Certain Mitotic Effects Of Kinetin, Gibberellic Acid, Maleic Hydrazide, And Indoleacetic Acid In Onion Roots, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus Jan 1959

Certain Mitotic Effects Of Kinetin, Gibberellic Acid, Maleic Hydrazide, And Indoleacetic Acid In Onion Roots, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Growing, intact, adventitious roots from the bulbs of Allium cepa were treated with 1 ppm and 10 ppm solutions of kinetin, gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide, and indoleacetic acid, and with paired combinations of these. The effect on the rate of mitosis was studied by counting the mitotic figures present in the distal 5 mm. of the root tip in serial longitudinal sections. Roots treated with kinetin alone or in any combination showed marked inhibition of mitosis. There was initial inhibition followed by an after-effect of stimulation of mitosis in roots treated with gibberellic acid, with indoleacetic acid, or with a …

Flower Development And Gametogenesis In Oenothera Laciniata Hill, R. L. Hulbary, A. Nagaraja Rao Jan 1959

Flower Development And Gametogenesis In Oenothera Laciniata Hill, R. L. Hulbary, A. Nagaraja Rao

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Calyx, carpels, stamens, and corolla arise in acropetal succession. The wall of the anther has four layers of cells. The tapetum is binucleate and is of glandular type. Tricolpate pollen grains are triangular in outline and are binucleate at the time of shedding. The cells of the endothecium have spiral thickenings. Development of the ovule is described. The synergids have filiform apparatus with prominent hooks. Pollen tube enters porogamously and destroys one of the synergids during its entry. A hypostase is organized at the chalazal end of the ovule. The present observations are discussed in relation to the previous literature.

Notes On Determination Of Carbonates In Soils By Chemical Means, D.T. A., And X-Ray, R. L. Handy, Turgut Demirel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various methods for measurement of carbonates in soils were tried and studied. Gas evolution methods are accurate but slow and susceptible to experimental error. Acid neutralization is rapid and offers a fair approximation, but it is affected by many non-carbonate minerals. Versenate methods are rapid and accurate, but are affected by exchangeable calcium on the clay. None of these methods is ordinarily specific for calcite or dolomite. Differential thermal analysis is accurate and specific for calcite or dolomite. Best results were obtained by measuring peak height after runs in an air atmosphere. However, analyses are slow and are influenced by …

X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis Of Total Iron And Manganese In Soils, R. L. Handy, E.A. Rosauer Jan 1959

X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis Of Total Iron And Manganese In Soils, R. L. Handy, E.A. Rosauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two methods are presented for the quantitative determination of total iron and manganese in soils. The first necessitates the preparation of a calibration curve and is applicable only to soils having similar properties. In this method known increments of Fe2O3 and/or MnO2 are added to the original soil, and X-ray fluorescence intensities are obtained. Analysis of an unknown then utilizes the resulting equation which expresses the relation between intensity and concentration. A second method, here called the two-point method, does not require a calibration curve and is valid for a wider range of samples. A sample …

Variations In Mankato Glacial Till And Related Soil Types In Hamilton County, Iowa, Allen R. Hidlebaugh Jan 1959

Variations In Mankato Glacial Till And Related Soil Types In Hamilton County, Iowa, Allen R. Hidlebaugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Soil surveys in Hamilton County, Iowa, have shown a need for the revision of the Clarion and Nicollet soil series to include the fine textured variant soils found there or for the establishment of new series. The results of this study show that sufficient differences exist to warrant the establishment of new series for the fine textured variants of Clarion and Nicollet. They are higher in clay content, have lower chroma in the A horizon, have higher gravel content, have higher bulk density, are firmer in consistence, have finer and better developed structure, and mottling occurs at shallower depths, than …

The Related Faults Of The East Side Of The Cañon City Embayment, Colorado, George L. Marshall Jan 1959

The Related Faults Of The East Side Of The Cañon City Embayment, Colorado, George L. Marshall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is highly probable that in the synclinal formation of the Cañon City Embayment, the east side, at least, developed as a monocline. Its west limb was down-warped to form half of the syncline, and its east limb was up-warped as Cooper Mountain was elevated. The developing monocline was steep with high westward dips. Tensional forces must have developed in the upper bend and westward compressional forces in the lower bend. In some portions of the monocline the compression exceeded the tensile strength of the rocks; thus the Fourmile Creek Thrust Fault and associated tear faults were formed as the …

Phacidiales Of Iowa, Marion D. Ervin Jan 1959

Phacidiales Of Iowa, Marion D. Ervin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Phacidiales is a small group of inoperculate discomycetes regarded as being intermediate between the Pyrenomycetes and the Pezizales. The species are mostly parasitic on twigs and leaves of vascular plants, the ascus stages usually appearing only on old wood after it is dead, or on leaves after they have fallen. The apothecia arise in stromata which may be buried in the tissues of the host plant, or superficial. The ascocarps are waxy, leathery, or carbonaceous, round to elongate and covered with an epithecium which opens by means of stellate, longitudinal or irregular fissures when the ascospores are mature.

Birth Weight Relations In Human Multipara, E. V. Enzmann, S. D. Miroyiannis Jan 1959

Birth Weight Relations In Human Multipara, E. V. Enzmann, S. D. Miroyiannis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been shown previously that the weight (W) of an entire litter of newborn young of multiparous mammals is proportional to the number (N) in the litter. This proportionality may be expressed by the empirical equation

K

W=N+C

where K is assumed to have the properties of a partition coefficient and expresses the manner in which a limited nutritional supply is shared by the members oi the litter. This relationship also holds for human multipara, though it is modified by the inability of the human mother to increase the nutritional level to the same extent as other species we …

Naturally Occurring Radioelements In The Ground Waters Of Iowa, Charles N. Brown, R.L. Morris Jan 1959

Naturally Occurring Radioelements In The Ground Waters Of Iowa, Charles N. Brown, R.L. Morris

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reconnaissance studies of radioelements in the ground waters of Iowa indicate that, where radium is present, it is Ra226, the biologically significant isotope. Its distribution varies, but it appears that (1) waters from consolidated sandstones in areas distant from recharge points may contain up to 8 μ,μc/L Ra226; (2) waters from limestone aquifers vary but, in general, are likely to contain appreciable amounts, up to 3 μμc/L Ra226; and (3) waters from glacial aquifers contain little, if any, Ra226.

Characteristics And Distribution Of Some Missouri River Deposits, J. L. Glenn, A. R. Dahl Jan 1959

Characteristics And Distribution Of Some Missouri River Deposits, J. L. Glenn, A. R. Dahl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The alluvial valley of the Missouri River adjacent to Iowa is being investigated to determine the geologic and engineering properties of alluvial deposits. The environment in which the alluvium accumulates is believed to control the nature and distribution of the deposits. The fundamental methods and tools of geomorphology are being used to delineate alluvial environments. Data are presented on the range of particle size and frequency of textural distribution for several deposits mapped as occurring in similar environments.

Yield Losses From Atypical Oat Blast In Central Iowa In 1957, K. J. Frey, J. A. Browning Jan 1959

Yield Losses From Atypical Oat Blast In Central Iowa In 1957, K. J. Frey, J. A. Browning

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An epiphytotic of blast occurred in the Iowa oat crop in 1957. The blasting was atypical in that the panicles were stratified with all of the spikelets in a section being blasted. Normally blasting occurs in the spikelets near the base of the panicle and the central axis. The environmental condition which appeared to be the most likely cause of the blasting was a cold, cloudy period between May 10 and 27. This was during early spikelet development and panicle elongation. Severity of atypical blasting was associated with earliness and lateness in the oat varieties. The highest percentage of panicles …
