Vegetative And Floral Development Of The Oat Plant As Influenced By Clipping And Nitrogen Fertilization, F. P. Gardner, S. C. Wiggans Jan 1957

Vegetative And Floral Development Of The Oat Plant As Influenced By Clipping And Nitrogen Fertilization, F. P. Gardner, S. C. Wiggans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Grazing small grains at early stages of growth is a common practice throughout much of the United States. In the South grazing of small grains is a means of providing both high quality forage and grain from the same plantings. Mechanical clipping has been practiced in some areas for its secondary effect of reduced lodging by decreasing the plant height. Although clipping oats in Iowa is not common, there is interest in the practice as a possible means of reducing lodging.

Introductory Botany In State Supported Institutions, M. A. Adansi Jan 1957

Introductory Botany In State Supported Institutions, M. A. Adansi

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the largest responsibilities of botanists to their science should be in the field of teaching. If the importance of botany in the curricula of colleges and universities is to be maintained then it is obligatory to study teaching problems critically, and to undertake periodic objective evaluations of teaching methods, practices, and procedures. Graduate students are prospective teachers who will assume responsibility for providing basic training in plant science. Since many gain their first teaching experience as assistants, introductory botany should be well taught in order to imbue them with the proper attitudes and skills requisite to their profession. …

The Effect Of Low Levels Of Diethylstilbestrol And Plant Estrogens Upon Performance Of Fattening Lambs, C. D. Story, W. H. Hale, E. W. Cheng, Wise Burroughs Jan 1957

The Effect Of Low Levels Of Diethylstilbestrol And Plant Estrogens Upon Performance Of Fattening Lambs, C. D. Story, W. H. Hale, E. W. Cheng, Wise Burroughs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The excellent feeding properties of good quality legume hay and certain vegetable oil meals have long been recognized by the livestock producer. The observed feeding values of these feedstuffs cannot be attributed entirely to their classical nutrient compositions. It has been long suspected that they contain unidentified .factors that are stimulatory to growth.

Right-Left Discrimination And Finger Localization In Schizophrenic Subjects, Leonard D. Goodstein Jan 1957

Right-Left Discrimination And Finger Localization In Schizophrenic Subjects, Leonard D. Goodstein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Much interest has been evidenced recently in right-left discrimination and finger localization tasks as techniques for demonstrating behavioral impairment in patients with known cerebral disease or injury. Defective performance by brain injured patients on both types of tasks has been described in numerous case reports (cf. 3) and has· been demonstrated in experimentally-produced cerebral dysfunction (1). In a systematic study of the incidence of defective performance in brain-injured and control patients, Benton and Cohen (2) found that the brain-injured patients, who did not suffer from serious general intellectual deficit, showed significant impairment in finger-localization performance when compared to the matched …

A Comparison Of The Floras Of Southwestern Wisconsin And Northeastern Iowa, Thomas G. Hartley Jan 1957

A Comparison Of The Floras Of Southwestern Wisconsin And Northeastern Iowa, Thomas G. Hartley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Botanically and geologically, one of the most interesting areas in the Upper Middle West is the "Driftless Area." Covering 15,000 square miles of southwestern Wisconsin and adjacent Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota, this area is about twice the size of the state of New Jersey. With the exception of certain marginal areas such as northeastern Iowa, the "Driftless Area" was apparently not covered by a continental glacier during the periodic glaciation of the Pleistocene epoch. These marginal areas are believed to have been glaciated during the earliest of these periods, the Nebraskan, and most of that resulting drift has been lost …

Portland Cement Contents Required To Stabilize Eastern And Western Iowa Loess, R. L. Handy, D. T. Davidson Jan 1957

Portland Cement Contents Required To Stabilize Eastern And Western Iowa Loess, R. L. Handy, D. T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Because of existing and predicted future shortages of road-building aggregates, the Iowa State Highway Commission has for several years sponsored research programs to find satisfactory substitutes. A major part of these investigations has been to investigate possible chemical treatments to waterproof and harden natural soils. In locations of most critical aggregate shortages in Iowa, loess, a fine silt soil, is often the major surficial material, and present investigations have been concerned mainly with loess in Iowa. During successive project years different loess soil areas in Iowa have been studied, first to determine petrographic and engineering properties of the soils and …

Fast Neutron Breeder, J. M. Finan Jan 1957

Fast Neutron Breeder, J. M. Finan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the fundamental reasons for developing methods of power generation utilizing nuclear fission as the heat source is to extend the world's supply of energy resources beyond those available in the conventional fuels; coal, oil and gas. The only naturally occurring isotope which can sustain a chain reaction is U-235. In the fertile materials U-238 and Th-232, there is a possibility of magnifying the supply of nuclear energy by several orders of magnitude. In certain types of reactors, it is possible to produce more fissionable material than is consumed in the production of heat. This phenomenon is called breeding …

Effect Of The Prevailing Speed Law Type On The Traffic Fatality Rate In The U. S., Clifford O. Swanson Jan 1957

Effect Of The Prevailing Speed Law Type On The Traffic Fatality Rate In The U. S., Clifford O. Swanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to ascertain what relationship, if any, exists between the several types of speed laws used in the United States and the traffic death rate per 100 million vehicle miles of travel during the 20-year period, 1935 to 1954. Any association found between speed laws and traffic death rates during this time should provide evidence from which a reasonably substantial inference may be drawn that will help to decide which statute type, or variation, that by its operation has proved most effective in reducing traffic fatalities. The null hypothesis that no relation between speed law …

The Occurrence Of Blindness In The Black Bullhead, Lctalurus Melas (Rafinesque), Of East Okoboji Lake, Iowa, James Mayhew Jan 1957

The Occurrence Of Blindness In The Black Bullhead, Lctalurus Melas (Rafinesque), Of East Okoboji Lake, Iowa, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summer of 1954 anglers reported numerous blind bullheads at East Okoboji Lake, Dickinson County, Iowa. Eventually one of these specimens was brought to the State Conservation Commission Biology Laboratory for examination. Blindness, of course, is not uncommon in fishes, but this type was apparently due to the complete absence of functional eyes. Gunter (1956) has reported on a red drum, from Abazon Bay, Texas, with a similar sightless condition. With evidence suggesting that blindness was rather common in East Okoboji, special attention was given to the bullheads captured during the annual fisheries survey of the lake. From the …

Angler Harvest In The Summers Of 1953 To 1956 At Clear Lake, Iowa, Charles J. Di Costanzo, Richard L. Ridenhour Jan 1957

Angler Harvest In The Summers Of 1953 To 1956 At Clear Lake, Iowa, Charles J. Di Costanzo, Richard L. Ridenhour

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Clear Lake is a large ( 3 ,643 acres), shallow ( 20 feet, maximum depth) eutrophic lake located in north central Iowa. Most warm water game fishes common to the Midwest are found in this lake (Bailey and Harrison, 1945). The Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit initiated a creel census in 19 5 3 to determine the harvest of fish by anglers at Clear Lake. During the last four years several changes have been observed in the catch composition and fishing effort.

New Intermediates For The Synthesis Of Androgenic Groups, Lester Yoder Jan 1957

New Intermediates For The Synthesis Of Androgenic Groups, Lester Yoder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A large number of compounds of steroid origin with variable androgenic activity have been described since Butenandt and Tscherning (1) first isolated androsterone in 1934. Later following the nitrogen balance experiments of Kochakian (2) with the more active androgen, testosterone, an anabolic activity was recognized as a closely asociated property of androgens. Moreover this anabolic activity in some of the newer steroid androgens has now been found to deviate independently from their androgenic activity (3) (4). These developments are of great interest not only in the production of more efficient gains in animal nutrition but also in the maintenance of …

The Effect Of Diethylstilbestrol On The Digestibility Of Dry Matter And Nitrogen And On Nitrogen Retention In Lambs, C. D. Story, P. G. Homeyer, W. H. Hale Jan 1957

The Effect Of Diethylstilbestrol On The Digestibility Of Dry Matter And Nitrogen And On Nitrogen Retention In Lambs, C. D. Story, P. G. Homeyer, W. H. Hale

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although the usefulness of orally administered diethylstilbestrol (stilbestrol) in increasing weight gains and feed efficiency of fattening cattle has been established, little is known concerning the mechanism by which it exerts its beneficial effect. Two possible modes of action may exist. First, the stilbestrol may have some effect on the rumen microorganisms which might cause an increased digestion of feed in the rumen. Brooks et al. (1954) have shown that stilbestrol increased the digestibility of cellulose in the artificial rumen. They also obtained increased cellulose and protein digestion in sheep when stilbestrol was fed. However the levels fed the sheep …

Comparison Of Laboratory And Field Studies In The Estimation Of Driving Speed, Virtus W. Suhr Jan 1957

Comparison Of Laboratory And Field Studies In The Estimation Of Driving Speed, Virtus W. Suhr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Judgment of speed has long been a matter of interest to students of highway safety. Forbes (1) early devised an apparatus which was used in the laboratory for measuring judgment of speed in the longitudinal direction. His apparatus consisted of a long roadway on which metal tape carried small cars. A control car was allowed to travel in traffic on the right side of the road. At such times as there was danger of a collision the operator was required to turn sharply in order to avoid colliding with another vehicle. The number of times that he failed to dodge …

Age And Growth Of River Carpsucker In Des Moines River, Iowa, Marvin Buchholz Jan 1957

Age And Growth Of River Carpsucker In Des Moines River, Iowa, Marvin Buchholz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although the northern river carpsucker, Carpiodes carpio carpio (Rafmesque), is one of the more abundant species of fish in the Des Moines River, it is not a well known fish. Few laymen are acquainted with it. Precise information on its life history is limited, and its ecological role has not been determined. The river carpsucker is rarely utilized by commercial or sport fishermen and for this reason is usually classified as a rough fish. A few carpsuckers enter the commercial fishery of the Mississippi River (Barnickol and Starrett, 1951) . Some are taken by sport fishermen using extra small hooks …

Mixed Colonies In Ants: Third Report, R. L. King, R. M. Sallee Jan 1957

Mixed Colonies In Ants: Third Report, R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are two species of ants with deep clypeal fossae, belonging to the rufa group of the genus Formica, found in the region around the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in northwestern Iowa. One of these, Formica fossaceps Buren, is almost hairless, especially on the dorsal surface, while the other, Formica obscuriventris clivia Creighton, is very hairy all over, with hairs even on the scapes. The latter species was reported erroneously as Formica areas comptula Wheeler in our earlier papers on mixed colonies (King, '49; King and Sallee '51). We have recorded large worker ants with vestigial wings in both species, and …
