Some Proboscidian Remains Found In Henry County, Keith Sutton
Some Proboscidian Remains Found In Henry County, Keith Sutton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
My object in preparing this account is to bring together all available data concerning Proboscidian remains which have been found or reported in Henry County, Iowa, and to make this information available to those interested. The tooth of a Mastodon that roamed this area of Iowa in the Pleistocene Age was found Southeast of Rome, Iowa by the author, February 1949, in Big Cedar Creek, in Tippicanoe Township, Section 17, on the Lynn Wright farm. The tooth is from species Elephas columbi. This elephant was taller than the Mammoth and rivalled the largest existing elephants in stature.
Some Notes On The Glacial Geology Of Drake Quadrangle, North Dakota, Lewis F. Jenkinson
Some Notes On The Glacial Geology Of Drake Quadrangle, North Dakota, Lewis F. Jenkinson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Drake quadrangle includes approximately 200 square miles, and lies between 100°15' and 100° 30' West longitude and between 47°45' and 48°00' North latitude. In general, the area is located in the north central part of North Dakota. This quadrangle is unique in that many ice-contact features are present within the area. These include kames, eskers, and crevasse fillings. It is not the intent of this paper to discuss every ice-contact feature present, but to bring forth the available data gathered by the writer concerning eskers and crevasse fillings, evaluate this information, and try to draw a conclusion as to …
Petrographic Notes On The Loesses Of The Des Moines Drift Lobe, Robert V. Ruhe
Petrographic Notes On The Loesses Of The Des Moines Drift Lobe, Robert V. Ruhe
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recent field study has resulted in the reclassification of the glacial drifts of northwestern Iowa. The Bemis moraine of Leverett (1932, pp. 57-61) is believed to be the Cary drift, and the Altamont and younger moraines (Leverett, 1932, pp. 67-7 5) have been designated the Mankato drift. The Cary and Mankato drifts are both overlain by discontinuous loess mantles. Loess has not been recognized previously on the Des Moines lobe either by geologists (Kay and Graham, 1943, p. 205) or by soil scientists (Riecken and Smith, 1949, pp. 2a, 3a, 13-16; McMiller, 1945). The loess overlying the Cary drift does …

Changes In Vision As A Result Of Hypnotic Age Regression, William H. Roberts, Duane Black
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Hypnotic suggestion that the subject was celebrating her seventh birthday resulted in certain changes in vision to be shown in the table below. The subject is the wife of the junior author of this article, Mrs. Duane Black. She is a healthy, intelligent young woman, seventeen years of age, married about two years and the mother of one child. She completed two years of high school. As a child she was considered precocious. Her eyesight was defective from early childhood, but she began wearing glasses only in her twelfth year. She was then in the eighth grade. Her unaided vision …
Foliar Organization And Vascularization Of Tolmiea Menziesii, Robert B. Wylie
Foliar Organization And Vascularization Of Tolmiea Menziesii, Robert B. Wylie
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The leaf of Tolnziea Menziesii (Pursh) T & G first attracted my attention a number of years ago because of the unusual structure and vascularization of its blade. More recently I have surveyed its nonvascular tissues and vein-spacing and a brief report is here presented. This species is an herbaceous perennial belonging to the Saxifragaceae, and is a near relative to Heuchera. Its lower leaves may live over the winter in areas where the plant grows naturally and the flowering stems reach a height of 2-3 feet. This species has attracted attention because of its habit of developing new plants …

Vein Length Per Unit Area Of Blade In Native Grasses, Robert C. Lommasson
Vein Length Per Unit Area Of Blade In Native Grasses, Robert C. Lommasson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The primary object of this investigation is to present the values for vein length per unit area in a number of grasses growing in their natural habitats, and to this end no material from greenhouses or from cultivated fields has been used in this study though a number of such forms have been surveyed. The use of vein length per unit area as an expression of the degree of vascularization has been used for several years. Schuster (1910) was one of the early workers to measure the venation in monocotyledon leaves. His table lists 29 species only one of which …

Exploratory Studies On The Constituents Of Scoparia Dulcis (Linn), Watler M. Budde, R. L. Shriner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1942 M. C. Nath of the University of Dacca in India reported that an Indian drug called amellin was effective orally in treating diabetes (1). From 1942-1947, seven additional papers have been published by Nath and co-workers (2) which describe the physiological effects of amellin and also clinical results on 15 patients. It is stated that oral doses of 15 to 20 mg. per day along with calcium salts over a period of several weeks to three months cause return of blood sugar to normal levels and disappearance of glycosuria and ketonuria. The only information about amellin given, was …
Vinyl Plastics As Materials Of Construction, Karl Kammermeyer
Vinyl Plastics As Materials Of Construction, Karl Kammermeyer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A sufficiently long period of time has now elapsed since the first major impact of plastic products was felt in almost every phase of consumer and industry relations, so that it is possible to give a rather good evaluation of the import of plastics for industry and consumer alike. With any new product or class of products, the very real danger exists that over-enthusiasm in product development by manufacturers, as well as in product acceptance by the public may lead to hasty decisions, which in turn result in regrettable consequences.
A Simple Vacuum Tube Oscillator - Tesla Coil Source Unit For Spectrographic Analysis, Robert E. Keller, Lothrop Smith
A Simple Vacuum Tube Oscillator - Tesla Coil Source Unit For Spectrographic Analysis, Robert E. Keller, Lothrop Smith
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Little consideration has been given of recent date to the possibilities of high frequency excitation with emission spectrography. By such excitation it is possible to make spectrographic investigations for elements in non-conducting materials and to investigate organic compounds which have the property of luminescing. High frequency excitation by means of a Tesla coil has been investigated in Europe but little in this country. Gerlach and Gerlach1 tried incorporating a Tesla coil with an oscillating circuit fed from a transmitting valve, but shelved this arrangement because of undesirable features such as sensitive tuning, nitrogen bands and lack of high voltage. …
Effect Of Wave Length Bands Of Filtered Light On Germination Of Seeds Of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis), Louis N. Bass
Effect Of Wave Length Bands Of Filtered Light On Germination Of Seeds Of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa Pratensis), Louis N. Bass
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Botanists have long known that light, supplied during the germination period, may increase germination percentages. Most studies concerning the effects of light on the germination of seeds have utilized the entire visible spectrum. Only a few workers have studied the effects of various portions of the spectrum. However, results of these studies, dealing with a number of species, have not been consistent. The effect of color of light on germination of Kentucky bluegrass seed has not been previously investigated. Since it is a light sensitive species it was felt that such a study would provide additional basic information on the …
The Adaptability Of Several Histological Techniques To The Preparation Of P32 Radioautographs From Plant Tissues, Wayne J. Mcilrath
The Adaptability Of Several Histological Techniques To The Preparation Of P32 Radioautographs From Plant Tissues, Wayne J. Mcilrath
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
With the increased use of radioactive isotopes in plant research, there has been a corresponding increase in the application of radioautographic techniques. Through the use of such radioautographs, tissue localization of the radioactive elements has been accomplished thereby giving additional insight into the accumulation and role of various elements in specific tissues. One of the radioactive elements that has found widespread application in physiological research is P 32. Although a number of workers have prepared P32 autographs from unsectioned plant tissues, very few have been made using histological sections (McIlrath, 1948). Because of the widespread use of this …
Mechanism Of Salivary Amylase Action, John H. Pazur, Dexter French, Doris W. Knapp
Mechanism Of Salivary Amylase Action, John H. Pazur, Dexter French, Doris W. Knapp
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The action of salivary amylase on amylo-type compounds is interpreted by most investigators as a random hydrolysis of the a-1, 4-glucosidic linkages. By this mode of action, intermediate reaction products which would have physical and chemical properties characteristic of the reaction mixture may be formed. The nature of these intermediates has been deduced from measurements of osmotic pressure, viscosity, iodine coloration, reducing power, etc. generally on crude enzymic digests. Investigations of this type which form the basis of the concept of random action are excellently reviewed by Hanes (9).
The Formation Of Morpholine Thiosulfate From Morpholine And Sulfur, Edward M. Peters, Watler T. Smith Jr.
The Formation Of Morpholine Thiosulfate From Morpholine And Sulfur, Edward M. Peters, Watler T. Smith Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years the use of morpholine and sulfur in the Willgerodt reaction has received considerable attention. There have been several mechanisms proposed for the Willgerodt reaction, but the most generally accepted mechanism today is that outlined by King and McMillan1. These authors have attempted to show that an independent reaction between sulfur and the amine is essential to this reaction. They have postulated an amine sulfide intermediate similar to the already known amine oxides. These sulfides have not been isolated as by-products of the reaction nor have they been prepared in any other way. The only previous …
Lophotrichus As A Cellulolytic Genus, Thomas J. Bulat
Lophotrichus As A Cellulolytic Genus, Thomas J. Bulat
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The genus Lophotrichus was based by Benjamin (Mycologia 41 :346-354. 1949) on two species, one from Illinois, L. ampullus, selected as the type species, and one from Peru, L. martinii. Both were isolated from dung. The general habit of these fungi, the character of the perithecia, and the lemon-shaped spores produced in evanescent asci clearly suggest their close relationship with Chaetomium. Benjamin placed them in a distinct genus of the Chaetorniaceae, because of their long necks and their submerged habit of growth, both on dung and on agar media. The original isolation of L. martinii was from …
Specific Gravities And Boiling Points Of Dichlormethane - Soybean Oil Mixtures, L. K. Arnold, L. J. Breuklander
Specific Gravities And Boiling Points Of Dichlormethane - Soybean Oil Mixtures, L. K. Arnold, L. J. Breuklander
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Dichlormethane, or methylene chloride, is a chlorinated hydrocarbon having the following characteristics (1) : formula, CH2Cl2 ; molecular weight, 84.94; boiling point (at one atmosphere), 39.8°C; latent heat of vaporization 78.7 calories per gram; and specific gravity at 25°C/25°C, 1.3256. It is an excellent solvent for soybean oil. Since it was believed that it had possibilities as a solvent for the industrial extraction of soybean oil, studies were initiated to determine its suitability for this purpose. Preliminary to actual pilot plant studies certain necessary fundamental data were determined. Some of these data relating to specific gravities and …
Infrared Spectrum And Structure Of Ethylene Imine, George E. Evans, Tice Hoffman
Infrared Spectrum And Structure Of Ethylene Imine, George E. Evans, Tice Hoffman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
From chemical data (1), ethylene imine appears to be a three membered heterocyclic ring similar to cyclopropane and ethylene oxide. It has a very high boiling point, 55°C, as compared with --34°C for cyclopropane and 13°C for ethylene oxide. This has been taken as evidence of strong hydrogen bonding in the liquid, and is supported by the strongly basic character of the imine nitrogen atom. Ethylene imine readily polymerizes to viscous, oily, chain type polymers in the presence of carbon dioxide or mild oxidizing agents. However, Jones and co-workers (2) have reported that ethylene imine polymerizes to a negligible amount …
An Empirical Titrimetric Method For The Determination Of Beryllium, John H. Mcclure, Charles V. Banks
An Empirical Titrimetric Method For The Determination Of Beryllium, John H. Mcclure, Charles V. Banks
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recently, in connection with a study of the metallurgy of beryllium, a rapid and accurate method was needed for the determination of this metal. A review of the literature revealed that the existing titrimetric methods are based on hydrolysis, neutralization or precipitation reactions. These methods are outlined briefly below. 1. Direct titration of a beryllium salt with sodium hydroxide using phenolphthalein as the indicator (3). 2. An iodometric titration of the acid resulting from the hydrolysis of a beryllium salt (3, 10). 3. Hydrolysis of a fluoberyllate in the presence of calcium chloride followed by titration with sodium hydroxide using …
A Post-Loveland Pre-Iowan Loess In Western Iowa, John C. Mickelson
A Post-Loveland Pre-Iowan Loess In Western Iowa, John C. Mickelson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The literature concerning the Pleistocene deposits of Iowa does not mention the presence of a loess sheet younger than the Loveland loess and older than the Iowan loess. The writer is of the opinion that such a loess exists in Iowa. The following evidence is presented to substantiate this conclusion. During the summer of 1948 the writer was engaged in a study of the Loveland formation of Iowa under the auspices of the Iowa Geological Survey. During the course of this investigation the presence of a post-Loveland and pre-Iowan loess was revealed in two exposures
Additional Notes On The Position Of The Independence Shale Of The Iowa Devonian, Merrill A. Stainbrook
Additional Notes On The Position Of The Independence Shale Of The Iowa Devonian, Merrill A. Stainbrook
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Independence shale, the earliest named formation of the Iowa Devonian, was described in 1878 by Samuel Calvin (1). He then, and later (2), stated that it was beneath the Cedar Valley limestone. Several geologists have since suggested that it was the same as the Kenwood shale (5) or a later formation (3, 7, 10) let down into the Cedar Valley. In 1935 Stainbrook (8) corroborated the conclusion of Calvin and in 1945 (9) gave all known evidences in favor of the presence of the shale beneath the Cedar Valley limestone and above the Davenport. The present paper summarizes additional …
Some Physical Characteristics Of Wiesenboden And Planosol Soils Developed From Peorian Loess In Southwestern Iowa., Rudolph Ulrich, F. F. Riecken
Some Physical Characteristics Of Wiesenboden And Planosol Soils Developed From Peorian Loess In Southwestern Iowa., Rudolph Ulrich, F. F. Riecken
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study by Hutton ( 1947, p. 426-31) of the gently sloping Prairie soils derived from Peorian, or Wisconsin, loess in southwestern Iowa showed that certain morphological, chemical, and physical properties are related to the thickness and distribution of the loess. Previous field studies had indicated that in a qualitative way, properties of the associated loess-derived Wiesenboden and Planosol soils also were related to thickness and distribution of the loess. The present study was undertaken to determine if quantitative information could be obtained on the functional relationship between certain soil properties, chiefly physical, and the loess distribution. The study consisted …
Bounds For The Derivatives Of The Solution Of The Neumann Problem, Clair G. Maple
Bounds For The Derivatives Of The Solution Of The Neumann Problem, Clair G. Maple
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The method of the present paper was first developed in connection with the Dirichlet problem,1 which is based on the idea of the hypercircle in function space introduced by W. Prager and J. L. Synge.2 The present work differs from that of Prager and Synge in that they were interested in obtaining bounds in the mean square sense for elastostatic boundary value problems, whereas we have as our present objective the determination of bounds at a point for the derivatives of the solution of the Neumann problem. In the present paper, it is assumed that the hypercircle has …
Bernoulli Numbers, R. B. Mcclenon
Bernoulli Numbers, R. B. Mcclenon
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The first appearance of the set of rational numbers of which I am speaking was in James Bernoulli's Ars Conjectandi. This work was published in 1713, eight years after the death of its author. In the 2nd chapter, Bernoulli deals with permutations and combinations.
Measures For Predicting Calculus Achievement, Orlando C. Kreider
Measures For Predicting Calculus Achievement, Orlando C. Kreider
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Once a student has entered college algebra and indicated a curriculum that requires calculus, educators are concerned about both his probable academic mortality prior to calculus and his probable scholastic achievement if he perseveres through calculus. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss first, measures to predict mortality prior to calculus, and second, measures to predict scholastic achievement in first-quarter calculus.
