The Postglacial Phytogeography Of The Iowan Lobe, L. J. Eilers Jan 1965

The Postglacial Phytogeography Of The Iowan Lobe, L. J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowan lobe of the Wisconsin glaciation is located in northeastern Iowa. Evidence is summarized which pertains to the migrations of the regional vegetation following the Wisconsin glaciations. The most recent climatic fluctuation to influence the distribution of the present flora was the Hypsithermal interval. The present distributions of several species are discussed in relation to the postglacial history of the flora. Eleven distribution maps of representative species are included. Most of the distribution patterns can be attributed to factors other than continuing postglacial migration. It appears that these plant distributions are primarily a function of the distribution of available …

The Glenwood - Platteville Disconformity, E. Charles Guldenzopf Jan 1965

The Glenwood - Platteville Disconformity, E. Charles Guldenzopf

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Evidence for a disconformity between the Glenwood Member of the St. Peter Formation and the Pecatonica Member of the Platteville Formation is advanced in this report. Physical lines of evidence are the presence of floating St. Peter sand grains and the presence of phosphate grains and pebbles in the basal Pecatonica at several localities in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Faunal evidence for a disconformity consists of the distribution of four conodont genera within these two units. Chirognathus spp. is found in the Glenwood and the basal Pecatonica, but no higher, while the genera Polyplacognathus, Belodina and Eobelodina first appear in …

Value Patterns In Three Midwest Colleges, John R. Tisdale Jan 1965

Value Patterns In Three Midwest Colleges, John R. Tisdale

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Allport, Vernon, Lindzey Study of Values reported norms were compared with scores from a sample from three midwest liberal arts colleges. The total college group consisted of 440 Ss, 183 males and 257 females. The individual samples showed both resemblances to and differences from each other and the appropriate sex norms, when they were examined on the basis of the mean values obtained for each of the test's six variables and of the relative rank assigned to each. The composite group showed differences in amounts rather than ranks on the scales. It was concluded that the appropriateness of the …

Trace Analysis Of Halogens By Neutron Activation, Ralph O. Allen Jr. Jan 1965

Trace Analysis Of Halogens By Neutron Activation, Ralph O. Allen Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A procedure was developed by which trace quantities of chlorine, bromine, iodine, tellurium, and uranium could be quantitatively determined simultaneously in a single meteorite sample. Meteoritic material was irradiated with thermal neutrons. Carrier ions were added, the material was fused with sodium peroxide and the chlorine, bromine, and iodine were isolated. Distillation from a sulfuric acid solution removed the halogens from the bulk of material. After distillation, selective solvent extractions were used to separate and purify each of the halogens. The purified halides were precipitated as the silver halides, weighed, mounted, and counted by β, γ and/or β-γ coincidence counting …

Lithologic Control Of Alkali-Induced Expansion In Carbonate Rock From Decorah, Iowa, James H. Elwell, John Lemish Jan 1965

Lithologic Control Of Alkali-Induced Expansion In Carbonate Rock From Decorah, Iowa, James H. Elwell, John Lemish

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of the overall linear expansion of carbonate rock cores in an alkaline environment was extended to include the distribution of expansion along the length of the core. For the material tested, it was found that the fracture pattern, radial expansion and overall linear expansion were associated with bedding planes and stylolitic seams. The formation of voids and the constant association of iron stains both with pyrite and expansion zones places pyrite under suspicion as an indicator of a type of expansive lithology. The radial expansion distribution provides a basis for separating expansive and non-expansive lengths of core. The …

Sexual Dimorphism In The Dorsal Fins Of Ollentodon And Skiffia, Mexican Goodeid Teleosts, Guillermo Mendoza Jan 1965

Sexual Dimorphism In The Dorsal Fins Of Ollentodon And Skiffia, Mexican Goodeid Teleosts, Guillermo Mendoza

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The dorsal fins of males of Ollentodon multipunctatus, Skifiia lemae and Skifiia variegata differ from the dorsal fins of the females. The first 4-5 rays of the male dorsal fins have a spine-like appearance and are separated from each other by a deep notching at the periphery of the fin membrane. The female fin is undifferentiated. The male dorsal is generally higher and longer at the base than the female fin. Similarly, the rays in the male fin are thicker than those in the female. Whereas most rays in the fin are bifurcated twice to form three or four terminal …

The Development Of Critical Thinking Through Science Instruction, Gerald H. Krockover Jan 1965

The Development Of Critical Thinking Through Science Instruction, Gerald H. Krockover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the major goals in science teaching is to develop critical thinking in each student. After instruction in science, we as science teachers, hope that students have learned to analyze scientific data, to interpret data which will allow them to arrive at reasonable conclusions, and to evaluate approaches to problem solving in science. At Middle School, Bettendorf, Iowa, one of our major goals is to develop the ability of each student to think and analyze problems in relation to his or her ability. To go along with this, each course in science is designed with an attempt to continually …

Fossiliferous Plants Of The Pennsylvanian Period From A Selected Area In Macon County, Missouri, Donald F. Spain Jan 1965

Fossiliferous Plants Of The Pennsylvanian Period From A Selected Area In Macon County, Missouri, Donald F. Spain

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Macro-fossil specimens were collected from eight evenly spaced locations along the face of a one hundred and fifty foot shale exposure. The exposure was located along Sand Creek northeast of Elmer, Missouri, in Macon County. The fossils were all of plant life and consisted mostly of compressions of plant fragments, some plant impressions, mineral replacements, and casts. Specimens of Pecopteris, Neuropteris, Alethopteris, Unidentifiable Fem Types, Miscellaneous Fern Particles; Tangled, Calamites, Sphenophyllum, Sigillaria, Cordaites, Ginkgo, Stigmaria, and two Unknown Carpi were found.

Past Standards Of Industrial Arts Teachers Education In Iowa And The Six States Surrounding Iowa, William R. Reams Jan 1965

Past Standards Of Industrial Arts Teachers Education In Iowa And The Six States Surrounding Iowa, William R. Reams

Graduate Research Papers

It is the purpose of this study to examine the standards of industrial arts teacher education in Iowa and its bordering states. These states are: Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska., South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In looking at the standards data will be collected from the standards set up by the various states. In the outline of the paper the writer stated that information would be obtained from college catalogues in the various states that indicated an industrial arts teacher curriculum. This would give semester hours of industrial arts required by the various colleges to be compared with the state standards given …

The Pyrite And Marcasite Electrodes, David L. Pringle, Harvey Diehl Jan 1965

The Pyrite And Marcasite Electrodes, David L. Pringle, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pyrite and marcasite may be used as the indicating electrode in neutralization reactions. In acid solution the pyrite and marcasite electrodes behave almost identically with the platinum electrode with differences arising (1) in the presence of strong oxidizing agents where the attack on the pyrite and marcasite alters the potential, and (2) long standing where changes result from the dissolution of a little pyrite even under non-oxidizing conditions. Pyrite and marcasite can thus be used as indicator electrodes in oxidation-reduction titrations. A pyrite-platinum pair gives a differential titration curve. In alkaline solution pyrite, marcasite and platinum respond almost identically to …
