Geologic Interpretation Of Magnetic Map, Keokuk County, Iowa, D. H. Hase Jan 1965

Geologic Interpretation Of Magnetic Map, Keokuk County, Iowa, D. H. Hase

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1964, surface measurements of the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field were made in Keokuk County, Iowa. The geologic conditions responsible for the magnetic anomalies can be attributed almost entirely to changes in the lithology of the Precambrian crystalline basement complex about which no direct information is available. The basement complex probably includes granitic, basic igneous and/or metavolcanic rocks, and the estimated depth to the top of the complex is about 3,000 feet. There is little correlation between the magnetic anomalies and known Paleozoic structures, but knowledge of the structures is very limited.

Factors Affecting Winter Fish Kills In The Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Donald B. Mcdonald, Robert D. Schmickle Jan 1965

Factors Affecting Winter Fish Kills In The Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Donald B. Mcdonald, Robert D. Schmickle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Coralville Reservoir, located on the Iowa River just upstream from Iowa City, has as its primary purpose the control of floods on the rivers downstream. A conservation pool is maintained for recreational purposes. During December 1964 and January 1965, a combination of rather unusual circumstances caused an almost complete depletion of oxygen in the reservoir and resulted in a fish kill. Oxygen demand of the incoming water from a sudden winter rain greatly exceeded the available oxygen dissolved in the lake. A heavy ice cover prevented the renewal of oxygen by wind action. The depletion continued until warm rains, …

The Effect Of Family Size, Sex Of Siblings And Ordinal Position On Personality Characteristics, Brian Kruger, W.G. Fruehling Jan 1965

The Effect Of Family Size, Sex Of Siblings And Ordinal Position On Personality Characteristics, Brian Kruger, W.G. Fruehling

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was designed to analyze data available at Wartburg College with respect to the effects of family variables upon MMPI scores with the purpose of suggesting hypotheses which may be tested in future investigations. The subjects were Wartburg College freshmen entering in the fall of the school years 1963 and 1964. A 5% coefficient of risk was adopted. AxB factorial designs were employed in the analysis of the data. No significant results were obtained for the female subjects on any of the MMPI scales. Four hypotheses were indicated: (a) Males from large families tend to be more introverted than …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A life history and ecology study of the western blacknose dace, Rhinichthys atratulus meleagris (Agassiz), was made on Elkhorn and Pease creeks, Boone County, Iowa. Total length equals 1.23 standard length; live length equals 1.03 preserved length; and live weight equals 0.90 preserved weight. Dace reached maturity at age II. Spawning occurred from early May through July over gravel. Number of eggs increased with length of females. Scale formation proceeded forward from the caudal peduncle at 16-20 mm standard length. Scale growth was not directly proportional to body growth. Annuli formed between March and May. Fish which lacked scales until …

River Terraces Of The Middle Humber River, Ontario, Michael C. Roberts Jan 1965

River Terraces Of The Middle Humber River, Ontario, Michael C. Roberts

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The terraces of the river valleys in southern Ontario provide one way of establishing at least part of the denudation chronology of the region. The paper reports the findings of an investigation centered on the Middle Humber Basin. (The Humber River is located west and north of the city of Toronto.) Two areas, within the basin, were studied extensively-the Kleinburg-Elder Mills area and the Woodbridge area. A threefold terrace sequence was established. When evidence for the causation of the terraces was collected, alternation in lake level was found to be the key factor. Three lake levels were found: 525 foot, …

The Effects Of The Alaskan Earthquake Of March 27, 1964, On Ground Water In Lowa, Ronald W. Coble Jan 1965

The Effects Of The Alaskan Earthquake Of March 27, 1964, On Ground Water In Lowa, Ronald W. Coble

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The large Alaskan earthquake of March 27, 1964, affected all the major aquifers in Iowa. The effects included (1) seismic fluctuations of the water level; (2) turbid water; and (3) a permanent change in some water levels. A change in the porosity of the aquifers is postulated as an explanation for the permanent water-level changes.

Determining The Relative Shear Behavior Of Coarse Concrete Aggregate And Associated Matrix, Paul J. Kemp, James H. Elwell Jan 1965

Determining The Relative Shear Behavior Of Coarse Concrete Aggregate And Associated Matrix, Paul J. Kemp, James H. Elwell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of the bond characteristics of carbonate aggregates was made by applying shear stresses to 1/8-inch thick slices of highway concrete. It was found that aggregates can be classified as strong, indeterminate, and weak relative to the matrix of the concrete, when accurate lithological cataloging of the aggregates from the source quarry section is made prior to the shear study. Definite classification can only be made in older concretes (7-15 years in age) since newer concretes tend to fail in the aggregate-matrix bond zone, making it difficult to observe the relative aggregate strength. The method provides a basis for …

Paired-Associates Learning Of Random Shapes And Concrete Nouns Of Two Levels Of Descriptive Appropriateness, Mary J. Catherine Leonard, Don Lewis Jan 1965

Paired-Associates Learning Of Random Shapes And Concrete Nouns Of Two Levels Of Descriptive Appropriateness, Mary J. Catherine Leonard, Don Lewis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty college students learned a 12-item list of paired-associates with random shapes as stimuli and concrete nouns as responses. The nouns had been rated high, medium, and low in descriptive appropriateness (da). The pairs were presented either black on white, or white on black, with half the Ss assigned to each condition. Learning was significantly faster for pairs containing nouns with high da values and for the black on white mode of presentation.

The Histological Effects Of Tapazole On Rat Thyroids, Hearts, And Adrenals, Wade L. Collier Jan 1965

The Histological Effects Of Tapazole On Rat Thyroids, Hearts, And Adrenals, Wade L. Collier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The anti-thyroid drug Tapazole, when fed to white rats at the dietary level of 0.1% Tapazole in finely ground laboratory meal, produces changes in body weight, thyroid weight and in the histological composition of the thyroid. Histological examination shows that the affected thyroids have undergone hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Tapazole does not seem to affect rat hearts or adrenals.

A Pilot Study Of The Thymus Of Propylthiouracil-Treated Rats, Maybelle G. Conklin Jan 1965

A Pilot Study Of The Thymus Of Propylthiouracil-Treated Rats, Maybelle G. Conklin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of the effects of propylthiouracil on the rat thymus showed histological changes in that tissue. The overall weight of the thymus tissue was reduced in comparison to the thymus weight of the control group. Histologically the thymus of the PTU group showed decreased width in the cortex with fewer lymphocytes and thymic corpuscles in the medullary portion. There appeared to be an intermediate area between the cortex and medulla rather than the distinct demarcation seen between the cortex and medulla of the normal rat thymus. The results observed in these tissues may indicate a retardation in the maturation …

The Antagonistic Effect Of Strontium Ions For Anesthetization Of Paramecium Caudatum With Nickel Lons, Clair G. Rausch Jan 1965

The Antagonistic Effect Of Strontium Ions For Anesthetization Of Paramecium Caudatum With Nickel Lons, Clair G. Rausch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this investigation was (1) to compute the effects of strontium ion antagonism and the observed biological effect of the strontium ion for anestesia of Paramecium caudatum with the nickel ion, (2) to compare the prolonged effect of the strontium ion antagonism for nickel ions upon the vitality of P. caudatum for control groups using the fission rate as an index of vitality. The experimental data showed a biological antagonism of the strontium ions for the nickel ions in anesthetization of P. caudatum. Further, the vitality study showed that the presence of strontium ions reduced the inhibitory effect …

An Analysis Of Abnormal Development In The Cnbw-16 Stock Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Phillip J. Reitan Jan 1965

An Analysis Of Abnormal Development In The Cnbw-16 Stock Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Phillip J. Reitan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Developmental abnormalities in the embryonic period resulting from cobalt-60 induced mutations in Drosophila melanogaster are discussed. Embryos of 16 hours of development were studied. Among 32 abnormal embryos found in 52 eggs in this stock (Cnbw-16), eight having a consistent pattern of abnormality were studied. These embryos, designated as Cnbw-16, type a, all show a failure of embryonic shortening and midgut development. Associated abnormalities permit interpretation concerning the nature of normal development in three areas: (1) nerve cord condensation, (2) embryonic shortening, and (3) muscle fiber differentiation. Nerve cord condensation is partial in the absence of embryonic shortening. This indicates …

An Investigation Of College Success Of Odebolt-Arthur High School Graduates, Odebolt, Iowa, Donna Yvonne Hunter Jan 1965

An Investigation Of College Success Of Odebolt-Arthur High School Graduates, Odebolt, Iowa, Donna Yvonne Hunter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Throughout the nat1on there is a rapid increase in college and university enrollments. With this ever-increasing enrollment high school students find it necessary to make earlier decisions concerning their future. Such decisions usually bring forth the question, "Will I be able to succeed in college?" Such a question places much responsibility upon the high school counselor to provide students, as well as parents, with objective information concerning this transition from high school to college. Therefore, high school counselors are in need of more valid methods of making recommendations as to possible success in colleges and universities.

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates Jan 1965

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Today, as perhaps at no time previously, the English department of the American high school has come in for scrutiny and alteration. The most recent convention of Iowa English teachers (April, 1965) found new programs in literature to be "exciting," new approaches to writing "exciting," new developments in advanced classes "exciting". Innovation and renovation are a part of the scene. As many English teachers are beginning to learn, changes in curriculum and in text materials and in approach to the subject are coming so rapidly that no one has had time to assess the changes or to draw any concrete …

A Study Of The Development Of The Wochenlied Plan With Reasons For Its Decline During The Eighteenth Century, David Paul Held Jan 1965

A Study Of The Development Of The Wochenlied Plan With Reasons For Its Decline During The Eighteenth Century, David Paul Held

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Wochenlied, also known as the "Hymn of the Week" or the "de tempore hymn," was a product of the Reformation. Its inception was found in the attitude of Martin Luther toward congregational singing, his resulting emphasis upon the chorale as the vehicle for such singing, and his liturgical reforms. The Wochenlied plan became an integral part of Lutheran worship practice in Germany during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its growth was fostered during the first one hundred years following the Reformation during which a favorable liturgical, musical, and educational climate for the development of this hymn plan was present. …

The Utilization Of A Personality Rating Scale To Determine The Relationship Between Peers, Faculty, And Self-Ratings, George Carroll Cordes Jan 1965

The Utilization Of A Personality Rating Scale To Determine The Relationship Between Peers, Faculty, And Self-Ratings, George Carroll Cordes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was an attempt to investigate the student's evaluation of himself, as compared with others' evaluation of him. A personality rating scale in the hands of a competent counselor may be of real value. This study provided an opportunity to compare a self-analysis and a peer analysis, giving the counselor some additional data on the ability of the student to know himself.

Paper Chromatography Of Proteins And Amino Acids Of Pandorina And Morphologically Distinct Forms Of Eudorina, Margaret Dean Davis Jan 1965

Paper Chromatography Of Proteins And Amino Acids Of Pandorina And Morphologically Distinct Forms Of Eudorina, Margaret Dean Davis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Preliminary observations of Eudorina cultures verified the presence of morphologically distinct forms of these colonial flagellates. Colonies were observed which contained fewer than the sixteen, thirty-two or sixty-four cells given as the definitive taxonomic characteristic of Eudorina. Some of these colonies were more compactly arranged with a reduction in the amount of inter-cellular matrix present. It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine whether differences could be detected in the biochemical composition of small compact Eudorina species and of Pandorina species and (2) to determine whether biochemical differences could be detected between the small and the larger forms …

The field of practical nursing has grown considerably in the past ten years. To meet the challenge of growth, schools of practical nursing must be constantly aware of the changing needs of the many institutions their graduates may serve. In order to insure that graduates maintain their effectiveness as an established member of the nursing team, the schools must engage in continuous research to keep their curriculums meaningful and updated.

A Report On A Creative Thesis Project Concerning The Making Of A Film As A Personal Analogy Of Pottery And Natural Environment, Edwin H. Harris Jan 1965

A Report On A Creative Thesis Project Concerning The Making Of A Film As A Personal Analogy Of Pottery And Natural Environment, Edwin H. Harris

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As long as I can remember, I have thought in mental images rather than in abstract ideas. My mind seems to translate sensations to visual mental images that are seen as either vague, colored shapes or as clearly defined forms related visually to a particular sight, sound, feeling, smell, or taste. When stimulated by the senses, the images appear in rapid succession, sometimes without apparent logical order; they may come and go with varying intensity or may present themselves singly or in groups. These images are always present while I am concious [sic]; they are unlike my dreams which move …

Spawning Periodicity Of The River Carpsucker, Carpiodes Carpio, David J. Behmer Dec 1964

Spawning Periodicity Of The River Carpsucker, Carpiodes Carpio, David J. Behmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The sex ratio of river carpsuckers collected from the Des Moines River differed significantly from 1:1, females being most abundant. Spawning had already begun in early June and some fish were found ripe as late as August. No carpsuckers younger than age IV were found mature. All ripening carpsucker ovaries contained a group of eggs that seemed to be degenerating. It is not certain if carpsuckers spawn more than once in a season.
