Basement Complex Biotite Granite At Dubuque, Iowa, Keith E. Anderson Jan 1950

Basement Complex Biotite Granite At Dubuque, Iowa, Keith E. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The city well No. 8 at Dubuque, Iowa penetrated slightly more than 15 feet of the upper part of the crystalline pre-Cambrian basement complex. This well is of particular interest because it is the southeastern-most of the 15 wells in Iowa known to reach the crystalline basement, and because samples from the well were sufficiently large to permit preparation of thin sections for petrographic examination. The well was drilled in 1946 to a depth of 1,781.7 feet by the Varner Well Company of Dubuque. Drilling was by the cable-tool method. The well is located on the floodplain of the Mississippi …

Structure Of Batio3, Edward G. Grimsal Jan 1950

Structure Of Batio3, Edward G. Grimsal

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The theoretical model for the ferroelectric effect in barium titanate (Mason and Matthias, 1948) assumes a displacement of the titanium from the center of the unit cell in the z direction, probably due to the formation of a covalent bond with the c-centered oxygen. This displacement had been observed earlier by Dr. Danielson (Danielson, Matthias, and Richardson, 1948) and given as about 0.16A, at 20°C. This value, based on the relatively high intensity of x-ray scattering from the 0-0-11 plane, as shown by a Weissenberg pattern using molybdenum radiation was later brought into question by work at the Institute for …

Differential Interests Of Agricultural College Students As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, John A. Bath Jan 1950

Differential Interests Of Agricultural College Students As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Kuder Preference Record has enjoyed wide usage as a counselor's aid in determining categorical interests of individuals. Many studies have been made in an attempt to discover differential interests of occupational groups and of those engaged in the pursuit of various college curricula. Such significant differences in interests as are found have been deemed to be of valuable assistance to the vocational and educational counselor. So far as the writer has been able to discover, little use has been made of the Kuder Preference Record in the measurement of interests of college students pursuing an agricultural curriculum. This may …

A Revision Of Tile List Of Tabanidae (Diptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, Keith Sutton, D. D. Millspaugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A preliminary list of the Tabanidae known to occur in Iowa was published in the proceedings of the 1936 Iowa Academy of Science by L. K. Cutkomp and Dr. H. E. Jaques. The Tabanidae is a family of medium to large flies, commonly called horse flies and deer flies.

Causes Of Differences In Soil Series Of The Missouri River Bottomlands Of Monona County, J. E. Mcclelland, E. M. White, F. F. Riecken Jan 1950

Causes Of Differences In Soil Series Of The Missouri River Bottomlands Of Monona County, J. E. Mcclelland, E. M. White, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The current soil survey of Monona County has revealed many differences in the alluvial deposits occurring in the Missouri River bottomlands. As a consequence the soils developed from these different deposits show numerous dissimilarities. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and explain the causes of the differences encountered. The principal factors in soil formation are climate, organisms, topography, parent material and time. In the Missouri River bottomlands of Monona County it can be assumed that climate and organisms are not important causes of soil differences. In general, differences in topography are closely related to differences in parent …

Some Responses Of Black Locust To Planting Site Treatment, George R. Cooper, J. M. Aikman Jan 1950

Some Responses Of Black Locust To Planting Site Treatment, George R. Cooper, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The black locust tree has been of value to man for many decades. It was introduced into Europe from the Appalachian region in the early part of the seventeenth century. Over a wide area on both continents it has had three important uses: the strong, spreading root system is well adapted for holding eroding soil; the durability of its wood in contact with the soil makes it of great value as fence posts which are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain; and it is a legume with that family's useful quality of improving the soil on which it grows by the …

The Effectiveness Of Experienced And Inexperienced Teachers As Shown By Student Achievement, Orlando C. Kreider Jan 1950

The Effectiveness Of Experienced And Inexperienced Teachers As Shown By Student Achievement, Orlando C. Kreider

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The large number of students who enrolled in the colleges of the United States after World War II brought many unusual problems to college administrators. The influx of students was so great that the teaching personnel had to be rapidly increased. Many inexperienced teachers had to be employed. It is probable that temporary staff members included many whose training and other traits would have barred them from teaching except during such an emergency. This condition provided an excellent opportunity for testing many hypotheses that could not have been tested under prevailing college conditions in normal times. One of the important …

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum Jan 1950

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The selection of students for the veterinary college at Iowa State College has become a real problem. Every year several times the enrollment capacity applies for entrance, and from this large group the few who are to be allowed admission must be carefully selected. In selecting these students, chief reliance has been placed on past scholastic records, both high school and pre-professional training in college, and upon various measures of scholastic aptitude. At present, a veterinary aptitude test is being developed by W. A. Owens of the Department of Psychology and L. C. Payne, School of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State …

A Preliminary List Of The Gyrinidae (Coleoptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, J. C. Schaffner, D. D. Millspaugh Jan 1950

A Preliminary List Of The Gyrinidae (Coleoptera) Known To Occur In Iowa, J. C. Schaffner, D. D. Millspaugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Gyrinids are the most easily-recognized family of the order Coleoptera inhabiting water. The brilliant steel-blue or black whirligig beetles are often seen gyrating in groups on the surface of the quiet water of ponds and streams. They are such agile swimmers that it is difficult to capture them without a net. When captured, the beetle secretes a milky fluid with a disagreeable odor although in some species the odor suggests ripe apples. The food consists of other small insects that fall into the water.

Relation Of The Fritz-Neidt Practical Policy Test To Freshman: Entrance Tests, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1950

Relation Of The Fritz-Neidt Practical Policy Test To Freshman: Entrance Tests, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous investigations, reported to the Psychology Section of the Iowa Academy of Science, have been concerned with the development of a test designed to measure cynicism and idealism. Since the nature of the items used, the theory of the construction, the manner of administration, and the method of scoring have already been described (see references), no attempt will be made to consider these details in this paper.

Development Of A Test Of Aptitude For Veterinary Medicine, William A. Owens Jan 1950

Development Of A Test Of Aptitude For Veterinary Medicine, William A. Owens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Particularly since the war, schools of veterinary medicine have been able to enroll for training only a relatively small percentage of their applicants. An increased emphasis upon the importance of identifying the best qualified candidates has resulted in a careful reexamination of selection procedures and in recognition of the possible utilization of some sort of veterinary aptitude test.

Interaction Between Proteins And Chloride Ion, Charles Tanford Jan 1950

Interaction Between Proteins And Chloride Ion, Charles Tanford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has become increasingly clear in recent years that some proteins are capable of binding most common anions, and many studies with organic dye anions, detergent anions, and with some inorganic anions have been reported. On the basis of some of these studies Klotz and Urquhart4 have suggested that a "binding index" exists, which can be computed from the amino acid composition of a protein, and which will predict the relative affinity of different proteins for any anion. It would be desirable to test this hypothesis for chloride ion, since this is the most abundant anion in physiological systems. …

A Continuation Of The Study Of The Myxomycetes In The Vicinity Of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Jean Morrow, Keith Shaver

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study of the Myxomycetes of Henry County is a continuation of the project started at Iowa Wesleyan College two years ago and continued last year. Our entire supply of material for study this year came from natural sources whereas in the past, part of the material has been collected from a moist chamber. The slime molds were, without exception, collected from moist decaying wood found in secluded shady places. All specimens were, after collection, stored in properly labeled match boxes, to be used for further examination. The microscope slides of glycerine mounts, used in classification of spores and capillitium, …

Reliability Of The O'Connor Block Test, Richard H. Bunch, R. N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer Jan 1950

Reliability Of The O'Connor Block Test, Richard H. Bunch, R. N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The O'Connor Block test is widely known and is manufactured and sold without any very definite information as to its reliability and validity. In fact it seems to be used without great uniformity in method of administration. Whenever mechanical ability is discussed one is likely to hear of this test along with several others. No published studies of the O'Connor Block test of any great importance have been made on its relative merits and its reliability and validity. Several years ago exploratory studies on this test, along with others designed to measure mechanical aptitude and ingenuity, were conducted in the …

Some Observations Of The Paha Of Northeast Iowa, W. H. Scholtes, Guy D. Smith Jan 1950

Some Observations Of The Paha Of Northeast Iowa, W. H. Scholtes, Guy D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The loess capped ridges associated with the Iowan glacial drift plain in northeast Iowa have been called "paha" by McGee (2)*, a term used by the Dakota Indians to describe these peculiar geological formations. The paha have been described (2) as "the elongated swell of soft and graceful contour, standing apart on the plain, or else connected with its fellows sometimes in long lines, again in congeries, and locally merging to form broad plateaus." The occurrence of paha in the Iowan drift plain of northeast Iowa has been reported by several authors (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9). Most …

Effect On Growth And Efficiency Of Food Utilization Of Quantity Of Protein And Vitamin B12 Supplementation, Edmund Wei Cheng, Byron H. Thomas Jan 1950

Effect On Growth And Efficiency Of Food Utilization Of Quantity Of Protein And Vitamin B12 Supplementation, Edmund Wei Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Certain nutritional and therapeutic values of liver extracts had been demonstrated experimentally again and again prior to 1948. Most of the early studies were related mainly to hematopoiesis (Subbarow et al., 1945), yet others were concerned with their capacity to augment the growth promoting properties of rations for chicks (Nichol et al., 1948), mice (Bosshardt et al., 1946) and rats (Jaffe, 1946; Sporn et al., 1947; Ershoff, 1947; Zucker, 1948). More recently the beneficial effects of liver extracts for hogs and poultry have been attributed to an unknown factor (s) tentatively identified as the "animal protein factor, APF." The identity …

Glaciated Surfaces In Central Iowa, Charles S. Gwynne Jan 1950

Glaciated Surfaces In Central Iowa, Charles S. Gwynne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Glaciated bedrock surfaces are of course known from many parts of the world. Many have been described. Some have been examined in detail for what they might disclose as to the behavior of glacial ice and the process of glacial erosion. Many undoubtedly are or have been exposed in Iowa and other parts of the Midwest within recent times, but few have been reported in the literature, at least from Iowa. Only ten localities having striae are shown, in Iowa, on the Glacial map of North America (Flint, 1945), whereas there are relatively many more shown in states to the …

A Comparison Of Attitude Scores Made On The Conover Attitude Inventory Before And After A Course In Driving, Raymond J. Agan Jan 1950

A Comparison Of Attitude Scores Made On The Conover Attitude Inventory Before And After A Course In Driving, Raymond J. Agan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An important goal of any course of study is to change or improve the students' attitudes toward that subject. An attempt has been made in this investigation to determine the effect of driver training programs on certain attitudes of individuals toward factors shown to be important in safe driving by a comparison of these attitudes as measured by an objective pre-test taken before the course and the same attitudes as measured by retesting after the course. The general hypothesis of the study may be stated as follows: A course in driver education administered by a competent instructor, will initiate a …

The Colorimetric Determination Of Cobalt With Dimethylglyoxime And Benzidine, Francis T. Lee, Harvey Diehl Jan 1950

The Colorimetric Determination Of Cobalt With Dimethylglyoxime And Benzidine, Francis T. Lee, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Compounds of cobalt and dimethylglyoxime were first prepared by Tschugaeff during the course of his classical researches on the α-dioximes (1). The simplest of these compounds corresponded to the formula [Co (NH3)2 (DH2)2] X2, DH2 representing a molecule of dimethylglyoxime and X a univalent anion. Tschugaeff prepared other compounds in which one or more of the ammonia groups were replaced by aniline or pyridine.

Notes And New Records Of Iowa Henliptera (Heteroptera), James A. Slater Jan 1950

Notes And New Records Of Iowa Henliptera (Heteroptera), James A. Slater

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A single specimen of Banasa euchlora was listed for Iowa by Osborn (1892) without definite locality. Stoner ( 1920), in the only definitive work on the Iowa Pentatomoidea, lists the species as known within the state boundaries only by the early Osborn record. The species has remained known from Iowa only by this early record to the present time. The writer is now able to confirm the presence of this species as a part of the Iowa fauna. A specimen in the Iowa State College insect collection bears the label, Shenandoah, Iowa, July 15, 1931, REG. Recently a second specimen, …
