Engel Conditions On Groups, Donald H. Pilgrim
Engel Conditions On Groups, Donald H. Pilgrim
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Let g,c denote positive integers. A group is said to have type (g→c) if every subgroup which can be generated by g elements is nilpotent of class at most c. A result of R. H. Bruck shows that groups of type (4→5) without elements of order 2 are nilpotent of class at most 7. In the present paper the following result is reported: If G is a (4→5) group on 5 generators without elements of order 2, then G is nilpotent of class at most 6.

The Effect Of Number Of Reinforcements And Post-Extinction Interval On Spontaneous Recovery, Earl D. Scott, David L. Knutson
The Effect Of Number Of Reinforcements And Post-Extinction Interval On Spontaneous Recovery, Earl D. Scott, David L. Knutson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Thirty hooded rats were trained in a Skinner box to press a bar to obtain a food reinforcement. Half of the subjects received 30 reinforced trials in training and half received 60 reinforcements. The response was extinguished to a criterion of 10 minutes without the occurrence of a response. Subjects from each of the reinforcement groups were equally divided and assigned to the three post-extinction test groups. One group was tested for spontaneous recovery 24 hours after extinction, the second was tested 48 hours after extinction, and the third group 72 hours following extinction. The only variable found to be …
The Use Of A Thermochemical Experiment In An Introductory Science Class, Verne A. Troxel
The Use Of A Thermochemical Experiment In An Introductory Science Class, Verne A. Troxel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
An experimental method for determining heat of neutralization, in introductory science classes, with simple laboratory equipment is described. Measured values for heat of neutralization determined by this method are compared with the literature values. The experimental method used offers a suitable means for the determination of heat of neutralization.
Observations On The Morphology And Life History Of Oswaldocruzia Sp. In Frogs, B. T. Ridgeway
Observations On The Morphology And Life History Of Oswaldocruzia Sp. In Frogs, B. T. Ridgeway
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A series of experiments were instituted in order to clarify the life history of Oswaldocruzia sp., a nematode of frogs. Suitable hosts were collected and examined for the nematode. Artificial infection of laboratory reared frog tadpoles and young frogs by use of incubated juvenile stages of the parasite was undertaken with negative results. Several reasons are suggested to explain failure of infection attempts. The likelihood that juvenile Oswaldocruzia used experimentally were not infective stages of the parasite is suggested. Morphological characters of the worms support this idea. The possibility that tadpoles and young frogs are refractory to infection, and involvement …

Nematodes Associated With Plants In Lowa, Don C. Norton, W. Arden Irvine, David Castaner
Nematodes Associated With Plants In Lowa, Don C. Norton, W. Arden Irvine, David Castaner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During a preliminary survey of plant parasitic nematodes in Iowa, 55 species, mostly in the Tylenchoidea, were identified. Except for Longidorus, Xiphinema, and Trichodorus, the Dorylaimoidea were not considered. Most samples were taken in forage legume fields and woodlands. The seven genera encountered most frequently were the following, as expressed in percentage of total samples (1,308): Tylenchus (56), Helicotylenchus (40), Xiphinema (36), Aphelenchus (31), Tylenchorhynchus (20), Paratylenchus (14), and Pratylenchus (13). Helicotylenchus microlobus and Xiphinema americanum were among the most common and widespread plant parasitic nematodes found. While H. microlobus occurred most frequently in cultivated fields, H. platyurus was mainly …
An Analysis Of The Developmental Effects Of The Embryonic Lethal Mutation X-23 In Drosophila, Phillip J. Reitan
An Analysis Of The Developmental Effects Of The Embryonic Lethal Mutation X-23 In Drosophila, Phillip J. Reitan
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The developmental abnormalities resulting from a recessive, second chromosome, X-ray induced lethal mutation acting during the embryonic period of Drosophila melanogaster are described. Embryos of 18-22 hours of development were studied. The pattern of abnormalities indicates that the lethal effect was due to a general cessation of development during the period from 9-14 hours. There is a general failure of mid-gut and muscle development. The hypoderm, foregut and hindgut structures appear to have developed normally. In the absence of muscle development, hypodermal differentiation produces deep furrows which distort the structure of the embryo. Variation in the expression of the lethal …
A Quantitative Method For The Study Of Pollen And Spores In Bog Sediments, La Verne H. Durkee
A Quantitative Method For The Study Of Pollen And Spores In Bog Sediments, La Verne H. Durkee
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A filtration method involving a membrane filter for the collection and subsequent microscopic examination of weighed, treated samples is presented. The filter and the sample collected upon it are both mounted for microscopic examination. The filter permits sufficient light passage for identification of spores and pollen upon its surface. This method permits a more accurate transfer of weighed samples from centrifuge tubes to microscope slides.

Glucose Inhibition Of Cellulose Synthesis By Pyrenochaeta Terrestris, J. C. Horton, N. T. Keen
Glucose Inhibition Of Cellulose Synthesis By Pyrenochaeta Terrestris, J. C. Horton, N. T. Keen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The rate of synthesis of Pyrenochacta terrestris cellulase was determined on the substrates of glucose, cellulose, and cellulose + glucose. Enzyme production was rapid on cellulose, almost negligible on glucose, and intermediate on cellulose + glucose. On the latter substrate, cellulase appeared after the near exhaustion of glucose. The authors suggest that extremely low concentrations of soluble carbohydrate regulate cellulase synthesis.
Some Matters Of Concern In The County Conservation Program In Iowa, With Special Reference To Land Use, J. Harold Ennis
Some Matters Of Concern In The County Conservation Program In Iowa, With Special Reference To Land Use, J. Harold Ennis
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Eighty-three of Iowa's 99 counties have established County Conservation Boards. County park areas, river access sites, wildlife areas and roadside parks in that order lead the list in numbers developed to date. Polk, Linn, and Black Hawk counties lead the list in area available with 2544, 2275, and 1952 acres respectively. Special safeguards are urged for administration of lands preserved for scientific purposes.
Iowa Squirrels: Hunting Statistics, Sex And Age Ratios, And The Influence Of Mast And Agriculture, Paul D. Kline
Iowa Squirrels: Hunting Statistics, Sex And Age Ratios, And The Influence Of Mast And Agriculture, Paul D. Kline
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Fox and gray squirrels, Sciurus niger rufiventer Geoffroy and S. carolinensis pennsylvanicus Ord, are commonly hunted in Iowa. Average hunting success for 12 years as reported by hunter-cooperators was 0.8 squirrels bagged and 1.8 seen per gun hour. Significant variations in hunting success from one season to another were found. One squirrel was reported crippled for every 14.8 killed. Fox squirrels comprised 87.1% of the total kill; grays, 12.9%. Conservation officer contacts indicated actual hunting success was below that reported by hunter-cooperators. The cooperators were assumed to be hunters with above average skill as compared to average ability of those …
Solubility Of Dialdehyde Starch In Various Dilute Solutions, Lionel K. Arnold, R. Basu Roy Choudhury, Harry C. Roberts
Solubility Of Dialdehyde Starch In Various Dilute Solutions, Lionel K. Arnold, R. Basu Roy Choudhury, Harry C. Roberts
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The solubilities of 93%, 62%, and 5% dialdehyde starch in 0.5% and 1.0% sodium hydroxide; 0.5%, 1.0% and 5.0% borax; and in 0.5%, 1.0% and 5.0% sodium acetate solutions at 55°C for solution times of 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes were determined as a part of an overall study of DAS-wheat gluten reaction products designed for adhesives. A method for determining the DAS content of solutions from apparent densities was developed. The results indicate that while any dilute inorganic alkaline solution will probably dissolve DAS the choice of reagent will depend upon what is desired in solution time, chain …
