A Case Of Gila Monster Poisoning With A Summary Of Some Previous Accounts, Martin L. Grant, L. J. Henderson Jan 1957

A Case Of Gila Monster Poisoning With A Summary Of Some Previous Accounts, Martin L. Grant, L. J. Henderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since published accounts of the effects of Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum Cope) bites are variable and conflicting, due undoubtedly to the many uncontrolled factors involved, it has seemed appropriate to put on record the details of one which was observed under unusually favorable circumstances. In this instance the first author was the patient, or experimental animal, or victim, depending on the point of view, and the second author was the attending physician. They tried to play the additional part of impartial observers, and, if a built-in bias is to be detected, it can be blamed on the difficulty of separating …

Some Ecological Notes On The Alpine Tundra In The Area Of The Juneau Ice Field, Richard T. Ward Jan 1957

Some Ecological Notes On The Alpine Tundra In The Area Of The Juneau Ice Field, Richard T. Ward

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summer of 1949 an introductory study of the vegetation of nunataks and peripheral tundra areas of the Juneau Ice Field was made. The field work constituted a part of the Juneau Ice Field Research Project, which in addition to ecology includes investigations in the fields of geology, glaciology, meteorology, seismology, and cartography. Except for a small plant collection made by a reconnaissance party in the previous summer, the vegetation of this ice field was virtually unknown, as were in fact the other scientific aspects. The expedition of 1949 was the first group to spend an entire summer on …

The Development Of Flowers Within The Ovary Of Raphanus Sativus L., R. L. Hulbary, A. N. Rao, B. E. Michel Jan 1957

The Development Of Flowers Within The Ovary Of Raphanus Sativus L., R. L. Hulbary, A. N. Rao, B. E. Michel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the greenhouses at the State University of Iowa, Radish plants (Raphanus satisvus L.) cultivated for other purposes were discovered to have some abnormal fruits with flowers developing inside in the place of ovules. These abnormal ovaries had normal ovules except for one, near the base, which was replaced by a flower or inflorescence with a perianth and several stamens in various stages of development.

A Test Of "Tendency To Analyze" For Use With College Men, Barbara P. Behrens, Guy H. Miles Jan 1957

A Test Of "Tendency To Analyze" For Use With College Men, Barbara P. Behrens, Guy H. Miles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present study has two purposes: (a) to determine the consistency with which two trained observers independently classify Ss as analyzers or non-analyzers on the basis of their verbal statements concerning their approach to block design problems, and (b) to devise a block design test for college males, the time scores on which will discriminate between analyzers and non-analyzers.

A New Genus And Species Of The Family Diplogyniidae (Acarina), Ellis A. Hicks Jan 1957

A New Genus And Species Of The Family Diplogyniidae (Acarina), Ellis A. Hicks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of the seventeen genera listed by Baker and Wharton (1952) under the family Diplogyniidae, only three had been described before the publication of Trägardh's paper in 1951. The first is Diplogynium Canestrini, 1888 (= Anoplocelaeno Berlese, 1910), of which the type is Diplogynium acuminatum Canestrini, 1888. A study of the description by Canestrini (1888) reveals a lack of information essential for present-day purposes of comparison and classification, especially as it pertains to shape and arrangement of ventral plates and the numbers and distribution of the hairs on these plates. His illustration of D. acuminatum suggests a characteristic placement of the …

Mental Health Research In A Psychiatric Setting, Irwin J. Knoff Jan 1957

Mental Health Research In A Psychiatric Setting, Irwin J. Knoff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Modern psychiatric facilities are usually staffed by representatives of psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy. While each group has in one way or another indicated interest in research, the current overwhelming need for treatment and the dearth of professionally trained personnel have made it necessary for many workers to neglect research activities almost entirely. By tradition and purpose, most psychiatric hospitals focus on service functions and the clinician in this setting is expected to accept this as his principal responsibility. Too often research is viewed as a luxury to be enjoyed sometime in the future when …

Mathematics Training For The Exceptional Student, Fred Robertson Jan 1957

Mathematics Training For The Exceptional Student, Fred Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is a report on a training program for gifted students at the Iowa State College which was initiated in 1946 and has continued with variations to the present. The aim of this program is unique as such programs go. It may be stated thus: The aim is for the gifted student to attain .a satisfactory performance level in a period of time shorter than the normal. In general the programming called for combining algebra and trigonometry in one quarter. Thus the time spent to complete the calculus is five quarters instead of the normal six.
