Notes On Iowa Diatoms Iii. Occurrence Of The Genus Pleurosigma In The Des Moines River, Ryan W. Drum
Notes On Iowa Diatoms Iii. Occurrence Of The Genus Pleurosigma In The Des Moines River, Ryan W. Drum
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A member of the diatom genus Pleurosigma was collected from the Des Moines River from 12 stations. Earlier investigators did not report it. This organism may be suitable as an ecological indicator, since most members of the genus occur in salt or brackish water. Positive identification was not made, the organism is probably a variety of P. delicatulum Wm. Smith.
Measurement Of Xylary Fluid Movement In Elm By The Thermoelectric Method, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr., John H. Hart
Measurement Of Xylary Fluid Movement In Elm By The Thermoelectric Method, Harold S. Mcnabb Jr., John H. Hart
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The thermoelectric method was used to determine the effect of external conditions and diurnal variation on the direction of xylary fluid movement in elm branches. Upward movement was detected under conditions favoring normal transpirational rates. No movement was detected during darkness or rainy conditions. Possible downward movement of branch fluid was indicated during late afternoon. Further refinement of the technique is needed for clarifying the latter observation.
The Latex System Of Some Native Spurges, Robert C. Lommasson
The Latex System Of Some Native Spurges, Robert C. Lommasson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Eight species of Euphorbia in the subgenus Chamaesyce were investigated anatomically from collections made in Kansas. The latex system is composed of branched nonarticulated laticiferous cells. These laticifers are distributed regularly or apparently at random through the cortex of root and stem depending upon the species. When the outer cortex is destroyed by periderm as in the root or the inner cortex by crushing as in the stem, there are still laticiferous cells apparent in these two organs. The most extensive branching network of laticifers is developed in the leaf. No anastomoses were found. The commonest latex system in the …
A Useful Planting-Jig And Plot Design For Experimental Plantings, Ben F. Graham Jr.
A Useful Planting-Jig And Plot Design For Experimental Plantings, Ben F. Graham Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In experimental plantings intended to demonstrate interactions between plants it is desirable that the distance between plants be uniform. A planting pattern is suggested in which each of 100 plants is equidistant from all of its neighbors; and a simple planting-jig, which is readily adaptable for spacings up to one meter, is described.

Semi-Controlled Hunting Of Waterfowl At Lake Odessa, Louisa County, Lowa - 1960 And 1961, James G. Sieh, William Aspelmeier
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1960 and in 1961 two "controlled" shooting areas with a total of 25 '"blind" sites were established at Lake Odessa, Wapello, Iowa. The remaining "uncontrolled" portion of the public hunting area was open without special restrictions. Checking stations were operated at each of the two main access points. A total of 6,014 hunters harvested 6,499 waterfowl in 33,968 hours, averaging one bird for each 5.2 hours of hunting in 1960. In 1961 a total of 3,391 hunters killed 3,391 waterfowl in 17,618 hours, averaging one bird for each 5.2 hours of hunting. Hunter success, expressed as the number of …
The Control Of Nuisance Aquatic Vegetation With Black Polyethylene Plastic, J. K. Mayhew, Sylvan T. Runkel
The Control Of Nuisance Aquatic Vegetation With Black Polyethylene Plastic, J. K. Mayhew, Sylvan T. Runkel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Large sheets of black polyethylene plastic were to control nuisance aquatic vegetation in small farm ponds and lakes. The plastic was floated over vegetation beds and left unattended for a predetermined number of days. Adequate control of all species of Potomageton was achieved in 10 to 18 days. Ceratophyllum demersum was eliminated in the control plots in 18 to 28 days. Control was unsuccessful for Chara vulgaris and Saggattarius latifolia. All control plots were revegetated with filamentous algae within 30 days after the covering was removed.
Destructive Distillation Products Of Certain Iowa Carbonaceous Shales, Lionel K. Arnold
Destructive Distillation Products Of Certain Iowa Carbonaceous Shales, Lionel K. Arnold
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Modified Fischer retort assays resulted in up to 23.2 gallons of oil per ton of shale from carbonaceous shales from southern Iowa coal fields. Destructive distillation was also carried out in two different laboratory retorts. Yields of an oily liquid up to 39.9 gallons per ton were secured. Analyses showed one sample consisting of 89.4 per cent pentene-1 and 9.2 per cent 2-methyl butane with minor amounts of other compounds. Some combustible gas and a solid residue of possible value for road use were also obtained.
The Value Of Demonstration In Human Maze Learning, Richard A. Panman, Sidney J. Arenson, Milton E. Rosenbaum
The Value Of Demonstration In Human Maze Learning, Richard A. Panman, Sidney J. Arenson, Milton E. Rosenbaum
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In a first experiment, forty subjects were assigned to one of four groups. Each of these groups received one, two or three demonstrations, or no demonstration at all of a task on a bolt-head maze. It was found that number of demonstrations and reduction of errors per trial were positively related up to two demonstrations but no additional increment in performance appeared for three demonstrations. In a second experiment, error making by a demonstrator was contrasted with skilled demonstration. Three demonstrations with errors resulted in significantly fewer errors per trial than two demonstrations with errors. Three skilled errorless demonstration was …

Scheming For Resource Management, Lester F. Faber
Scheming For Resource Management, Lester F. Faber
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the past 25 years much good conservation work has been done in Iowa. It is now time to re-evaluate existing facilities and services provided for Iowa citizens by the Conservation Commission. It is time to take stock of what we have in relation to existing public needs, and to plan ahead to meet anticipated demands by the people of this state. To decide what to do in the future it is perhaps best to set out existing problems and add a pinch of crystal ball to see what the future might hold. Studies and surveys must be carried out …
Notes On Iowa Diatoms Ii. Species Distribution In A Subaerial Habitat, Eugene F. Stoermer
Notes On Iowa Diatoms Ii. Species Distribution In A Subaerial Habitat, Eugene F. Stoermer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A collection made near the base of a small waterfall in Marion County, Iowa, was examined. A total of 22, - 294, specimens of diatoms were studied and found to include 40 species and varieties representing 13 genera. It was found that approximately half of the entities determined are well represented in the local aquatic flora. The remainder comprise entities described by previous authors as being characteristically found in northern, alpine, or aerial environments. In the case of five of the entities no specific determination was made.
A Central Iowa Pheasant Nesting Study, 1961, Vernon Wright, Paul Otte
A Central Iowa Pheasant Nesting Study, 1961, Vernon Wright, Paul Otte
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study of nesting success of pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) on three areas in central Iowa in 1961 showed that the peak of nest establishment occurred between May 16 and May 30. Hatching success varied inversely with pheasant population density. Twenty-four of the 96 nests found hatched successfully. Roadsides sheltered the highest percentage of nests on a per acre basis (46 nests/100 acres), followed by hayfields (24 nests/100 acres) and oatfields (4.7 nests/100 acres). Idle land and fence rows contained the fewest number of nests. Most nests were located in cover from 16 to 22 inches in height. No significant …
Effects Of Continued Selfing On Hymenolepis Nano (Cestoda), Wallace A. Rodgers, Martin J. Ulmer
Effects Of Continued Selfing On Hymenolepis Nano (Cestoda), Wallace A. Rodgers, Martin J. Ulmer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The effects of selfing on Hymenolepis nana were investigated by establishing single infections in mice, thus ensuring self-fertilization. Selfing appears to increase the frequency of cysticercoid abnormalities. The proportion of eggs developing into cysticercoids in Tribolium confusum appears to decrease with continued selfing. Similarly, the proportion of cysticercoids developing into adults in mice decreases with continued selfing. Selfing causes no observable variation in the size of either adults or cysticercoids, nor does it cause changes in the frequency of appearance of certain morphological variants of the adult worm. The variant of reversal of genital pore appears to cause sterility of …
Active Transport Of D-Galactose And 3-0-Methylglucose By Turtle Lntestine, Alice Marie Fox
Active Transport Of D-Galactose And 3-0-Methylglucose By Turtle Lntestine, Alice Marie Fox
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Isolated segments of the intestine of turtle (Chrysemys picta) were found to transport D-galactose and 3-0-methyglucose against a concentration gradient in vitro at 30° C. Uptake of both sugars by the mucosal epithelium was directly dependent upon the concentration of sugar in the external fluid. Evidence indicated that 3-methylglucose is not metabolized by turtle intestinal tissue while D-galactose is. Both sugars were absorbed well by upper or middle intestinal segments, but 3-0-methyglucose was absorbed at a faster rate than D-galactose. It was concluded that neither substitution of the hydroxyl group at the third Carbon of the ring by a …
Creel Census Of Des Moines River Fishermen In Boone, Dallas, And Polk Counties, Iowa, Harry M. Harrison
Creel Census Of Des Moines River Fishermen In Boone, Dallas, And Polk Counties, Iowa, Harry M. Harrison
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Creel censuses were conducted on the Des Moines River during the open water seasons, usually April through November, from 1953 through 1961. The data indicated a relatively constant catch of fish. The rate of annual catch varied between a minimum of 0.26 and a maximum of 0.61 fish per fisherman-hour. The data were also analyzed by "proficiency categories" involving (1) all fishermen, (2) fishermen with one fish, (3) fishermen with two fish, and (4) fishermen with three or more fish. The most proficient fishermen (those with three or more fish at the time of interview) constituted l3 per cent of …

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Skvor-Hartl Area, Southeast Linn County, Iowa, Verne E. Dow, Steward D. Metler
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
An area in southeast Linn County, Iowa is discussed in which a number of geological units from the Coralville limestone (Devonian) through the Silurian are exposed in a very small area. A map is included which shows the outcrop pattern and axis of the major structural feature, a sharp narrow northeast-southwest trending syncline. Smaller folds, and at least one fault are indicated. The study was based on exposures and a number of scores.
Conodont Zonation Of The Early Upper Devonian In Eastern Iowa, Gilbert Klapper, W. M. Furnish
Conodont Zonation Of The Early Upper Devonian In Eastern Iowa, Gilbert Klapper, W. M. Furnish
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The type section of the Sweetland Creek Shale in Muscatine County has yielded a sequence of five distinct conodont faunas which correspond almost exactly to a zonation of the Upper Devonian Frasnian Stage by Ziegler (1962 b) in the Rhineland. In addition, the nearby Campbell's Run section has produced the lower three faunas. The Sweetland Creek is equivalent in part to the Independence Formation, and is regarded as representing the southeastern extension of that unit in its true stratigraphic position above the Cedar Valley Formation.
