Pyridine Thioamides As Analytical Reagents For Lron, Ronald T. Pflaum, Gerald F. Brunzie, Lawrence E. Cook Jan 1965

Pyridine Thioamides As Analytical Reagents For Lron, Ronald T. Pflaum, Gerald F. Brunzie, Lawrence E. Cook

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thiopicolinamide and pyridine-2, 6-dithioamide were investigated as spectrophotometric reagents for iron. Both reagents form soluble blue colored species with iron (II) ion in basic solutions. The tris-thiopicolfuarnide-iron (II) complex exhibits a wavelength of maximum absorption at 615 mμ with a molar absorptivity of 13,600. The bispyridine-2, 6-dithioarnide-iron (II) complex exhibits a wavelength of maximum absorption at 600 mμ with a molar absorptivity of 21,000. A sensitive method for the determination of iron based upon the latter complex is proposed.

Vertebrate Coactions With The Franklin Ground Squirrel, Emmett Polder Jan 1965

Vertebrate Coactions With The Franklin Ground Squirrel, Emmett Polder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nearly 30 years of observation of Franklin ground squirrels in central and northeast Iowa indicates that they are of minor importance as prey for carnivorous birds, mammals, and reptiles. These ground squirrels are predators of some significance on eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and the helpless young of some small mammals. The Franklin squirrel burrows are of considerable importance as dens for long-tailed weasels and spotted skunks and are of seasonal value as retreats for young opossums, striped skunks, and mink during mid-summer dispersal. Amphibia use the dens as a moist daytime refuge during hot, dry weather and garter …

Specific Antibodies For Mycoplasma In Pheasants On Game Farms In Lowa, Steven Palmer, David J. Roslien

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Serums from 838 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) reared on 28 Iowa game farms were tested for Mycoplasma gallisepticum specific antibodies. Two hundred serums reacted with tube agglutination antigen, but only eight were confirmed with the hemagglutination-inhibition test.

Psychological Scaling Of Language Development Of Children, Dorothy Sherman, Thomas Shriner, Franklin Silverman Jan 1965

Psychological Scaling Of Language Development Of Children, Dorothy Sherman, Thomas Shriner, Franklin Silverman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Certain aspects of the use of psychological rating scale methods for measuring degrees of language development in the speech of children are evaluated. That typed samples from children's speech can be scaled reliably is demonstrated. Comparisons are made among correlation coefficients which were obtained for the purpose of estimating relationships among three measures of language development for the same set of 50 samples of children's language: structural complexity scores obtained by analysis of the samples; scale values of intricacy of language usage obtained by the psychological scaling method of Equal-Appearing Intervals; and mean estimates of age derived from sophisticated observers' …

Chromosomes Of The Laboratory Mouse, Margaret L. Watson, Jerry D. Oliver

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The chromosome number of 40 for the laboratory mouse was confirmed. A karyotype of mouse chromosomes was made. The chromosomes can be arranged into four groups based on size and shape.

Improving The Junior High Science Program, Edward M. Chuck

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

An acceptable philosophy for any junior high science program would seem to be one that would help the individual in the solution of those problems which he faces in his daily life. Science teaching, therefore, should be life-centered rather than science-centered.

Teaching Slow Learners In Biology, Mary Placid

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The recurrent question of capacity development for the individual student brings with it the annual problem of helping the slow learner achieve in accordance with his ability. There are primarily five areas of techniques which should be considered when dealing with the slow learner in biology. Application of techniques in these areas will be suggested for groups with I.Q. ranges from approximately 70-85. The areas covered will be: (1) psychology techniques (2) audio techniques (3) visual techniques (4) text requirements (5) laboratory techniques.
