Profile Characteristics Of Some Forest-Formed Soils Derived From Iowan Till, J. M. Soileau, F. F. Riecken Jan 1959

Profile Characteristics Of Some Forest-Formed Soils Derived From Iowan Till, J. M. Soileau, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three profiles were collected in Bremer and Floyd counties to represent the proposed Coggon series; detailed field and laboratory studies were conducted on these profiles. The Coggon soils have developed under forest vegetation from a "two-story" parent material consisting of a silty mantle-pebble band-glacial till sequence. Being formed from Iowan-age glacial till, the Coggon profiles exhibit an amount of development that is low compared to other Gray-Brown Podzolic soils of Iowa. Coarser parent material might possibly explain why Coggon is less developed than the Weller soils, which are formed from presumably younger, loessial parent material. On the other hand, the …

Some Characteristics Of Bacteria Isolated From Diseased Larvae Of The European Corn Borer, Russell J. Beers, William R. Lockhart, Earle S. Raun Jan 1959

Some Characteristics Of Bacteria Isolated From Diseased Larvae Of The European Corn Borer, Russell J. Beers, William R. Lockhart, Earle S. Raun

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A large proportion of the bacteria isolated from diseased corn borer larvae are pleomorphic, with rods, diplococci, filaments and various transition forms occurring in many cultures. Gram reaction is negative, although the coccoid forms show a tendency to retain gram positivity. In morphology and biochemical characteristics, these isolates resemble certain entomogenous bacteria described by earlier workers, but are similar also to a group of bacteria from human sources which have been designated as members of the tribe Mimeae DeBord. Further studies have been initiated to determine the pathogenicity and the proper taxonomic position of these cultures.

Effects Of Time And Method Of Treatment On Tree Kill And Bluegrass Recovery, J. M. Aikman, E. P. Sylwester Jan 1959

Effects Of Time And Method Of Treatment On Tree Kill And Bluegrass Recovery, J. M. Aikman, E. P. Sylwester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Box elder trees in replicated plots within four seasonal blocks mostly ranged in age from 17 to 24 years, in breast-high diameter from 2 to 8 inches, and in height from 18 to 24 feet. Tree cutting at 3 inches and at 1 foot was done with a chain saw; and a brush killer-fuel oil mixture, at the rate of one quart of concentrate to 5 gallons of fuel oil and one quart to 10 gallons, was applied to the stumps. Resprouting from stumps cut at both heights and in four different seasons was controlled by both concentrations of the …

Yield Components In Oats. Iv. Effect Of Delayed Application Of Nitrogen, Kenneth J. Frey Jan 1959

Yield Components In Oats. Iv. Effect Of Delayed Application Of Nitrogen, Kenneth J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three rates of nitrogen fertilization, 20, 40, and 80 pounds per acre, were applied to oats at seeding time and 2, 4, and 6 weeks later. When compared with the seeding data, delaying the application of 20 and 80 pounds of nitrogen caused a decrease in relative grain yields. At the 40-pound rate, increases in relative yields due to applying the nitrogen 2 and 4 weeks after seeding were observed. The yield response to delayed application of 20 pounds of nitrogen per acre resulted from a reduced relative number of seeds per head, while the 80 pound response was due …

Biosynthesis Of Cholinesterase-Inhibitory Substances From Non-Inhibitory Dialkyl Thiophosphates By Plant Tissues, Wallace H. Orgell, Kunda A. Vaidya, Eugene W. Hamilton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Aqueous solutions of the potassium salts of diethyl thiophosphate and diethyl dithiophosphate were applied to intact leaves of the following 10 plant species: alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis, Duchesne), American elderberry (Sambucus canadensis L.), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber), soybean (Glycine max, Merr.), lima bean (Phaseolus limensis Macf.), catnip (Nepeta cataria L.), and Virginia creeper (Hedera quinquefolia L.). After 24 to 72 hours, aqueous homogenates of all species, excepting carrot, inhibited the action of human plasma cholinesterase in vitro. Neither the plant homogenates nor the thiophosphate salts either separately …

Flowering Dates Of Viola Sororia Willd. And V. Pensylvanica Michx. At Different Latitudes, Theodore A. Mcconnell, Norman H. Russell Jan 1959

Flowering Dates Of Viola Sororia Willd. And V. Pensylvanica Michx. At Different Latitudes, Theodore A. Mcconnell, Norman H. Russell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The response to daylength has been shown to be significant in the initiation of flowering in many species of vascular plants. Herbarium specimens of Viola sororia Willd. and V. pensylvanica Michx. from a wide range of latitudes were examined to ascertain correlation between dates of flowering and length of day. Two observations were made: the higher the latitude, the later flowering occurred in the spring; and the higher the latitude the greater the daylength at the time of open flowering. It is suggested that these north-south clines represent a genetic response arrived at through natural selection. Further studies arc proposed …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Preliminary investigations concerning the treatment of dry carbonate rocks with some derivatives of silane in the vapor state are described. The treated rocks appear similar to affected aggregates observed in some inferior concretes.

Late Pleistocene And Recent Missouri River Terraces In The Big Bend Reservoir, South Dakota, Alan H. Coogan, William N. Irving Jan 1959

Late Pleistocene And Recent Missouri River Terraces In The Big Bend Reservoir, South Dakota, Alan H. Coogan, William N. Irving

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three cut-and-fill terraces of the Missouri River are present in the Big Bend Reservoir. The upper terrace (Mt-2), tentatively correlated with the Cary moraine, consists of outwash sands and gravels. It stands at heights of 80-100 feet above the river. Its surface is capped by a deposit of as much as 30 feet of aeolian sand and silt. The intermediate terrace (Mt-1) consists of gravel, sand, and silt, and stands at heights of 35-45 feet above the river. It, too, is capped with aeolian sand and silt. This terrace is tentatively dated as Mankato, but may be younger. The lower …

The Multiple-Working Hypothesis As Applied To Alaska's Oriented Lakes, Charles E. Carson, Keith M. Huddey Jan 1959

The Multiple-Working Hypothesis As Applied To Alaska's Oriented Lakes, Charles E. Carson, Keith M. Huddey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of the oriented lakes on Alaska's Arctic Coastal Plain provides an excellent opportunity for illustrating the application of the method of multiple-working hypotheses to a geologic problem. Five hypotheses are considered and are deemed to be inconclusive; a composite of these is thought to provide an explanation of the lakes' origin. The hypotheses considered are: (1) that waves, produced by an ancient prevailing wind blowing parallel to the lake elongation, eroded the basins; (2) that the present winds produce wave current systems which preferentially scour the north and south lake shores, thus producing elongation; (3) that the winds …

An Application Of Generalized Means, Sidney D. Nolte Jan 1959

An Application Of Generalized Means, Sidney D. Nolte

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The generalized mean M(x,y) is defined to be Ψ-1 [pΨ (x) + aΨ (y)] where p, a>0, p + a = 1 and Ψ (x) is monotone and continuous.

This mean is applied to the second difference. Δ2(f: x, h) = f(x+h) + (f-h)-2f(x) to form a generalized second difference Δ2Ψ (f: x, h) = MΨ [f(x+h), f(x-h)] - f(x)..

A study is made of functions whose generalized second differences satisfy certain conditions. Maxima of classes of generalized quasi-smooth functions are examined. It is the purpose of this note to apply the generalized mean to …

The second is a set of black flash cards of common constellations, and the third is a rotating disc for practice in estimating standard time by the Big Dipper.

Comparison Of The Performances Of Analyzers And Non-Analyzers During Alternation Practice On A Perceptual-Motor Task, Richard W. Sheldon Jan 1959

Comparison Of The Performances Of Analyzers And Non-Analyzers During Alternation Practice On A Perceptual-Motor Task, Richard W. Sheldon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A total of 15 analyzers and 15 non-analyzers were given an initial five standard trials and then 58 units of alternation practice on the Iowa Pursuitmeter. Each unit of alternation practice consisted of three reversed trials followed by one standard trial. The specific purpose of the study was to determine whether or not individual differences in the amount of interference displayed during alternation practice can be attributed, at least in part, to a tendency to analyze. The results lend some support for the view that the analyzers were less susceptible to interference than the non-analyzers.

Who Are The Fatal Accident Drivers In Iowa?, C. O. Swanson, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of accident drivers in Iowa for five years reveals that fatal-accident drivers are mostly men. The 20-24 year and the 60-64 year groups show an excess of accident drivers. Five per cent of drivers did not carry a license. Out-of-state drivers have twice as many accidents as expected.

Dna, Rna, Lipid Phosphorus, And Acid Soluble Phosphorus In Normal A-Jax Mouse Livers, D. S. Dudley, William H. Coppock, Leland P. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The concentrations of these substances in wet liver tissue from randomly selected, adult mice were determined colorimetrically. DNA exhibits a modal concentration near 320 mg. per 100 gm. of wet tissue. Cytoplasmic constituents do not exhibit modal concentrations. Preliminary measurements performed upon mice fed carbon tetrachloride in olive oil indicate lower concentrations of RNA, acid soluble phosphates, and lipid phosphates in experimental mice.
