontaneous Doubling Of The Chromosome Complement In Monoploid Sporophytes Of Maize, Sherret S. Chase Jan 1949

Spontaneous Doubling Of The Chromosome Complement In Monoploid Sporophytes Of Maize, Sherret S. Chase

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Monoploid plants of maize are of interest to the plant breeder as a possible source of homozygous lines; that is, for the production of the genetic equivalents of inbred lines. For this reason data concerning the reproductive success of these plants are of importance. One factor contributing to the fertility of monoploids is spontaneous doubling of the chromosome complement in occasional cells resulting in the production of diploid tissue sectors which involve the anthers and ovules.

Megagametophyte Development Of Scrophularia Lanceolata, William D. Creasy Jan 1949

Megagametophyte Development Of Scrophularia Lanceolata, William D. Creasy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is part of a general comparative anatomical study involving two species of the genus, Scrophularia; namely, S. marylandica L. and S. lanceolata Pursh. These plants were once included in the same species and called S. marylandica. They are at present regarded as two distinct species and a comparison of their anatomy and development may help verify this separation. The present study is concerned chiefly with S. lanceolata, with only passing reference to S. marylandica.

Hysteriales Of Iowa, Bernard Lowy Jan 1949

Hysteriales Of Iowa, Bernard Lowy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Hysteriales of Iowa were last reviewed by Seaver (13) in 1910. The present paper is an extension of that work and includes descriptions of genera and species not previously reported from the state. Seaver recognized four genera with seven species; this review increases the number to five genera with thirteen species.

What An Academy Can Do To Promote The Conservation Of Natural Resources, J. M. Aikman Jan 1949

What An Academy Can Do To Promote The Conservation Of Natural Resources, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Modern man is not a builder. On the contrary he is an exploiter. He depends on natural resources, directly or with minor adaptation and modification, for his material needs. Likewise, he draws upon natural resources for thousands of things in which he takes special delight: things he sees, hears, smells, tastes, touches and feels. All of these natural resources are being cut down, torn down, shot down, burned, plowed up, washed away, blown away, and generally wasted and destroyed. Conservation of natural resources is inconsistent with utilization or use by man. If we use them we no longer have them …

Science Changes Its Mind, W. H. Kadesch Jan 1949

Science Changes Its Mind, W. H. Kadesch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an interesting book bearing the title "Architects of Ideas" Trattner tells us that "in every age previous to our own there was supposed to exist a body of knowledge final and infallible. Frequently people thought of this knowledge as having been revealed directly from heaven. Embodied in rigid tradition and held sacred by all authorities, it was considered heresy to question any time-honored belief." The great development in human culture that Mees has called the Helix of History began somewhere in the eastern hemisphere five or six millennia ago. For many centuries advancement was slow. Succeeding turns of the …

Conservation Knowledge And Attitudes Of Iowa Academy Of Science Members, George D. Lovell Jan 1949

Conservation Knowledge And Attitudes Of Iowa Academy Of Science Members, George D. Lovell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Over a year ago I received a letter asking if I would serve on an advisory committee to the Academy committee on conservation. The gist of the letter was that Academy members outside the fields usually associated with conservation might be helpful to the regular committee in an advisory capacity. If the aim was to secure members who were woefully ignorant of the field of conservation, mine was a happy choice for membership on the advisory committee. I so informed the secretary and was accepted anyway, so at least my conscience was clear. I felt that at least I could …

The Social Responsibility Of Science Teachers, Wayne B. Denny Jan 1949

The Social Responsibility Of Science Teachers, Wayne B. Denny

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recently I was told by a psychologist - and he ought to know - that the primary factor governing the choice of a vocation by scientists, engineers, technicians, and even teachers of science, is their preference for working with and studying about things rather than people. It was his contention that men of science, with few exceptions, prefer the relative quiet of the laboratory and the science classroom to the give-and-take of the social and political arena; that they prefer the relatively non-controversial subject matter of the natural sciences to matters of social concern in which opinions, rather than demonstrated …

A Comparison Of The Flora Of Iowa With That Of Alaska And Yukon, J. P. Anderson Jan 1949

A Comparison Of The Flora Of Iowa With That Of Alaska And Yukon, J. P. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa may be taken as a good example of a midtemperate climate although the northern part approaches a cold temperate condition. This, too, is indicated by the flora, as northeast Iowa has a much larger number of species characteristic of the northern regions than southern Iowa. Iowa is a land of comparatively little relief, ranging from a little less than 500 ft. at Keokuk to a little more than 1600 ft. at some places on the northern border.

Notes On Grasses Collected In Alaska And Adjacent Canada, Robert G. Brown Jan 1949

Notes On Grasses Collected In Alaska And Adjacent Canada, Robert G. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the summer of 1946 a trip was made up the Alaska Highway by automobile. At this time the author undertook to make a collection and study of the grasses growing along the route. The following paper is an annotated list of these grasses. They were identified by the author and checked by Dr. J. P. Anderson, Botany Department, Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. The author has not attempted to make a complete survey of the vast territory included in the title. It is hoped to continue the collection of grasses of this region for a later and more extensive …

Considerations Involved In The Management Of Prairie Reserves, Ada Hayden, J. M. Aikman Jan 1949

Considerations Involved In The Management Of Prairie Reserves, Ada Hayden, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa is known as a prairie state yet native grassland is not generally recognized by Iowans, for the virgin prairie which originally covered five-sixths of the state has been largely removed by the mechanics of farming, and only the characteristic soil profile of the prairie remains to mark its boundaries. The few scattered tracts of prairie which still persist as parts of undivided estates have been the source of the two state-owned reserves. According to a projected plan of the state Conservation Commission others will be acquired, where possible, representing various soil associations and climatic variations.

A Method Of Determining Vein Length Per Unit Area In Grass Leaves, Robert C. Lommasson Jan 1949

A Method Of Determining Vein Length Per Unit Area In Grass Leaves, Robert C. Lommasson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various methods have been used to evaluate the vascularization of leaves. One method which has been widely used is based upon the vein length per unit area of the blade. Plymale and Wylie (1944) measured the total length of veins per unit area for a few species of woody dicots. This unit has been shown by the studies of Philpott (1947) to be a slightly less reliable expression of the vascularization of Ficus leaves than the intravascular interval, a term defined and used by Wylie (1939). Schuster (1908, 1910) measured the total length of veins per unit area for a …
