Pennsylvanian Charophyta In Iowa, Leo A. Thomas Jan 1949

Pennsylvanian Charophyta In Iowa, Leo A. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Charophyta are a group of small plants of doubtful systematic position. They occur abundantly in quiet clear fresh and brackish waters and are widely distributed geographically. The part of the plant most commonly preserved as a fossil is the female reproductive organ, the oogina. The oogina may be calcified and these organs are at times major constituents in fresh water limestones. Oogina are widely distributed in the marine Middle and Upper Devonian of North America, occur sparsely in the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian, and are quite abundant in non-marine sediments from the Jurassic through the Tertiary. They are considered to be …

Homogeneity Of Behavior Indicated From The Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula, Charles O. Neidt Jan 1949

Homogeneity Of Behavior Indicated From The Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula, Charles O. Neidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reliability of a test is usually defined as the consistency with which a test measures whatever it measures, the consistency being indicated by the correlation between two administrations of the same test or between equivalent forms. Whenever it has not been feasible to administer the test twice, or whenever full-length equivalent forms have not been available, the procedure usually followed has been that of making two synthetic tests by scoring the odd- and even-numbered items separately, or by scoring two randomly-drawn lists of items. Dividing the test in this manner results in obtaining a correlation between two forms which …

The Concept Of Attitude, Dale Ortmeyer Jan 1949

The Concept Of Attitude, Dale Ortmeyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The concept of attitude in psychological and social psychological literature has a variety of interpretations and meanings. In the past few decades, the quantification of attitude measurement has been an area of experimental investigation. Measurement of any phenomenon pre-supposes a proper definition and an analysis of the concept under consideration. The present study is an approach to the clarification of the concept, preparatory to an experimental attack in the area of psychosociological measurement of attitudes. Contributions by men in the various schools of psychology are presented with emphasis placed upon the behavioristic point of view. Delimitation of the concept and …

Projecting Introductory Psychology Examinations At Iowa State College, Ross R. Thomas Jan 1949

Projecting Introductory Psychology Examinations At Iowa State College, Ross R. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the fall quarter of 1948 examinations in the introductory Psychology course at Iowa State College were first administered by slide projection. Results of this procedure were considered satisfactory and this method of administration has been continued. The primary reason for utilizing this method was to maintain the security of the examination material. Test slides were prepared in the departmental office, lessening the possibility of students obtaining tests prior to examination date. In addition, all test items were thus subject to independent use, further decreasing opportunities of procuring information as to examination content. Secondary reasons for the procedure were: (1) …

A Preliminary List Of Hemerobiidae Known To Occur In Iowa, Donovan Orman, H. E. Jaques Jan 1949

A Preliminary List Of Hemerobiidae Known To Occur In Iowa, Donovan Orman, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The brown lace wings (family Hemerobiidae) are fairly inconspicuous, fragile little insects sometimes flying in abundance at lights and frequently taken by general collecting such as sweeping plants or in examining dead leaves on the ground or other debris. The adults are of medium size and are inconspicuous in their natural habitat. The wings are iridescent and hairy with numerous small cells and many cross veins. The mouth parts are of a simple biting type, but in the larvae a modified biting and sucking type exists. In this type the mandibles are short and curved with grooves on the ventral …

Some Contributions Of Fossil Study To The Problem Of Vertebrate Origin, George M. Robertson Jan 1949

Some Contributions Of Fossil Study To The Problem Of Vertebrate Origin, George M. Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Prior to Darwin's time there had been speculations regarding the origin and the relationships of the various plant and animal groups. Some of these were ingenious and some of them hit close enough to post-Darwinian ideas to have led some biologists to over-value them. To most biologists of those days, however, such problems were unimportant. They seem to have taken the animal and plant groups for granted. Similarities and differences were used in classification, but to their authors such concepts as archetypes, etc. probably had no special philosophic importance. A vertebrate archetype was like an alphabet, a composite of the …

A Fish Population Study Of Storm Lake, Earl T. Rose Jan 1949

A Fish Population Study Of Storm Lake, Earl T. Rose

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Storm Lake, in Buena Vista County, is one of Iowa's largest inland bodies of water, covering a total of 3,060 acres. It is relatively shallow, with an average depth of about 6 feet, exclusive of a small dredged area along the east shore. The water in the lake is seldom clear due to wave action and heavy blooms of blue-green algae during summer. Spring and fall water conditions are usually good, and in recent years fishing has been excellent during these periods. The present game fish populations have been developed primarily by natural reproduction of indigenous species, and to a …

A Bignell (?) Loess Section In Western Iowa, Robert V. Ruhe Jan 1949

A Bignell (?) Loess Section In Western Iowa, Robert V. Ruhe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Bignell loess was named and first described by Schultz and Stout (1945). At the type section of the Bignell formation, near Bignell, Lincoln County, Nebraska, the upper loess (Bignell) is separated from the Peorian loess by a prominent soil and overlain by a complex topsoil. Condra, Reed, and Gordon (1947) have also described the Bignell loess. Various profile sections in this paper (figures 3, 7, 12 and 14) show that the Bignell loess is restricted to flood plains, terraces, and upland shoulders of the valleys of the eastern half of Nebraska. The Bignell loess has not been previously recognized …

Soil Aeration In Relation To Growth Of Tomatoes, Herman Wiebe Jan 1949

Soil Aeration In Relation To Growth Of Tomatoes, Herman Wiebe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is a well-known fact that forced aeration is beneficial, even essential for plants growing in solutions. It has also been reported beneficial for soil grown plants on various occasions. However, these reports are usually based on the appearance and yield of the mature plants. Information on the plant responses to aeration throughout the growing period is more limited. Clark and Shive in 1932 found that tomatoes grown in nonaerated nutrient solutions started flowering and fruiting somewhat earlier than the aerated controls, although later the aerated plants gave a much greater yield of fruit. Durell in 1941, also working with …

Hydrologic Comparisons For Floods Of June 1947 In Iowa, L. C. Crawford Jan 1949

Hydrologic Comparisons For Floods Of June 1947 In Iowa, L. C. Crawford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Man has always been plagued by floods and it is reasonable to expect that he will continue to be faced with a variety of flood problems in the years to come. The great floods of June 1947 in Iowa were a tragic reminder of the continuing danger which Man faces from excess rainfall and runoff. Those floods were outstanding, not only with respect to the depths and intensities of the rainfall which produced them, but also with regard to the maximum rates and total amounts of runoff which resulted and the tremendous quantities of soil which were washed from the …

An Annotated List Of The Fishes Of The Upper Des Moines River Basin In Iowa, Harry M. Harrison Jan 1949

An Annotated List Of The Fishes Of The Upper Des Moines River Basin In Iowa, Harry M. Harrison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The last known list of the fishes of the Des Moines River drainage was published by Meek (1892). During the same year Call (1892) listed the fishes found in the vicinity of Des Moines. Currently there is a paper in press by Starrett (1949) recording the fishes of Boone County. Inasmuch as many changes have taken place in the species composition of the drainage since the time of Meek, a need for a new list becomes apparent.

Mixed Colonies In Ants, Robert L. King Jan 1949

Mixed Colonies In Ants, Robert L. King

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mixed colonies of ants, in which different species live together in a single nest and raise their young in common, are usually the result of temporary social parasitism or of slave-making activities. Temporarily mixed colonies may be produced by the invasion of an already established nest of one species by a young fertilized female (queen) of another species that is unable to start a colony independently. The brood produced by this parasitic queen is raised by the workers of the host species, whose queen may be permitted to live out her life or who may have been killed, either by …

A Preliminary List Of The Dytiscidae Known To Occur In Iowa, J. C. Schaffner, H. E. Jaques Jan 1949

A Preliminary List Of The Dytiscidae Known To Occur In Iowa, J. C. Schaffner, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

These predacious diving beetles constitute the largest family (Dytiscidae) of Coleoptera inhabiting water. They are often seen hanging head downward in the water with the tip of the abdomen exposed at the surface. The members of this family are rather oval and flattened in shape. The elytra are usually hard and shiny, often with many punctures. Some of the smaller species are pubescent. The bare filiform antennae are glabrous and have eleven segments. The hind legs are flattened and have five tarsal segments which are fringed with long hairs making them strongly adapted for swimming. The beetles are usually brownish …

Effect Of So-Called Night-Driving Glasses On Visual Acuity - A Preliminary Study, A. R. Lauer, Edwin D. Fletcher, Paul Winston Jan 1949

Effect Of So-Called Night-Driving Glasses On Visual Acuity - A Preliminary Study, A. R. Lauer, Edwin D. Fletcher, Paul Winston

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Evidence from various studies such as those of Cobb ( 1914), Ferree and Rand (1923), Fry and Bartley (1933), Hecht (193S), Graham and Cook (1937), Bartley (1941) and more recently by Lauer and Silver (194S) and others have indicated that brightness contrast, as a function of stimulus illumination and consequent retinal stimulation, is one of the basic factors in visual acuity. It is a safe assertion that seeing efficiency and acuity are closely related, up to a certain level of illumination. At higher levels of illumination this perhaps does not hold. In certain quarters an opinion persists that filters which …

The Social Responsibility Of The Teacher Of Science, Joseph B. Gittler Jan 1949

The Social Responsibility Of The Teacher Of Science, Joseph B. Gittler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is the contention of this paper that facts of science (natural science) are being taught superlatively well by science teachers, but that the spirit of science - the logic and philosophy of science, science as an intellectual pursuit - tends to evade the domain of the science teacher. Furthermore, it is this failure to inculcate in the student this spirit of science - the scientific mentality - that accounts for some of the gravest ills in our society. If it is true that most of society's problems are man-made (and it can be shown without difficulty that they are …

Direct Seeding Of Black Locust For Production Of Posts In Southern Iowa, J. M. Aikman, G. R. Cooper Jan 1949

Direct Seeding Of Black Locust For Production Of Posts In Southern Iowa, J. M. Aikman, G. R. Cooper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Probably no woody plant has been introduced as widely, in as great numbers, in as short a period of time as was the black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia L. in the middle 1930's. The desirable qualities of this species have been emphasized by a few enthusiastic advocates since the latter part of the seventeenth century. It was because of these early favorable reports, based chiefly on limited observations rather than on scientific investigations, that the black locust came to be regarded as a tree which would survive under the most unfavorable conditions and led to its selection in 1934 as a …

The Use Of Gelatin Capsules In Artificial Pollination, William D. Creasy Jan 1949

The Use Of Gelatin Capsules In Artificial Pollination, William D. Creasy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a recent attempt to effect controlled pollination of large numbers of small flowers of the genus Scrophularia, some study was given to methods of avoiding accidental crosses. After trying a number of materials, gelatin capsules were found so satisfactory for this purpose that it seems desirable to record the method for the benefit of other workers.
