Determination Of Calcite-Dolomite Ratios In Carbonate Rocks, Ralph W. Lawson Jan 1950

Determination Of Calcite-Dolomite Ratios In Carbonate Rocks, Ralph W. Lawson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When studying a large number of carbonate rock samples, the usual methods for determining the calcite or dolomite content are time-consuming and tedious. To identify and count grains in thin-section is difficult for the most experienced. If sections or powders of the rock are subjected to various stains or dyes grain counts, still, must be made. In working with the silver nitrate-potassium chromate method (Lemberg, 1892), the author noticed a definite difference in the colors produced in several samples of powdered limestone by the stain. In this method the calcite is stained a very dusky red, whereas the dolomite is …

Contributions To The Ornithology Of The Upper Mississippi Valley - Pt. I. An Unpublished List By J. H. Paarmann On The Birds Of Davenport, Iowa, And Vicinity, James Hodges Jan 1950

Contributions To The Ornithology Of The Upper Mississippi Valley - Pt. I. An Unpublished List By J. H. Paarmann On The Birds Of Davenport, Iowa, And Vicinity, James Hodges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recently the University of South Carolina press published an outstanding volume on the avifauna of that state. In years past other states have published similar works concerning their respective avifaunas. But alas, Iowa, or the entire Middle Western region for that matter, have remained in the background. This is not apparently because of the lack of interest in its bird life, or relative abundance of observers; but simply a matter of circumstances that can be rectified only with the passing of years. The 1907 list of The Birds of Iowa by R. M. Anderson is outdated in some respects while …

The Professional Status Of The Biologist, Frank M. Semans Jan 1950

The Professional Status Of The Biologist, Frank M. Semans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The term "biologist" may suggest a person who didn't quite succeed as a specialist, for biology after all is not a single science but a series of related sciences, whose relationships are not always obvious. The small liberal arts college biology professor and some of the naturalists have probably come closest to the category of "biologist," although neither· has been customarily designated specifically as a "biologist." In the past two decades a small number of private entomologists, usually known as "consulting entomologists," have appeared and managed in most cases not much more than barely to exist financially. Recently the term …

Activity Patterns Of Some Clear Lake, Iowa, Fishes, James G. Sieh, John Parsons Jan 1950

Activity Patterns Of Some Clear Lake, Iowa, Fishes, James G. Sieh, John Parsons

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fish populations in Clear Lake, in north central Iowa, are being studied annually by various members of the Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit to determine the changes in species composition, growth rates, condition, year class abundance, and other measures of value in fisheries biology (Bailey and Harrison, 1945; Lewis and Carlander, 1948; Cleary, 1949; Carlander and Cleary, 1949). In connection with these investigations, experimental gill nets were set in various parts of the lake. Since the nets were usually lifted at two-hour intervals, the times at which the fish were caught were recorded, thereby giving a measure of the …

The Huggins Test For Cancer And Related Protein Determination, Hjalmer V. Peterson, Harold W. Morgan Jan 1950

The Huggins Test For Cancer And Related Protein Determination, Hjalmer V. Peterson, Harold W. Morgan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Due to the tremendous amount of research work being done on cancer in recent years, a number of diagnostic tests have been developed by different groups of individuals. One of the most promising of the cancer detection methods utilizes the principle of (1) selective differentiation of blood sera by means of transmitted filtered ultra violet light. Cancer sera transmit more light and more fluorescence than normal or non-malignant sera, and the fluorescence in cancer sera appears blue or violet; in non-malignant sera the fluorescence is yellow or olive green. In 1800 sera, of which 1600 were non-malignant, the percentage of …
