Alterations In The Shoot Apex Of Petunia Hybrida Vilm. At Flowering, Paul V. Prior
Alterations In The Shoot Apex Of Petunia Hybrida Vilm. At Flowering, Paul V. Prior
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the past twenty years a number of morphologists and physiologists have studied the organization and behavior of shoot apices during the vegetative and flowering phases of development. Changes in size and shape as well as alterations in stratification have been reported to occur during each plastochron or interval between the production of leaf primordia (Foster 1939). A number of authors have noted differences in size and shape between vegetative and flowering apices in the same species. Although the literature contains numerous references to studies on vegetative and flowering apices, only casual observations have been made on the possible permanent …
Effect Of Heat Treatment On Oat Seeds, E. Ruan, K. J. Frey
Effect Of Heat Treatment On Oat Seeds, E. Ruan, K. J. Frey
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
One method of handling oat grain with a moisture content too high for safe storage is artificial drying. This practice involves forcing heated air through the grain until the moisture content is reduced to the 13.5 percent considered safe. Problems inherent with this practice are the maximum grain moisture content at which artificial heat can be applied safely, and the maximum temperatures that can be used for drying.
Histolytic Polyploidy In Root Tips Of Maize, John E. Sass
Histolytic Polyploidy In Root Tips Of Maize, John E. Sass
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A sample of "Hopi Indian" maize from an unknown locale in New Mexico was brought into the writer's laboratory for the preparation of sections of the radicle for the study of the histogens. The sample consisted of a mixture of creamy white kernels, black kernels and kernels of intermediate shades of gray. Some of the paraffin ribbon of radicles was discarded because of the presence of a large cavity behind the root cap. The shape and consistent position of the cavity did not resemble the results of faulty infiltration, and a study of finished preparations showed that the cavities are …

Variation Of Loess Thickness And Clay Content In Southern Iowa, A. R. Dahl, R. L. Handy, D. T. Davidson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This report summarizes two aspects of the Wisconsin loess in southern Iowa and presents some information on the sandy-silt immediately underlying the loess and overlying the till in southcentral Iowa. The data has originated from project work done over the last five year on the loess and glacial till of Iowa (Project 283-S) in .an attempt to solve the problem of stabilization of loess and till for roads. This paper incorporates data procured to date on the loess of southwest, southern and east-central Iowa and present studies in progress in south-central Iowa. (See references 1, 2, 3 and 4.)
Current Effects In Ferromagnetic Wires, Grant O. Gale, George Sullivan
Current Effects In Ferromagnetic Wires, Grant O. Gale, George Sullivan
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Oersted effect explains the magnetic field surrounding a conductor carrying an electric current. In January 19 5 7 Galel reported that ferromagnetic wires carrying d.c. currents have their magnetizations changed and in addition to the current-field there is a change in the field set up by the re-orientation of the domains in the wire. The motion of the domains at the inception and interruption of a direct current in the wire can be shown by surrounding the wire sample with a search coil. The motion of the domains induces a voltage in the search coil similar to the Barkhausen …
The Multipoint Two-Hand Coordinator: Apparatus For Studying The Acquisition And Tran Sf Er Of Skill In Performing Subject-Paced Tasks, Don Lewis
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Multipoint Two-Hand Coordinator 1 retains the control mechanism of the Two-Hand Coordinator described elsewhere by Shephard and Lewis ( 1). Both devices require the turning of two lathe-like cranks to effect changes in the position of a target follower. The essential difference between them is that the Multipoint utilizes a stationary hard-rubber plate bearing an irregular "pathway" of small circular brass buttons instead of a revolving disk and a single moving target. Consequently, the Multipoint provides subject-paced (unpaced) tasks while the more familiar Two-Hand Coordinator provides paced tasks.
An Intravenous Assay For Antidiuretic Substance, Frederic A. Giere
An Intravenous Assay For Antidiuretic Substance, Frederic A. Giere
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years it has been our desire to evaluate the presence of antidiuretic substance (ADS) in the bloods of animals under various experimental conditions (Giere, 1951; Eversole, Giere and Rock, 1952; Giere and Eversole, 1954; Eversole and Giere, 1954). For these determinations we have used the method of Birnie, et al. (1950) and also Ames and van Dyke's (1952) modification of the intravenous method of Jeffers, Livezey and Austin (1942). Although these technics are qualitatively accurate it has been our experience that they are oftentimes difficult to duplicate. The following technic is offered as a semi-quantitative procedure which can …
The Implications Of Animal Research For Problems In Mental Health, Leon S. Otis
The Implications Of Animal Research For Problems In Mental Health, Leon S. Otis
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The title of this talk is stated in a much too positive way for one to feel fully comfortable about it. Perhaps it should end with a question mark rather than a period. That is, it appears legitimate to ask: what sorts of implications, if any, does animal research have for mental health? The simplest and most honest answer (assuming that we all know what the term mental health means, in the first place) is that we don't know.

The Relationship Between Moisture Content And X-Ray Sensitivity Of Oat Seeds, Avena Sativa, R. Abrams, K. J. Frey
The Relationship Between Moisture Content And X-Ray Sensitivity Of Oat Seeds, Avena Sativa, R. Abrams, K. J. Frey
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
About a decade ago, Gustafsson (3) reported that the sensitivity of barley seeds to x-ray treatment was positively related to their moisture content. Sensitivity was measured by germination percentage and vigor of seedlings produced from treated seeds. However, Caldecott (1) recently has shown that barley seeds with a moisture percentage between 8 and 16 were more resistant to x-ray damage than those with either a lower or higher water content. These conflicting results probably are related to differences in methods used to temper the seeds by the two investigators. Gustafsson (3) soaked the seeds in water while Caldecott (1) placed …
Free Iron Distribution In Some Poorly Drained Prairie Soils In Iowa, G. H. Simonson, R. C. Prill, F. F. Riecken
Free Iron Distribution In Some Poorly Drained Prairie Soils In Iowa, G. H. Simonson, R. C. Prill, F. F. Riecken
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In classification and mapping of soils an interpretation of the natural drainage characteristics of the soil types is usually made. Some standard natural drainage classes used are poorly drained, imperfectly drained, moderately well- drained, and well-drained (1). Interpretation of the natural drainage of the soils is important from the agronomic standpoint, and also is basic to the soil classification scheme in present use. The natural drainage of a soil is interpreted mainly by inferences from the color and mottling of hydrated iron oxides in the subsoil. Few studies have been made of the nature and quantity of these iron oxides …
A Modern Approach To Elementary Analysis, H. C. Trimble
A Modern Approach To Elementary Analysis, H. C. Trimble
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recall, on the one hand, that mathematics has grown up in the past one hundred fifty years. With the acceptance of non-euclidean geometrics, of algebraic structures beginning with groups, and of symbolic logic, the very idea of what mathematics is had to change. It took a while for mathematicians to digest the ideas of men like Lobachevski, Galois, and Boole. The Bourbaki notion of mathematics as a 'storehouse of structures' is new in the last few decades.
Sorptive Properties Of Plant Cuticle, Wallace H. Orgell
Sorptive Properties Of Plant Cuticle, Wallace H. Orgell
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Before a foliar applied chemical can contact plant protoplasm, it must cross a barrier of cuticle, present on either the external (14) or internal (18) surfaces of the plant. However, little is known about the nature of the cuticle or its interactions with various chemicals.
Effect Of Burning On Seedstalk Production Of Native Prairie Grasses, John H. Ehrenreich, J. M. Aikman
Effect Of Burning On Seedstalk Production Of Native Prairie Grasses, John H. Ehrenreich, J. M. Aikman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This study was conducted on the Hayden prairie, located in northeastern Iowa and involved a further investigation of the effects of burning on the growth of certain native prairie grasses as to relative production of various plant parts. The measurements are of plants taken from an upland prairie area burned in 1956 and an adjacent unburned area.
Relationship Of Topography To The Distribution Of Soils And To Loess Thickness On The Galva-Primghar Experimental Farm, R. C. Prill, W. D. Shrader, R. P. Nicholson
Relationship Of Topography To The Distribution Of Soils And To Loess Thickness On The Galva-Primghar Experimental Farm, R. C. Prill, W. D. Shrader, R. P. Nicholson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The preparation of a highly detailed soil map and a contour map of the Galva-Primghar Experimental Farm has provided an opportunity to study the relationship of topography to the distribution of soils and to the loess thickness pattern on the farm. A report on these relationships is given in this paper.
Problems Associated With Soils Stabilization. In The Vicinity Of Point Barrow, Alaska, J. B. O'Sullivan, K. M. Hussey
Problems Associated With Soils Stabilization. In The Vicinity Of Point Barrow, Alaska, J. B. O'Sullivan, K. M. Hussey
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Point Barrow is located in the northernmost extremity of the Arctic Coastal Plain (Figure 1). The coastal plain is an undulating surface of low relief, the major relief being in the vicinity of the major northflowing rivers. The general lack of relief is largely due to the fact that the area is a recently elevated segment of the continental shelf, and thus, it has the low relief characteristics of most recently emerged coastal plains.

The Cobalt-3,5-Dimethylpyrazole Reaction, Ronald T. Pflaum, Lowell H. Dieter
The Cobalt-3,5-Dimethylpyrazole Reaction, Ronald T. Pflaum, Lowell H. Dieter
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The reaction of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole with cobalt (II) ion in aqueous solution was first observed by Fischer in 1925 (1). He investigated a series of organic compounds as precipitants for the common metal ions and noted that aluminum, cobalt, iron, and zinc (among others) formed precipitates with 3,5-dimethylpyrazole. Surprisingly enough, preciphation was not observed with copper and nickel. A reagent capable of differentiating between cobalt and nickel was thus potentially available. In 1930, Heim (2) used 3,5-dimethylpyrazole for the determination of cobalt ion in solutions of cobalt salts after separation of interfering ions. The blue-violet precipitate formed in basic solution was …
Thermal Conductivity Of Nickel And Uranium, G. J. Pearson, P. O. Davey, G. C. Danielson
Thermal Conductivity Of Nickel And Uranium, G. J. Pearson, P. O. Davey, G. C. Danielson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The thermal conductivity of a metal can be measured at any temperature by a method in which the conductivity of the metal under investigation is compared with the known conductivity of some metal chosen as a standard (1). The rate of heat flow, Q, in a cylindrical specimen of unknown conductivity, is given by the equation Q = - K1AG1, where Ki is the unknown thermal conductivity, A is the cross-sectional area, and G1 = (ΔT/Ax)1 is the temperature gradient. If a cylindrical bar of equal cross-sectional area and known thermal conductivity, K …
Analysis Of The 1956 Automobile Fatalities In Iowa By Age, Sex, And Other Factors, Lillian C. Schwenk
Analysis Of The 1956 Automobile Fatalities In Iowa By Age, Sex, And Other Factors, Lillian C. Schwenk
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1956 there were 69 7 lives lost in motor vehicle accidents in Iowa as compared with the 606 recorded in 1955. Considering sex, the tabulation shows that 171 females and 43 5 males were killed in 1955, whereas 202 females and 495 males lost their lives in 1956 through automobile accidents, or an increase of 31 females and 60 males. Analysis of the results further shows that the age of drivers who lost their lives ranged from 7-86! The ratio of male to female drivers killed in accidents is approximately 7: 1, whereas the overall fatality list showed about …

Growth Of The Channel Catfish, Lctalurus Punctatus (Rafinesque), In Some Iowa Waters, Harry M. Harrison
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), ranks first on the preferred list of the Iowa stream angler. It abounds everywhere in those streams of the state which have permanent or year around flows. Also, it is the only game species of economic importance that has state-wide distribution in our flowing waters. Because of its unchallenged popularity an.d wide spread distribution, the species has been accorded considerable attention in the study and management of Iowa streams. Many phases in the life history of the channel catfish are being explored with the hope that as answers are found and are coordinated, that …

A Standardized Method For Evaluating The Image In Fluorescence Microscopy, David A. Yos
A Standardized Method For Evaluating The Image In Fluorescence Microscopy, David A. Yos
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The problem of evaluating the virtual image in fluorescence microscopy is essentially one of assaying the several attributes of color, viz. hue, value, and chroma or saturation. DeMent (1942) suggested that fluorescence phenomena be reported according to the recommendations on color of the American Optical Society. This is a qualitative estimate employing some twenty-one hue names qualified by eight adjectives. The present work has been designed to delimit these adjectives and to provide a common denominator for the concept of hue. The concept of hue varies not only with an individual's inherited ability to perceive color, but also with the …
Tillering Studies On Oats: Iv. Effect Of Rate And Date Of Nitrogen Fertilizer Application, K. J. Frey, S. C. Wiggans
Tillering Studies On Oats: Iv. Effect Of Rate And Date Of Nitrogen Fertilizer Application, K. J. Frey, S. C. Wiggans
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Nitrogen applied to oat fields has many morphological and physiological effects on the plants. Increased grain yields have been reported by Nelson et al. (5), Pritchett, (6) and many others; increased overall top growth was reported by Gericke (3); and increased nitrogen content of the grain has been found by Wiggans and Frey (7), Brieba (1), and others. In a greenhouse experiment Gericke (3) found that a delay in applying nitrogen to oats in a low fertility soil increased the number of heads per plant. An application equal to 80 pounds per acre at seeding produced approximately 1.5 heads per …
The Effect Of Mechanical Stimulation On The Collenchyma Of Apium Graveolens L., Waldo S. Walker
The Effect Of Mechanical Stimulation On The Collenchyma Of Apium Graveolens L., Waldo S. Walker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although the possibility that mechanical stimulation is a factor in the quantity of strengthening tissue in the stems of plants has been frequently suggested, few experiments have been designed to test this hypothesis. Although some work has been done on tensile strength of collenchyma (Ambronn 1881, Esau 1936, Curtis 1938), very little consideration has been directed to the study of the effect of mechanical stimulation on the structure and/or quantity of this tissue or any of the mechanical tissues of the plant. Venning (1949) reported that wind motion from an electric fan stimulated the development of collenchyma within the petioles …

Closed System Electrical Conductance Apparatus For Non-Aqueous Systems, Alexander I. Popov, William A. Deskin, Norman E. Skelly
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Studies of electrical conductance in non-aqueous solvents is often hampered by the ability of the solvents to absorb moisture and/or carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Even small traces of these impurities may alter considerably the conducting properties of the solution and render the measurements invalid. The errors become especially important when the solutes are highly hygroscopic themselves. The usual technique for cases where contact of solutions with the atmosphere is to be avoided is to prepare them in a conventional dry-box. This renders the operation tedious and time-consuming especially when a number of exact dilutions have to be made. These …
A Snake Trematode With An Unusual Condition Of The Genital Atrium, John D. Goodman
A Snake Trematode With An Unusual Condition Of The Genital Atrium, John D. Goodman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
On April 8, 1948, the writer collected a blue racer, Coluber constrictor ftaviventris Say, along a small creek about three miles south of Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, Van Buren County, Iowa. Upon examination, the mouth was found to contain two trematodes belonging to the subfamily Ochetosomatinae Leao, 1944 (= Reniferinae Pratt, 1902). The trematodes were fully mature adults and were identified as Ochetosoma. vallida (Nicoll, 1911). Nicoll originally described this species as Lechriorchis vallidus from the hognosed snake, Heterodon contortrix Linn., but it was transferred by Talbot ( 1933) to the genus Renifer Pratt because of the lateral position of the …
