Some Observations On The Plasmodia Of Myxomycetes, Mary Annuciata Mcmanus, Mary Kathryn Taylor
Some Observations On The Plasmodia Of Myxomycetes, Mary Annuciata Mcmanus, Mary Kathryn Taylor
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Three distinct types of plasmodia are illustrated and compared. The physaraceous type is easily visible when mature, and forms a fleshy fan in the advancing portion. The stemonitoid type is delicate and transparent, macroscopically invisible up to the time of fruiting. The third type always remains microscopic, and never forms a reticulum of veins.
The Isolation Of Fusarium Moniliforme Sheld. From Corn Kernels, Richard W. Ikenberry
The Isolation Of Fusarium Moniliforme Sheld. From Corn Kernels, Richard W. Ikenberry
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Kernels representing six inbred corn lines were soaked in sterile distilled water for 24 and 48 hours, with and without aeration during soaking. When the kernels were plated on a nutritive medium following such treatments, frequency of appearance of Fusarium moniliforme on kernels was directly associated with longer periods of soaking, and with continuous aeration provided during soaking. Such variations in recovery of the organisms from the kernel, depending on isolation procedure used, strongly emphasize the fact that failure to isolate a fungus from host tissue does not necessarily mean the fungus is absent.
Isolation Of Pyrenochaeta Terrestris From Onion Roots, Robert P. Borgman, J. C. Horton
Isolation Of Pyrenochaeta Terrestris From Onion Roots, Robert P. Borgman, J. C. Horton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A comparison was made of various techniques for isolating Pyrenochaeta terrestris (Hansen) Gorenz et al. from growing onion roots. Water agar was as suitable as potato dextrose agar (0.5% dextrose) and is recommended to avoid contamination. Texas L 303, Iowa Yellow Globe 51, and Trapp's Downing Yellow Globe used as trap crops were equally efficient. Maximum infection of the early planting occurred earlier than a later planting.
A Preliminary Report On The Vascular Flora Of Northwestern Iowa, Jack L. Carter
A Preliminary Report On The Vascular Flora Of Northwestern Iowa, Jack L. Carter
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This survey brings together the available information on the flora of ten northwestern Iowa counties-the species of vascular plants occurring in the area, their relative frequencies, and the habitats in which they exist. The major collecting was done throughout the growing seasons of 1956 and 1957. Over 4,000 collections were made, and the probable number of specimens is over 9,000. The author examined and annotated over 1,100 specimens which had been previously collected and deposited in the major herbaria of the state. Plants characteristic of several of the typical plant communities are listed.
Extent And Distribution Of Soils In Depressional Areas In The Clarion-Nicollet-Webster Soil Association In Lowa, D. F. Slusher, R. W. Arnold, R. Protz
Extent And Distribution Of Soils In Depressional Areas In The Clarion-Nicollet-Webster Soil Association In Lowa, D. F. Slusher, R. W. Arnold, R. Protz
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The extent and distribution of soils that occur in depressional areas in the Clarion-Nicollet-Webster soil association have been estimated for Iowa counties from a randomly selected sample. The sample consisted of detailed soil maps of approximately 1000 quarter-section (each about 160 acres), or about 2 percent of the total land area. The data from the soil maps of the samples were projected to give estimates of soil conditions by counties and for the area as a whole. The acreage of depressional soils is estimated to be 4.8 percent of the total soil association area with significant variation between counties. The …
Geomorphology And Quaternary History Of Shell Valley, Bighorn County, Wyoming, Gary Hauser, Frank Reckendorf, Dale Smith
Geomorphology And Quaternary History Of Shell Valley, Bighorn County, Wyoming, Gary Hauser, Frank Reckendorf, Dale Smith
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Shell Valley, from the mouth of Shell Canyon, to its junction with the Bighorn Hiver in east-central Bighorn County, Wyoming, was mapped and the fluvial landforms were described in detail. The morphologic features of this valley and its major tributaries are largely the product of structurally-controlled stream erosion and alluviation. Their disposition indicates that they have been produced by lateral planation, slope retreat, simple downcutting, and downcutting accompanied by lateral migration of the stream, all of which are still active. Correlation of the local features with some more regional features, which have been dated, indicates that much of the Erosional …

An Analysis Of The Content Of Perceptual Responses To Randomly Derived Stimuli, George G. Karas, Sheldon K. Edelman, Steve Zyzanski, Don Goodrich
An Analysis Of The Content Of Perceptual Responses To Randomly Derived Stimuli, George G. Karas, Sheldon K. Edelman, Steve Zyzanski, Don Goodrich
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In order to understand the role of the stimulus in form perception, an analysis of perceptual responses and stimulus characteristics must be undertaken. Previous research was focused upon the characteristics of the stimulus. This study presents a first approach to categorization of response.
Objective, randomly-derived stimuli were presented tachistoscopically to Ss, who responded with their associations to the stimuli. The data suggest that the categories are meaningful ways of construing these responses. Some categories seem to be basic, while others require further differentiation. Hypotheses for future research have been obtained from these data.

An Analysis Of An Alternate-Year Walleye Fry Stocking Program In The Cedar River In Iowa, R. E. Clearly, J. K. Mayhew
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Year-class analysis of walleye, Stizostedion v. vitreum (Mitchill), taken by anglers in a portion of the Cedar River in Iowa indicated that alternate-year stocking of 3,500 fry per mile of river did not influence year-class abundance. Despite the short duration of the project, 1951-1958, a reasonably direct relationship between spring floods and spring air temperatures and year-class abundance was evident. Disparity in year-class abundance between samples taken 5 miles apart and within 3 months of each other, but by different methods (angling and chemical kill), indicates either a sampling selectivity or a relative discreteness or stability of portions of an …

Crystallite-Size Determination Of Mgo By X-Ray Diffraction Line Broadening, E. A. Rosauer, R. L. Handy
Crystallite-Size Determination Of Mgo By X-Ray Diffraction Line Broadening, E. A. Rosauer, R. L. Handy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Scherrer equation which relates the pure diffraction breadth to crystallite size of the diffracting substance is applied to a study of various heat-treated MgO powders. A statistical treatment is used to examine effects of sample preparation and the diffraction system and to determine the degree of accuracy of the method. The procedure as described should give a relative accuracy in the 10,000 A range of ± 10 percent, and measurements may be made to 100,000 A. Comparison of the X-ray data with electron micrographs indicated that the latter gave information with regard to aggregate, not crystallite size. Aggregates grow …

Reliability Of The Taylor Lie Scale, Daniel J. Kortenkamp
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A test-retest study of reliability was made for the 15-item Lie Scale found in the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMAS). The subjects for this study were the students of a Midwestern college for men. The TMAS was administered and, within a week, the Manifest Hostility Scale in which the Taylor Lie Scale had been placed. A correlation coefficient of +.70 was obtained. This was found to be very near average when compared to the reliability of other self-inventories.
Ultrasonic Standing Wave Investigations, William R. Brooks
Ultrasonic Standing Wave Investigations, William R. Brooks
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Cavitation activity as produced by sound waves in a liquid is a useful phenomenon. It has been successfully applied as a cleaning process. To increase equipment efficiency in this operation, tests were made to determine if standing wave formation affected the intensity of cavitation. This was accomplished by varying the liquid depth in multiples of the sound wave length. The results indicate that standing wave formation has a positive effect but only to a very small degree.

The Preparation Of Tantalum Metal By The Carbon Reduction Of Tantalum Pentoxide, C. B. Hamilton, H. A. Wilhelm
The Preparation Of Tantalum Metal By The Carbon Reduction Of Tantalum Pentoxide, C. B. Hamilton, H. A. Wilhelm
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A mixture of tantalum pentoxide and carbon when heated under vacuum conditions reacts to give carbon monoxide as essentially the only gaseous product. A temperature of about 1200° C is required to give measurable gas evolution. The degree of completion of the reaction for a certain charge and for a certain finishing pressure depends upon the temperature. In a uniform stoichiometric mixture of fine powders, the reaction goes to near completion at a temperature of about 2100° C with a finishing pressure of less than one micron. The carbon in the charge appears to be in the form of carbides …
Studies Of Complexes Of The Transition Metals. V. Copper Complex With Dithiolmalonate, William A. Deskin, Perry L. Weigel
Studies Of Complexes Of The Transition Metals. V. Copper Complex With Dithiolmalonate, William A. Deskin, Perry L. Weigel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The copper (II) ion and the dithiolmalonate ion form a complex with an absorption maximum in the ultraviolet region (275 mμ) of the spectrum. The formula of the complex was determined by the methods of varying mole ratio and continuous variation and was found to be Cu(DTM)2-2. The formation constant of the complex was determined by the method of continuous variation and successive dilutions of the stoichiometric proportions of Cu+2 and DTM-2. All measurements were made at room temperature with the pH of solutions adjusted at 5.0 ± 0.2. The ionic strength was controlled …

Results Of Semi-Controlled Hunting Upon The Harvest Of Waterfowl At Lake Odessa, Iowa, 1960, James G. Sieh, William Aspelmeier
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Hunter questionnaire surveys were conducted in 1958 and 1959 to determine the number of pheasant hunters, the total number of birds killed, and the distribution of hunt-pressure in Iowa. A one percent random sample was selected from the current license files. Results indicated that 75.2 percent of the licensees hunted pheasants in 1958 compared to 74.6 percent in 1959. A total of 267,455 hunters bagged 1,548,564 ringnecks in 1958 and 238,903 hunters killed 1,070,285 birds in 1959. Forty to 44 percent of the total season kill occurred during the first two days of the season. Hunter success figures and post-season …

A Cytoplasmically Inherited Abnormality In Maize, William L. Brown
A Cytoplasmically Inherited Abnormality In Maize, William L. Brown
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Defective plants, ranging in degree from lethal to chlorophyll streaking of the leaves, are shown to be due to a factor or factors in the cytoplasm of the popcorn inbred P2. Five distinct genomes were found to be "incompatible" in P2 cytoplasm although the degree of abnormality varies between genomes, indicating a nuclear-cytoplasmic interaction in this material. One of the most distinctive characteristics of the defective P2 cytoplasm is the extreme phenotypic variability found in F1 hybrids involving P2 females. The substitution of WF9 for P2 chromosomes in P2 cytoplasm is equally as abnormal as the original F1 …

Background Radioactivity In The Decorah Fault Region, Philip J. Lorenz, Orville C. Rodenberg, Larry G. Shadle, Alan C. Antes, William D. Hess
Background Radioactivity In The Decorah Fault Region, Philip J. Lorenz, Orville C. Rodenberg, Larry G. Shadle, Alan C. Antes, William D. Hess
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A known fault site at Decorah, Iowa, was surveyed for indicative variations in surface radioactivity. A portable ionization chamber revealed significant increases in gamma ray intensity at several locations. At one point the radiation level was 70% greater than the background intensity. Measurements repeated one year later verified this pattern. Radiation contours were plotted over an extensive area in the city of Decorah. This map, with other items of supporting evidence, indicated a possible fault strike of approximately N 55° W.
