Industrial Arts At The Iowa State Teachers College, 1904 To 1957, Jackson Lee Logan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In 1904 the program of manual training, later to be known as manual arts and still later as industrial arts, was offered at the Iowa State Teachers College (Iowa State Normal School) at Cedar Falls, Iowa. During the fifty-three years which have elapsed since the beginning much change has occurred in this program. However no systematic compilation of this change has been recorded.

The 1957 Class Trip To Chicago For The Seniors Of Thirty Iowa High Schools, Alvin F. Huisman Jan 1957

The 1957 Class Trip To Chicago For The Seniors Of Thirty Iowa High Schools, Alvin F. Huisman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the end of World War II there has been an increasing number of trips by the graduating classes of Iowa high schools. The present heavy emphasis on senior class trips is reflected in the vast amount of advertising literature school administrators receive concerning educational tours. The writer received during the 1956-1957 academic year fourteen brochures concerning various cities. The increased interest in such trips is also shown by the fact that one railroad carried 60,000 students on school trips in 1954, and another 50,000. Washington, D.C., has one-half million student visitors each spring, while Detroit has 2,000 visiting school …

A Study Based On The Responses To A Questionnaire About The Drinking Habits Of The High School Students Of Floyd County, Iowa, Charles William Edwards Jan 1957

A Study Based On The Responses To A Questionnaire About The Drinking Habits Of The High School Students Of Floyd County, Iowa, Charles William Edwards

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this inquiry is to determine what a random sample of public high school students of Floyd County, Iowa say about their use of alcohol. These data can then be compared with the results from the other two studies cited since they used substantially the same techniques as were used here. From this examination and comparison possible solutions to some of the problems presented may be found. Its purpose is also to make this information available in the hope that it will prompt others to make further inquiry.

The Flora Of Emmet County, Lowa, B. O. Wolden Jan 1956

The Flora Of Emmet County, Lowa, B. O. Wolden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The original paper with this title, prepared in the late 1920's, was submitted for publication in 1932, and appeared in Volume 39 of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science. In the introduction to that list there was a brief description of the topography and of the natural areas of the county. It has not been considered necessary to repeat such description in this paper except to indicate some of the changes that have taken place since that time and which have affected the flora. The greatest changes, consisting of bringing the prairie under cultivation, draining most of the …

Response Strength As A Function Of Alley Length And Time Of Deprivation, Norma C. Fredenburg Jan 1956

Response Strength As A Function Of Alley Length And Time Of Deprivation, Norma C. Fredenburg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present study has been formulated to test Hull's assumption of differential formation of habit strength of the initial S-R components of response chains of different length. A factorial design with two lengths of alley and 1\Hl times of food deprivation was employed. From the assumptions of 1) differential drive based upon food privation, 2) differential habit based upon alley length, and 3) the multiplicative relationship between drive level and habit strength, a larger difference between the response strengths for long and short chains would he predicted for the high drive groups than for the low drive groups. Incidental to …

Vegetational Change In A Southern Wisconsin Township, Richard T. Ward Jan 1956

Vegetational Change In A Southern Wisconsin Township, Richard T. Ward

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to compare the present natural wooded vegetation of Beloit township with that prior to settlement by white man and to evaluate any changes indicated. For present day composition, data from Chamberlain Springs are of primary importance, with observations on farm woodlots in the area adding supplementary information. For the vegetational pattern in the early 1800s the writings of early visitors and settlers are helpful.

Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle, R. B. Mcclenon Jan 1956

Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle, R. B. Mcclenon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In almost all books on College Algebra, the Pascal Triangle is placed in such a position as to show the binomial coefficients in a horizontal line. This position is appropriate when the only use of the triangle is to help students remember these coefficients; but Pascal had a wider purpose in mind. Pascal's Construction. Pascal first sets up a lattice-work consisting of equal squares, assigning to each square a definite positive integer which he determines as follows. 1. The number in each square of the 1st (top) row, and also in each square of the 1st (left-hand) column is to …

On The Half-Life Of Nests Of Formica Obscuripes Forel., R. L. King, R. M. Sallee Jan 1956

On The Half-Life Of Nests Of Formica Obscuripes Forel., R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In these Proceedings for 1953 (p. 656) we discussed the duration of nets of Formica obscuripes Forel. We now have data for two additional years which establish certain facts only indicated earlier. The survey was started during the summer of 1945 on the grounds of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in Dickinson County, Iowa. Nests of the thatching ant were marked with metal tags on wire stakes and were plotted by compass readings from conspicuous features of the surroundings. The survey was repeated each summer; new nests were located and marked, and the loss of old nests recorded. The data are …

Age And Handedness As Factors In The Performance Of A Complex Pursuit Task: Results Of A Study At The Iowa State Fair, Guy H. Miles, Don Lewis Jan 1956

Age And Handedness As Factors In The Performance Of A Complex Pursuit Task: Results Of A Study At The Iowa State Fair, Guy H. Miles, Don Lewis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In connection with systematic studies of the underlying variables which affect the learning and retention of complex skills, it has been found that certain patterns of response-the steering and pointing patterns, in particular--are firmly ingrained in the average person before adulthood is reached. They are so rigidly fixed that alterations of them are extremely difficult to produce in reasonable lengths of time, under laboratory conditions. They depend on a high degree of coordination of perceptual and motor components of behavior, and are presumably acquired during many years of reinforced practice. Steering left when turning right is desired is seemingly as …

Analysis Of Whistling Patterns In The Eastern Bob-White, Colinus V. Virginianus L., James B. Elder Jan 1956

Analysis Of Whistling Patterns In The Eastern Bob-White, Colinus V. Virginianus L., James B. Elder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The cheery whistle of the male bob-white, Colinus v. virgmzanus L., is a familiar and welcome sign of spring wherever this species occurs. Game biologists have made practical use of the bob-white's whistle by using roadside counts of whistling bob-whites as a means of estimating changes in relative abundance from year to year (Bennitt, 1951) . As devised by Bennitt for use in Missouri, the roadside whistle counts required the services of a large number of observers. Each obsnver was assigned a predetermined "station" consisting of about thirty miles of all-weather road within a major soil type. Counts were made …

A Photographic Technique For Measuring Plant Section Growth, B. E. Michel Jan 1956

A Photographic Technique For Measuring Plant Section Growth, B. E. Michel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When comparing the effects of growth regulators on the growth of etiolated plant sections it is desirable to measure not only the final lengths reached after some period of time, but also the rate of growth during that time. This problem has been approached in three ways.

Classification Of The Fungi Lmperfecti, Roger D. Goos Jan 1956

Classification Of The Fungi Lmperfecti, Roger D. Goos

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years, some dissatisfaction has been expressed concerning the commonly used classification of the Fungi Imperfecti. The discontent with the present system has arisen from the fact that the characteristics used to delimit taxa (i.e. spore color and septation, arrangement of the conidiophores, etc.) often results in the separation of morphologically similar genera, while at the same time placing together what seem to be unrelated genera. The present system was proposed by Saccardo when the major interest in the Fungi Imperfecti was in their role as plant pathogens. Now these fungi are being studied more intensively than ever before, …

Some Practical Laboratory Aspects Of Forensic Alcohol Determinations, Kurt M. Dubowski Jan 1956

Some Practical Laboratory Aspects Of Forensic Alcohol Determinations, Kurt M. Dubowski

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Determination of ethyl alcohol in human biological material is the most common forsenic chemical examination, the majority of such determinations being performed in connection with investigations to establish the presence or absence of alcoholic influence in operators of motor vehicles. Utilization of alcohol determinations by law enforcement agencies in the United States continues to increase rapidly as demonstrated by an increase of 220% in the number of cities employing chemical tests for alcoholic influence during the last 4 years1. Twenty-three states now have chemical test legislation. Because of the rapidly expanding employment of forensic alcohol determinations, it seemed …

Stalactitic-Like Deposits Found In A Gravel Pit In Black Hawk County, E. J. Cable

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The icicle-like forms shown in Figure 1 were brought to me as fulgurites. They are not fulgurites nor are they stalactites. Fulgurites are hollow and these icicle-like forms do not show the structure of stalactites.

Types Of Mammalian Hibernation, Richard L. Farrand, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Marvin L. Riedesel Jan 1956

Types Of Mammalian Hibernation, Richard L. Farrand, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Marvin L. Riedesel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mammalian hibernation is characterized by a reduction in metabolic activities and an increase in scrum magnesium (1). Although these similarities exist, there are also striking differences in the patterns of hibernation among mammalian types. This study describes three types of hibernation as observed in the golden hamster, the thirteen lined ground squirrel, and the bat. The major differences recorded in these three types of hibernators were concerned with the preparation for hibernation, the survival during hibernation, and the duration of domancy in deep hibernation. Overall results suggest that hibernation is harmful to the hamster after relatively long periods of cold …
