The Relationship Between Age And Response Speed With Random Letter Stereograms, Joseph Geffen Jan 1968

The Relationship Between Age And Response Speed With Random Letter Stereograms, Joseph Geffen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationships between age and performance for responses to random letter stereograms were examined on three measures: response speed (RS), depth judgment (DJ) and number of errors in locating a figure. These relationships were studied as a function of two stimulus properties: matrix density (MD), defined in terms of percent of letter saturation; and column shift (SC), defined in terms of number of columns of horizontal displacement of the figure. The results supported a prediction of age differences in performance with the RS and the error data: a consistent trend was observed in which the performance of Ss in the …

The Status Of Science Teaching Facilities In Iowa Museums, Dean F. Straffin Jan 1968

The Status Of Science Teaching Facilities In Iowa Museums, Dean F. Straffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Only a very few of Iowa's museums offer valuable resources for science teaching. Of the museums recognized in this survey as having a high degree of value in terms of science education, the scope of their potential use as teaching aids is limited to the "natural sciences" embracing such subjects as geology, astronomy, biology, zoology and the field of anthropology. No Iowa museum reviewed in this survey seems to be of any notable value in the teaching of the "hard" sciences such as chemistry or physics, i.e., there are virtually no permanent or semi-permanent "science and industry" type exhibits in …

Wallace And Carver Science Halls, Clifford L. Meints

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The old science building, in which George Washington Carver studied while at Simpson College, was remodeled in 1967, dedicated the Henry A. Wallace Hall of Science, and now houses the Departments of Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and Psychology as well as providing general lecture and recitation rooms. The newer Carver Science Hall was remodeled in 1968 and houses general classroom space along with the expanded Biology and Chemistry Departments. Specific aspects of the remodeling are described, and some sidelights of the building's history are mentioned. Two other honors concerning George Washington Carver at Simpson College are mentioned.

Studies On Growth And Morphology Of A Trichomonad From The Caecum Of The Pig, Benton W. Buttrey Jan 1968

Studies On Growth And Morphology Of A Trichomonad From The Caecum Of The Pig, Benton W. Buttrey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The growth and morphology of a caecal porcine trichomonad (probably Tritrichomonas rotunda) were studied from both the trichomonad's natural environment, the pig's caecum, and in culture. Growth of the organism was studied in C.P.L.M. medium at 37° C. After an initial inoculum of 100 organisms per ml. the population rose to 2,900,000 per ml. on day 4 and then decreased to near extinction on day 7. In comparison to the organisms on stained smears made directly from the pig's caecum, the organisms after extensive subculturing (100 subcultures over a period of 20 months) were more elongate and often almost tubular; …

The Postembryonic Development Of The Compound Eye And Optic Ganglia In Dragonflies, Jerrold E. Lerum Jan 1968

The Postembryonic Development Of The Compound Eye And Optic Ganglia In Dragonflies, Jerrold E. Lerum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

After a histological examination of the compound eye and optic ganglia of several dragonfly nymphal instars (with particular attention given to the last nymphal instar), several observations relative to the postembryonic development of these structures are noted. The nymphal dragonfly compound eye increases in size from instar to instar by the development of new ommatidia from a permanent primitive portion of eye tissue located on the median edge of the original nymphal eye as well as from individual ommatidial growth. Internally adjacent to this zone of developing ommatidial tissue, a portion of the first optic ganglion is also in a …

Teaching Beginning Concepts In Mathematics, Mildred Dick Pierce Jan 1968

Teaching Beginning Concepts In Mathematics, Mildred Dick Pierce

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate concept development as it relates to the teaching of mathematics in the kindergarten, and to propose a program of activities to be used in developing mathematical concepts with kindergarten children. Basic to determining the strategy to be used in teaching children is a consideration of the background of information the children possess when the teaching begins, and the background of information and the attitudes of the teachers who teach. Since any program which proposes that a different type of learning experience be used implies criticism of the methods now in use, it …

An Analysis Of The Application Of Dynamics To Jewelry Design, Eugene Kent Bahling Jan 1968

An Analysis Of The Application Of Dynamics To Jewelry Design, Eugene Kent Bahling

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis was undertaken to explore possible applications of various forms of dynamics to contemporary jewelry design. The purpose is (1) to isolate design shapes which illustrate five types of dynamics: (2) to present five pieces of jewelry designed and constructed for this study; (3) to describe in detail the techniques and processes used to complete each project: and (4) to analyze the use of dynamics in the design of each project. Dynamics, as used in this study, is defined as design which suggests energy in motion, a vigorous quality. While closely related, dynamics is not to be thought of …

The Analysis And Findings Of A Close And Objective Evaluation Of A Sample Of The Themes Used In The Pilot Phase Of A Recent Study, The Effectiveness Of College-Level Instruction In Freshman Composition, Donald Earl Fish Jan 1968

The Analysis And Findings Of A Close And Objective Evaluation Of A Sample Of The Themes Used In The Pilot Phase Of A Recent Study, The Effectiveness Of College-Level Instruction In Freshman Composition, Donald Earl Fish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The hypothesis that students who do not take freshman composition courses in college are equal in writing performance to students who do take freshman composition after being in college for an equal length of time was tested in the pilot phase of a recent study, The Effectiveness of College-Level Instruction in Freshman Composition. The findings presented in an interim report affirm the hypothesis. Since the theme evaluations for the pilot study were done "holistically," it seemed desirable to determine whether a closer and more objective evaluation of a sample of the student themes used in the pilot study would indicate …

Interaction In Reading Groups: A Possible Cause Of Reading Disability, George H. Hadley Jan 1968

Interaction In Reading Groups: A Possible Cause Of Reading Disability, George H. Hadley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the method of seating children for a directed reading lesson and the acquisition of a concept taught during that lesson. It was felt that children seated closely together for group instruction distracted one another. This negative interaction in the group caused loss of attention and hindered learning. Subjects were matched groups of girls and matched groups of boys from the two third grades at Malcolm Price Laboratory School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The control groups were taught a reading lesson while seated with the teacher in a reading circle. …
