Food Habits Of The Yellow Bass, Roccus Mississippiensis, Clear Lake, Iowa, Summer 1962, Rudy Kraus Jan 1963

Food Habits Of The Yellow Bass, Roccus Mississippiensis, Clear Lake, Iowa, Summer 1962, Rudy Kraus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Return of Clear Lake water levels to normal was accompanied by some increase in growth of yellow bass in 1962. Entomostracans, chironomids and Hyalella sp. were the principal foods of young yellow bass. Immature insects, principally Diptera, were the predominant foods of older bass with claclocera, Hyalella sp. and copepods next in importance. There was no increase in utilization of small fish as food. Yellow bass were more active and fed more at night than in daytime.

Some Aspects Of Territorial Behavior Of The Fantail Darter, Melvin F. Seifert Jan 1963

Some Aspects Of Territorial Behavior Of The Fantail Darter, Melvin F. Seifert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Striped fantail darters, Etheostoma flabellare lineolatum, were maintained in small aerated aquaria and fed tubificid worms. Darters over 1inch long established and defended territories usually no larger than a nook under rocks. Darters, over 2 inches long, selected covers open on both sides, but medium-sized darters selected smaller, more secluded covers. Dominance in selection of territory was associated with size, although established darters might maintain their covers against larger newcomers. Stone bottom was selected over pebble and pebble over sand. Pigmentation seemed to show an effect in habitat selection.

Expansion Of Montimorillonite Due To Adsorption Of Water Vapor, G. L. Roderick, Turgut Demirel Jan 1963

Expansion Of Montimorillonite Due To Adsorption Of Water Vapor, G. L. Roderick, Turgut Demirel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Expansions of pure sodium and calcium montmorillonites due to absorption of water vapor were studied and the results were correlated with X-ray diffraction and free swelling studies. Specimens of various porosities were used. Results indicate that the uptake of water is a multimolecular physical adsorption phenomenon which justifies application of BET theory. Porosity of specimens did not appreciably affect their expansions due to adsorption of water vapor. Sodium montmorillonite expanded appreciably more than calcium montmorillonite. At near saturation vapor pressure, calcium montmorillonite has attained practically its maximum swelling, while sodium montmorillonite will expand further if exposed to liquid water. Free …

Stabilization Of Two Iowa Limestones With Fly Ash Alone, Manuel Mateos Jan 1963

Stabilization Of Two Iowa Limestones With Fly Ash Alone, Manuel Mateos

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fly ash has been used together with lime in the stabilization of soils. Some fly ashes were found to harden and develop strength without addition of lime. One of these fly ashes was used to stabilize two crushed limestones. After 28 days moist curing, specimens of limestone mixed with 20 per cent fly ash showed water stable strengths of 400 psi. The stabilization of soils with fly ashes that react without lime is one of the cheapest soil stabilization methods.

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward Guidance Of Guidance Counselors And Graduate Students Preparing As School Administrators, Jan Ness Flickinger Jan 1963

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward Guidance Of Guidance Counselors And Graduate Students Preparing As School Administrators, Jan Ness Flickinger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the big problems of the present mass educational program in America is how can the educational program be organized so each child has an opportunity to satisfy his needs. Although there is no completely satisfactory answer to this question, one attempt to solve this problem has been the establishment of guidance programs in schools. For the purpose of this study the writer is assuming that guidance is an essential part of education and consequently needed in school.

An Evaluation Of An Inventory Instrument Designed To Measure The Attitudes Of Some Iowa High School Band Students, Joseph Doering Doolittle Jan 1963

An Evaluation Of An Inventory Instrument Designed To Measure The Attitudes Of Some Iowa High School Band Students, Joseph Doering Doolittle

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study is an attempt to determine whether an attitude-inventory instrument applicable to high school band students can be developed. The purpose of this study is to gain evidence supporting these general hypotheses: That an attitude inventory can be constructed to measure the responses of high school band students in certain attitude areas. That differences can be found between the responses of high school band students having positive attitudes toward the band program, and those band students having negative attitudes toward the band program. That band directors can discriminate between high school band students having positive and negative attitudes, but …

Your Teen-Ager And The School Counselor: A Handbook For Parents, Donald Lee Bennink Jan 1963

Your Teen-Ager And The School Counselor: A Handbook For Parents, Donald Lee Bennink

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Public Law 85-864 was signed by the President of the United States on September 2, 1958. This law, known as the National Defense Education Act (hereafter referred to as NDEA), is composed of ten titles affecting most levels and many phases of education. Its billion dollars, though authorized for a dozen separate programs, have been authorized for a single purpose - that every young person, from the day he first enters school, should have an opportunity to develop his gifts to the fullest. This is the emphasis that gives the Act its name, for it recognizes that in a free …

The Development Of A Handbook For Use In The Selection Of Materials On Communism For Secondary Social Studies Classes, Richard Raymond Olmsted Jan 1963

The Development Of A Handbook For Use In The Selection Of Materials On Communism For Secondary Social Studies Classes, Richard Raymond Olmsted

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Following World War Two, the United States and the Soviet Union became the chief rivals for world leadership. Because of this, communism replaced fascism as the totalitarian ideology of most concern to Americans. This new situation brought with it a series of problems for the public schools: Should secondary schools teach about communism? How should this topic be approached? What materials should be provided for use by high school students?

For a time, public hysteria prevented the logical resolution of these problems. George B. Bruntz describes this period in the following way:

There was a time when the mere mention …

The Impeachment And Trial Of William Worth Belknap, Secretary Of War, Roger Dean Bridges Jan 1963

The Impeachment And Trial Of William Worth Belknap, Secretary Of War, Roger Dean Bridges

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is a great injustice to judge a person's life by the incidents that occupy a period of only one-tenth of his career. Yet that has happened in the case of William Worth Belknap. Not only has his career been judged by events covering such a small period of time, but the information that has appeared about him has been colored by the same events. Therefore, it is fitting that before Belknap's record in conjunction with the trader-post scandal as Secretary of War is examined, his total career should be sketched. To the best of this writer's knowledge, no accurate …

Aspects Of The Speechmaking In The Iowa Circuit Chautauqua 1904-1924, Evelyn Marie Hade

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the early part of the twentieth century, communities all over the United States witnessed programs presented by entertainers and lecturers affiliated with the circuit chautauqua. A great deal of speaking was done in connection with these programs . The following study was undertaken to discover the place and function of the speechmaking done in the circuit chautauqua. Because the state of Iowa has sometimes been called "the heart of the chautauqua", Iowa was chosen for this investigation.

A Study Of The Esterification Of 1, 4-Cyclohexanedimethanol, Robert Keith Harter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The alicyclic glycol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol* has recently been made available in volume quantities by Eastman Chemical Products, Inc. Experimental data obtained by their own laboratories indicate that the diol has unusually good reactivity. 1 The reactivity of the diol has been attributed to the two primary hydroxyl groups . Derivatives of the diol may be of use industrially because they exhibit thermal and hydrolytic stability. Several diesters show excellent permanence as plasticizers in plastic films. 2

A Study Of The Career Patterns And Formal Education Of Selected Managers Of Illinois Limited Price Variety Stores, Robert W. Jefferson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In American society prospective workers focus much attention upon the selection of a career occupation. The choosing of an appropriate field is becoming increasingly important at an earlier age in a young person's life. The choosing of an occupation may be affected by parents, friends , aptitudes, education or skills required, and the ambition of the prospective employee. The increase or decrease of the number of workers in a given field of employment may affect the desire of prospective employees to enter a given position or level. Today we are witnessing rapid technological changes that have eliminated some jobs, created …

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming Jan 1963

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Guidance in the public schools of the United States is a fairly recent development. The Vocational Bureau, established by Frank Parsons in 1909, represented one of the first organized efforts to supplement home guidance. Since that time the scope of guidance has expanded from vocational guidance to include educational and socio-personal guidance as well. With the rapid increase in guidance services in schools, research concerning the guidance program has not kept pace. Much of the information and material published is based on an inadequate background of research. Authors have speculated on the values and place of guidance, but have had …
