A Preliminary Investigation Of The Relationship Between Gsr, Heart Rate Change And Eyelid Conditioning, W. N. Runquist, L. E. Ross Jan 1958

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Relationship Between Gsr, Heart Rate Change And Eyelid Conditioning, W. N. Runquist, L. E. Ross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies of classical defense conditioning at the Iowa laboratory have been concerned largely with the relation of drive level (D) to level of performance in conditioning. According to the theoretical formulation offered of the results of these studies, the associative factor, H, and drive factor, D, combine multiplicatively to determine reaction potential, E, which in turn determines the strength of the response, i.e., R = f (E) = f(H) X f(D). It has further been assumed that D is a function of (a) the intensity of the UCS, and (b) the score on the Manifest Anxiety (A) scale (8). …

Pilot Knob Bog As A Habitat, Paul E. Smith, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1958

Pilot Knob Bog As A Habitat, Paul E. Smith, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purposes of this paper are to introduce some of the physical characteristics and to summarize the geological and recent history of a northern Iowa Sphagnum bog. The marshy portion of Dead Man's Lake, Pilot Knob State Park, was referred to as a bog by L. H. Pammel (1928) and described as a sphagnum mat by Grant and Thorne (1954). The park is located on the Hancock side of the Hancock-Winnebago county border in sections three and four of Ellington township. It is four miles east of Forest City.

Salsola Collina Pall., New To Iowa, William Schapaugh Jan 1958

Salsola Collina Pall., New To Iowa, William Schapaugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In October, 1957, a specimen of Salsola was collected in Ames, Story County, Iowa, on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, right-of-way embankment at the Sixth Street underpass. This new plant appeared distinct from the various varieties of the well-known Salsola kali L., and search in the Iowa State College herbarium failed to reveal other specimens. Subsequent examination of specimens of Salsola in the herbarium of the State University of Iowa likewise revealed no specimens of this species from Iowa. There seems to be no previous published reports of any species of Salsola other than S. kali from the state of …

The Nature Of Viola Missouriensis Greene, Norman H. Russell Jan 1958

The Nature Of Viola Missouriensis Greene, Norman H. Russell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the most distinctive of the stemless blue violets of the upper midwest is Viola missouriensis Greene, the Missouri Violet. It is one of the approximately twenty-eight species of the Subsection Boreali-Americanae, Section Nominium, a group of violets somewhat notorious for their propensity for interspecific hybridization. Population studies were initiated in 1956 to define the members of this group more accurately and to determine the effect of hybridization upon their taxonomy and evolution. The Subsection Boreali-Americanae includes the so-called "stemless" (acaulescent), blue-flowered species. Within this group of species, two types of violets can be roughly distinguished: the entire-leaved species …

The Effects Of The Chemical Mutagen, Diepoxybutane, On Clintland Oats, Charles F. Murphy, Fred L. Patterson Jan 1958

The Effects Of The Chemical Mutagen, Diepoxybutane, On Clintland Oats, Charles F. Murphy, Fred L. Patterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The objective of any mutation breeding program is to create desirable genetic diversity. With the spectrum of mutations from ionizing radiations becoming somewhat defined, several workers have investigated the use of chemical mutagens as a method of broadening the range.

A Comparison Of Plasma Protein Fractions By Kjeldahl And Biuret Analysis And Refractive Index Measurements, R. William Knouse, J. I. Routh Jan 1958

A Comparison Of Plasma Protein Fractions By Kjeldahl And Biuret Analysis And Refractive Index Measurements, R. William Knouse, J. I. Routh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In electrophoretic studies of serum and plasma the concentration of protein in the various fractions is often expressed in absolute values. These are commonly obtained by calculation from the percentage distribution of the components and the total protein content of the serum or plasma. Although this practice is widespread there is no assurance that the values obtained reflect a true measure of the protein content of the individual components. It is readily apparent from the divergent results obtained by the technique of paper electrophoresis that the major components of serum contain varying concentrations of protein, lipids and carbohydrates and exhibit …

The Formation Of Ice Platters, Robert Duncan Enzmann Jan 1958

The Formation Of Ice Platters, Robert Duncan Enzmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper pertains to the formation of ice platters. To the writer's knowledge, this phenomenon has not been previously described; however, it is not unknown since Professor Backlund of Uppsala, Sweden, the first man to prepare geologic maps of the Arctic coast of Siberia, has stated that he saw similar formations in northern Angaraland, Siberia. Probably workers in the North American Arctic have also seen these curious platters. The ice platters were discovered by the writer in the summer of 1955 when he worked on sites for the DEW (distant early warning) Line. The place where the observations were made …

Use Of Phosphates In Soil Stabilization, T. Demirel, J. V. Roegiers, D. T. Davidson Jan 1958

Use Of Phosphates In Soil Stabilization, T. Demirel, J. V. Roegiers, D. T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The use of phosphates for stabilizing soil to be used for road building is a new development. Lyons (1) apparently was one of the first to have appreciated the possibility. He reports that compacted plastic clay soils containing about 2 per cent phosphoric acid have greatly improved resistance to water and weathering, but he gives no explanation of the mechanism of soil-phosphoric acid stabilization. In agriculture it has been known for some time that phosphates are fixed in soil (2). It is also known that sodium phosphates may be used to disperse soils in water for particle size analysis (3). …

Miniature Triaxial Shear Testing Of A Quaternary Ammonium Chloride Stabilized Loess, J. M. Hoover, D. T. Davidson, J. V. Roegiers Jan 1958

Miniature Triaxial Shear Testing Of A Quaternary Ammonium Chloride Stabilized Loess, J. M. Hoover, D. T. Davidson, J. V. Roegiers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Compressive bearing characteristics of a stabilized soil may be determined by several methods, in each of which the soil specimens are loaded to failure. The resistance to failure of the stabilized soil depends on the maximum cohesion and internal friction between the soil particles after compaction. The Triaxial Shear Test is employed to provide a measure of these two soil properties. In most highway base and sub-base design problems, or in any similar soil foundation study, the capacity of the underlying soil to withstand and support vertical and/or lateral forces is directly related to the cohesive and frictional forces present …

A Cytochemical Effect Of Estrogens Upon The Reticular Tissue, R. F. Ruth Jan 1958

A Cytochemical Effect Of Estrogens Upon The Reticular Tissue, R. F. Ruth

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most of the literature about the in vivo effects of estrogens seems to be primarily concerned with vertebrate reproduction. This emphasis is a natural extension of the earliest recognition of induced estrus. However, it has obscured some reports of the effects of estrogens on organs and tissues which have no known reproductive or post-reproductive functions. The main purpose of this report is to draw attention to one such case.

Effects Of Dietary Free C18 Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Dl-Methionine Choline Chloride Mixture On Plasma Cholesterol Of The Male Albino Rat, Erwin T. Janssen Jan 1958

Effects Of Dietary Free C18 Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Dl-Methionine Choline Chloride Mixture On Plasma Cholesterol Of The Male Albino Rat, Erwin T. Janssen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationship of dietary fatty acids and the cholesterol levels found in serum and liver is, and has been, under study by many investigators. The relationships involved are undoubtedly intricate and more complex than most investigators seem to imply. Although Jones et al. imply a close relationship between rats and man in dietary requirements and habits, it is good to keep in mind differences that are intrinsic to both man and experimental animals. Effects produced on experimental animals and those produced upon man in dietary studies in some cases may be vastly different. With this in mind, an attempt will …

Textural Variations In Some Iowa Limestones, Donald L. Biggs Jan 1958

Textural Variations In Some Iowa Limestones, Donald L. Biggs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Textural properties of limestones assume a large importance in determining the origin of the rocks. Limestones are usually called detrital rocks if they possess oolitic, pelleted or coquoinoid texture (Pettijohn, 1957, p. 401). This criterion as to whether the rock was formed by current-sorted detritus or direct chemical precipitation is valid if, and only if, the rock texture has remained essentially unchanged during diagenesis. Because many of the Mississippi limestones of Iowa display pellet textures, it is desirable to determine, if possible, the true nature of this texture, and its mode of origin, and whether it reflects a depositional or …

Fault At Five Springs Creek, Wyoming, John R. Wingert Jan 1958

Fault At Five Springs Creek, Wyoming, John R. Wingert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As part of a thesis project, field work was done on the west flank of the northern Bighorn Mountains, Wyoming. One of the more interesting structures in the area was an eastward dipping reverse fault, at Five Springs Creek. Such faults are common in this part of the mountains, in contrast to westward dipping thrust faults on the east flank.

Cholinesterase Inhibition In Vitro By Extracts Of Potato, Wallace H. Orgell, Kunda A. Vaidya, P. A. Dahm Jan 1958

Cholinesterase Inhibition In Vitro By Extracts Of Potato, Wallace H. Orgell, Kunda A. Vaidya, P. A. Dahm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While attempting to assay cholinesterase inhibitory organic phosphorus insecticide residues in various plant tissues, it became apparent that the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) presented a unique problem. It was observed that aqueous extracts of potato tubers or foliage, which had not been treated with insecticide, still gave a positive test by the method employed. Hence, a more thorough study of the nature of the interference was made.

Notes On The Age And Growth Of Spirit Lake Yellow Pikeperch (Stizostedion V. Vitreum), Earl T. Rose

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most all research on life histories of fish in which age and growth are considered is based on the theory that annual rings are formed on the scales which can be counted to determine age, and that scale diameters increase proportionately with the length of the fish which permits the calculation of growth for each year of life. In the spring of 1947 a total of 556 adult yellow pikeperch, Stizostedion v. vitreum (Mitchill), commonly known as the walleye, was taken from State hatchery operated gill-nets, tagged and released in Spirit Lake as a part of a population appraisal (Rose, …

Age And Sex In Relation To Fatal Traffic Accidents For 1957 - A Continuation Study, Lillian C. Schwenk Jan 1958

Age And Sex In Relation To Fatal Traffic Accidents For 1957 - A Continuation Study, Lillian C. Schwenk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By implication this is a progress report of a study of fatal traffic accidents in Iowa. The purpose is to develop a system for improving methods of analysis of accident data. Thus it was decided to tabulate fatality victims each year by age and sex and also by classification as to whether the person was a driver, passenger, or pedestrian in an attempt to assign responsibility for mishaps.

Utilization Of Gizzard Shad By Game Fishes, Joseph H. Kutkuhn Jan 1958

Utilization Of Gizzard Shad By Game Fishes, Joseph H. Kutkuhn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Historically, the gizzard shad's, Dorosoma cepedianum (Le Seuer), role in the management of warm-water sport fisheries has evolved amid considerable controversy. Initially recognized as potential forage for piscivorous species in suitable waters (e.g. see Lagler and Applegate 1943 and Eschmeyer 1944), this species is currently maligned because of its "probable" competitive effects on desirable species (e.g. see Jenkins 1957), suggested no doubt by its great capacity for attaining and maintaining populations of mass proportions. Prevailing management practices in most areas call for its control if not its elimination (e.g. see Bowers 1955). It is interesting to note that evidence has …

Effects Of Motivation On The Performance Of Difficult And Easy Motor Tasks, Albert J. Macek Jan 1958

Effects Of Motivation On The Performance Of Difficult And Easy Motor Tasks, Albert J. Macek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine whether high motivational level facilitates performance on an easy motor task and impairs performance on a difficult one. The problem is suggested by the theoretical formulations of Hull (4) and Spence (12) and the experiments done within this framework. The theory states that a response tendency is some multiplicative combination of associative and motivational factors. The most obvious consequence of this formulation is that as motivational level increases, performance will increase. But this applies only to the simplest situations, in which there is but one response tendency to be augmented by increased …

Three Attempts To Determine The Effects Of An Appetitive Secondary Reinforcer On The Extinction Of An Avoidance Response, Harold Babb, Coral A. Fitterman, James H. Paulson Jan 1958

Three Attempts To Determine The Effects Of An Appetitive Secondary Reinforcer On The Extinction Of An Avoidance Response, Harold Babb, Coral A. Fitterman, James H. Paulson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study by Pavlov (5, p. 30) indicated that normally painful stimuli applied while hungry dogs were feeding produced less overall avoidance behavior than at times when they were not feeding. In a still earlier study, Jones (3) reported that extinction of avoidance to a feared stimulus was hastened by gradually introducing the stimulus while the child subject was eating. More recently, Farber (1) has presented evidence that feeding in the presence of anxiety-producing cues hastened later extinction to those cues as compared to control animals which did not receive the feeding experience. In Miller's words (4): "Eating and …

Rapid Nuclear Staining Method For Frozen Sections, Robert Dzmura, Peter Gray Jan 1958

Rapid Nuclear Staining Method For Frozen Sections, Robert Dzmura, Peter Gray

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

To be of value, the frozen section technique must be simple, fast and must yield slides showing good definition. Most of the methods currently in use are rapid enough but fail to provide clear details; other methods give good definition but are too time-consuming. The method described here is fast, shows good details and results in permanent slides. It makes use of the stain coelestine blue B, employed earlier by Proescher and others (1946) as a nuclear stain in combination with azophloxine as a cytoplasmic stain. The mixture of the two dyes is unstable and has to be made up …
