Resource Heritage And Conservation Education, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1966

Resource Heritage And Conservation Education, Arnold O. Haugen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Good conservation involves wise use of resources. Consideration must be given to long-time use by people of both this and future generations. In some cases good conservation dictates that we make only limited or no use of a particular resource. Examples of the latter are Iowa's few remnant native prairie areas and relatively undisturbed forest areas. Iowa's resources also include its soils, water, woodlots, wildlife, fishes, and geological, paleontological and historical sites. Availability of Iowa resources for future use will depend on how we manage to use or abuse them today.

A Study Of The Use Of Laboratory Methods To Promote Student Discovery In Tenth-Grade Geometry, Russell Franklin Hein

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years there has been a trend toward the use of discovery methods in the teaching of mathematics. This trend has been especially noticeable in the teaching of geometry since this subject deals with various plane and solid figures which contain many relationships for the students to discover. There has also been increased interest in the use of audio-visual materials for the presentation of geometric topics. This has been particularly evident in the use of models for solid or three-dimensional geometry. The use of such models has not only enabled the students to more readily grasp the desired relationships …

Movement And Homing Of Sunfishes In Clear Lake, Joel J. Kudrna Jan 1965

Movement And Homing Of Sunfishes In Clear Lake, Joel J. Kudrna

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the summer of 1964, pumpkinseeds (Lepomis gibbosus), bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) and green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) were taken by shocking in certain areas of Clear Lake, Iowa, marked with numbered jawtags, and displaced to other neighboring areas. Recaptures indicate that separate populations live in various parts of the lake. Recapture rates for pumpkinseeds and bluegills replaced in their home areas were higher than for those displaced to other areas. No correlation was shown between homing and distance displaced, but distances did not exceed 2200 feet. The larger fish showed a greater homing tendency. Home ranges are apparently maintained …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sarcocystis leporum was found in 42 of 173 (24.3 %) cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsi) examined. Infections were not observed in cottontails less than 6 months old. Incidence rose from zero at age 5 months to 67% at age 12 months. Ninety per cent of cottontails 25-48 months old were infected. The age of individual cottontails was estimated from the eye lens weight.
