Operant Discrimination In The Schooling Fish, Brachydanio Rerio, Bill B. Jackson Jan 1958

Operant Discrimination In The Schooling Fish, Brachydanio Rerio, Bill B. Jackson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although many species of fishes normally congregate in schools, the majority of these fishes will successfully survive in an individual existence. However, the question has been raised as to what extent the operant behavior of schooling fishes remains unchanged when they are isolated from the group. Experiments by Welty (1934) have indicated that goldfish learn mazes more rapidly when grouped than when isolated. Further, he found that motor responses are retained by a group better than by an individual. Breder and Halpern (1946) point out that fishes will sometimes not feed until they see a companion feeding. In order …

The Contribution Of De Bary To Our Knowledge Of Myxomycetes, G. W. Martin Jan 1958

The Contribution Of De Bary To Our Knowledge Of Myxomycetes, G. W. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The slime molds have been known scientifically for over two centuries. Even before Micheli's time, there is record of references to Fuligo, and in 1729 Micheli published recognizable descriptions and illustrations of several genera and species. Other pre-Lipnean botanists studied the group, but it was not until Linnaeus had stimulated interest in things botanical (although, as is well known, he added nothing to our knowledge of the fungi and slime molds) that extensive study was devoted to the group. The work of Batsch, Bulliard, Schrader, Schweinitz and some of their contemporaries gave us a taxonomic basis for the species, while …

Recent Gypsum Exploration In Iowa, Fred H. Dorheim, Russell B. Campbell Jan 1958

Recent Gypsum Exploration In Iowa, Fred H. Dorheim, Russell B. Campbell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Until recently all interest in gypsum in Iowa, with the exception of brief activity at Centerville, was centered around the shallow deposits in the Fort Dodge area. During the past five years, however, interest in deeper gypsum has developed in the southern part of the State and both industry and civic groups have participated in exploratory drilling programs. With the exception of the Centerville area, this interest started with information obtained from the files of the Iowa Geological Survey.

Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stuttering Severity, Dorothy Sherman, Martin Young, Kenneth Gough Jan 1958

Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stuttering Severity, Dorothy Sherman, Martin Young, Kenneth Gough

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various measures of severity of stuttering are available and are used both clinically and experimentally. Information concerning the relationships among these various measures thus should be useful in planning effective therapy or in designing experiments. In a previous study Sherman and Trotter (4) evaluated the relationship between two measures of the severity of stuttering. One measure was the mean scale value of severity of individual moments of stuttering derived from listeners' responses; the other measure was frequency of stuttering. Measures were taken on tape-recorded readings of a 500-word passage. The obtained estimate of the strength of relationship was a Pearson …

The Effects Of Temperature And Ph Upon The Exogenous Development Of Eimeria Tenella Railliet And Lucet, 1891, And Eimeria Acervulina Tyzzer, 1929, Coccidian Parasites Of The Chicken, John N. Farmer, Elery R. Becker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The oocysts of the Coccidia are known to be fairly resistant to chemical disinfectants in general, but relatively susceptible to heat (Chang, 1937). The following investigation was carried out in an attempt to evaluate the combined effects of temperature and pH upon the exogenous development of oocysts of Eimeria tenella and Eimeria acervulina.

Recent Locality Records For Some Iowa Mammals, Emmett Polder Jan 1958

Recent Locality Records For Some Iowa Mammals, Emmett Polder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1953 the writer published a Checklist of Iowa Mammals with notes on new species and changes in distribution since 1937. At that time it was apparent that much information was lacking on distribution of some species. A few forms were small, retiring, and difficult to collect. A large number were conspicuous fur bearers and game species that had moved into new territory or had escaped notice of systematic mammalogists in the past. Some larger mammals for which considerable distribution data were lacking included the otter, grey fox, wildcat, woodchuck, chipmunk, red squirrel, grey squirrel, and white-tailed jack rabbit. Most …

Midwestern Population Studies Of Viola Papilionacea Pursh, Norman H. Russell, Jeanette Graham Jan 1958

Midwestern Population Studies Of Viola Papilionacea Pursh, Norman H. Russell, Jeanette Graham

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since about 1900 nearly every taxonomist concerned with the violets nas referred to Viola papilionacea Pursh as the "common blue violet". Generally speaking, the blue violets of towns and cities especially have been referred to this species. In the major herbaria, the folders containing specimens labeled Viola papilionacea are frequently much larger than those for any other species of the genus. Its habitat has been reported to be "near dwellings", "roadsides", "dooryards", and "common in moist fields". Its range is reported to be "Mass. to Minn., s. to Ga. and Okla.", and it has been reported from other places well …

A Consideration Of The Problem Of Oriented Lakes, G. A. Rosenfeld, K. M. Hussey Jan 1958

A Consideration Of The Problem Of Oriented Lakes, G. A. Rosenfeld, K. M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of oriented lakes has been a subject of controversy in North America as well as other parts of the world. Much has been written on why lakes are oriented, but for the most part no suitable theories have been proposed that satisfactorily explain some of the observed facts associated with orientation. The two most famous examples in North America are the Carolina Bays, located on the Atlantic Coastal plain in the Carolina region, and the Oriented Lakes of Northern Alaska. For both of these areas, several widely differing theories on cause of orientation have been proposed. Some workers …

The Fish Population Of A Southern Iowa Artificial Lake, James Mayhew Jan 1958

The Fish Population Of A Southern Iowa Artificial Lake, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lake Macbride, a 138-acre state-owned artificial lake in Johnson County, was drained in the fall of 1956 to permit reconstruction of the dam. The Coralville Flood-Control Dam on the nearby Iowa River was nearing the final phases of construction, and would ultimately flood the present Lake Macbride with 27 feet of water. Rather than destroy the facilities offered by this established recreational area, the various agencies involved decided to increase the height of the Macbride dam by approximately 29 feet. Surface area of the impounded lake would be expanded to about 940 acres at the new spillway elevation. The Macbride …

Relation Of Grade-Point Averages And Placement Test Scores To Analytic Tendency And To Performance On The Iowa Pursuitmeter, Guy H. Miles, Don Lewis Jan 1958

Relation Of Grade-Point Averages And Placement Test Scores To Analytic Tendency And To Performance On The Iowa Pursuitmeter, Guy H. Miles, Don Lewis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Miles, in two closely related investigations (5, 6), dichotomized male subjects on the basis of their statements as to how they had gone about solving several block design problems of the Kohs type. The two categories were analyzers and non-analyzers. Subjects were classified as analyzers if their a posteriori verbalizations indicated a tendency, at the conceptual level, to break each design down into parts before any blocks were actually moved. They were classified as non-analyzers if their statements failed to suggest that a breaking-into-parts approach had been employed. In the common run of male undergraduate students at the State University, …

A Procedure For Determining The Relative Volume Of Mitochondria In Hepatic Cells, Paul A. Meglitsch, Leland P. Johnson, Rodney A. Rogers, Frances R. Rogers, Alison M. Meglitsch Jan 1958

A Procedure For Determining The Relative Volume Of Mitochondria In Hepatic Cells, Paul A. Meglitsch, Leland P. Johnson, Rodney A. Rogers, Frances R. Rogers, Alison M. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

About forty years ago Cowdry's monograph on mitochondria appeared evaluating the work of previous investigators, indicating synonymy and, in a sense, bringing the first exploratory phase of the study of these cellular constituents to a close (1). Reasonably specific methods for their demonstration had been devised, and it was possible to have some confidence in the conclusions that the so-called mitochondria of different kinds of cells, despite dissimilarities in size or shape, were comparable cellular parts.
