The Production Of Agglutinins In Response To Antigens Of Ascaris Lumricoides Var. Suum, James Lee Prouty Jan 1963

The Production Of Agglutinins In Response To Antigens Of Ascaris Lumricoides Var. Suum, James Lee Prouty

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of immunological reactions with Ascaris lumbricoides var. suum have been carried out by a number of investigators involving in vitro and in vivo tests. As far as can be determined agglutinin antibodies have not been demonstrated. It seems likely that agglutinins may be produced in experimental animals if appropriate techniques for their demonstration are devised. Two rabbits were bled initially from the external marginal ear vein. These sera were used as controls. The rabbits were immunized with body fluid and egg antigens of Ascaris lumbricoides var. suum at various intervals for a three and one-half week period. At the …

How Experimental Is Chemistry?, Andrew W. Stevenson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It is generally felt that chemistry is an experimental science. This is the idea conveyed concerning the general high school chemistry course. The big question is, to what degree the course is experimental? It is time to take stock of the situation.

In every science classroom a student may expect to discover something he has never seen before. The mimosa plant, which is shown full bloom on the front cover, is an ideal plant for your students to discover. The plant has the strange property of being able to move away, or fold up, whenever it is touched.

Effects Of Stimulus Meaningfulness On Star Discrimeter Performance, R. H. Peters Jan 1963

Effects Of Stimulus Meaningfulness On Star Discrimeter Performance, R. H. Peters

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a motor task provided by the Star Discrimeter, Ss learned to move a wobble stick into channels corresponding to six verbal stimuli. Two levels of stimulus meaningfulness (M) were used. The stimuli for the high M group were words, and the stimuli for the low M group were paralogs. Prior to motor task learning, 30 of the 60 Ss in each M group received relevant stimulus familiarization training. The S pronounced each dissyllable 20 times. The remaining Ss received irrelevant familiarization training. The S pronounced the name of six common shapes 20 times each. The results indicated that both …

The Vincennes Magnetic Anomaly Lee County, Lowa, D. H. Hase Jan 1963

The Vincennes Magnetic Anomaly Lee County, Lowa, D. H. Hase

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Relative measurements of the vertical magnetic intensity in southern Lee County, Iowa, were made with a tripod-mounted, Askania Torsion Magnetometer, Type Gfz. The Vincennes magnetic anomaly is attributed to a body of magnetic rock in the Precambrian crystalline complex. From diamond drilling, the top of the body is known to be about 2900 feet below the surface. Although no unique interpretation is possible, a mathematical analysis of the magnetic data suggests that the body may be shaped something like a shallow dish approximately 1,000 feet thick through a diameter of 3 miles and tapering to a feather-edge at a diameter …
