Host-Parasite Relationships Of Spirorchis Elegans Stunkard (Trematoda: Spirorchiidae), Patricia Jena Schroeder, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Twenty-eight turtles collected in northwest Iowa were examined for helminth infections. Spirorchis spp. were encountered in 16 Chrysemys picta belli and 1 Emys blandingi. At least 4 species were found, namely, S. elegans, S. scripta, S. artericoln, and S. pseudemyae. Spirorchis elegans was found in 7 of the 24 painted turtles and was always recovered from the lymphatics and from the sub-mucosa of the esophagus of the host. These specimens were all sexually mature. It appears that the family diagnosis for Spirorchiidae should be extended to include these habitats. Spirorchis pseudemyae was recovered from intestinal washings of C. picta belli …

The Arthropod Soil Fauna Of A Tall Grass Prairie And Adjoining Pasture, T. Edwin Rogers Jan 1959

The Arthropod Soil Fauna Of A Tall Grass Prairie And Adjoining Pasture, T. Edwin Rogers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Soils of a native tall grass prairie and an adjoining grazed pasture in central Oklahoma were studied in an effort to determine some of the major groups of Arthopoda represented in the microfauna, and to see what effect, if any, moderate grazing had upon the animals present. During a period of 12 months, 132 cylindrical samples of soil approximately 3 inches deep and 1.6 inches in diameter were taken. Half came from each area. Animals were separated from the soil by the use of Tullgren funnels. Soil temperatures, moisture content, and volume weight of samples were recorded. From the prairie …

Notes On The Mites Of An Iowa Cave, Michael T. Irvin Jan 1959

Notes On The Mites Of An Iowa Cave, Michael T. Irvin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An investigation was made of some of the environmental factors which are most important in determining the distribution of Acarina in caves. Because of the relative stability of the environment, Bogus Cave, Jones County, Iowa, was selected for the study. A moistened camel's hair brush, an aspirator, and the flotation method were used to collect specimens. Three families of mites (Eupodidae, Ascaidae, and Belbidae) were found; none were troglobites. The data indicate that the mites in Bogus Cave are limited to areas of constant humidity and temperature, a good organic soil cover, relatively small soil particles (100μ to 150μ), and …

Microorganisms Found In Field Specimens Of Diseased Corn Borer Larvae, Earle S. Raun, William R. Lockhart, Russell J. Beers Jan 1959

Microorganisms Found In Field Specimens Of Diseased Corn Borer Larvae, Earle S. Raun, William R. Lockhart, Russell J. Beers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two hundred and eighty-six abnormal, field collected larvae of the European corn borer were examined for the presence of microorganisms which could have caused the abnormality or death. The most common microorganism found was a microsporidian, Perezia pyraustae Paillot. Next most numerous was a group of enterobacteria. Spore forming rods apparently of the genus Bacillus, and fungi belonging to the genera Beauvaria and Metarrhizium were also isolated. An examination of 100 apparently normal pupae revealed that 82 were hosts to Perezia pyraustae and two contained bacteria.

The Use Of Toxaphene As A Fish Poison In Strip Mine Ponds With Varying Physical And Chemical Characteristics, James Mayhew Jan 1959

The Use Of Toxaphene As A Fish Poison In Strip Mine Ponds With Varying Physical And Chemical Characteristics, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fifteen ponds were treated with toxaphene concentrations that varied from 0.01 to 0.1 parts per million. Preliminary studies revealed wide variations in the chemical and physical features of the ponds. Approximately 3,500 pounds of fish were killed. Carp, gizzard shad, and quillback were the most numerous; other species included largemouth bass, bigmouth buffalo, black crappie, black bullhead, bluegill, yellow bass, and channel catfish. Detoxification studies were conducted on five ponds. The first pond detoxified within 90 days; two remained toxic to fishes for 270 days. Factors important to the duration of toxicity are discussed.

Changes In Fish Populations And Food Habits Of Yellow Bass In North Twin Lake, 1956-1958, Joe E. Collier Jan 1959

Changes In Fish Populations And Food Habits Of Yellow Bass In North Twin Lake, 1956-1958, Joe E. Collier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fish population studies initiated in 1953 indicated that most species were on the increase until the winter kill of 1955. In 1956, populations were below normal; in 1957 there was an increase in most species, followed by a decrease in 1958. Studies during 1953 and 1954 showed that the food of adult yellow bass consisted to a great extent of young-of-the-year yellow bass and gizzard shad, along- with insects. During the summers of 1956, 1957, and 1958, forage fish were of very minor importance in the diet of yellow bass; they fed mainly on immature insects and minute crustacea.

Growth Of The Walleye In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, James C. Schmulbach Jan 1959

Growth Of The Walleye In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, James C. Schmulbach

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Even though the habitat is marginal, a considerable fishery exists for walleyes in the Des Moines River. Tagging studies indicate the annual rate of harvest to be about 10 percent. The size of the population is evidently limited by frequent fish kills due to high water temperatures in the summer and oxygen depletion in the winter. Considerable variation in growth exists within age groups and between year classes. Possible explanations include: (1) sexual differences, especially between fish over four years old; (2) frequent fish kills which result in vacancies in the habitat; (3) low water levels during certain years; and …

Evaluation Of Effectiveness Of Pheasant Flushing Bars In Iowa Hayfields, Eugene D. Klonglan, Russel L. Robbins, Bromfield L. Ridley Jan 1959

Evaluation Of Effectiveness Of Pheasant Flushing Bars In Iowa Hayfields, Eugene D. Klonglan, Russel L. Robbins, Bromfield L. Ridley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A three year study on 394 acres of hayfields revealed an overall reduction in hen mortality of 38 percent through the use of flushing bars. This was significant at the .01 probability level. For the individual years, only 1954 showed a significant reduction in hayfield mortality, the observed 54 percent decrease being significant at the .05 probability level. The bars were most effective in flushing hens that were in the hay hut not sitting on the nest at the instant before the mower passed. A large proportion of hens on the nest was saved if incubation had not been started. …

A Study Of The Action Of 1-Pentanol In The Debromination Of 1, 2-Dibromoethane By Zinc, Jerry Frederick Janssen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The fact that rapid evolution of ethene took place at moderately low temperatures in the presence of 1-pentanol suggested that the alcohol perhaps played a less evident role in the reaction than was previously supposed. The problem of this study is to elucidate the role of 1-pentanol in the reaction of 1, 2-dibromoethane with zinc .

Distributive education is a nation-wide training program designed to prepare workers for more effective distribution of goods and services through programs of instruction at both the adult and secondary levels.1 Reimbursable distributive education was initiated in Iowa in 1937. In 1958 Iowa had twenty-four high school cooperative part-time programs and ten adult programs in operation.

Empathic Ability Compared As To Environmental Setting And Concept Of Measurement, Alice Jane Anderson Jan 1959

Empathic Ability Compared As To Environmental Setting And Concept Of Measurement, Alice Jane Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the turn of the century there has been a growing controversy as to the definition and significance of the term "empathy" in the separate fields of esthetics and psychology. People concerned with both areas use a similar basic definition - the ability to "feel into" an object or another person. It is in the attainment of this ability and the ways in which we can use it that the definitions vary. In the esthetic sense, empathy is thought of as a process of identification and projection. A person watching a play, for instance, projects himself into the actions and …

A Study Of The Effects Of The 1958 Junior High School Seminar In Science And Mathematics, Iowa State Teachers College, Upon The Pupils’ Attitudes Toward And Interest In Science And Mathematics, William Richards Babcock Jan 1959

A Study Of The Effects Of The 1958 Junior High School Seminar In Science And Mathematics, Iowa State Teachers College, Upon The Pupils’ Attitudes Toward And Interest In Science And Mathematics, William Richards Babcock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The current emphasis which the "atomic age" has placed upon the education of "gifted" or "talented" pupils in science and mathematics has provided educators with an opportunity to devise and implement new and unique programs in the elementary and secondary schools. Educators have utilized two approaches in meeting the challenge--acceleration and enrichment. Many secondary schools in all parts of the United States are offering pupils opportunity to take more advanced course work than the traditional curriculum had allowed. College courses, as well as high school subjects, are being offered at the high school level both during the regular academic year …

A Proposed Guide For Secretaries For Use In Maintaining The Financial Records Of A School Lunch Program, Lavern Elmer Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the greatest advances in reoent years in the area of student health, in both the elementary and secondary schools of our nation. has been the development of the school lunch program. The impetus for this program in the United States came during the year 1933 when the Federal Emergency Relief Administration authorized relief funds for the feeding of school children. At that time many schools throughout the country began serving a hot dish--sometimes a bowl of soup to be eaten with the student's home-packed lunch. By 1934 there were approximately 300,000 school children being served at school.

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction For Use In High School World History, Franklin D. Carlson Jan 1959

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction For Use In High School World History, Franklin D. Carlson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

High school teachers of World History have an opportunity to enrich their students' learning by suggesting or requiring the reading of historical fiction appropriate to their courses. Much of the world's literature may be classified as historical fiction, having value for the student of history as well as for the student of literature. Historical fiction may be used as an extension of the regular textbook, to enlarge the individual student's understandings of historical characters, events, and time periods which may receive scant treatment in the regular textbook. For many students, a fictional account of the past may be more palatable, …

Linear Programming In High School Mathematics, Vernon Earl Cotter Jan 1959

Linear Programming In High School Mathematics, Vernon Earl Cotter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"Modern mathematics," a term associated with experimental and revised programs for the teaching of mathematics, should be interpreted only in part as meaning new subject matter. It is true that modern mathematics is associated with such subject matter as the theory of sets and the revision of the definitions of 'relation' and 'function.' But it also connotes a new spirit, a new method of approach, and a new organization of material and problems. Also it may retain much of the traditional subject matter. Of course the order of presentation may be changed and traditional subject matter bounds may be disregarded …

An Evaluation Of The Activity And Group Guidance Program In Roosevelt Junior High School In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Germaine Hausladen Jan 1959

An Evaluation Of The Activity And Group Guidance Program In Roosevelt Junior High School In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Germaine Hausladen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the new paths being tried by the Cedar Rapids schools is the home room guidance and activity program. The plan was the result of a two year study of a committee of teachers working under the supervision of the Director of Secondary Education. Considering the time and effort spent on the project, it is only reasonable to assume that there should be some measure of evaluation to see how the objectives are being met. That evaluation is the purpose of this research.

The Counting House, A Play In Three Acts, Robert Joseph Helland

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This play concerns a revolution that occurs in a small, independent nation. The nation is called Hebrus, and it is a jungle country. One great industry has made the land prosperous, an industry founded by a brave, hard, and ambitious American. His name was Gemaedan. The wealth that the industry gave him, and the power that was hie as its owner made him a proud man. The people of Hebrus loved him. As he grew older, and wealthier, he returned to America. He died there, leaving to hi son , Max, a symbol of his power: the machete he had …

A Study Of Emotion In Selected Plays Of George Bernard Shaw, Winifred Hager Holkeboer Jan 1959

A Study Of Emotion In Selected Plays Of George Bernard Shaw, Winifred Hager Holkeboer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of an infinite number of descriptions of George Bernard Shaw portrays him as a young Irishman who descended upon England with broom in hand, and, finding it full of philistine abominations, proceeded to make things lively for his self-satisfied host by sweeping the stables clean. Any sensible estimate of this remarkable man must at least admit to his having left England a different place than it· was when he found it. Indeed, his influence has extended beyond the bounds of his time and place; he stood like· a great cosmic giant astride the span of a near-century-one foot planted …

A Survey Of Industrial Arts In The Public Schools Of North Dakota, Milo Norman Sulentic Jan 1959

A Survey Of Industrial Arts In The Public Schools Of North Dakota, Milo Norman Sulentic

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The writer ahs been on the faculty of the State Normal and Industrial College at Ellendale, North Dakota since 1957. During this time he became concerned about the status of industrial arts in the public schools of North Dakota. Since instruction in industrial arts depends to a large extent on the facilities and equipment available for use by the individual teacher and the nature of the ship program, it would seem desirable for those colleges preparing industrial arts teachers to know the status of this subject area in the public schools of their state. Such information could be used to …

The Effects On The Quality And Rate Of Cursive Writing Of A Seven Months Delay In Its Introduction In The Waterloo Schools, Mary Elizabeth Fredrikson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It has been the policy in the Waterloo school system for the past sixteen years to make the transition from manuscript to cursive handwriting during the last six to eight weeks in second grade. The first part of third grade is spent in a review of the formation of the small and capital cursive letters. Cursive writing is taught throughout the remainder of third grade and used as the primary writing tool throughout the grades. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the quality and rate of cursive writing were affected by delaying the starting of instruction in …
