The Effect Of Thiouracil On The Thyroid Gland Of The Mouse, Patricia Patridge Jan 1966

The Effect Of Thiouracil On The Thyroid Gland Of The Mouse, Patricia Patridge

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The object of this research was to determine the effect of thiouracil on the thyroid gland of the mouse. The results showed that thiouracil caused a definite increase in the size of the gland and a decrease in the amount of iodine present in the gland. Since thiouracil is considered capable of preventing iodine from binding and producing the thyroxine molecule needed for the normal function of the gland, these results were as expected.

Solenochilus Springeri (White & St. John, 1868) From The Pennsylvanian Of Southern Iowa, David L. Mikesh, Brian F. Glenister

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The unique Pennsylvanian nautilid Solenochilus springeri is described with reference to material from the lower Cherokee Group (Atokan or Desmoinesian) of Marion County, Iowa, and the Bloyd Formation (Morrowan) of northwestern Arkansas. The species was based originally on a specimen, now lost, from Adair County, Iowa; a neotype is selected from the Marion County collections. The detailed morphology of the pair of dorsolateral spines which characterize mature Solenochilus is described for the first time. These spines, whose length approximates the width of the mature body chamber, are hollow throughout. Each spine originated as a lateral expansion of a prominent dorsolateral …

Correlating Data Which Fit The Gompertz Equation Of Growth, Robert G. Sheppard, James O. Osburn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Gompertz equation describes the decay of biological systems in which the rate of decrease of the concentration of an organism varies directly with its concentration and inversely with the concentration of an inhibitor. The inhibitor concentration falls exponentially with time. Four methods are compared for correlating data on the destruction of Ascites tumor cells which fit the Gompertz equation: analytical, graphical, analog computer, and digital computer.
