Phase Contrast And Electron Microscopic Observations On Membranous Organelles In Myxomycete Plasmodia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Karen Beall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nuclei of the vegetative body of Stemonitis fusca have a nuclear membrane that is double and has pores and annuli. The nucleoplasm contains numerous chromocenters and a nucleolus that is without a limiting membrane and has the appearance of a nucleolonema. What appeared to be extensions of the nuclear membrane were often seen within the nucleoplasm, and structures resembling annulate lamellae were found near the outside of nuclei and elsewhere in the cytoplasm. Large blebs were sometimes seen extending outward from the nuclear membrane, and vesicles in the neighboring cytoplasm contained material identical in appearance with the contents of the …

Microbiological Studies On The Vitamin B6 Antagonist Found In Flaxseed, John L. Tjostem Jan 1965

Microbiological Studies On The Vitamin B6 Antagonist Found In Flaxseed, John L. Tjostem

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Extensive investigations were conducted on the development of a microbiological assay of a vitamin B6 antagonist found in flaxseed. It is the only known naturally occurring inhibitor of vitamin B6. By means of a screening procedure, ten microorganisms were found to be inhibited by preparations of the B6 antagonist. One of these, Bacillus polymyxa, was investigated more fully. Correlations of the B. polymyxa and live chick assays were excellent. All column chromatographic fractions of inhibitor which reduced Tollen's reagent inhibited B. polymyxa. Vitamin B6 does not competitively reverse the bacterial inhibition. Inhibition of B. polymyxa …

Determination Of Perchlorate Ion With Tetraphenylarsonium Chloride, John E. Going, Ronald T. Pflaum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A detailed study of precipitation reaction of perchlorate ion with tetraphenylarsonium chloride is reported. Optimum conditions for quantitative precipitation of perchlorate ion were determined. A gravimetric and a spectrophotometric method for perchlorate ion are proposed. The spectrophotometric method is based upon dissolution of (C6H5)4AsClO4 in acetonitrile and subsequent measurement of absorbance at 264 mμ. Results on selected samples prove both methods to be accurate and reproducible.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The dependence of the maximal velocity, Vm with pH for barley malt phosphatase has been studied from pH 4.0 to 5.4. The data show that an ionizable group in the enzyme-substrate complex with a pK2 of 4-4.6 is important for enzymic activity. These results suggest strongly the involvement of a carboxyl group of a glutamic or aspartic acid residue at the active site of this enzyme.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reaction kinetics of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene and piperidine in 95 per cent ethanol were determined by a Kohlrausch conductometric technique. A 1000 cps audiofrequency oscillator was used with both headphones and oscilloscope employed as null-point detectors. Three temperatures and concentrations were used with average specific rate constants of 0.3188, 1.744, and 4.423 liters mole-1 minute-1 at 0.2°C, 25°C, and 40°C respectively. The change in entropy was -21.84 cal. deg.-1 mole-1 and the activitation energy was 10.58 Kcal.

Tree Succession In Pine Hollow State Forest And Its Implications, Edward T. Cawley Jan 1965

Tree Succession In Pine Hollow State Forest And Its Implications, Edward T. Cawley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana are replacing Pinus strobus and Quercus alba on the upland ridges of Pine Hollow State Forest Preserve. Any further detailed studies of the history of the pine in the preserve require not only the preservation of the pine-dominated stands but all upland stands. Since some of these are being logged within the preserve, future management should be changed to insure the protection of all the plants in the preserve. This can only be accomplished by formal legal dedication of the area as a preserve.

Pheasant Farms In Lowa, David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1965

Pheasant Farms In Lowa, David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An investigation of privately owned pheasant farms in Iowa was conducted from 1960 to 1963. The objectives of the study were to locate all pheasant farms in the state and to study the distribution, size, annual production and years of operation of these farms. The majority of pheasant breeding operations were located in the southern half of Iowa. A total of 254 individuals reared pheasants during the study, but only 31 pheasant farms operated continuously from 1960 to 1963. The average number of farms per year was 119. A total of 84,943 pheasants was produced during the study. Large pheasant …

Status And Management Of The White-Tailed Deer In Iowa, 1954-1962, Paul D. Kline Jan 1965

Status And Management Of The White-Tailed Deer In Iowa, 1954-1962, Paul D. Kline

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Data regarding populations, hunting, harvest, and biology of Iowa deer (Odocoileus virginianus) gathered by the State Conservation Commission is presented from four ecologically distinct areas. Following 10 consecutive hunting seasons, deer are more abundant and better distributed than before. Abundance through the state is not consistent with available forest habitat. Separate seasons have been permitted for deer of any sex or age by shotgunners and archers on a statewide basis most years. Harvests during recent years have averaged near 20% of an increasing population. Hunting success for gunners during 3-day seasons has been near 45-50%. Bucks outnumber does in …

Comparative Growth Of Four Species Of Fish In Three Different Types Of Iowa Artificial Lakes, James Mayhew Jan 1965

Comparative Growth Of Four Species Of Fish In Three Different Types Of Iowa Artificial Lakes, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Growth of four species of fish are compared in three different types of Iowa artificial lakes and reservoirs. The lakes were classified by similarity of physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Scale samples and total length measurements were obtained from 14,705 fish at 71 impoundments. Largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, and white crappie growth was greatest in Group I lakes. Factors influencing differences in growth rate in the three types of impoundments are discussed.

Comparative Age And Growth Of Channel Catfish From Some Eastern Iowa Rivers, Roger Schoumacher, Gary Ackerman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During 1963 and 1964, catfish populations were sampled in various rivers in eastern Iowa, and 1,391 spines were collected and analyzed for age. Growth rates varied considerably, with fish from the Wapsipinicon River at Anamosa being the slowest growing, followed by fish from the Wapsipinicon River at Independence, the Cedar River at Gilbertville and Cedar Rapids, and the Iowa River at Marshalltown. Faster growth was exhibited by fish from two renovated areas -the Iowa River in the Iowa Falls-Steamboat Rock area and Fontana Mill Lake-, from the lower 8 miles of the Skunk River, and from various pools in the …

Detailed Mapping Of The Bedrock Configuration In Des Moines County, Iowa, With An Electrical Resistivity Instrument, Lyle V. A. Sendlein Jan 1965

Detailed Mapping Of The Bedrock Configuration In Des Moines County, Iowa, With An Electrical Resistivity Instrument, Lyle V. A. Sendlein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A Gish-Rooney type earth resistivity apparatus was used to obtain depth to bedrock at 110 instrument locations in north-central Des Moines County, Iowa. The variable depth method was employed in an area where some bore hole information was already available. The features on the resultant bedrock configuration map are more clearly defined than those on a map produced from bore hole data only. The resultant map is considered to be more reliable. The reliability of the method depends on the geologic conditions and the amount of data available prior to the study.

Assessing The Connotative Strengths Of Random Shapes, Don Lewis, Joanna B. Boehnert Jan 1965

Assessing The Connotative Strengths Of Random Shapes, Don Lewis, Joanna B. Boehnert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

After sets of mutually equally discriminable random shapes, all generated from a single prototype, had been identified, the members of the several sets were immediately recognized as differing in associativeness or meaningfulness. The meaningfulness (m) of each shape was determined through an application of the production method. The computed values of m did not, in many cases, coincide with the meaningfulness of the shapes as judged by several trained observers. Satisfactory indices of the heterogeneity (and, conversely, the homogeneity) of the verbal responses to each of the shapes seemed impossible to obtain. Thereupon, the degree of appropriateness of each …

Sequential Effects Of Contingent And Non-Contingent Punishment, D. R. Brown, N. D. Kent Jan 1965

Sequential Effects Of Contingent And Non-Contingent Punishment, D. R. Brown, N. D. Kent

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hooded rats were given extensive training on a VI 60" schedule until their response rate stabilized. Subsequently a punishment routine was initiated concurrently with the VI 60" for nineteen one hour sessions. While this routine was in effect, half of the Ss were administered a brief shock whenever they bar pressed; the other half served as tandem controls so the shocks which they received were not correlated with bar pressing. Two levels of shock intensity were employed: .2 and .4 ma. Behavior was suppressed in both treatment groups though to a much greater extent in the contingent group. Variations in …

New Directions In Earth Science In Iowa Schools, Silas W. Schirner Jan 1965

New Directions In Earth Science In Iowa Schools, Silas W. Schirner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Earth science was a common part of the high school curricula fifty years ago. It dropped from about 30% to.4% of the total school enrollment from 1900 to 1949. The decline of earth science was paralleled by an increased offering of biology. In the modern high school curricula it is replacing general science, mostly at the ninth grade level. Earth science offerings are on the increase in Iowa from 7 districts in 1960 to 53 in 1965, an increase of 757%, which is roughly 10% of the schools. Other schools have plans for the adoption of an earth science course …

Experimental Studies On The Dispersal Of The Frog, Rana Pipiens, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1965

Experimental Studies On The Dispersal Of The Frog, Rana Pipiens, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Massive emigrations of the frog Rana pipiens pipiens Schreber have been recorded from large sloughs in northwestern Iowa. To investigate the possible ecological causes for this movement, two sets of laboratory experiments were done. A simulated slough was constructed in a large concrete tank and stocked with vegetation and a population of maturing tadpoles. As the time came for the emigration in the field, the experimental population, under the regulated laboratory conditions, had matured and emigrated in a way parallel to the natural situation. In other experiments, emigrations were determined for populations of juvenile frogs, one of which was five …

Larval Development Of Four Caryophyllaeid Cestodes, Robert L. Calentine

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Adults of the caryophyllaeid cestodes Glaridacris catostomi, Hunterella nodulosa, Monobothrium hunteri and Monobothrium ingens were recovered from naturally infected fishes. The oligochaete annelid intermediate hosts were experimentally infected with embryonated eggs of these cestodes. Fully developed procercoids were characterized by a scolex similar to that of the adult, also by a cercomer and primordia of reproductive organs.

The Effects Of Isometric Contractions On Breathing And Pulse Rates In The Performance Of A Modified Harvard Step Test, Wallace A. Swan, Kenneth M. Cook Jan 1965

The Effects Of Isometric Contractions On Breathing And Pulse Rates In The Performance Of A Modified Harvard Step Test, Wallace A. Swan, Kenneth M. Cook

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The degree of fitness as ascertained by performance of a modified Harvard Step Test did not increase over controls for isometrically trained individuals. However, improvement over a prior training period was apparent. The breathing rate is probably a satisfactory index of measurement for the Harvard Step Test but needs further elucidation.

Effects Of Estradiol Hormone On The Maturation Of The Gonads And Associated Duct System Of The Fish Lebistes Reticulatus, Michael Thomas Story

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was the purpose of this study to describe the secondary sex characters and the histological appearance of the gonads, including the associated duct system, of the fish Lebistes reticulatus from birth through differentiation and maturation when subjected to the hormone estradiol. Sixty-four Lebistes reticulatus were fed 0.125 mg of estradiol, beginning at birth, at intervals of 60 hours. An equal number of fish were used as the control. Fish were sacrificed at ten-day intervals following birth, for a period of 80 days, and examined for the presence of secondary sex characters. Serial cross sections of the gonads were prepared …

Caryophyllaeid Cestodes From Two Species Of Redhorse (Moxostoma), Leigh H. Fredrickson, Martin J. Ulmer Jan 1965

Caryophyllaeid Cestodes From Two Species Of Redhorse (Moxostoma), Leigh H. Fredrickson, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two caryophyllaeid tapeworms, lsoglaridacris longus sp. n., and I. folius sp. n., are described from two species of redhorse, namely, Moxostoma macolepidotum and M. erythrurum, respectively. Members of the genus lsoglaridacris appear to be host specific, since the two species mentioned in this study occur in different fish hosts collected from the same rivers.

Both I. longus and I. folius appear to exhibit seasonal periodicity, the smallest populations occurring in late summer. Their presence or absence in fish during the winter months, however, is unknown. Infected fish usually harbor a small number of cestodes, generally only a single worm. The …

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann Jan 1965

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The antithyroid drug, Tapazole (methamazole, or imidazole-2-thio, 1-methyl), when fed to female rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % had a slight effect on the average number of young and weight per litter if administered during the preconception period. If given during the gestation period the results were harmful. Tapazole treatment of mothers during lactation resulted in lethargic cretin-like young, although survival rates during lactation and after weaning were good.

Radioisotope Distribution In Visceral Organs Of White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Denzil J. Hawes-Davis, Sam Mcclugage, Steve Livesey Jan 1965

Radioisotope Distribution In Visceral Organs Of White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Denzil J. Hawes-Davis, Sam Mcclugage, Steve Livesey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

White mice, previously medicated over a three week period with reserpine, thyroxine, ascorbic acid and streptomycin were given 0.3 Microcurie or radioactive phosphorus³² by intramuscular injection. After 24 hours the mice were sacrificed, ten organs removed, and the amount of radioactivity retained was recorded in counts per minute per gram. Results showed males retained more of the isotope than females in all organs except gonads and brain. Liver, intestine, and kidney retained more of the isotope than other organs with each medication. With the reserpine medicated animals there was less radioactivity retained by ten organs. The control group had the …

A Quantitative Study Of The Dna And Rna In The Livers Of Albino Mice During The Estrus Cycle, Allan F. Wolfe Jan 1965

A Quantitative Study Of The Dna And Rna In The Livers Of Albino Mice During The Estrus Cycle, Allan F. Wolfe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several investigators have suggested that the nucleic acid content of mouse liver varied with the estrus cycle. Nucleic acids were extracted with trichloroacetic acid and ethanol. The quantity of DNA and RNA was determined with a spectrophotometer. No significant differences were observed in the quantity of DNA or RNA throughout the estrus cycle. Diversity in the amount of nucleic acids present among the livers of non-litter mates was one-third greater that that among litter mates. In studies of the nucleio acid content of mouse liver, little is gained by controlling the estrus cycle, but using litter mates is suggested to …
