The Direct Spectrophotometric Determination Of Fluoride Ion, Gerald F. Brunzie, Ronald T. Pflaum Jan 1962

The Direct Spectrophotometric Determination Of Fluoride Ion, Gerald F. Brunzie, Ronald T. Pflaum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A direct method for the determination of fluoride ion in the parts per million range is described. The color reaction of fluoride ion and lanthanum chelate of 3-aminomethylalizarin- N,N-diacetic acid forms the basis for the spectrophotometric method. The intense blue fluoride complex in a mixed solvent system of 16% dimethylformamide- 84% water is stable and independent of pH in the range of 4.6-5.6. Other halogens and common anions do not interfere in the measurements. Interfering ions are removed through ion exchange separations. Results on the determination of fluorine in selected samples are presented.

Culture Of Excised Embryos Of Pinus Ponderosa, Virgil K. Howe Jan 1962

Culture Of Excised Embryos Of Pinus Ponderosa, Virgil K. Howe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Embryos of Pinus ponderosa Laws. were excised and placed on a nutrient agar medium to which auxins in varying concentrations had been added. Results indicated that when the auxins were dissolved in and diluted with 40 per cent alcohol there was inhibition of seedling growth and development. Techniques were devised which eliminated the use of alcohol. In the absence of alcohol, morphologically normal seedlings were produced which were transferred to quartz sand after 60 days and at 113 days were transplanted into soil. Apparent normal growth and development continued throughout the duration of the experiment. The addition of auxins produced …

Vernal Breeding Of Cottontails In Iowa, Paul D. Kline Jan 1962

Vernal Breeding Of Cottontails In Iowa, Paul D. Kline

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of 399 cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsii) taken during the winter and spring of 1958 through 1961 have established the early portion of the breeding season for the species in Iowa. Males attained breeding condition starting in February. Pregnant females occurred late in February. Most females became pregnant for the first time in March. All females examined after April 1 were pregnant. Differences in commencement of the breeding season from one year to another were noted. A statistically significant difference in average size of first and second embryonic litters was noted. Litters from northern Iowa averaged larger than those …

Alluvial Fan Development At Franklin Bluffs, Alaska, Gary S. Anderson, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1962

Alluvial Fan Development At Franklin Bluffs, Alaska, Gary S. Anderson, Keith M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is concerned with the developmental history of alluvial fans forming in a tundra climate. The study was made at Franklin Bluffs, Alaska (69° 48' - 70° 00' N, 148° 40' W), during the summer of 1961. The area is an ideal place in which to study the developmental history of alluvial fans in that so many stages are present in a relatively small area.

A theoretical sequence of fan development was set up, illustrated by examples from the Franklin Bluffs, which show how certain characteristics of an alluvial fan, forming in a tundra climate, change as the sequence …

Error Trends In Paired-Associates Learning After Response Familiarization, Maryhelen Hart, Marlyn E. Marshall Jan 1962

Error Trends In Paired-Associates Learning After Response Familiarization, Maryhelen Hart, Marlyn E. Marshall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study was run to reveal the course of overt errors over paired-associate trials when response learning was eliminated, and to determine a method of satisfying Ss on such a task for use in treating data from a subsequent motor task learned to the same stimuli. Sixty-eight Ss were given thorough response familiarization, followed by 17 anticipation trials of a paired-associate task using verbal responses to non-verbal stimuli. Subsequently they received 30 trials on the Star Discrimeter. Mean % correct responses and errors were plotted across pretraining trials. Ss were divided into two strata on the basis of pretraining scores …

Yield Components In Oats. Vi. Their Value In Selecting For Yield, K. J. Frey Jan 1962

Yield Components In Oats. Vi. Their Value In Selecting For Yield, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

F2 derived lines from 6 oat crosses were evaluated for production of the two yield components, spikelets per panicle and seed weight in 1958. From the yield component data the yielding ability of each line was predicted. All lines having a predicted yielding capacity of ll0% or more were tested for actual yielding ability in 1959. The calculated yield differential between the means of the selected lines and of the whole population was 16%, whereas the mean differential for actual yield in 1959 was only 5%. In a companion study using 5 of the crosses, grain yield itself was the …

A Post-Kansan Peat At Grinnell, Iowa: A Preliminary Report, Ben F. Graham Jr. Jan 1962

A Post-Kansan Peat At Grinnell, Iowa: A Preliminary Report, Ben F. Graham Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In June, 1960, a 2-ft. post-Kansan peat deposit was exposed in a building excavation in Grinnell (Poweshiek Co.), Iowa. A Kansan gumbotil lies beneath the peat, and approximately 16 ft. of loess lies above it. Well-preserved wood and pollen of coniferous forest species are abundant. Because there is no overlying till, the deposit is tentatively classified as of Buchanan age.

Iowa Fungi Parasitic On Nematodes, Don C. Norton Jan 1962

Iowa Fungi Parasitic On Nematodes, Don C. Norton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seventeen species of fungi parasitic on nematodes are newly recorded in Iowa. These are Acrostalagmus obovatus, Arthrobotrys conoides, A. musiformis, A. oligospora, Dactylaria brochopaga, Dactyldla acrochaeta, D. doedycoides, Haptoglossa heterospora, Harposporium anguillulae, H. lilliputanum, H. oxycoracum, Meria coniospora, Nematoctonus tylosporus, Spicaria coccospora, Stylopage grandis, S. leiohypha and Triposporina aphanopaga. A species of Zoophagus which captured nematodes was found in rotting wood and leaf mulch. Arthrobotrys conoides was the most common nematode parasitic fungus found in forage legume fields. It was followed in prevalence by a sterile fungus. In woodlands, A. oligospora predominated followed by Dactylella gephyropaga.

Infection Of Quercus Macrocarpa By White And Gray Isolates Of Ceratocystis Fagacearum, M. A. Marchetti Jan 1962

Infection Of Quercus Macrocarpa By White And Gray Isolates Of Ceratocystis Fagacearum, M. A. Marchetti

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Cultural studies were made of 348 bur oak branches inoculated with white and gray isolates of Ceratocystis fagacearum at diametrically opposed loci. Approximately 15 per cent of the branches developed foliar symptoms of oak wilt, yielded C. fagacearum, or both. More than one-third of the visibly diseased branches did not yield this fungus. Part of the failures were attributed to competition from other fungi and bacteria, isolated commonly from wood of both inoculated and uninoculated branches. No branches yielded both isolates of the pathogen. Distribution of the two isolates among trees indicated preferential susceptibility of the host may contribute to …

Anomalous Gas Exchange In Ascorbate Oxidation By The Myrothecium Enzyme, E. B. Lillehoj, F. G. Smith Jan 1962

Anomalous Gas Exchange In Ascorbate Oxidation By The Myrothecium Enzyme, E. B. Lillehoj, F. G. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Manometric studies were employed to assay for ascorbic acid oxidase activity in cell free homogenates from the mycelium of the mold Myrothecium verrucaria. It was found that gas exchange measurements deviated from expected stoichiometry based on the utilization of one-half of a mole of oxygen for every mole of ascorbate oxidized. Oxygen was consumed in excess of the expected amount and carbon dioxide was produced during the course of the reaction. Apparently, the ascorbic acid oxidase reaction which produces dehydroascorbic acid is accompanied by or followed by other reactions involving oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide evolution.

Motor Performance After Four Kinds Of Verbal Pretraining, Marilyn E. Marshall, Don Lewis Jan 1962

Motor Performance After Four Kinds Of Verbal Pretraining, Marilyn E. Marshall, Don Lewis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four groups of 20 Ss each were given 36 paired-associates trials on each of six random shapes. The four groups learned verbal responses which were, respectively, high in association value and formally distinct (HD), high in association value and formally similar (HS), low in association value and formally distinct (LD), and low in association value and formally similar (LS). An additional group (A) attended to motor task stimuli during 216 nonverbal pretraining trials, while a control group (I) learned medium association value distinct syllables to stimuli different from those which subsequently appeared in the motor task. Errors and correct responses …

Ovarian Analysis For Data On Corpora Lutea Changes In White-Tailed Deer, Arnold O. Haugen, David L. Trauger Jan 1962

Ovarian Analysis For Data On Corpora Lutea Changes In White-Tailed Deer, Arnold O. Haugen, David L. Trauger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reproductive capacity of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Iowa was determined for the period 1957 to 1961. Ovarian structures were checked in 425 pairs of ovaries. Physical characteristics of corpora lutea and corpora albicantia were checked. Breeding by fawns was indicated by the presence of an average of 1.09 corpora lutea per doe in their first winter of life, and by 0.87 corpora albicantia between the ages of 1 and 2 years. This indicates a loss or lack of detection of 25 per cent of the corpora albicantia. As is to be expected, no corpora albicantia were …

Radiochemistry And Removal Characteristics Of Radium Isotopes In Iowa Well Waters, R. L. Morris, J. W. Klinsky Jan 1962

Radiochemistry And Removal Characteristics Of Radium Isotopes In Iowa Well Waters, R. L. Morris, J. W. Klinsky

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Significant concentrations of radium -226, a naturally occurring isotope which has no relationship to fallout, have been detected in a number of deep wells in Iowa. Wells that have significant radium concentrations are located in smaller communities mostly in southeastern part of the State. Several of the towns have municipal zeolite softening processes which remove radium down to low levels. In some cases where the raw well water shows relatively high concentrations, zeolite softened water distributed to the public has had approximately 90 percent of the radium removed. Wells tested so far show that the average radium values are in …

A Class Of Vector Functions With Linear Norms, George Seifert Jan 1962

A Class Of Vector Functions With Linear Norms, George Seifert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In some work with systems of ordinary differential equations, a certain compact convex subset of a Banach space of vector-valued functions continuous on the real closed interval [0,l] was introduced [l]. The topology in this Banach space is induced by the supremum norm, while the norm used in the n-dimensional vector space of function values is arbitrary. It is observed in this note that all functions of this class have the same norm, a linear function on the set [0,l]. However, the nature of this subset depends rather markedly on the type of vector norm used.
