On The Construction Of The Measurable Sets, Donovan F. Sanderson Jan 1962

On The Construction Of The Measurable Sets, Donovan F. Sanderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Whenever we have a measure function α defined on some set M of subsets of a set T, we may determine a binary relation Q between the elements of M by defining, for all members A and B of M, AQB if and only if α(A) ≤ α(B). Using such a binary relation, we may derive certain measure theoretic properties independently of the real number system. In particular, if we use what might be termed a process of completion, we may construct, from a system of Borel sets, not only a system of Lebesgue measurable sets, but, in general, …

Dial Legibility As A Function Of Scale Graduation And Dial Shape, Bruce B. Black, Dorothy Fluger, George G. Karas Jan 1962

Dial Legibility As A Function Of Scale Graduation And Dial Shape, Bruce B. Black, Dorothy Fluger, George G. Karas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of dial legibility in terms of accuracy of reading has been carried on from two approaches. In one of these the dial shape is varied, while the graduations are held constant. The other approach is to hold shape constant and to vary the number of graduations. The present study presents a combination of the two earlier approaches, with shapes and graduations both being varied. Sixty dials were presented in booklets to forty Ss, who read them to the nearest 0.1 cm. while being timed. The results indicate that in dial reading situations where exposure time is not limited …

Development And Comparative Morphology Of The Gonopodium Of Goodeid Fishes, Clarence L. Turner, Gullermo Mendoza, Rebecca Reiter Jan 1962

Development And Comparative Morphology Of The Gonopodium Of Goodeid Fishes, Clarence L. Turner, Gullermo Mendoza, Rebecca Reiter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Goodeidae, one of four families of the cyprinodont fishes and all of whose species are viviparous have a modified anal fin in males for intromission of sperm. This gonopodium, with structures specific for each species, develop under the dual controls of genetically determined patterns and endogenous androgenic hormones. In males of all species of the family, rays 2 to 7 of the anal fin are shorter than the other rays and in some species they are single instead of bifurcated. The rays of this complex are strongly recurved and slender in some species. A comparative study of rays 2 …

Inheritance Of Seed Weight And Its Relation To Grain Yield Of Oats, K. J. Frey Jan 1962

Inheritance Of Seed Weight And Its Relation To Grain Yield Of Oats, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 3 oat crosses seed weight appeared to be inherited as a quantitative character. Each of the crosses showed transgressive segregation. In 6 crosses, the correlations between yield and seed weight were all positive, but only 4 were significant. In simulated selection experiments, the efficiency of selection for yield was compared when only yield or when yield plus seed weight were used as the selection criterion. In general, the addition of seed weight as a selection criterion decreased the gain in yield.

An Unusual Case Of Stream Piracy, Frank Reckendorf, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1962

An Unusual Case Of Stream Piracy, Frank Reckendorf, Keith M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An unusual case of stream piracy took place in the recent past through the Franklin Bluffs on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska. The Sagavanirktok River and Hawk Creek occupied opposite positions on the sides of a ridge, with the result of a rapid lowering of the divide between them. Loss of cementation (by thaw) of the gravels in the formation separating them continued until the higher flowing Hawk Creek burst through the ice-free gravels of the ridge to join the Sagavanirktok River about one-half mile upstream from its former junction.

Thrombocytes were not measured or counted. Data on cell sizes are given for P. elegans.

The Effect Of Kinetin On The Multiplication Rate Of Blepharisma Undulans, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Mary Sharon Geraghty Jan 1962

The Effect Of Kinetin On The Multiplication Rate Of Blepharisma Undulans, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Mary Sharon Geraghty

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Kinetin, 6-furfurylaminopuime, has been found to promote cell division in plants, and has also been reported to increase the rate of division of animal cells. In previous studies of its effect on the rate of division of Paramecium caudatum, some workers have found a stimulatory effect, whereas others have found inhibition. The effect of low concentrations of kinetin (K) on the rate of division was tested for another ciliate, Blepharisma undulans. No significant stimulation of division was found. A significant inhibition of division was found after treatment with 0.5 ppm K and with 1.5 ppm K.

Bobwhite Quail, Winter Weather And Agriculture, M. E. Stempel Jan 1962

Bobwhite Quail, Winter Weather And Agriculture, M. E. Stempel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bobwhite quail are still found in most of their historic range which extends north into Minnesota. The best Iowa populations are in the three southern tiers of Iowa counties. Their peak abundance occurred before 1900. Long cold winters and deep snows usually decrease quail numbers. However, in the best brushy cover near grain fields, they have persisted in good numbers even though the bitter cold winters of 1912, 1936 and 1960. The 1960 winter losses were estimated at about 70 per cent in scanty cover, but as low as 10 percent in high quality cover.

Detection And Measurement Of Air-Borne Radiation At Grinnell, Iowa, Michael P. Schulhof, James Wolfson Jan 1962

Detection And Measurement Of Air-Borne Radiation At Grinnell, Iowa, Michael P. Schulhof, James Wolfson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A relatively simple method is presented for the detection and measurement of total air-borne radiation. It employs only a scintillation counter, and ordinary laboratory materials. Using this method, a monitoring station was established for the period from the Fall of 1961 through the Spring of 1962. The results from this study, when compared with the results published by the United States Public Health Service, indicate a high degree of reliability in the method used.

Equal Rest-Work Ratios Under Massed And Distributed Conditions Of Practice, B. L. Kintz Jan 1962

Equal Rest-Work Ratios Under Massed And Distributed Conditions Of Practice, B. L. Kintz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Groups of subjects practiced operating the Multipoint Two-Hand Coordinator under various rest-work ratios. It was found that the groups which had equal ratios of rest-work, regardless of the absolute amount of time spent on either, performed at equal levels. Since many studies in the literature report different intervals of rest and work, making numerical comparisons between studies difficult, it is suggested on the basis of these results that equal rest-work ratios might be a useful comparison variable. Evidence was presented to support a hypothesis that groups practicing under massed conditions develop SIR (permanent work decrement), but distributed practice groups do …

Antibiotics Stimulating Or Inhibiting Germination And Growth Of Rice, Robert C. Goss Jan 1962

Antibiotics Stimulating Or Inhibiting Germination And Growth Of Rice, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report is concerned with the effect of antibiotics on germination and translocation of native chemicals in the laboratory and on the plant's reaction to certain antibiotics used as soil drenches under greenhouse conditions. The seeds treated with antibiotics active against Gram positive organisms were deficient in both carbohydrates and proteins. The seeds treated with antibiotics active against Cram negative organisms had a delayed germination but a normal physiological development. Streptomycin had the most adverse effect on translocation but stimulated germination. Analysis of variance of germination indicated that seed germination was dependent upon the antibiotic used. The analysis for the …

Distribution Of The Blacknose Shiner, Notropis Heterolepis Eigenmann And Eigenmann, In Clay, Dickinson And Osceola Counties, Iowa, Virgil E. Dowell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four collections of the blacknose shiner, Notropis heterolepis Eigenmann and Eigenmann, were made from three different streams in Clay, Dickinson and Osceola Counties, Iowa. Twenty-six specimens were collected. These are the only known specimens of this species collected from a stream environment in Iowa in the last twenty years. Thus, it was demonstrated that the species is not yet extinct in Iowa streams.

Explorations In The Measurement Of Empathy As Analytical Predictive Ability, Calvin J. Daane, Gordon J. Rhum Jan 1962

Explorations In The Measurement Of Empathy As Analytical Predictive Ability, Calvin J. Daane, Gordon J. Rhum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This was a preliminary effort to develop a scale for the measurement of empathy as analytical predictive ability. The approach embodied the use of 20 words in three contexts; the 60 rating elements comprised the scale. Extent of agreement between self ratings of a person to be judged (reader) and the estimates of those ratings by a group of persons (judges) was used as a measure of empathic ability. An attempt to take into account possible spurious influences on the empathy scores was not fruitful. The standard materials, including a filmed version of the reader's behavior, were used with several …

Preliminary Aspects Of An Ecological Investigation Of Lake East Okoboji, Iowa, Roger Volker Jan 1962

Preliminary Aspects Of An Ecological Investigation Of Lake East Okoboji, Iowa, Roger Volker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A preliminary study of some ecological factors of Lake East Okoboji was made in the period June 1960- June 1961. Chemical analyses were conducted to determine phenolphthalein alkalinity, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, total hardness, chloride, sulfate, pH, dissolved oxygen, iron, phosphate, nitrate, and silica. Collections of diatoms were made concurrently with the chemical analyses. Lake East Okoboji was found to be an alkaline, shallow, non-stratified, moderately hard water lake. A large spring and fall bloom of diatoms occurred, with a dense blue-green algal bloom in mid-summer.

Inhibition Of Germination Of Oospores Of Peronospora Manshurica, John Dunleavy, Glenn Snyder Jan 1962

Inhibition Of Germination Of Oospores Of Peronospora Manshurica, John Dunleavy, Glenn Snyder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oospores of Peronospora manshurica have not previously been observed to germinate. In the present tests, however, oospores on seed coats of soybeans washed in running tap water for 1 week germinated. Each germinating oospore produced a germ tube, which developed into typical branched mycelium. Oospores were placed in the center of water-agar plates, some of which were immediately sprayed with a dilute suspension of conidia of P. manshurica. Other plates were sprayed later. Germination of conidia was inhibited in an area around the oospores. The size of the area of inhibition was proportional to the elapsed time between placing oospores …

Retention Of Chlorophyll In Lesions Produced By Tobacco Ringspot Virus, John Dunleavy Jan 1962

Retention Of Chlorophyll In Lesions Produced By Tobacco Ringspot Virus, John Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

On intact and detached cotyledons of Caserta squash development of lesions produced by the tobacco ringspot virus was observed macroscopically and microscopically. Chlorophyll was destroyed in all portions of infected cotyledons except at the periphery of lesions and at the basal cells of trichomes in the center of lesions. Lesions were smaller on detached, infected cotyledons. Chlorophyll was retained in intact plastids clumped in a reticulate pattern throughout lesions on detached leaves. Chloroplasts in lesions were still deeply pigmented 40 days after cotyledons had been detached, whereas all other areas of the cotyledons were devoid of chlorophyll 1 week after …
