A Program For Dutch Elm Disease Control On The Iowa State College Campus, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr. Jan 1956

A Program For Dutch Elm Disease Control On The Iowa State College Campus, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The formation of a model control program as a guide for Dutch elm disease control in Iowa seems advisable when the recent spread of the disease is considered. Such a control program, with the campus of Iowa State College taken as the physical area, is the main objective of this paper. lt also illustrates the part local biology classes and service organizations can do in an undertaking of this kind. There are five main activities included in a sound Dutch elm disease control program. These are education, evaluation, maintenance, sanitation, and spraying.

The Use Of The Didymium Filter For Wavelength Calibration In Spectrophotometry, Robert S. Melville

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the first problems in the installation of any new spectrophotometer is the verification of the wavelength calibration. There are several methods available for this procedure. For standardization each method employs some source of monochromatic light of a specific wavelength.

Forming Impressions Of Personality: An Experimental Critique, Harry A. Grace Jan 1956

Forming Impressions Of Personality: An Experimental Critique, Harry A. Grace

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Asch's recent text (2) emphasizes his experiment on the formation of impressions (1). Asch read seven words to two groups of subjects. The fourth word for Group A was warm and the fourth for Group B was cold. The order of the words for both groups was: intelligent, skillful, industrious, warm (cold), determined, practical, cautious. After the list had been read, subjects were instructed to choose the more appropriate word from each of 18 pairs of antonyms. The percentage of agreement with the "positive" word of each pair of antonyms was determined for both groups. Groups A and B differed …

Ultrastructure Of The Golgi Apparatus, Mitochondria And Endoplasmic Reticulum, H. W. Beams, Everett Anderson Jan 1956

Ultrastructure Of The Golgi Apparatus, Mitochondria And Endoplasmic Reticulum, H. W. Beams, Everett Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Golgi apparatus was first observed by Golgi in 1898 and referred to by him as the "apperato reticulare interno". Notwithstanding the fact that this material has since been described in practically every type of cell, not all investigators are agreed that it is a bonafide cellular structure. In fact, it has been characterized as an artifact by Walker and Allen (1927), Parat (1928), Worley (1946), Palade and Claude (1949), Baker (1950) and Thomas (1951). Much credit is due Dalton and Felix (1954) for clearly demonstrating the Golgi apparatus by means of the phase-contrast and electron microscopes. In fact strong …

Nylon Vs. Linen Gill Nets At Clear Lake, Lowa, Richard L. Ridenhour, Charles J. Di Cóstanzo Jan 1956

Nylon Vs. Linen Gill Nets At Clear Lake, Lowa, Richard L. Ridenhour, Charles J. Di Cóstanzo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reports that nylon gill nets fish more efficiently than linen or cotton gill nets led to the use of nylon netting for sampling fish populations at Clear Lake in 1953 (Carlander, 1953) . Since an increase in catch per unit effort was obtained with the nylon nets in 1953, both nylon and linen nets were fished in a comparative manner in 1954 and 1955 so that quantitative estimates of their relative efficiency could be made.

Influence Of Time Of Application Of 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T And Ddt On Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Germination And Pasture Weed Populations, Louis N. Bass, E. P. Sylwester Jan 1956

Influence Of Time Of Application Of 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T And Ddt On Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Germination And Pasture Weed Populations, Louis N. Bass, E. P. Sylwester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The bluegrass seed industry is continually faced with the problem of excessive amounts of weed material in the freshly stripped bluegrass seed which farmers bring to their drying yards for sale. If the weed material content is too great the seedsmen refuse to buy the bluegrass seed offered to them; however, they cannot refuse to buy all strippings which contain weed material or they will not have sufficient seed to meet the demand for processed Kentucky bluegrass seed.

What Helps A Physicist Grow?, E. M. Vaughan Jan 1956

What Helps A Physicist Grow?, E. M. Vaughan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

What helps a physicist grow? This question and a very good answer appeared in a recent issue of Physic Today. The answer in case you didn't sec it was given by Eaton H. Draper of AVCO. "Top level associates, freedom from routine, and technically sophisticated assignments are all vital. But the one most important factor is a climate which encourages a healthy questioning of the known, as well as the unknown. Given this a scientist or physicist will perform at his peak, and beyond." He needs says Mr. Draper, "An atmosphere of inquiry." It is important that this atmosphere be …

Comparing Inventory Items By Use Of Ibm Punch Cards, Virtus W. Suhr Jan 1956

Comparing Inventory Items By Use Of Ibm Punch Cards, Virtus W. Suhr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Extensive analysis of specific inventory-item information on large numbers of any extended form by ordinary methods would be practically impossible due to the volume and labor involved. To overcome this obstacle it is necessary to put the data into a form in which large numbers of completed inventories can be item analyzed easily and quickly but without losing completeness and individuality. A system using IBM punch cards seemed to meet all of these conditions when a counting or statistical sorter is available. The IBM punch card, as shown in Figure 1, is known to most research workers. Data, after having …

Frequency Analysis Of Eegs Of Stutterers And Normal Speakers During Photic Stimulation, Robert E. Correll Jan 1956

Frequency Analysis Of Eegs Of Stutterers And Normal Speakers During Photic Stimulation, Robert E. Correll

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the past, numerous investigators have attempted to demonstrate differences between the electroencephalograms of normal speakers and stutterers. These studies have utilized both unilateral and bilateral recordings and have used measures of per cent time alpha, isomorphism (defined in terms of similarity of the waveforms of the two hemispheres) and synchronization (defined in terms of phase relationships existing between the waves in the two hemispheres). Some consistencies have been found, but many of the studies still require validation.

Comparison Of Motor Vehicle Traffic Death Rate Trends In Iowa, Washington And The U.S., Clifford O. Swanson Jan 1956

Comparison Of Motor Vehicle Traffic Death Rate Trends In Iowa, Washington And The U.S., Clifford O. Swanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a recent study (3) by the author on trends in motor vehicle fatalities, extrapolations were made for 20 years hence. The trends indicated a definite reduction in traffic death rates (deaths per 100 million vehicle miles). The rates and trends were based on data for the 20-ycar period, 1935-1954. The data used were from official figures published by the National Safety Council (2). As stated, rates are decreasing, yet we do find annual fluctuations sometimes greater than expected in each state and for the total U.S. for which it is at times difficult to give a satisfactory explanation. In …

Scholastic Probation And Size Of High School, Martin F. Fritz, Kentner V. Fritz Jan 1956

Scholastic Probation And Size Of High School, Martin F. Fritz, Kentner V. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years, much attention has been focused on school reorganization in Iowa (cf. "Midland Schools," October and No\·- ember, 1953; ''The Iowan," December-January, 1953-54, and April.May, 1954.) Some proponents of reorganization claim that the "small high school" (a high school with total enrollment of less than 100 pupils) is not adequately preparing students for college. If true, it is to be expected that this would result in poor grades at the college len:l. One approach would be to determine whether or not there is a relationship between size of high school and scholastic probation. If it were established that …

Light And Electron Microscope Studies On The Cells Of The Labyrinth In The "Green Gland" Of Cambarus Sp., Everett Anderson, H. W. Beams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the course of studying the distal portion of the crayfish nephron tubule (Beams, Anderson and Press, 1956) cytoplasmic inclusion bodies of unknown origin were encountered in the cells of the labyrinth with a peculiar fibrous or laminated internal structure. This paper deals primarily with an investigation of these.

Pheasant Nesting And Production In Winnebago County, Iowa, 1940 Versus 1954, Edward L. Kozicky, George O. Hendrickson Jan 1956

Pheasant Nesting And Production In Winnebago County, Iowa, 1940 Versus 1954, Edward L. Kozicky, George O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit has conducted research on the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) since 1935 on the Winnebago Research Area. From 1939-41 intensive nesting studies were made (Baskett, 1947) and again from 1950- 54. However, during this latter period, other investigations curtailed a complete nesting investigation, and it was not until 1954 (Klonglan, 1955) that time was available for a complete study with comparable spring pheasant populations. Since fall pheasant population levels in the 1939-41 period were estimated at 140 to 400 birds per section as compared to 100 to 110 birds from 1950-54, an intensive nesting study …

Absorption Of Nutrient Ions By The Tomato Plant At Various Stages Of Development, Wayne J. Mcilrath Jan 1956

Absorption Of Nutrient Ions By The Tomato Plant At Various Stages Of Development, Wayne J. Mcilrath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In studies with herbaceous annuals, it has often been observed that characteristic changes in metabolism and rate of growth are closely associated with certain stages in the development cycle (Loehwing, 1942, 1948, 1951; Murneek, 1937; Wittwer, 1943). Of particular interest have been changes accompanying synapsis and syngamy. One of the changes following these stages appears to be a marked acceleration in the rate of inorganic ion uptake from the substrate. Such accelerations have been shown to follow floral initiation and formation of the embryo in several plants including barley (Burd, 1919), corn (Hornberger, 1882; Jones and Huston, 1914), cotton (Olson …

The Cayler Prairie: An Ecologic And Taxonomic Study Of A Northwest Iowa Prairie, J. M. Aikman, Robert F. Thorne Jan 1956

The Cayler Prairie: An Ecologic And Taxonomic Study Of A Northwest Iowa Prairie, J. M. Aikman, Robert F. Thorne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The largest, most varied, and most intensively studied remnant of rolling prairie in northwestern Iowa is the Gayler tract in Dickinson County. This unplowed, ungrazed prairie acreage, located just west of a branch of the Little Sioux River, is undisturbed except for the annual late August cutting for wild hay and the activities of biologists in the summer and hunters in the fall. The proximity of this beautiful prairie to the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, about 4Yz miles away by good roads, has made it the subject of numerous investigations by plant taxonomists, ecologists, entomologists, mammalogists, and other specialists. Several of …

Relationships Between Number Of Verbal Associations To Value Words And Subjective Ratings Of Values, Alice Van Krevelen Jan 1956

Relationships Between Number Of Verbal Associations To Value Words And Subjective Ratings Of Values, Alice Van Krevelen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study attempts to demonstrate whether or not there is a relationship between Ss' rankings of statements descriptive of Spranger's values and the number of verbal associations made by the same Ss to nouns referring to these values. Noble (2) has demonstrated that one may define the meaningfulness of a stimulus word in terms of the number of associations to this word written by Ss within a prescribed time. Bousfield and Samborski (1) using the written association method of Noble attempted to test the hypothesis that for individuals the relative strength of personal values should correlate positively with the extent …

Notes On Rare Iowa Plants - Ii, Robert F. Thorne Jan 1956

Notes On Rare Iowa Plants - Ii, Robert F. Thorne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Much new information about the vascular plants of Iowa has resulted from three years of botanical exploration in various parts of the state since the first "Notes" were presented in 1953. Some of the more interesting results of the author's botanical gleanings in the period 1953-1955 have been published (Aikman and Thome 1956, Beal and Monson 1954, Cooperrider 1955a and 1955b, Grant and Thorne 1955, and Thome 1955.) Much more data, however, about species not previously reported from Iowa or rarely collected in the state should be placed on record for interested botanists. This information, with supplementary data from overlooked …

Nitrogen Uptake In Oats, S. C. Wiggans, K. J. Frey Jan 1956

Nitrogen Uptake In Oats, S. C. Wiggans, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The differential ability of strains of a crop species to absorb and utilize nitrogen has important implications in the development of new field crop varieties. This fact becomes more important with the increased need for nitrogen fertilization that is necessary to maintain and improve the yields of crops. Varieties of crops which produce relatively high yields when grown on soils with limited amounts of available nitrogen will undoubtedly be more popular in the future. Harvey (6) found that some com inbreds were more efficient than others in utilizing soil nitrogen. This characteristic proved to be inherited in crosses between good …

Evidence Of Multiple Loess Deposition In Western Iowa, R. L. Handy, D.T. Davidson Jan 1956

Evidence Of Multiple Loess Deposition In Western Iowa, R. L. Handy, D.T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several Wisconsin Loess sections were described before the Iowa Academy of Science in 1953 (1), and data for in-place density and particle size were presented. The thickest of these sections was exposed in a newly opened quarry near Crescent City, Iowa (Fig. 1). This section was of particular interest because it showed several zones of clay concentration at different depths, and at that time it was suggested that the clayey zones might be related to lulls in deposition of the Wisconsin loess. The clayey zones divide the loess into four units which could supposedly correlate with the four advances of …

The aim was to determine if characteristic profiles existed which would supplement existing data on population sub-groups and which might serve as an aid in vocational guidance. Break-downs by sex and college division or department were planned.

Validation Of The Grassi Block Substitution Test For Measuring Brain Pathology, Michael Hirt Jan 1956

Validation Of The Grassi Block Substitution Test For Measuring Brain Pathology, Michael Hirt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The human brain is most vulnerable from two sources of damage: external trauma and chemical reactions. We now recognize and distinguish two types of symptoms following brain damage: neurological and psychological. In this study emphasis will be placed upon the psychological behavior of the individual. This is justified with the understanding that the psychological behavior will reflect to some extent the neurological changes which might have occurred in the brain. Furthermore, the concern in this study is with that part of behavior which is evoked whenever there is organic involvement and to which it is possible to apply accepted psychometric …
