Evaluation Of Autoclave Induced Expansion Of Some Iowa Carbonate Rocks, L. D. Vredenburgh, John Lemish Jan 1964

Evaluation Of Autoclave Induced Expansion Of Some Iowa Carbonate Rocks, L. D. Vredenburgh, John Lemish

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An autoclave environment of 110°C and a steam pressure of 25 psi. was used to develop a rapid method of determining the expansive characteristics of some carbonate rocks. The current procedure for such determinations requires several weeks treatment of the aggregate sample in a lN NaOH solution at room conditions. Application of the autoclave method indicates that the rate of expansion is greatly increased but that the actual mechanism of expansion is not changed. Only those samples placed in an alkaline solution in the autoclave expanded. Control samples in distilled water showed negligible expansion. The expansion data obtained by the …

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt Jan 1964

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationship between population density and rate of dispersal and tendency to aggregate in two species of fresh-water amphipods, Hyalella azteca (Saussure) and Cammarus pseudolimnaeus Bousfield, was tested by laboratory experiment. Populations of H. azteca showed an inverse relationship between initial density and dispersal rate; this relationship is a function of the tendency of populations of higher densities to form aggregations. The dispersal rate of G. pseudolimnaeus was not appreciably affected by changes in population density, and increased density did not result in aggregation. Both species aggregated around vegetation in preference to aggregation around other amphipods. The non-aggressive behavior and …

Solvolysis Of 1,2-Epoxydodecane, S. Wawzonek, H. J. Bluhm Jan 1964

Solvolysis Of 1,2-Epoxydodecane, S. Wawzonek, H. J. Bluhm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The solvolysis of 1,2-epoxydodecane in formic acid followed by saponification gave mainly 1,2-dodecanediol and a small amount of the isomeric 2,2'-dihydroxydidodecyl ethers. No products from a coil effect were isolated. The structure of the ether was demonstrated by oxidation and synthesis. Assignment of configuration to the isomeric ethers was made on the basis of the infrared spectra.

Movement And Angler Harvest Of Fishes In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Lowa, David J. Behmer Jan 1964

Movement And Angler Harvest Of Fishes In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Lowa, David J. Behmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fish tagging returns of the Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit from 1955 to the end of 1963 are summarized. Tag returns give minimum estimates of angler harvest as 4.6%, for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and 12.0% for walleyes, Stizostedion vitreum. Very few flathead catfish, Pylodictis olivaris, and smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieui, were reported caught by anglers. Channel catfish showed greatest movement of the species studied with downstream movement predominating. Walleyes moved as far as 18 miles. Smallmouth bass showed very little movement, except for one individual that moved about 40 miles. Data on both angler harvest and movement must be …

Geologic Interpretation Of Magnetic Map, Washington County, Lowa, D. H. Hase Jan 1964

Geologic Interpretation Of Magnetic Map, Washington County, Lowa, D. H. Hase

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1963, ground measurements of the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field were made in Washington County, Iowa. The magnetic variations are attributed to differences in the lithology and configuration of the Precambrian crystalline basement complex about which no direct geologic information is available. Although a unique interpretation of the magnetic data is impossible owing to the limited geologic control, it is proposed that the basement complex is at a depth of 2,600 to 5,000 feet, may be cut by a northeasterly trending fault occurring near the city of Washington, and exhibits topographic relief which controls the formation of …

Team Oriented Research In The High School, D. N. West

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The purpose of this article is to describe a method used by the author to introduce a group of high school students to the research method. The initial search of literature and type of experimentation always require much expenditure of time and effort. Beyond a doubt the most consuming part of the entire investigation is verification of data obtained.

Collection And Culture Of Lower Animal Forms, Cameron L. Christensen Jan 1964

Collection And Culture Of Lower Animal Forms, Cameron L. Christensen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The trend in secondary biology is to use living material in so far as it is possible. Biology instruction, as it has advanced beyond the descriptive level, has included more projects requiring living animals. The local collecting and culturing of some of these organisms adds just that much more biological experience to the course.

Notes On Iowa Diatoms. Vi. Frustular Aberrations In Surirella Ovalis, Ryan W. Drum Jan 1964

Notes On Iowa Diatoms. Vi. Frustular Aberrations In Surirella Ovalis, Ryan W. Drum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two types of frustular aberrations in cultures of Surirella ovalis Breb. have been observed. The first is a "notch deformity" occurring in approximately 0.1% of the population. It is produced by mechanical distortion where the cells are crowded. This deformity is passed to daughter cells in each successive vegetative division. The second type is characterized by the presence of one or more aberrant raphe canals crossing the valve face in various directions. It occurred only in cultures exposed to continuous light for two weeks. Little or no cell division occurred during this period. The raphe canal aberrations, which occurred in …

A Study Of The Small Rodents Of Black Hawk County, Iowa (1961-1962), Raymond L. Sloan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two-hundred and fifty-nine small rodents were collected in Black Hawk County, Iowa, from June 1961 to June 1962. Specimens were taken from 53 locations in the county. Specimens of the following species were collected: Spermophilus tridecemlineatus tridecemlineatus, Reithrodontomys megalotis dychei, Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii, Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis, Microtus pennsylvanicus pennsylvanicus, Microtus ochrogaster ochrogaster, and Mus musculus. Perognathus flavescens perniger and Tamias striatus griseus were reported to have been obtained by other investigators, but neither was taken during this study period.
