Application Of Clay Crystallite-Size In Soil Genesis Studies, R. W. Arnold Jan 1967

Application Of Clay Crystallite-Size In Soil Genesis Studies, R. W. Arnold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many soils have clay-enriched horizons that are thought to result from pedogenic processes. Various hypotheses are proposed for expected clay size-distributions in soil profiles. The average size of clay crystallites determined by the amount of broadening of x-ray diffraction peaks ranged from 160 to >2000Aº , but the lack of trends in four loess-derived soils did not permit the hypotheses to be evaluated. An unexpected relationship in a well expressed illuvial horizon was noted: as the percent of accumulated clay increased to the observed maximum the average crystallite size also increased rather than decreased as proposed. This suggests that small-sized …

An Evaluation Of The Dental Annuli Technique For Determining Age Of White-Tailed Deer In Lowa, Arnold J. Sohn Jan 1967

An Evaluation Of The Dental Annuli Technique For Determining Age Of White-Tailed Deer In Lowa, Arnold J. Sohn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During 1965-66, 47 molars from deer (Odocoileus virginianus) of Iowa and adjoining states were sectioned and examined. An exposure of the cementum pad of the first lower molar of each deer was examined to determine if the gross-sectioning dental annuli method is suitable for determining age of Iowa whitetails. Six bison molars and one elk molar were also examined. Variations in both thickness and clarity of annuli in teeth from Iowa deer made accurate age determination impossible in most cases. Teeth from deer from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan showed more distinct annuli in the root pad of the …

Incidence Of Some Disease Antibodies In Iowa Deer, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1967

Incidence Of Some Disease Antibodies In Iowa Deer, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Serum samples from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Iowa were checked for various disease antibodies from 1959 through 1963. Leptospirosis antibodies were found in 9.5% of 369 sera checked. L. grippotyphosa (3.9%) L. pomona (3.6%) and L. autumnalis (2.8%) were found most frequently. L. ballum, L. hardjo, L. sejroe, and L. autralis were also noted. No evidence of brucellosis was found in 231 sera checked. Evidence for western or California strains of encephalitis was noted. Anaplasmosis was also present. Johne's disease antibodies were not found in a sample of deer from western Iowa.

Successful Renovation Of A Small Natural Iowa Lake, Terry Jennings Jan 1967

Successful Renovation Of A Small Natural Iowa Lake, Terry Jennings

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Center Lake, having a surface area of 264 acres, is located in northwestern Iowa. During 1958 management problems in the form of stunted bullheads and carp along with very poor fishing, indicated the lake should be renovated. During October, 1958 liquid toxaphene was applied at a rate of 0.05 ppm. Apparently, a complete kill resulted. During 1962 an estimate of the bluegill population was made. Nearly 1,100,000 bluegills or about 500 pounds per acre, were present at that time. The 1962 black crappie population was estimated at 250,000 or about 140 pounds per acre. Based on a comprehensive creel census …

Pop-Outs In Hematite Colored Concrete Floor, James H. Elwell, John Lemish Jan 1967

Pop-Outs In Hematite Colored Concrete Floor, James H. Elwell, John Lemish

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pop-outs found in a hematite colored basement floor subjected to wetting and drying action were attributed to shale introduced into the concrete as fine aggregate. The shale particles in pop-outs were characterized by clear gel rims associated with the alkali-silica reaction as well as red-brown hydrated iron oxide gel caused by oxidation of indigenous iron. Fresh shale particles from the same fine aggregate source used in the concrete under investigation were placed in sodium hydroxide which developed reaction zones characteristic of the concrete reaction and were interpreted as evidence supporting the instability of this material in alkaline environment. The hematite …

The manipulations applied to the Explorer 14 data are discussed along with the salient features and advantages of this presentation.

Effect Of Thyroidectomy On The Mechanics Of Skeletal And Intestinal Smooth Muscle, Russell R. Rulon Jan 1967

Effect Of Thyroidectomy On The Mechanics Of Skeletal And Intestinal Smooth Muscle, Russell R. Rulon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Rats made hypothyroid by surgical thyroidectomy were compared with controls relative to the shortening velocity and maximum shortening ability of the intestinal smooth muscle and the gastrocnemius. Hypothyroidism showed some potentiation of maximum shortening, but no effect on the shortening velocity of the gastrocnemius. Intestinal smooth muscle maximum shortening as well as shortening velocity tend to be depressed. There is some evidence for a differential effect of thyroid hormone lack in the two muscle types.

Effects Of Medication On Respiration Pattern Of Tranquilized White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Judith A. Burdick, Kenneth Wilson Jan 1967

Effects Of Medication On Respiration Pattern Of Tranquilized White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Judith A. Burdick, Kenneth Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

White mice of varying ages were given a definite amount of the tranquilizer, reserpine, over a three-week period. At the end of this period, respiration rates were determined by use of a physiograph with impedance pneumograph and small animal attachments. Mice were given, in addition to the tranquilizer, varying dosages of different medicinals, and their respiratory pattern was recorded. Such medicinals as thyroxin, streptomycin, vitamins E and C were given and in combination with sulfanilamide, nicotinamide, neonal, kayquinone, hykenone. Effects of multiple medications were noted and recorded. Reserpine, when given in all combinations, lowered the respiratory rate from that recorded …

A Ph Study Of Four Media Inoculated With Bacteria And Protozoa, Robert F. Mote Jan 1967

A Ph Study Of Four Media Inoculated With Bacteria And Protozoa, Robert F. Mote

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fifteen species of protozoa were used for a 36 day period to test the pH of four protozoa media. During this experiment the pH was determined every three days for control media, the media with bacteria, and the media with bacteria and protozoa. The pH curve included a lag phase, an acceleration phase, a plateau, and a decline with three of the four media during the 36 days. The fourth medium did not have a decline from the plateau during the 36 days. The protozoa and the four media are described.

Some Trends In College Physics And Their Reflections On High School Physics, J. E. Kasper, L. D. Flansburg

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We are much struck with the desirable results that follow from introducing brief discussions of modern physics topics during the course of ordinary, relatively routine first courses in physics for college freshmen and sophomores. We propose in this paper that teachers of secondary physics courses might well also consider the incorporation of such discussions into their courses.
