Growth Responses Of A Myxomycete To Treatment With Plant Growth Regulating Substances, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Joselet Mary Ousephparampil Jan 1964

Growth Responses Of A Myxomycete To Treatment With Plant Growth Regulating Substances, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Joselet Mary Ousephparampil

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Protoplasmodia of Clastoderma debaryanum multiply in culture to produce more individual plasmodia, each of which fruits into a single sporangium. After treatment of cultures with 1 ppm kinetin and with 1 ppm, 5 ppm, and 10 ppm aqueous solutions of 3-indoleacetic acid, the number of sporangia produced was consistently greater than in controls. Fewer sporangia, as compared to controls, were produced after treatment with kinetin at 5 ppm and 10 ppm, and no consistent results were obtained after treatment with gibberellic acid at the same concentrations.

The Effect Of Wind On Transpiration And Evaporation Through Multiperforate Septa, Irwin P. Ting, Walter E. Loomis Jan 1964

The Effect Of Wind On Transpiration And Evaporation Through Multiperforate Septa, Irwin P. Ting, Walter E. Loomis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diffusion of water vapor through single-pore membranes with pores 100 to 800 μ in diameter and multipore membranes with pores 2.5 to 20 μ in diameter was studied as a function of wind velocity. The results of these studies are compared with data obtained with transpiring leaves in wind. It was found that wind had relatively little effect on small pores as compared with large pores and free water surfaces. The primary response of stomates or small, isolated pores to wind was simply an increase in the diffusion gradient. In general, the wind-to-still-air diffusion ratios determined with the use of …

The Solubility Of Wheat Gluten In Various Aqueous Solutions, Lionel K. Arnold, R. Basu Roy Choudhury, Devendralal C. Dangoria Jan 1964

The Solubility Of Wheat Gluten In Various Aqueous Solutions, Lionel K. Arnold, R. Basu Roy Choudhury, Devendralal C. Dangoria

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Solubilities of "vital" wheat gluten in dilute solutions of sodium hydroxide, acetic acid, sodium carbonate, ethanol, and monoethanolamine at 55°C were determined. Solubilities at 30°C in dilute solutions of sodium hydroxide, acetic acid, monoethanolamine, and sodium borate were also determined. Sodium hydroxide, monoethanolamine, and acetic acid solutions were the best solvents.

The Photodimer From B-Nitrostyrene, Richard D. Campbell, Ronald F. Ofstead Jan 1964

The Photodimer From B-Nitrostyrene, Richard D. Campbell, Ronald F. Ofstead

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Photodimerization of β-nitrostyrene by sunlight or a mercury arc lamp yields l,3-diphenyl-2,4-dinitrocyclobutane (II). Only one stereoisomer was obtained. Reduction of the dimer gave a diamine which was identical with the diamine produced by the Curtius rearrangement of α-truxillic acid. Thus the structure of II is unequivocally established as 1, trans-3-dipheny-2-cis-4-trans-dinitrocyclobutane. An isomer III of the dimer is identified as having the geometric structure corresponding to y-truxillic acid by a similar series of steps.

Some Aspects Of Pheasant Reproductive Success In Iowa, 1948-1963, Richard C. Nomsen Jan 1964

Some Aspects Of Pheasant Reproductive Success In Iowa, 1948-1963, Richard C. Nomsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A summer sight record project was conducted in Iowa from 1948 through 1963 to check annual production of pheasants. The ratio of juveniles to adult hens, or young per hen, indicated the rate of reproductive success. Young per hen figures indicated trends in the fall pheasant populations each year except 1950. There was a close relationship between reproductive success and mean temperatures for April. This correlation was significant at the 0.05 probability level when results for 1954 were eliminated. Temperatures averaged 12 degrees below normal during the first week of May in 1954, which reduced pheasant production. Results of the …

Age, Growth, Fecundity And Food Habits Of Fantail Darters In Boone County, Lowa, James R. Karr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although 117 fantail darters (Etheostoma flabellare) were collected from Bluff Creek, Boone County, Iowa, during summer 1962 and winter 1962-63, only 1 was found in the Des Moines River. Slenderhead darters occupy the similar riffle areas in the river. Female fantail darters were 18.7, 34.8, and 42.4 mm at the first through the third annuli, respectively, and male darters were 18.5, 36.7, 59.0, and 62.0 mm at the first through the fourth annuli, respectively. No females were found that had formed a fourth annulus. Average coefficient of condition for 104 fantail darters was 1.749. Length-weight relationships for males and …

Morphometric Study Of Two Drainage Basins Near Iowa City, Iowa, Marcus E. Milling, Sherwood D. Tuttle Jan 1964

Morphometric Study Of Two Drainage Basins Near Iowa City, Iowa, Marcus E. Milling, Sherwood D. Tuttle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A morphometric study was made of the adjoining drainage basins of east-flowing Old Man Creek and Clear Creek in Johnson and Iowa counties, Iowa. In terms of the parameters measured, these basins are essentially similar. They agree with "laws" for drainage basins proposed by Horton and are therefore "normal" rather than "misfit". Part of the Clear Creek basin was invaded by Iowan ice and this probably accounts for some abnormal data. Distinct longitudinal asymmetry and obviously steeper south valley walls are probably best explained by the differences in loess thickness on valley sides.

Clay Mineralogy Of A Gumbotil, Wilbourne A. Kelley Iii, Clara Ho Jan 1964

Clay Mineralogy Of A Gumbotil, Wilbourne A. Kelley Iii, Clara Ho

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Investigation of the clay minerals in a gumbotil associated with the Mahaska soil series in Keokuk County, Iowa, indicates that the principal clay mineral is a dioctahedral calcium montmorillonite. Other clay minerals present in this gumbotil are kaolinite and mica, although they are in much smaller percentages. The investigation also pointed out difficulties involved in analyzing this type of soil by standard X-ray procedures and the complications introduced in the analysis of soil samples with high iron content utilizing standard accepted diffraction techniques.

Three Color Photometry Of The Total Eclipse Of The Moon, December 29, 1963, John R. Zink, Satoshi Matsushima Jan 1964

Three Color Photometry Of The Total Eclipse Of The Moon, December 29, 1963, John R. Zink, Satoshi Matsushima

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A three-color photometry of the eclipsed moon was carried out with a 12-inch reflector during the total eclipse on December 30. 1963. In order to examine the intensity and color distribution of refracted light in the umbral region, the observation was centered at Mare Crisium during the course of the eclipse. The decrease in brightness was found to be about 16 magnitudes for each of the three colors, and no significant reddening effect was observed during the totality. The magnitude differences between different colors appear to be nearly the same on the uneclipsed and the totally eclipsed moon.

Adaptation As Related To The Introversion-Extroversion Dimension, Earl D. Scott, David Wilkinson Jan 1964

Adaptation As Related To The Introversion-Extroversion Dimension, Earl D. Scott, David Wilkinson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thirteen young adult men were given a test for introversion-extroversion. They were then tested to determine the number of presentations of a noxious stimulus which was required for adaption to the stimulus to take place, as measured by the galvanic skin response. It was found that extroverts adapted with significantly fewer stimulus presentations than did introverts. The results were related to Eysenck's theory concerning the introversion-extroversion dimension and conditionability.

An Ecological Analysis Of Silver Lake Fen I. The Aquatic Metazoan Fauna, Lawrence Eickstaedt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The aquatic metazoan fauna and physicochemical features of the Silver Lake Fen, Dickinson County, Iowa, were investigated. The pools displayed high values of alkalinity, calcium and total hardness, sulfate and dissolved solids; neutral to alkaline conditions; and extreme diurnal variability in dissolved gasses, pH and temperature. Fifty metazoan species have been collected from this unique and rigorous habitat, with nine species being most abundant and widespread. Possible causal factors dealing with population dispersion are discussed.

Summer Emigrations Of The Frog Rana Pipiens In Northwestern Iowa, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Ann M. Bovbjerg Jan 1964

Summer Emigrations Of The Frog Rana Pipiens In Northwestern Iowa, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Ann M. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summers of 1961, 1962, and 1963, mass emigrations of Rana pipiens pipiens Schreber occurred at the end of the first week in July. The intensity of the movement varied in the three years. Environmental causes for this movement were considered; temperature changes, precipitation or crowding do not seem to be operating. Samples of the tadpole populations were examined and the metamorphic changes prior to emigration are rapid and regular. With final metamorphosis into juvenile frogs, the emigration suddenly begins. It appears to be triggered by internal events related to maturation.

Gizzard Lesions Associated With Haemoproteus Sacharovi Infections Of Pigeons, John N. Farmer Jan 1964

Gizzard Lesions Associated With Haemoproteus Sacharovi Infections Of Pigeons, John N. Farmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Becker et al. (1956) described abnormally enlarged spleens and granular gizzards observed in several killed pigeons. Blood films made from these particular birds were diagnosed as positive for Haemoproteus sacharovi. Since mourning doves represent a host for this parasite, four infected doves were killed and selected tissues sectioned and examined in an attempt to locate sites of exoerythrocytic schizogony. None were observed although the spleens of these birds were markedly swollen and colored a mottled purplish-black. Concerning pigeons, however, granular gizzards were observed in each of eight H. sacharovi infected pigeons killed. Examination of sections of infected gizzard revealed areas …

Characteristics Of Instrumentation Personnel In The Aerospace Manufacturing Industry Of The New York Metropolitan Area, Kennith Glenn Gordon Jan 1964

Characteristics Of Instrumentation Personnel In The Aerospace Manufacturing Industry Of The New York Metropolitan Area, Kennith Glenn Gordon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As the aerospace manufacturing industry of the New York Metropolitan Area becomes more deeply involved in industrial, scientific, and military activities, it seems reasonable to expect a corresponding growth in the knowledge and understanding of that industry by the engineering and education professions alike . The engineering profession would require an accurate description of the technical character, while the education profession would be concerned with developing a better understanding of the educational ramifications of this new industry. A study of the entire industry would have required the use of resources beyond the power of the writer. However, it was decided …

A Study Of Adult Typewriting In The Public Schools Of Iowa, Fall 1963, John W. Banks

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Typewriting has been one of the most popular adult courses for many years. There are reasons for this. These reasons have been variously assumed, but very little study or investigation has been made to discover the reasons for interest in adult typewriting or to determine the status and nature of the adult typewriting programs.

A Study Of Selected Employers’ Opinions Regarding The Terminal Education Programs Of Secondary Schools In Davenport, Iowa, Gerald Dwight Clemmensen Jan 1964

A Study Of Selected Employers’ Opinions Regarding The Terminal Education Programs Of Secondary Schools In Davenport, Iowa, Gerald Dwight Clemmensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the failings of American education today is its inability to meet the needs of the average student in high school. Because of this failing, many young people, mostly boys, will drop out of high school sometime between beginning the tenth grade and finishing the twelfth grade. Because American education does not meet the needs of the average student, many youths, job hunting immediately following graduation from high school, will face a more difficult time in locating some type of employment than their elders did during the early 1930's.
