Epizootiology Of Trichiniasis In Wildlife From A Southcentral Iowa Area, W. J. Zimmermann, E. D. Hunnard, L. H. Schwarte, H. E. Biester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sixteen species of wildlife, comprising 1,925 specimens, were examined for Trichinella spiralis during the 1953-1960 period. Species found to be infected with parasites were rat, fox, mink, raccoon, and badger. Initially a high incidence of trichinae was found in the rat, fox, and mink, followed by a marked decline. There is some evidence of a cyclic occurrence in mink. The possible significance of wildlife reservoirs as vectors of trichiniaisis to grain-fed swine is discussed.

Some Mammal Remains From A Jackson County Cave, James M. Trosky, Emmett Polder Jan 1960

Some Mammal Remains From A Jackson County Cave, James M. Trosky, Emmett Polder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Excavation of a trench in the floor of a cave at Springbrook, Jackson County, Iowa, yielded bones of nine species of mammals. At a depth of 19 to 24 inches the jawbone of a porcupine and the upper right canine tooth of a black bear were found. There are no museum records of either species in Iowa. Intermingled with these remains were clam shells and ashes probably left by cave dwelling Indians. Historical literature indicates that the bear probably was extinct in Iowa before the Civil War and the porcupine before the advent of white settlers.

Cottontails With "Horns", Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1960

Cottontails With "Horns", Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Published information on papillomas, commonly called horns, on cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) in Iowa dates back to 1907. Specimens of horned rabbits are on record from Woodbury, Pottawattamie, Cherokee, Franklin, and Boone counties. Those from the last two counties were necropsied at Iowa State University in 1958 and 1959-60, respectively. Information from conservation officers and biologists shows sight records for a number of years past for at least 16 additional counties. The malady seems to be limited almost entirely to the western half of the state.

An Electrophoretic Analysis Of Normal And Pathological Sera, Joan Lee Socknat

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The technique of closed-strip filter paper electrophoresis was used to analyze and compare normal and pathological human sera, and to study the effects of age, species, and stress on animal sera. Problems encountered were overcome by varying pressure, buffer, dye, electrodes, sources of voltage of electric current, and the denaturing and dyeing process.

High School Science Achievement As Related To Interest And I.Q. Among Graduates Of Thibodaux High School, Thibodaux, Louisiana, And Malcolm Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Louis E. Barrilleaux

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Numerous articles on the possible causes of an increasing shortage of scientific manpower have been published. Many of these articles have stressed the lack of sufficient guidance in directing capable students in high school toward an emphasis in science. It is pointed out that insufficient guidance alone, among high school students, is a major factor in the increasing shortage of scientific personnel. As a result, the schools have been under criticism.

A Program Of Curriculum Development For The Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Chuang Bejrananda

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior to about 1870, Thailand had no formal school system. Education in general was undertaken as a family task. However, as society became more complex, special institutions were developed to promote desired educational activities. Such developments have been gradual, and in large measure in reference to national interests.

Relationships Between Iowa High School Physical Science Programs And Placement Test Scores Of Iowa State Teachers College Students, Pauline Georgia Berg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A physical science test has been administered to each member of the freshman class upon entrance to Iowa State Teachers College since the fall of 1952. The individual score on this placement test determines whether that student will enroll in 82:20 The Physical Sciences, whether he will enroll in a science course chosen by the student, or whether he may be excused from all required physical science courses in the general education program.

A Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Using A Time-Penalty Scoring Procedure For Shorthand Dictation And Transcription Tests, M. Elaine Blumhagen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The ultimate goal of any shorthand course is to have the students produce mailable copy from their shorthand notes at reasonable rates of speed. This fact has been recognized by leading authorities in the field of-shorthand and transcription. With acceptance of this goal as the objective of shorthand and transcription teaching, some valid means of measuring student progress toward that goal is essential.

This study attempted to investigate guidance programs as they existed during the 1959-60 school year in Iowa high schools as …

The Impact Of Usage Studies Upon Recent Grammar Texts, Donald Keith Chiquet Jan 1960

The Impact Of Usage Studies Upon Recent Grammar Texts, Donald Keith Chiquet

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to show to what degree writers of grammar texts have been influenced by the controversy over usage as a criterion of grammatical acceptability. More specifically, the problem is to show the degree of agreement between textbook writers and liberal grammarians. This information will be used to determine the degree to which textbooks are liberal or traditional. If the texts are liberal, it may be considered that the impact of liberal grammarians upon textbook writers has been great. If these grammar texts are not liberal, or if they are no more liberal than they were …

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal Jan 1960

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The people of India had long been dissatisfied with the educational program which existed prior to the Basic system of education. The traditional system which preceded Basic education originated with the Charter Act of 1813 of the East India Company of Britain. Only a relatively few persons benefited directly from this system; it never reached the masses. This policy of "downward infiltration" created some complex and unfavorable results. It is important to note in this connection a statement from the 1958 UNESCO world Survey of Education that "owing to defects in the official policies, the position of mass education in …

A Study Of The Influence Of The Wettin Family On European Diplomacy From 1878 To 1914, Loren Nelson Horton Jan 1960

A Study Of The Influence Of The Wettin Family On European Diplomacy From 1878 To 1914, Loren Nelson Horton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The causes of World War I have been written about so repeatedly that there would seem to be no facet left unexplored. A closer examination of this period of history will reveal that most of the writing is the product of nationalistic writers seeking to lay the war guilt at the door of their neighbor, or seeking to prove the innocenc of their own governments and countries. Leaders of the period have written voluminous memoirs carefully explaining their own purity of motive and action, and at the same time exposing their rivals as warmongers and deliberate war-makers., despite valiant efforts …
