An Intermediate Clarinet Method, John Kenneth Jones Jan 1965

An Intermediate Clarinet Method, John Kenneth Jones

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Teaching intermediate clarinet students presents some unique problems for the instrumental director. Since the clarinetist is expected to play with much facility over a great range, the clarinet has been referred to as the "violin" of the concert band. Students of the instrument are faced with a significant challenge in the development of adequate technique and skill. Much of this is focused at the intermediate levels. The teacher must select materials which will provide for adequate growth in technique and musicianship. These materials must allow for he students' learning problems as well as the teaching situations encountered.

A Study Of Auditory Discrimination In Lower Elementary Children, Gloria Joan Bahr Jan 1965

A Study Of Auditory Discrimination In Lower Elementary Children, Gloria Joan Bahr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Verbal communication, i.e., speech, is the only unequivocal "human" trait. It is a process of several dimensions which has been the object of many investigations. Auditory discrimination seems to be an essential element in the process of verbal communication and has received much attention, both in the area of normal speech and in speech pathology. Van Riper has suggested that auditory discrimination is both a goal and a technique in speech retraining. He believes that a child with a sound substitution may be unaware that any substitution has occurred. Because the auditory sensations of the correct and incorrect sound may …

A Study Of The Vocal Music Preferences And Interests Of 116 Junior High School Boys In Two Semi-Rural Iowa Communities, Willa Ruth Hunter Jan 1965

A Study Of The Vocal Music Preferences And Interests Of 116 Junior High School Boys In Two Semi-Rural Iowa Communities, Willa Ruth Hunter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Vocal music activities at the junior high school level are of significant importance in the creative and personal development of the adolescent. During these junior high school years a boy quite often goes through the greatest vocal crisis of his musical life. The physical problem of his changing voice coupled with adolescent fluctuations of interests and moods has discouraged many a boy from becoming a musically interested man. In order to retain and train the adolescent voice for future personal enjoyment, the interest and participation of the junior high school boy in choral activities must be maintained. The use of …

Floral Vasculature As A Potential Taxonomic Character In Dalea (Leguminosae), Eugene R. Brady, Don K. Wemple, Nels R. Lersten Jan 1965

Floral Vasculature As A Potential Taxonomic Character In Dalea (Leguminosae), Eugene R. Brady, Don K. Wemple, Nels R. Lersten

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Flowers from 15 species of the genus Dalea (Leguminosae) were cleared and stained. Complete isolation of the xylem of the gynoecium, androecium and corolla from the pedicel xylem was found except in two species. The most obvious feature was the "discontinuity plate" formed by the merger of the xylem of the gynoecial traces in a characteristic mass of tracheoidal cells near the base of the flower. Variation in the floral vascular pattern appears to have taxonomic implications.

Phase Contrast And Electron Microscopic Studies Of Nuclei Of Myxomycete Plasmodia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Linda Ruch Jan 1965

Phase Contrast And Electron Microscopic Studies Of Nuclei Of Myxomycete Plasmodia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Linda Ruch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Phase contrast and electron microscopic studies of the plasmodia of the phaneroplasmodium, aphanoplasmodium, and protoplasmodium types showed the presence of the usual organelles found in the cytoplasm of cells of higher organisms. Mitochondria are of the tubular type, there are both smooth and rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi membranes, vesicles and vacuoles of various types. Fibrils and filaments were seen in the cytoplasm, and there is a cell membrane of the usual type. Ribosomes and polysomes are seen in the ground plasm. No evidence of a centriole was ever seen.

Changes In The Aquatic Vascular Flora Of Lake East Okoboji In Historic Times, Roger Volker, S. Galen Smith Jan 1965

Changes In The Aquatic Vascular Flora Of Lake East Okoboji In Historic Times, Roger Volker, S. Galen Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The submerged, floating, and emergent vascular flora of Lake East Okoboji, Dickenson County, Iowa, was surveyed by the senior author in the summer of 1961, with collections made at 21 stations. Emergent species and one hybrid, and 7 submerged or floating species were found. A comparison is made with a 1915 survey in which a very rich flora of about 18 emergents and 26 submerged or floating species was reported. Pollution by sewage and by agricultural fertilizers and other factors that may have caused changes in the vascular flora are discussed.

Distribution Patterns Of Eastern Red-Cedar Juniperus Virginiana L. In Henry County, Iowa, Dolores Irma Graf, Roger Q. Landers, R. William Poulter Jan 1965

Distribution Patterns Of Eastern Red-Cedar Juniperus Virginiana L. In Henry County, Iowa, Dolores Irma Graf, Roger Q. Landers, R. William Poulter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The distribution patterns of Eastern red-cedar were studied in Henry County, Iowa, in a general survey and also in three intensive study areas in Marion, Jackson, and Wayne townships. It was found that the abundant seed sources of red-cedar and the predominantly rolling land in Henry County make extensive establishment of red-cedars possible. In the northern tier of townships red-cedars are restricted to fence lines and roadsides whereas in the hilly southern three tiers of townships they are much more abundant.

Formation Constants Of The Copper(Ii) Compounds Of Pyridylalpyridylhydrazine, L. Keith Hunt, Harvey Diehl Jan 1965

Formation Constants Of The Copper(Ii) Compounds Of Pyridylalpyridylhydrazine, L. Keith Hunt, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bivalent copper and the Schiff's base pyridylalpydidylhydrazine form two compounds, composed respectively of one molecule and of two molecules of the organic compound to one atom of copper, and having ultra violet absorption spectra differing only in the value of the molar extinction coefficients at the absorption maxima, 15,100 and 22,450, respectively at 345 mμ. The respective formation constants are 2.4 x 105 and 2.8 x 105 as determined from spectrophotometric data, the method used being unusual in that the ultra violet absorption data provided a direct measure of the free ligand present.

Can Chromatography Occur In Nature?, Paul J. Kemp, Harvey Diehl Jan 1965

Can Chromatography Occur In Nature?, Paul J. Kemp, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Adsorption of calcium and magnesium on a sandstone from a bicarbonate solution has been demonstrated. On elution with water saturated with carbon dioxide, the magnesium passes off first. The chromatographic separation of magnesium from calcium can thus occur under conditions which can prevail in nature.

Comparison Between Some Simple Computer-Calculated And Experimental Ion Exchange Elutions, Edward H. Ward, Larry G. Mcrae, Russell W. Maatman Jan 1965

Comparison Between Some Simple Computer-Calculated And Experimental Ion Exchange Elutions, Edward H. Ward, Larry G. Mcrae, Russell W. Maatman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A method for calculating the elution curves for certain ion exchange columns is given. Equilibrium is assumed to be achieved in theoretical plates of finite height. Predicted and experimental elutions agree where it is possible to circumvent non-equilibrium factors by use of the plate concept. Methods are given for elutions both where there is and where there is not co-ion reaction with counter-ion. The mathematical solutions are lengthy because approximations are avoided, necessitating the use of a high-speed computer. Comparisons with experimental results, using Amberlite CG-120 columns, are given for band elution of Na+ by HNO3 elution by …

Life History Of The Northern Common Shiner, Notropis Cornutus Frontalis, In Boone County, Lowa, Everett Fee Jan 1965

Life History Of The Northern Common Shiner, Notropis Cornutus Frontalis, In Boone County, Lowa, Everett Fee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The northern common shiner, Notropis cornutus frontalis, was omnivorous in its feeding, but the type of food utilized was greatly influenced by water levels. Reproduction was later in Squaw Creek than in the Des Moines River. Males had consistently higher condition factors than females. Fish grew faster in Squaw Creek than in the Des Moines River but failed to reach the length of the Des Moines River fish in their first year because of a later spawning period. Myxosporidians, nematodes, tapeworms, and copepods parasitized this species.

Spring Wood Duck Population Of Mississippi River Pool 10, Dale Hein Jan 1965

Spring Wood Duck Population Of Mississippi River Pool 10, Dale Hein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The wood duck (Aix sponsa L.) populations of Mississippi River Pool 10 were studied during the springs of 1960-1964. The major nesting areas were found along the lower 3 miles of tributary valleys and on oak-covered bluffs. Only 35% of the pairs associated with Pool 10 nested in the 50 square miles of bottomlands. Distribution of pairs among habitat types was similar for 480 pairs in 1962 as was true for 530 pairs in 1963. Morning and evening flight counts and pair counts on sample transects were used to estimate numbers. Migration, sex ratios, nesting activities, local movements and …

Some Chemical Characteristics Of Iowa Lakes And Reservoirs, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1965

Some Chemical Characteristics Of Iowa Lakes And Reservoirs, Roger W. Bachmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Chemical analyses were made of the surface waters of 61 Iowa lakes and reservoirs during the summer of 1964. With the exception of one bog lake, they all had typical hard waters of the bicarbonate type. Their average composition was similar to the 10-year average compositions of the Iowa and Cedar rivers. There was a tendency for the lakes lying within the Wisconsin glacial drift sheet to have higher values for all parameters measured, although the differences were not considered biologically significant.
