The Morphometry Of Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann, Richard V. Bovbjerg, John D. Hall Jan 1966

The Morphometry Of Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann, Richard V. Bovbjerg, John D. Hall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A total of 2901 depth measurements were made in Lake West Okoboji, Dickinson Co., Iowa in the summer of 1962 using a non-recording echo sounder. These were used to construct a morphometric map of the bottom topography. The area of the lake was found to be 1540 Ha., the volume 184 x 10 to the 6th m³, maximum depth 42.7 m, mean depth 11.9 m and length of shoreline 30.0 km. No changes in the morphometry of the lake could be detected since it was last mapped in 1913.

Geology Of The Proposed Skunk River Dam, Lee B. Backsen, Lyle V.A. Sendlein Jan 1966

Geology Of The Proposed Skunk River Dam, Lee B. Backsen, Lyle V.A. Sendlein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Corps of Engineers plan to construct an earth-fill dam approximately three miles north of Ames, Iowa on the Skunk River. The proposed dam site is on a reach of the Skunk River which has been displaced approximately two miles to the southeast. The old channel has been filled and covered by glacial drift and is not detectable at the surface. Compilation of data obtained from geological investigations provides evidence for the existence of a buried valley. It is believed that the sands and gravels in this valley are hydraulically connected to the aquifer from which the City of Ames …

A New Edrioasteroid, H. L. Strimple Jan 1966

A New Edrioasteroid, H. L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two specimens of an edrioasteroid in excellent preservation have been found in the Pella beds, Upper Mississippian, by Amel Priest of Peru, Iowa at an abandoned quarry northeast of Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa. The interior of the theca is exposed in the smaller specimen and the existence of a stone canal is disclosed. The species is described as Discocystis priesti, new species.

An Orthocerid Cephalopod From The Cherokee Group Of Marion County, Iowa, Richard Arnold Davis, Carlyle B. Campbell Jan 1966

An Orthocerid Cephalopod From The Cherokee Group Of Marion County, Iowa, Richard Arnold Davis, Carlyle B. Campbell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Specimens of Pseudorthoceras knoxense (McChesney) occurring in the lower part of the Cherokee Group in Marion County, Iowa, possess body chambers. The shell of these body chambers is distinctly thickened with the thickest portion of the callus on the venter. No reasonably complete peristome is preserved, but growth lines on the body chamber indicate the presence of only a broad, shallow reentrant and a broad, shallow salient.

Observations On Fishery Management In Africa, Kenneth D. Carlander Jan 1966

Observations On Fishery Management In Africa, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fisheries personnel in Liberia, Nigeria, Ghana, Sudan, Uganda and Egypt were visited in March and April 1965. Harvest of fish from the sea, lakes and rivers is being improved through improved boats, motors, and docking marketing facilities. High dams on the Nile and Volta Rivers are providing new fishery resources which will require research and development of new techniques. Flooded vegetation has caused oxygen depletion in the Volta Reservoir. The dams will also interfere with spawning of fish and clams downstream, and the Nile dam has already reduced the catch of sardines in the Mediterranean. Fish culture is hindered by …

A Morphological Study Of Three Iowa Carpsuckers, Richard R. Cornelius Jan 1966

A Morphological Study Of Three Iowa Carpsuckers, Richard R. Cornelius

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Detailed morphological studies were made of 78 specimens of Carpiodes cyprinus, 51 C. velifer, and 104 C. carpio for the purpose of finding additional morphological criteria for identifying these species in the field. The various ratios and counts were highly variable and overlapping and no new criteria were found.

Occurrence Of Waterfowl Along A Proposed Lmpoundment, The Saylorville Reservoir, William H. Schmidt, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1966

Occurrence Of Waterfowl Along A Proposed Lmpoundment, The Saylorville Reservoir, William H. Schmidt, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Waterfowl were studied from early fall 1958 through spring 1959 along selected Des Moines River segments that will be affected by the Saylorville reservoir (now under construction). Periodic counts conducted during fall and spring yielded a total of 1,948 waterfowl (18 species) and 4 coots. During fall three species of geese (410) and five species of puddle ducks (302) were seen. Spring counts indicated 1,186 ducks of 14 species, including diving ducks (8%) and mergansers (11%). Four puddle duck species made up 74% of spring duck populations. Waterfowl per mile data were considered more valuable that waterfowl per hour data …

The Prairie Remnants Of The Ames Area, Robert W. Freckmann Jan 1966

The Prairie Remnants Of The Ames Area, Robert W. Freckmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A list of the vascular plants found on five prairie remnants in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa, was compiled in 1965. The five relics, perhaps the last in the area, support a flora of about 180 native species and at least 32 adventive species. These areas, which include both upland and lowland prairie types, are described in the paper.

Selected Problems In Measuring Extrinsic Religious Values, John R. Tisdale, Larry Walrath Jan 1966

Selected Problems In Measuring Extrinsic Religious Values, John R. Tisdale, Larry Walrath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study deals with problems which have arisen in attempts to measure Allport's construct, extrinsically valued religion. Results here tend not to confirm the homogeneity reported for Wilson's Extrinsic Religious Values Scale, nor has a revised form correlated well enough with the original to be considered equivalent. It is concluded that if the construct is basically valid, then considerable work remains to be done on measurement and concurrent definitional revision.

The Influence Of Slenderness Ratios On Triaxial Shear Testing, Eugene R. Moores, J. M. Hoover Jan 1966

The Influence Of Slenderness Ratios On Triaxial Shear Testing, Eugene R. Moores, J. M. Hoover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Determination of the effect of the slenderness ratio on the results of the triaxial test depends, theoretically, on the boundary conditions induced by (a) shape of the test specimen, (b) manner of the transmission of the external load, and (c) deformations. From a practical point of view enough length should be available to develop two complete cones of failure and the length of the specimen should equal the diameter times the tangent of (45 +ø/2) °. Most workers in the field of triaxial testing of soils accept a slenderness ratio of from 1.5 to 3.0. With slenderness ratios …

Continued Study Of The Growth Of Earth Science Offerings In Iowa Secondary Schools, Siles W. Schirner Jan 1966

Continued Study Of The Growth Of Earth Science Offerings In Iowa Secondary Schools, Siles W. Schirner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Earth science has had a phenomenal growth or rebirth in the public schools of Iowa. There were 7 districts teaching earth science in 1960. Five years later there were 53 districts in which earth science was being taught. This is an increase in five years of 657.l %. In September of 1965 there were 82 districts offering the course. This was a 54.7% increase in one year. Included tables about earth science classes and teachers in Iowa public schools for the two years of 1964-1965 and 1965-1966 makes a comparison of the following: (1) undergraduate majors of teachers, (2) graduate …
