A Continuation Of The Study Of The Myxomycetes In The Vicinity Of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Jean Morrow, Keith Shaver
A Continuation Of The Study Of The Myxomycetes In The Vicinity Of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Jean Morrow, Keith Shaver
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This study of the Myxomycetes is a continuation of the study 1 started last year at Iowa Wesleyan College. Three of the slime molds reported this year, were grown in a moist chamber where the sporangia were unmolested and therefore excellent material for study. The other slime molds were collected from the decaying wood and leaves in shady and moist places. The specimens were stored in properly labeled match boxes. The microscope slides of glycerine mounts of the capillitium and spores were labeled and kept for reference.
Root-Like Protuberances Formed On Leaves And Cotyledons Of Helianthus Annuus L. In Response To 2, 4-D Treatment, S. N. Postlethwait
Root-Like Protuberances Formed On Leaves And Cotyledons Of Helianthus Annuus L. In Response To 2, 4-D Treatment, S. N. Postlethwait
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During a study of the histological effects of 2, 4-D on sunflower, root-like outgrowths were observed frequently on leaves and cotyledons. Protuberances on bean leaves treated with 2, 4-D have been reported by Felber (Felber, 1948). Felber describes these outgrowths as "thorn-like," 1 to 3 mm. long, white in color, and covered with small hairs. The root-like nature of the protuberances formed on sunflower suggest that they are different, structurally, from those observed on bean leaves. Cotyledonary roots induced by 2, 4-D have been described by Akamine (Akamine, 1948). This production of cotyledonary roots is obviously the same phenomenon as …

Further Study On The Liverworts Of Henry County, Iowa, S. S. Statler
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Last spring at the Iowa Academy of Science meeting we reported seven species of liverworts found in Henry County. Since that time seven more species have been found making a total of fourteen species. Those that were reported last year have been found in numerous other places. Conocephalum conicum has been found in many parts of the county. Marchantia polymorpha has been found in several places along Skunk River and Big Creek. Reboulia hemisphaerica occurs quite frequently throughout the county. Ricciocarpus natans grows profusely along the mud flats of Skunk River and in several ponds. Lophocolea heterophylla was collected from …
Differences In Foliar Organization Among Leaves From Four Locations In The Crown Of An Isolated Tree (Acer Platanoides), Robert B. Wylie
Differences In Foliar Organization Among Leaves From Four Locations In The Crown Of An Isolated Tree (Acer Platanoides), Robert B. Wylie
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Structural differences among the leaves of a single tree are well known and the literature on this subject is extensive. In most of these papers the tissue study was limited to transverse sections of the blade. Some of them included more or less critical analysis of various environmental factors. A limited number gave some measurements of venation but relatively little attention has been given to the inter-relations of the blade tissues, viewed as working unit. Reference is here limited to a few papers that are of interest in this connection and each of them carries a bibliography of related titles.
Iowa Pennsylvanian Goniatites, A. K. Miller
Iowa Pennsylvanian Goniatites, A. K. Miller
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In view of the exceptional stratigraphic value of Late Carboniferous ammonoids, it seems worthwhile to bring together the available information in regard to the known occurrences of these fossils in our State. However, they are rare indeed here, in comparison with the regions to the south, in spite of the fact that marine beds of Pennsylvanian age are widespread in the southern and central portions of Iowa. Their dearth in this area is presumably due to an abnormal salinity of the waters in which the sediments accumulated, rather than to a land barrier. Altogether I have been able to locate …
Micropaleontological Zones In Iowa, L. A. Thomas, C. A. Balster
Micropaleontological Zones In Iowa, L. A. Thomas, C. A. Balster
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Micropaleontological studies in the Iowa geologic section have been gaining impetus in the past few years, but no previous attempt has been made to assemble the accumulated information. The value of microfossils in defining and correlating stratigraphic units is generally accepted. This paper is a compilation of existing information in an attempt to establish preliminary fauna zones. Where diagnostic fossils for the various zones were not indicated by the original author we have chosen them according to relative abundance and unique occurrence, if possible. In some instances inadequate data limit the application of this method, and require listing of a …
Confidence In Correctness Of Responses On An Objective Test, Martin F. Fritz
Confidence In Correctness Of Responses On An Objective Test, Martin F. Fritz
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A form of objective test has been given at various times in which the student is required to indicate how certain he is of the correctness of his answers. This may be accomplished by having an answer sheet prepared with three columns, each column representing a degree of certainty according to a so-called scale.
Further Studies In Infant Speech, Orvis C. Irwin
Further Studies In Infant Speech, Orvis C. Irwin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
From time to time reports on the progress of a long time research on the development of speech in infants have been given to this group. Today I should like to discuss three recent findings of this work. The first is concerned with the effect of family occupational status upon the mastery of speech sounds by the infant. The second indicates the effect of the presence in the family of older siblings. And finally, an effort has been made to approach the problem of the diagnosis of speech sound status in the infant with the view of spotting during the …
The Problem Of Controlling Level Of Learning In Studies Of Associative Interference In Psychomotor Performance, Jack A. Adams
The Problem Of Controlling Level Of Learning In Studies Of Associative Interference In Psychomotor Performance, Jack A. Adams
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The problems discussed in this paper arose during a search for an experimental design that would yield reliable measures of associative interference for the individual subject. Such measures are needed as part of an extensive research project concerned with individual susceptibility to interference in verbal and psychomotor performance. Interference effects are commonly studied in the laboratory under conditions that provide for original learning (OL) of some task to a given criterion, interpolated learning (IL) of a different task to a given criterion, and the subsequent relearning (RL) or recall of the original task. Two measures of interference are sought when …
Some Factors In The Academic Superiority Of Veteran Students, William A. Owens, William A. Owens Jr.
Some Factors In The Academic Superiority Of Veteran Students, William A. Owens, William A. Owens Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Veterans of World War II in considerable numbers have now been back on college campuses for several years. Concern over their proper academic and vocational disposition has prompted a substantial number of studies of their differential characteristics as compared with non-veterans. It has, for example, been rather well established through such investigations as those of Clark (1), Gowan (2), Taylor (5), et al, that veterans tend to be superior to non-veterans in academic achievement at the college level. Gowan has, in addition, pointed out that this state of affairs still obtains if scholastic aptitude be held constant. Owens (4), in …
Keeping Employees Informed, Joann Pitcher, Max E. Thompson
Keeping Employees Informed, Joann Pitcher, Max E. Thompson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The widening interest in the topic of communicating with employees is evidenced by the increasing frequency with which articles relevant to this problem may be found in industrial, personnel, and business journals during the last three or four years. This increased incidence of articles indicates that men in management positions are beginning to recognize more and more the importance of keeping their employees informed about the company for which they are working in order to improve morale and job satisfaction, to further community and public relations, and to bring about a greater degree of cooperative efficiency throughout the organization.
Micro-Injection And Bio-Plastics Imbedding Of Embryos, William Paul Burch
Micro-Injection And Bio-Plastics Imbedding Of Embryos, William Paul Burch
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Various methods have been devised for injecting and mounting embryos for study of the early stages of the circulatory system. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate what the author feels is a more suitable means to accomplish this objective, not only from the standpoint of technique but for the interest and educational value received also.
Embryonic Cell Respiration: The Effect Of Methylene Blue And 2-4 Dinitrophenol On Embryonic Cell Respiration, Joseph Hall Bodine, Laurence Rockwell Fitzgerald
Embryonic Cell Respiration: The Effect Of Methylene Blue And 2-4 Dinitrophenol On Embryonic Cell Respiration, Joseph Hall Bodine, Laurence Rockwell Fitzgerald
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The effects of M.b. and 2-4 D.N.P. on the oxygen uptake of mitotically active and blocked grasshopper embryos have been worked out over wide concentration ranges. For both reagents an increase in stimulating effects occurs with increasing concentrations up to a maximum. For M.b. this maximum stimulation continues over a very wide range of concentrations and little injury for exposures of 1 to 2 hours results. With 2-4 D.N.P. rather marked toxic effects occur after the maximum stimulating doses are increased. The relative efficiency of the two reagents is such that 2-4 D.N.P. exerts greater stimulating effects than M.b. at …
Notes On The Bird Life In The Mississippi Valley, James Hodges
Notes On The Bird Life In The Mississippi Valley, James Hodges
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Perhaps one of the most neglected areas in Iowa ornithology is in the Mississippi Valley region. Though it is of great importance and rich in bird life the scarcity of active observers is nothing more than amazing. With the possible exception of Dubuque the remainder of the Valley remains unknown. I think that a review of this region may encourage others to commence investigations in this region. Since the Mississippi River borders all of the counties waterfowl can be observed in good numbers during the migration as the case with all aquatic species such as the gulls and terns. Small …
A Report On The Iowa Species Of Tachinidae (Diptera) In The Iowa Insect Survey Collection, H. E. Jaques
A Report On The Iowa Species Of Tachinidae (Diptera) In The Iowa Insect Survey Collection, H. E. Jaques
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The family Tachinidae is one of the most important families of flies. Well over 1500 species are known for our continent and more than 5000 species have been named for the entire world. Their chief value to man lies in their parasitic habits. Many of the species are highly destructive to injurious insects, especially the caterpillars of the Lepidoptera. Their usual procedure is to search out a prospective host and attach one or more eggs to the surface, often in some place which the victim cannot reach with its jaws. The maggot upon hatching immediately enters its host and lives …
Reliability And Relationship Of Certain Measures Of Reading Ability, David K. Trites
Reliability And Relationship Of Certain Measures Of Reading Ability, David K. Trites
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A number of studies (1) have been published concerning various methods of measuring reading rate and comprehension. The ophthalmograph has been described (2) as one of the more objective, semi-laboratory adaptations of these methods. The ophthalmograph is a portable, binocular eye-movement camera. The reading graph, or eye-movement photograph, obtained while the subject is reading a standard selection, provides objective evidence concerning reading speed, fixations, regressions, and other eye movements. By testing the subject on the material read a measure of his comprehension is obtained.
The Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Program, Kenneth D. Carlander
The Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Program, Kenneth D. Carlander
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Iowa State Conservation Commission and Iowa State College cooperate in a program of research, extension and education in the field of fishery management. This cooperative program, initiated in 1941, was patterned after that of the earlier established Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit (Scott, 1939). The research work is carried on by the permanent staff at the college and by graduate students some of whom are on fellowship appointments. The problems being investigated include those deemed most important in the management of Iowa's fishery resources and include work on streams, natural lakes, reservoirs, artificial inpoundments, and farm ponds.
A Study Of The Cardinal In Iowa, James Hodges
A Study Of The Cardinal In Iowa, James Hodges
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
One of the newer birds in the state of Iowa during the last half century is the Eastern Cardinal Richmondena cardinalis cardinalis. The Cardinal is a Carolinian form but has extended its range through most, if not all, of Iowa and has been recorded as a breeding bird in Minnesota and other northern states. This study was conducted from the spring of 1943 through October, 1947 in the area of Scott County, Iowa where the Cardinal is now a common resident. The Cardinal, because of its striking plumage, has attracted the attention of even the non-bird student and thus has …
Revisions And Additions To Our List Of Iowa Corixidae, D. D. Millspaugh
Revisions And Additions To Our List Of Iowa Corixidae, D. D. Millspaugh
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A preliminary survey and ecological notes of Iowa Corixidae was submitted to the Iowa Academy in 1940 in which paper some eight species were included. Since that time a monograph of the Corixidae of the Western Hemisphere by Dr. H. B. Hungerford, which includes a monograph of the Trichocorixa by Dr. R. I. Sailer, has been published. This work makes the present paper seem warranted and necessary since their study makes many generic changes as well as adds much to the known species.
A Preliminary List Of The Hydrophilidae Known To Occur In Iowa, S. S. Statler, H. E. Jaques
A Preliminary List Of The Hydrophilidae Known To Occur In Iowa, S. S. Statler, H. E. Jaques
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Hydrophilidae, or water scavenger beetles, received their name from the genus Hydrophilus, a word of Greek origin meaning, "a lover of water." They are usually found in ponds and streams. Several genera are, however, terrestrial in habit, living in moist earth and in the dung of cattle and horses, where they are said to feed upon the larvae of dipterous insects. The family consists of some 1,700 species, mostly tropical, but well represented in the temperate regions. About 190 species are known from the United States.
Notes On Ant-Lions, Richard F. Trump
Notes On Ant-Lions, Richard F. Trump
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In April 1944, while stationed with the Navy along Manzanillo Bay in Panama I became interested in the ant-lions which "den" in the dust under the coconut trees. In order to observe their digging operations I captured three and placed them in a tin can partly filled with dust. Watching them excavate their deadly pits, I noticed how perfectly spaced the holes were for use of the available space.
