Influence Of A Hypotensive Agent Upon Coronary Blood Flow And Cardiac Metabolism, Steven M. Horvath, Enid A. Farrand, R. Farrand Jan 1958

Influence Of A Hypotensive Agent Upon Coronary Blood Flow And Cardiac Metabolism, Steven M. Horvath, Enid A. Farrand, R. Farrand

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There has been considerable doubt as to the direct relationship of coronary blood flow and the level of arterial or perfusing pressure forcing blood into the vessels of the heart muscle. Attempts to delineate clearly these relationships have been complicated by concomitant effects induced by circulating epinephrine. The drug dibenzyline2 makes it possible to evaluate the influence of hypotension on coronary blood flow. Dibenzyline injection induces a fall in blood pressure while maintaining essentially unchanged the cardiac output and the cerebral blood flow (1).

Helminths Of Fishes From Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, Fred Paul Meyer Jan 1958

Helminths Of Fishes From Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, Fred Paul Meyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1953 it was observed that the fishes taken by anglers in Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, were "grubby" or wormy" and hence considered unfit for human consumption. This study was undertaken to ascertain in greater detail the parasite fauna of that area. Work was begun in the summer of 1954 and collections were made intermittently through the summers of 1954 and 1955. All fish were examined at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Lake Okoboji, Iowa. Final identifications of the parasites were completed at Iowa State College during 1956 and 1957.

Studies Of A Seedling Blight Of Soybeans And The Etiology Of The Causal Fungus, Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora, John Dunleavy Jan 1958

Studies Of A Seedling Blight Of Soybeans And The Etiology Of The Causal Fungus, Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora, John Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora is a fungus that can infect soybeans (Glycine max) and cause development of stem cankers that usually result in girdling of stems and death of plants. Stem canker disease of soybean was first described by Welch and Gilman (11) when they differentiated the stem canker fungus from D. phaseolorum var. sojae, which causes pod and stem blight of soybean. Welch and Gilman first identified the causal organism of stem canker as D. phaseolorum var. batatatis, a fungus described by Harter and Field (6) as being pathogenic on sweet potato. Athow and Caldwell (1) revised the variety …

Further Studies Of Loess In Iowa: Thickness, Clay Content, And Engineering Classification, J. A. Hansen Jr., A. R. Dahl, D. T. Davidson Jan 1958

Further Studies Of Loess In Iowa: Thickness, Clay Content, And Engineering Classification, J. A. Hansen Jr., A. R. Dahl, D. T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is a continuation of the work previously reported by Dahl, Handy and Davidson (1), and summarizes currently available information on properties of the Wisconsin loess. New areas of investigation are in northwest and eastern Iowa. Depth measurements and samples in the bluffs region were obtained mostly from the traverses of Hutton (2) and Davidson, et al. (3). Riggs (4) continued these traverses and the northwest-southeast traverses of Lyon, et al. (5), and established a grid-like sample pattern in southwest Iowa. Dahl (6) and Hansen (7) extended the grid eastward to the Mississippi River. Data on northwest Iowa …

The Self-Identified Problems Of College Students, John A. Bath Jan 1958

The Self-Identified Problems Of College Students, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Analyses of college students' problems have been made from time to time for various purposes. One of the primary motives seems to have been to use such information to improve counseling services. Both Carr (1) and Stone (4) used the Mooney Problem Check List as the source of information about student problems at the college level. Carr compared the problems of 300 superior college students with 300 inferior students. Although superior students had fewer problems, they had an equivalent number in seven of the eleven problem areas when compared with the inferior students. Superior students were more concerned with long-range …

Morphologic Variation In The Genus Brassica, Jacqueline Patman Jan 1958

Morphologic Variation In The Genus Brassica, Jacqueline Patman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The genus Brassica, a member of the Family Cruciferae, contains approximately fifty species, including experimental forms. It is one of the more important genera of the family, and includes such economic plants as cabbage, turnip, kale, rutabaga, cauliflower, broccoli and table mustards. The entire genus is indigenous to the Old World, and many species have been cultivated since very early times.

A Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Clinton, Jackson, And Jones Counties, Iowa, Tom S. Cooperrider Jan 1958

A Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Clinton, Jackson, And Jones Counties, Iowa, Tom S. Cooperrider

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study was made to determine the nature of the vascular flora of Clinton, Jackson, and Jones Counties, Iowa, which had been relatively unexplored botanically (Thorne, 1954). Examination of specimens from the herbaria of the Davenport Public Museum, Iowa State College, and the State University of Iowa yielded a total of 675 species from the three counties. Specimens of the following numbers of species were found from the individual counties: Clinton County... 231 Jackson County... 142 Jones County... 560. The collections from Jones County were mainly those of R. G. Brown who reported (Brown, 1949) finding 492 species in the …

The Progression Of Spring In Southeastern Iowa, Lloyd W. Biard, Carlo M. Ignoffo Jan 1958

The Progression Of Spring In Southeastern Iowa, Lloyd W. Biard, Carlo M. Ignoffo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Is this spring earlier or later than usual? When is the best time to plant? If the ground-hog comes out of his hole today will he see his shadow? Questions such as these have stimulated people to look for and record the occurrence of natural events either as hobbies, rules of thumb for farming or as methods of predicting and recording the arrival of spring. Natural events such as general thaw, leafing of trees and shrubs and plant-flowering have been used in the past by Jaques (1924, 1944), Dodd et al. (1934) and Hodson (1951). In many instances one biological …

A New Method Of Obtaining Systemic Infection Of Soybeans By Peronospora Manshurica (Naoum.) Syd., Vernyl D. Pederson Jan 1958

A New Method Of Obtaining Systemic Infection Of Soybeans By Peronospora Manshurica (Naoum.) Syd., Vernyl D. Pederson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Downy mildew, caused by Peronospora manshurica (Naoum.) Syd. is a relatively common disease of soybeans. First symptoms appear as indefinite lighter green areas on the upper surface of the leaf. Later, these areas become more chlorotic and appear angular, being delimited at the edges by small veins. During periods of heavy dew, the fungus sporulates profusely from the underside of these chlorotic areas. Later in the season, these areas change to well-defined greyish brown lesions with chlorotic borders. Large numbers of oospores of the fungus may be found in the necrotic tissue of these lesions. Oospores in overwintered leaf debris …

Procedures For Laboratory Studies On Wood Decay Resistance, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr. Jan 1958

Procedures For Laboratory Studies On Wood Decay Resistance, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Laboratory studies on wood decay resistance are useful in both research and teaching. These studies have been used extensively to determine decay resistance of tropical woods to wood rot fungi found in the temperate regions of North America (9, 16, 20, 25, 26, 27). The methods have been used or suggested as tools in basic research on fungal ecology (4, 13, 14, 17), abnormal wood (5, 6, 12, 24) and wood variability (8, 21, 22, 28). The techniques also are adapted for use as laboratory exercises in a Plant Pathology course, especially if conducted in conjunction with other laboratory deterioration …

Some Measurements Of Primary Production In East And West Okoboji Lakes, Dickinson County, Iowa, Cornelius I. Weber Jan 1958

Some Measurements Of Primary Production In East And West Okoboji Lakes, Dickinson County, Iowa, Cornelius I. Weber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many methods have been employed to measure the organic production of phytoplankton communities in natural waters. These methods include measurements of, (a) the ash-free weight of seston, (b) the chlorophyll content of the water, (c) phytoplankton abundance, (d) plant volume, (e) oxygen evolution, and (f) the assimilation of carbon-14. The introduction (3) of a simple technique for the application of carbon-14 to production studies has opened the way for a more direct approach to the problem. Because the significance of data obtained by the use of indirect methods is necessarily obscure, production studies frequently employ two or more methods. Although …

Growth And Differentiation Of The Epidermal Wall, R. H. Schieferstein, W. E. Loomis Jan 1958

Growth And Differentiation Of The Epidermal Wall, R. H. Schieferstein, W. E. Loomis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Waxy coatings on leaves and other plant surfaces have been studied since DeBary's early work. Surface wax has assumed additional importance with the advent of systemic and herbicidal sprays. The retention and absorption of these sprays depend upon the waxy coatings and other properties of the epidermis. Earlier publications have pictured the first development of the cuticle and the extrusion of surface wax through it. None of our observations have demonstrated any channels associated with wax extrusion, and we conclude that it permeates the cellulose matrix of the primary epidermal wall in a softened form, which then hardens on the …
